You just need to sign a message (which includes your username / date) with a BTC address, you can do it with Electrum or any other software, someone here will verify it for you. There are several threads on the forum that explain how to do if you don't know yet.

On desktop Electrum, he can click on tools -> sign/verify message. Then he can input the message and the address he wants to use and click on verify.

If you are looking for a good bitcoin wallet, Trustwallet is not among. Coinomi can sign bitcoin message. I knew this since 2020 that I used the wallet until I came to this forum to know the difference between open source and close source wallets.

Obvious because both address are generated from the same public key.



This usually don't happen in the other way, because the Electrum standard use another encode byte that is not compatible for the Legacy Signature Chekers

Although it is actually because both addresses are generated from the same private key which is required for the signature. The private key generates the public key which still makes you correct, but it is private key that is important about it.

Yes exactly, and that is my whole point, why the signatures for segwit isn't an standard yet, regardless its trivial to extended the current standard to check them, a lot of wallets support it, just the "standard" title is missing.

Because segwit is just a segway to taproot, and will be obsolete soon.  Plus, no matter how much you like signing messages with bitcoin addresses, that's not their primary purpose.  Bitcoin as a message signing tool lacks significant features, and isn't as practical as GPG.  Bitcoin development is focused (as it should be) on reducing block size and transaction fees, not trying to recreate GPG.

You mean segwit version 0 will be obsolete soon? But it is still the most used address and also recommended by some wallets for lowest fee. Even if not recommended, it remain the default. Also what albert0bsd meant is that the message signing is not exactly signing message with bitcoin address but with bitcoin private key which can generate all types of the addresses.

You mean increasing block size and reducing transaction fee. For lower transaction fee, segwit version 0 (segwit) is comparable with segwit version 1 (pay-to-taproot). P2TR has lowest consolidation fee and also if the inputs are getting more. But segwit version 0 has the lowest fee if the outputs are more or if the inputs and outputs are the same. The output virtual size for version 0 is lower while the input virtual size for taproot is lower.

The reason we thought taproot was created which will significantly reduce transaction fee is in multisig, by requiring just a single signature for transactions, just like in singlesig wallets, and also having just one public key required in fee as both signature and public key will combine into one for making transaction despite that there are more keys and signature required for the transaction. But as of today, I was unable to see any wallet have that feature. The known multisigs are still legacy what its addresses start from 3 and segwit P2WSH that its addresses start from bc1.

Yes, you can do it and its the recommended one for this purpose. As long you saved the back up of this wallet too for future use, say your account is hacked and need to sign the wallet address again for verification that you own the address.
