1061  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoinica lost 43,554 BTC from Linode compromise, suspicious TXIDs publicized on: March 02, 2012, 04:34:35 AM
i mean seriously, could not this whole thing been prevented if the wallet was just encrypted?

Obviously the software running against the hot wallet has to have access to it. This means that if someone roots the server, they'll be able to have the same access to the hot wallet. Encryption would not have entered into it.

Zhou, good on you for covering this! I'm having a hard enough time covering the BTCinch theft; I can only imagine how pissed you are at linode.

In this case, encryption would have protected the wallet because the attacker was only able to get root access after a reboot.

thank you.

1063  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoinica lost 43,554 BTC from Linode compromise, suspicious TXIDs publicized on: March 02, 2012, 04:27:59 AM
so basically the problem here is no one was using encrypted wallets because the web apps they were connected to were not compatible

damn what a shame thats a lot of money Sad props to the OP for doing the right thing.

You’re a class act for standing behind your business and accepting the burden of loss yourself.

Your losses can be decreased substantially if you wait to reimburse your clients until after the associated market drop that will follow this event.

+1

but I have to ask, is there something I am missing here, why was this wallet with over $200k worth of bitcoins not encrypted with a strong password?

1067  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Selling $65 Green Dot Money Pak for 13.5 bitcoins.. on: March 02, 2012, 01:35:01 AM
yes and like I said this moneypak went to very good use!

I was at the DMV today and it occurred to me that I could get a BITCOIN vanity plate. I live in NY and assumed that the plate was already taken, but to my surprise it was available! (how cool is that)

So I bought this moneypak with Bitcoins and in turn bought the BITCOIN vanity plate, so in effect I purchased a BITCOIN vanity plate with Bitcoins!

1074  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitcoins no longer accepted @ BFL / ordering BFL single with dwolla on: March 02, 2012, 12:20:10 AM
How many people actually have these Singles? I am starting to get very suspicious nervous about the actions of BFL lately.

I am not accusing them of some kind of scam but it certainly occurs to me that something is very wrong there, something other than they are just so damn busy shipping out singles that they cant find the time to answer emails.

one thing for sure there is something going on there that we do not know about - some missing piece of this puzzle.

Is it possible their projected cost was totally wrong? That they pre-sold 100s of these things at $600 only to find out it costs twice that just to make them? if they are doing so much business why are they so under staffed? why is it no other fpga vendor can duplicate anywhere near as much speed for the same cost? Why is it that BFL has such little involvement on this forum when clearly the vast majority of their customers congregate here? Why did they stop taking Bitcoins as payment and why even if you order with Paypal and pay instantly do they not email you to confirm the order (this has been confirmed - over a week now no conf email)

I really do not want there to be any problems, and I am not trying to cause any problems or make any accusations but there are a lot of unanswered questions here and I find it very strange that they are not answering any questions or attempting to do any business now all of of the sudden.

I really think that BFL as a business that stands to make a small fortune off of this community they owe us some answers.

I placed my order for two BFL singles 7 days ago today and can not get any answers.

Does anybody else starting to feel like they are not telling us something?

OK, I pretty sure this is ancient history, but here goes anyway.

I've been using Windoze XP with Catalyst 11.6 with a 5830 and 5770 and had low CPU utilization with that combination.  I went back to my Win7 install where I was using 10.9 to get low CPU utilization prior to CGMiner 2.0.  I updated this Win7 to Catalyst 11.6 and now have 100% CPU utilization.  I had thought Catalyst 11.6 had low CPU utilization across all platforms?

Any thoughts?  Or is this just the way it works with Windoze 7?

IIRC was a lot later than 11.6 before 100% bug was solved in Windows.  Why not use 11.11?

Why not use 12.1? As long as you don't install the SDK runtime that comes with it, it's working 100% with my 5850's.

What SDK are you using with it?

I guess I'll have to give that a try.  I'm still perplexed why the 11.6, the last know good version, doesn't work on Win7, or is just my Win7 installation?
Thanks,
Sam

sam: install 11.9 if your using win7 with 5xxx series cards - it does not get better than that and believe me I have done the testing
