It appears that Litecoin's days are all but numbered.  At least bitcoin still has a strong community and development/utility.  I would not touch LTC with a 10 foot pole right now.

Well, I wrote the following almost a year ago. I'd say it holds true more than ever these days:

...there's little reason for litecoin to exist.

Litecoin is the same as bitcoin, without the first-mover advantage, network effects, mindshare, or infrastructure. At best, it *may* offer some sort of vague "insurance" blockchain against bitcoin's (but that's a pretty weak argument, given that, especially as we saw this week, issues in bitcoin are likely to be mirrored in all derivative alts). I'd say best case, ltc value caps at 1/40th bitcoin's (1/4 from the supply size, and then minus an order of magnitude for all the above reasons).

Note I said best case. Most likely, I think, far less. Litecoin in the past could be held up as "interesting" by people who didn't think particularly well/deeply about the space, while there weren't many other alts out there. Now that there are, it's clear that even things like Dogecoin have the potential to unseat LTC as the alt princess of the day. At least Doge is a fascinating exercise in internet viral marketing.

Ultimately I think we'll see next-gen alts that truly offer unique capabilities steal first-gen alt's thunder.

Each new, even slightly successful, alt likely takes market-share from the existing derivative alts more than anything else, and for the time being, with litecoin as the highest capitalized alt, it has the most to lose.

LTC confirms faster and has a relatively strong infrastructure behind it, too.

It is also better for small payments because a dollar value of 2 results in less fractional payments. 1 Coffee costs around 1 LTC but 0.0066 BTC  Grin

No doubt it's btc here as it is virtually the first crypto which everyone knows about and it becomes the standard benchmark when comparing among cryptocurrencies. Also look and compare on the size of community. It's the number of support from the community that makes it strong.

Litecoin has no innovation related to BTC. And no market acceptance;

Bitcoin has some chance of bigger recovery, but I doubt LItecoin will ever recover

Litecoin is notable because it was the first alt-coin.

But because there's so many alts now, there are
other coins that are more uniquely different
than Litecoin, so litecoin is fading in importance.

^ False.

Namecoin was the first altcoin of any note (IIRC, there were a few sort-of-altcoins before Namecoin, but Namecoin is effectively the first alt).

I think litecoin was the first non-PoW that was created. Both were forks of Bitcoin, but litecoin had a lesser chance of success because of it's inability to be merged mined with bitcoin.

I personally would not consider any other altcoin to be even remotely safe to use and would never consider doing as much

Litecoin is PoW; specifically scrypt instead of bitcoin's sha256.

While Namecoin had an explicit purpose that was different than Bitcoin's, Litecoin was more of a technical and market exercise to see what would happen if you tweaked a few parameters and launched a new chain. Obviously (or at least, it should be obvious), the parameter tweaks (supply, conf-time, mining alg) don't matter in the longrun. I think that's becoming more and more obvious, finally, even to the fairly thick-headed among us.

For something with good core fundamentals, absolutely.

For something with no reason to exist, that was pumped up mainly due to ignorant exuberance....not so much.
