1101  Economy / Speculation / Re: What will be Bitcoin price this christmas? on: July 27, 2014, 10:03:14 AM
$3000
so you expect better performance. Cool

It's the summer now and not many people bother with bitcoin. I expect things to get better from September and on, since we seem to hold $600 under these conditions.

It's hot as hell where I'm at but I'm pretty sure somebody in Australia would call it the middle of winter right now  Wink

I see the price hitting somewhere in the mid 800 to mid 900 range and not swinging much.
1102  Other / Off-topic / Re: Where I'd Want to Be During an Earthquake on: July 27, 2014, 09:55:25 AM
In air?

That's a pretty bad place to be actually if your plane is about to land or has to divert farther away.  If you're flying over the area at 36K feet yeah it fine.  Landing on a cracked runway = death  Shocked
1103  Other / Politics & Society / Re: No satellite recording from missile launch flash. on: July 27, 2014, 09:46:01 AM
This missile is not like an Atlas being launched from the western seaboard of the US where 1/2 the West Coast of the US can see the missile, this is a smaller missile and the residual trail disperses fairly quickly.  Looking at the crash the skies above look partly cloudy with some atmospheric haze.  But yes no video has shown a trail.
If it only had to travel a few miles to hit it's target, that would decrease the chances of the missile being caught on camera (via satellite). I don't see a conspiracy here.

Satellites' capabilities to detect missiles don't depend upon how slow or how far a missile would fly. They detect missile launches right at the start through infrared sensors.

Infrared is virtually useless even on GEO when there is significant cloudcover or atmospherics that would disperse the signal.  The satellite typically switch to ground radar guided tracking when this happens and usually can track a projectile when it is 3-4 miles up - or at least that was the case 5 years ago - I don't know if they have newer technology now.
Well, there's this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space-Based_Infrared_System
But I don't know if it can detect missiles this small

SBIRS won't track small missiles like the BUK - it's made for tracking the silo based and heavy mobile platform based ICBMs.

Don't know if this is a fake but here's a video captured in infrared by a meteorological satellite which allegedly shows the Ukrainian air defense launching a BUK missile at the Malaysian airliner in Eastern Ukraine (source is unknown):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlK83q86cD8

I would have to look at the crash videos a lot more but I remember seeing a lot more cloud cover on that day.  I can't what the zoom scale is or make out any landmarks.  That's a job for those conspiracy peeps  Wink

My point was that satellite infrared sensors can capture smaller missile launches given suitable atmospheric conditions, if of course this video was not an ICBM launch. Wink

Oh I know they can record it.  What I was discussing is the automated relay certain satellites can do to NORAD.  My dad initially worked on FAADC2I (later FAADC3I) and then went on into satellite work with NG - while this is nowhere near my line of work as a physician I did read up on it quite a bit.

Thermal IR imaginery has a granularity of about 1/3 that of optics currently, so whatever can be defined by an optical eye has to be 3x larger for an IR eye to see.  a BUK can easily be seen, but having the system automatically note it a missile launch detect is something else.
1104  Other / Politics & Society / Re: White House: Republicans May Push to Impeach Obama If They Get the Chance on: July 27, 2014, 08:32:31 AM
So basically it's only when the IRS and law enforcement targets conservatives that you actually do anything about it? Don't you realise how pathetic and petty that makes you look? I'm white and I find it outrageous that law enforcement have been specifically targeting ethnic groups in your country as well as mine.

Bush should have been impeached before Obama and you should never have let Obama get elected in the first place or Mitt Romney.

Do you have a reading comprehension problem?  Who said anything about targeting conservatives.  I said targeting Americans.  Conservatives are Americans.  Liberals are Americans.  Pagans are Americans.  Vegans are Americans.  I don't give a rats ass what group they are unless they're waging war against the country.  The IRS targeted predefined groups.  If the Republicans or Tea Party got into the White House and put their own AG into office the same crap is going to happen - it's a complete violation of the public trust.  They are no longer OUR SERVANTS - they would be serving their own interests!

Do you realize how partisan hack you look?

I'm darker skinned than Obama and while I do have some issues with cops I generally realize they come home to their wife and kids every night and sleep in the same neighborhoods that I do.  I can't say the same for Congress, Senate or Obama.

BTW you do know most police force unions in America donate to democratic parties for increased union strength don't you?

Bush could have been impeached if we can find a credible source showing he knew Iraq had no WMDs (including chemical) but stated otherwise.  It doesn't help that Powell pushed for the agenda and Powell is an Obama cheerleader now.

What Bush could be impeached for was trampling Constitutional rights with the Patriot act, but that's not going to happen since Obama pushed those even further.

But we don't have a time machine, we can only work with what we have now.  If you want to hall Bush off to Nuremburg by all means go ahead.

1106  Other / Politics & Society / Re: So this is what a "for the children" gun grabber looks like in California :) on: July 27, 2014, 08:17:42 AM
Unless sent to jail, they never quit or resign. Amazing...

Who says they quit in jail?  They're always campaigning.  Just because they can't run for office anymore doesn't mean they're not pulling strings.  Look at how the Calderon family has stayed in power despite crime after crime in that crooked family.  His brother and son and still "working hard" for the CA taxpayer  Cheesy

I'm sure Yee will get some padded cell with all the amenities he's used to.  If a drug dealer can do trades while in prison imagine what Yee can do. And then there's the book deal.

I'm sure when he's out SEIU will have a nice job for him.
1107  Other / Politics & Society / Re: White House: Republicans May Push to Impeach Obama If They Get the Chance on: July 27, 2014, 07:47:02 AM
I think they learned from the Clinton debacle that unless the abuse is really just outrageous that trying to do this is foolhardy.  All it will do is give the media a chance to rally around Obama and energize his base for elections.

Forget gun running, forget Benghazi (because ONLY 4 Americans/Ambassador died), forget Solyndra, forget Begdahl.  The outrageous abuse was the targeting of Americans by the IRS.  This is an attack on Americans by it's own government.  The fact that more Democrats (and even apathetic Republicans) don't cry out about this is disturbing.

Apathy has set in.  If that's the case nothing that goes on at the top is anything more than political theater.  For all we know it can all be a puppet show run by 1 wizard.
1108  Other / Politics & Society / Re: So.. Chase shutdown my College Checking account on: July 27, 2014, 07:35:47 AM
Just register a company and get a bank account under that company name.

When you do this they still tie the CEO/President's SSN to the company as that person is ultimately liable to the company's debts.  I know people think incorporating protects their assets from the company's losses but it really doesn't for most small businesses.  If his SSN is flagged then he won't be able open an account for 7 years if it's in the Chex system.  I'm not sure how long the security alerts stay in effect.
1109  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Everyone of my friends says the same: "How do I get Bitcoins?" on: July 27, 2014, 07:28:55 AM
Here is my suggestion for anyone that wants free bitcoins:

Go out to a street corner and beg for money. Then use the money you receive to buy bitcoins.

That's how you get bitcoins for free. I guarantee that you will get more bitcoins that way than you will get from begging online or by visiting faucets.

Do you pay beggars in Sunnyvale? I doubt it...

The point is that you will be lucky if you make 10 cents a day from faucets. You'll make more than that begging on the streets, even in Sunnyvale.

True. I've heard of beggars getting more than the average daily wage. All you have to do is find the perfect spot. A busy city, a busy street  Tongue

Those are more likely scammers than beggars.  They pretend to be sick/ill/disabled and suck money out of people at freeway off-ramps.  Then after a good day of pulling $400 out of the generosity of others they hop in their Audi A6 and drive home to their home in Newport Beach Tongue

Unless you're willing to lie you would probably be better off working some off jobs. I guess it depends on how much your integrity is worth.
1110  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Please tell me if my computer will be ok for mining or not on: July 27, 2014, 07:23:48 AM
The CPU doesn't have the instruction set capable of mining any decent CPU coin.  It also can't run a 64 OS so no mining of modern altcoins.

The GPU doesn't support OpenCL so it's useless too.

The only thing it might be good for is hosting an ASIC - he would have to buy an ASIC and mine with that (see the link for CrazyGuy's sale).
1111  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Coins stolen from my wallet?!? on: July 27, 2014, 07:19:40 AM
You can move the wallet to linux

Install bitcoin-qt in linux ( ubuntu ) and move the existing wallet.dat to that

This makes the wallet more secure than windows

If he used it on Windows before, it would be pretty much useless. Your wallet.dat might be exposed to all kinds of malware on Windows. Therefore, if you move it to Linux, the attacker would have your key and can steal your BTC.

Do you realize how difficult you are making this?  How many Windows based people would know how to find an Ubuntu install and burn a copy.  Of those, how many would be able to get the OS installed and run bitcoin-qt in under 1 day?  Telling Windows based people to move to Linux is not helpful.  People who are familiar with Linux can do this, people who are young and have time can do this.  With the exception of miners, I would say Windows based bitcoin-qt easily accounts for 85% of all the offline wallets.

All this talk of malware is quite useless.  If you still have the coins in your wallet, use this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=37.0 and pick a wallet on an OS that you're comfortable using.  Switching to a new OS while trying to secure your wallet = lost coins.  Once you have a secured wallet, simply move your coins from the unsecured wallet to the secured wallet - problem solved.

I know for a fact the average american wouldnt know what the fuck ubuntu is and explain why would they change their current OS lol.

Exactly.  It would be wise for the Windows users to learn Linux if they plan on getting involved with mining or have an intense need to minimize their risks, but playing with a OS they're not familiar with is asking for disaster.  BAMT is pretty much mindless plug and play mining and still 95% of computer users wouldn't be able to mine in 1 day with it.

There are plenty of viable and secure Windows options as I linked - people should use them.  Linux users usually know where their vulnerabilities are.
1112  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How easy was it to buy Bitcoin back in 2011? on: July 27, 2014, 07:12:35 AM
It was somewhat easier to buy when Mt Gox didn't have any ID requirements but that's also when SHTF.  Bitcoin went from $33 to $2.  Imagine if $33 was like the $1200 last year, the $2 (Jan 2012) would be $72 now.  If BTC started tanking from $500 to $72 over a 5 month period would you have the guts to buy in at $72?

Everything is easier in hindsight.  I didn't sell on the way down to $2, but I did sell on the way back up to $7 lol. Damn that wife.
1113  Other / Meta / Re: Posts versus Activity on: July 27, 2014, 07:06:41 AM
Simple way to think about it - for every 14 day period you were active with at least 1 post, you can get up to 14 more activity assuming you have that many posts under you belt.  If you were active with posts for 10 periods (2 weeks x 10) but only made 15 posts your activity would be 15 until you posted more (up until your cap of 10x14  or 140 activity).

BFL took preorder money for Monarch from last August onwards.  They were supposed to start shipping the initial Monarchs in November 2013.  It's the end of July 2014 and they don't have a prototype that meets 90% of spec (currently it's getting about 360GH/s with lots of errors rather than 600GH/s).

Just a reminder for any new users to avoid that company at all costs (and I was a former customer regretfully).
I remember seeing BFL advertising the monarch late last year when I first got interested in bitcoin and though that it would likely be a bad dead at then current difficulty levels.

When the Monarch was supposed to be delivered (Dec of last year) the difficulty was just under 1 Billion (0.91 Billion).  Currently the difficulty is over 20x that at over 18 Billion. So 600GH/s back then would need to be 12TH/s now to make the same amount of BTC per day.  They're having trouble making 0.4TH/s reliably on their Monarchs right now.

Here's a post about them swapping the Buttcoin (a mockery of bad Bitcoin players) website:

1116  Other / Off-topic / Re: Go see Lucy on: July 27, 2014, 06:46:44 AM

Milla Jovovich as Leeloo vs. Scarlett Johansson as Lucy.

Milla hands down.  Scarlett is average for an actor and just happens to have fat in the right places.

Dank, please refrain from frying whatever brain matter you have left please.
1117  Other / Off-topic / Re: How many posts you have reported and what is your accuracy? on: July 27, 2014, 06:43:00 AM
28 with 97% accuracy.  I don't report often, but when I do I prefer to report scammers and spammers.  Stay thirsty my friends Tongue

Seriously though if you see some newbie posting links to a wondeful new site or spamming referrals just report it to the mods and cut down on trash posts.
1118  Other / Off-topic / Re: Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. WTF? on: July 27, 2014, 06:37:19 AM
Given that a jet like a 747-400 can weigh over 600 TONS we fully loaded you're not going to have any kind of parachute deploy to stop that thing from falling.  Barring the plane losing a wing like MH17 the glide a plane has would still provide more lift than any parachute.
1119  Other / Off-topic / Re: Funniest black comedian on: July 27, 2014, 06:29:35 AM
Damon/Keenan Wayans should be on that list.  The list is very chrono biased for newer comedians (leaving Richard Pryor off?).  Most people on here probably never watched In Living Color which launched Jim Carey, J Lo and Jamie Foxx.

I guess Sammy Davis Jr should be on there too but almost none of us remember his stuff.

For me it would be Damon Wayans - Home D Clown, Men on Film/Books, Anton Merryweather and other characters always give me a laugh.  And his show My wife and Kids was suitable for families.

Removing heat = cooling.

Every air cooled datacenter needs X amount of CFM to keep Y KW worth of hardware at Z degrees.

No.

Removing heat = Removing hot air from the building
Cooling = Cooling the same air and circulating it back

Can't make it simpler, sorry.

The issue is complicated by the fact that the incoming air is the same temp as the ambient, and the internal air is being dumped outside.  The real question should be what is the heat capacity of those 15000CF that is being removed. That depends on air pressure (elevation) and water vapor.  It's a little complicated unless you do that stuff for a living.

If the 15000CFM is able to bring in enough "cool" air from outside and the hot air can rise to the top of the warehouse it doesn't really matter.
