Smaller miner here. How would I go about getting paid out?
Is there a certain threshold to hit?

We get paid once a Block is solved here and it's got 100 confirmations from the Network. There is a dust threshold, depends on both pool and your own hashrate. Payments less than 0.0001 BTC will accumulate in your account until Kanosan finishes the Acounting code which was scheduled to be finished sometime soon. Mine ON!

I was looking at Help -> Payouts on the kano.is site to remember what the dust threshold was but see no mentions of it anywhere. Does it not exist anymore? Did he automate dust payments?

Kano has been working on the Accounting code for a while now. I've not seen an announcement that it's gone live yet, though. On another note, my S15 has arrived at the ice mines and I await it's awakening!!

I am curious: can a pool operator (not of this pool, obviously) divert hash power (overtly) and do whatever he/she pleases without anyone noticing? I found some references that bitcoin.com and antpool did just that.

Well - there are ways to do it - but the miners would most likely notice unless they completely ignore their miners. e.g. I could redirect the pool hash rate to a PPS pool and get paid for your hash rate there - the effect would be worse luck or no blocks depending on how much I redirected. The miner's work would also be going to another pool - and any miner that found a block, you can easily reverse calculate the best share to find the block hash of the block on the 'other' pool - I posted some PHP about how to do that quite a while ago. Of course a miner couldn't do that themselves, a miner can only withhold blocks so that no one gets them. If I withheld the blocks from the PPS pool, your miner would still say it found a block. The big problem with this, however, is that CrapHash came up with the stratum extension called #extranonce that allows a pool/proxy to send any work to mine to any pool and any coin without the miner ever showing that it changed. It's a MAJOR security flaw and isn't in cgminer - but I think at one point Bitmain put it in their miners - though I don't know if it still is or not. Basically the pool can randomly send you a work change for some other pool or coin and then switch you back, without your miner ever reporting this in any way at all. The issue in all this is that if you ever find a block, you can tell in your miner and trace it back to the Bitcoin block from the best share difficulty, or if your miner says it found a block but the best share is very low, then it was probably some altcoin

Well the base hash rate is still around 45-50PH, and the rest is failover.
I don't try and mislead the miners about the pool hash rate, unlike ckpool who has not changed their hash rate down for about 10 days that it's been well under half what it says.

Well that one is currently doing 8PH at the moment for what is worth. But then this means there is 350PH worth of hash rate using your pool only when another one fails? Is there any advantage to them doing that?

Is there any advantage to them doing that? Like any miner, you should always have backup pool settings, and thus when the main pool has problems, updates, changes, whatever, you failover to one of your backup pool settings. In this case of course it's to us here As discussed in discord, there's certainly no problem with them doing it, and their luck proves it's all ok for them to do it, and you can't hop pools to your advantage, so it's all good.

PPS is always higher, usually much higher, fees - anyone with a large hash rate should see that as a bad idea ... and it's been quite a number of hours ... up and down.

They should stay in this pool and use it as primary, secondary and tertiary (plenty of mirrors) imo. I'm using these: stratum+tcp://nya.kano.is:3333 stratum+tcp://stratum.kano.is:3333 stratum+tcp://stratum80.kano.space:80 The bigger their operation, the more useful it is to remain in the PPLNS pool, as blocks (and payments) would come so often the variance would be averaged quickly and they would end earning more in the long run...
