This is odd.  MtGox reported $7+ for a while, but there really wasn't any change in volume.  I think something isn't working right, or almost all the asks were removed and somebody bought anyway, or some combination.

I've see this frequently the past 3 weeks.  The last price on the mtgox website is higher than anything reported on mtgoxlive or bitcoin charts.  It must be a glitch.

Trades on non-USD markets are converted to USD and included in the homepage stats, but Gox charges a currency exchange fee, increasing the price for buys on those markets.

Yaya, last time they did this, we broke 6.8$ and I thought all go, but then they brought the wall back up and I plummeted with my 6.81 base priced coins back in the 6.6-6.7$ range. I wont call it, before we have not broke 7.0$ (and then still be suspicious until we get past this years high of 7.2something $).

I started writing a trading bot a few weeks ago. Gox sends me garbage quite often, buys/asks in the $4.00 - $24.00 range. Maybe that influenced the header. I've always wondered what's going on, but could find nothing on these boards explaining it.

That's not garbage, just quotes far from the mid-price.

And the wall is down because of sustained, heavy buying pressure. Each time this happens, its less likely that it goes back up. More likely, a bid wall goes up and the asks shift higher, gapping the price up.

I thought that if you placed an order it just matched you with the closest available buy/ask? Who's buying bitcoins for $24 a piece and why?

Did the ask walls get bought or were they removed?

Bitcoin Fact: the price of bitcoin will not be greater than $70k for more than 25 consecutive days at any point in the rest of recorded human history.

Market orders are matched and executed, they're broadcasted as trades. Everything else are limit orders, quotes (bids and asks) that go somewhere on each side of the limit order book (LOB). Quotes can be added or removed.

The ones far from the mid-price are wishful thinking and never executed. There's probably a few asks for coins at a million dollars and a few bids for coins at 1 cent. The only time they got executed was last year in the hack, when phantom coins were sold-off in one market order pushing the price to $0.01. There was a guy on the forums claiming he had the bid for a few thousand at $0.01. He never got them of course, since the trade was rolled-back.

Hmm, looks like a significant portion of the asks up to $7 got bought.

They were bought up, compare with historic volume on bitcoincharts.com it matches perfectly.
