1241  Bitcoin / Mining support / Mining Hardware Mistery [127.5 C / 0 RPM] on: February 08, 2012, 10:55:55 PM
alright this is a mining hardware mystery for someone to prove they are smarter than I am. ( like thats hard right? Tongue )

I like to consider I have mastered the art of the 5 x 5870 windows mining rig, in fact I have 5 of them.

but this one rig , this one little snot nosed, evil, cablepair mocking rig has a very strange problem

on all my 5870 rigs I clock the cards at 950 core, this gets me about 430 mhash per card

the rig in question will only allow me to clock 4 of the cards at 950 and the 5th one has to be clocked at 800
but it doesnt have to be the fifth one, it could be anyone, infact 4 x 950 and 1 x 850 core is the limit, I can clock them all lower and the system will run fine..

Someone is going to say "You dont have enough power!" Thats what I thought at first as well, at first I had a Rosewill 1000watt 80 plus , which should be enough power, I thought maybe there was something wrong with the PSU and it was not putting out enough power, at that
time if I clocked the cards too high as described above it would just shut off

so I switched the PSU to a corsair HX1000 80 plus a PSU i knew for a fact could power 5 x 5870 because it is on my other rigs,
sure enough I run into problem clocking it higher than describe above except this time its really strange, instead of just shutting off it will mine for a min and then all of the sudden one of the GPUs will display 127.5 C and 0 RPM in cgminer how weird is that ? Every single time it shows 127.5 C and 0 RPM in cgminer exactly 127.5 degrees c, also it is not the GPU it self, I have swapped out all the GPUs with others that I know work, I have moved them around, I even changed out the motherboard with another one, as well as formatted reinstalled windows so I know its not a software issue.

to recap here's a break down

5 x 5870s
you cant clock them higher than 4 x 950 core + 1 x 800 core
if you do the system crashes after mining for a min

with Rosewill PSU it just shuts off
with Corsair PSU it shows exactly 127.5 c 0 RPM on one gpu then freezes

to try and find the problem I have

Swapped PSUS (with PSUS that are known to be working and have enough power)
swapped Motherboard
Swapped GPUS
Formatted / Reinstalled  - Ruled out Software Problem
Even tried not using a particular PCI-E slot that the problem occured on before , it just moves to a different GPU on a diff PCI-E

Whats Left?
Could the CPU be doing this?

I mean really whats left to rule out

CPU, Ram, PCI-E Extender Cables, those are the only variables left. and none of them make any sense to me,

Has anyone ever heard of this problem? Have any clues as to what could be causing it? I have been racking my brain trying to figure it out and I cant for the life of me.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!!!!  Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

all my rigs have 5 x 5870 in them, I have never been able to get a system to have more than 5 cards stable in windows, im sure someone has done it but I just could not get it to have any stability

edit

no change at all Sad

i know this sounds very strange but watching this thing it almost looks like its trying to maintain a mhash less than 500 total or something

the gpus mhash fluctuations constantly going from 20-100+ and back down each one keeps changing but the aggregate speed stays around 500 mhash for all 5 cards...

thank you for that but now im having an even weirder problem

it went from 1 GPU at full speed to 5 GPUS at very low speed

like all five are adding up to only 420 mhash,

is there a fix for this too? Smiley

hello gentlemen

i have been mining with cgminer in windows since the beginning but I decided recently that I would try linux on one of my rigs
I am pretty sure I set everything up correctly

but cgminer will only show 1 GPU, even though aticonfig shows all 5

I get that more ADL devices than OpenCL devices error

I will gladly send 1 btc tip to whoever gives me the fix first! thanks!! Smiley

1249  Economy / Goods / Re: Ebay Feedback for sales on: February 07, 2012, 02:06:48 PM
I have done thousands of dollars of transactions on this forum and to me personally Ebay feedback means absolutely nothing.

For one thing, this is NOT ebay. You may have a power seller rating on ebay, but how does that prove you wont rip me off on Bitcointalk.org? If we conduct a transaction on ebay I can post negative feedback and also I am guaranteed by ebay and paypal that they will reimburse me in many cases if you do rip me off, also you have an incentive not to rip me off because an ebay account in good standing is worth more than what you might gain for ripping me off.

Same goes on Bitcointalk.org, if you have a hero status account that you have been building for a year and a good reputation, it is not likely that you will throw it all away just to rip someone off a couple hundred bucks or whatever.

Try to go to ebay and tell them you want a power seller account based on the fact that you have hero status on Bitcointalk.org, they will laugh at you and for good reason, THIS IS NOT EBAY.

OP: This is not a personal attack on you this is just something I wanted to voice my opinion on because I have had numerous people who have asked me to trust them based on some ebay feedback that may or not be theirs, every time I check them out on bitcointalk sure enough they are  newly whitelisted or JR members and have only had an account for a couple of weeks and they think ebay feedback will buy them some sort of trust and personally I think its preposterous and anyone who conducts business on here please do not trust someone solely on some ebay feedback because it means absolutely nothing when conducting transactions on this forum, if they insist you should trust them based on ebay feedback then you insist that the transaction be conducted on ebay so you can get protection for your transaction.

I just want to say in regards to 5870

I consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to mining with theses cards as I have been doing so for almost a year now and have about 20 of them, they are excellent mining cards very efficient and stable , I have a 5870 that's been mining 11 months straight without any Problems no joke

In any case in regards to drivers and speed I have tested them all fairly extensively and ccc 11.9 with the Sdk 2.5.xx it comes with gives 430-445 mhash depending on the card with 950/180 clocks and the latest cgminer with stock kernel and 9 intensity

If any can prove me wrong (or right) I would love to see it, and would gladly give donation to anyone that provides a detailed benchmark

I'm running 5870s in my mining machine and gave your 180 memory clock setting a try. I found the difference between 300 and 180 to be about a 5mh loss per card @ 180, and negligible difference in power consumption as measured by kill a watt. It could be that you're running some other settings in cgminer that I'm not? I have worksize set to 256, otherwise all defaults. Engine clocks are 950. This is v2.2.1 on a xubuntu 11.04 machine.

what SDK are you using and what speeds are you getting with 950/300 ? Also I am using default worksize and vectors, I have tested and never seen any increase only decrease and stay the same by changing what is default for worksize and vectors with cgminer

let me show you a snap shot from my anubis console of one of the 4 rigs I have with 5870s each.

this rig has 3 x 2 gb models and 2 x 1 gb model thats why your seeing some variance in the fan speeds and voltages
yes the amount of electricity and heat difference between 300/180 may be negligible however IMO when your running 20 gpus every bit counts, even if you save 1 kwhr a day it adds up over time and I see no speed increase what so ever by changing mem clocks from 180 to 300

Managed to get my 447 Mhash/s with my 5870s !

Will post updated stats and details soon. Testing for stability for now.

Hopefully some can appreciate my work and give me some love over at

Thanks !

as I said earlier I would gladly give a donation for detailed benchmarking information, specifically what SDKs and which addon flags like vectors and work size, if all you did was push the core clock way up to 990 or something that is not going to be stable for long.

waiting to see what you got...

WTF ?

I know the solution. Go Install Linux. Tongue

A little tip. Avoid giving usesless suggestions.
Another tip for the packager: give a list of PHP modules needed for proper functioning of the application.

usesless is not a word.

p.s. Linux is much better suited to run apache web server and php then Windows server 2003, and if you cant see that then your just as usesless as windows

I have a few family members that are willing to let me run cpuminer on their computer as long as they don't have to look at it and i'm afraid if i let it run as is they might accidentally close it, is there any way to run it in the background?

you need stealth runner

it not only runs hidden in the back ground but it also disables the mining when the computer is being used, as soon as the person stops using the computer it starts mining again

1259  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER GPU bitforce overclock monitor fanspeed RPC in C linux/windows/osx 2.2.1 on: February 01, 2012, 01:29:28 PM
Maybe this a stupid question, I don't know.. I tried searching quite a bit but didn't find anything regarding special settings. I just began mining again after a long break and I made the switch from guiminer to cgminer. My computer has 2x 5850's. With guiminer and the tags -v -w256, I get about 340mh/s per card with 875/300. With cgminer, I get 305-310mh/s. I'm running Catalyst 12.1 drivers. I've played with the intensity and checked the clock speed with Afterburner, and the cards are running at about 60*C each. Is there something I should be doing differently?

you need to remove 12.1 and install 11.9

its kind of a pain to do it in windows

you have to uninstall ALL AMD softwae
then physically delete the directories
then reboot into safe mode
use something like driver sweeper to remove the AMD/ATI drivers and all traces from the registry
than reboot into normal windows and reinstall 11.9

that will get your speed back

I have also tried using the vectors and work size work around for 5xxxx cards but you dont get all your speed back, and sometimes you have to keep your memory clocks high which makes the cards run hotter and use more electricity. IMO your better off just using 11.9 with the 2.5.xx sdk that comes with it

hope I was able to help
