The future of payment for legal services - The Bitcoin?

Steve Lombardi
2012-01-19

http://www.theiowaedict.com/business---competition/the-future-of-payment-for-legal-services---the-bitcoin/

Would you accept payment for legal services in bitcoin? Should you? What is a bitcoin?
...

Let's say a client offers payment for legal services in bitcoin. You accept his payment and make the transaction by transferring his bitcoin to your digital wallet. You then use it to buy something you need to run your practice that is sold on the Internet. But how do you account for the transaction for income tax purposes? That's the part I don't understand and so lawyers will be pretty hesitant to venture into using bitcoin.

I know there must be a few bitcoiners who use di.fm
Surprisingly - it seems the di.fm admins say they haven't had any requests for it before
(I don't believe this - as I submitted a request a while back using their contact form)

Check out this thread: http://forums.di.fm/general-help-and-support/bitcoin-for-payment-of-premium-service-251775/

Please don't sign up for that forum and post there if you're not already a forum member (like I did!)  - because that just looks like a dodgy campaign,  but if you're already a di.fm forum user - please consider mentioning your support for the idea of accepting bitcoin on that thread.

Running at a Loss.
It's been exactly six months since I opened the Bitcoin casino. When I started this thing, credibility was a real worry for me. I mean, I had none, and we opened it from Costa Rica, which doesn't really help. I committed to keeping a radical level of transparency, publishing all the card shoes and daily RTPs. But I thought I'd go a step further and share with you the actual balance sheet for what's happened so far.

So.. .$60 per document??  .. and because of that silly “Notarization for the purpose of verifying on MtGox.com”
Each such apostille can presumably only be used for this one purpose.. Ouch.

1427  Economy / Speculation / Re: The timeline on: January 18, 2012, 09:09:41 AM
Bruce Wagner said on his pre 'Good Wife' show (when his guests were trying to be cautious about speculative behaviour) that people should not wait to buy bitcoin, they should jump in and buy it before the Mr Bitcoin episode because...
bitcoin prices will *EXPLODE*.   (it did explode - just not the way he meant!)

Not that I really think what he says is that important - but it'd be nice to think this anti-rally is partly punishment for him being an over-the-top bimbo-bull.

'The Good Wife' recap: Alicia versus the Internet

Meredith Blake
2011-01-16

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2012/01/the-good-wife-recap-alicia-versus-the-internet.html

Apparently, Bitcoin is actually a real thing, invented by someone with the possibly pseudonymous name of Satoshi Nakamoto. I was totally ignorant of this phenomenon until I googled it after the show, and the discovery makes me sympathize with Alicia when she tells Zach, “This stuff makes me feel so dated.”

Executive producers Robert and Michelle King must have anticipated this response from their audience, because the episode does, in fact, play rather like “Bitcoin for Dummies.” One of the things I like about “The Good Wife” is how it educates viewers about specific legal or political issues, but even still this episode veers too far into didacticism for my taste.

An interesting observation from this reviewer..

--I wonder why the writers didn’t bother to come up with a fake name for “Bitcoin,” the way they’ve done with “FaceBranch”and “FactSwim” in the past.
Presumably this is because there is no 'bitcoin' corporation to sue the producers Smiley

1432  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I talked with Amazon Live Support today... on: January 16, 2012, 02:29:40 PM
I'm very skeptical as well. Amazon accepting Bitcoin would be huge, so huge it would steamroll the whole Bitcoin economy. Amazon must know that, if they know about Bitcoin. It's too soon.

It's not too soon for bitcoin, but Amazon may or may not be cautiously considering such a move.  Bitcoin is ready for such events, but the inclusion by Amazon or any other major player is going to introduce some major price movements again; because it won't just be one.  If Amazon does it, there are many others who will do it also in short order.

And then we'll all be millionaire equivalents.

I sometimes wish Satoshi had set the limit to something like 21K instead of 21M -  that way 'bitcoinaire' might one day have simultaneously referred to someone holding an entire bitcoin or more and as being of great wealth.
I'm not *quite* bullish enough to hope that this century, under a 21M limit,  'bitcoinaire' could be a 'millionaire equivalent' in todays dollars Wink

..and (apparently thanks to gmaxwell), the message 'embedded' in the blockchain as shown in the show - is really there!

use something like: 'strings -n 20 blk0001.dat' to see it.

Also this:
"FFS Luke-Jr leave the blockchain alone!"

Well yeah..  the Len Sassaman tribute and the Good Wife addition are awesome..
pity about Luke-Jr's superstitious vomit in the middle, but in a way even that is a testament(no pun intended) to the freedom granted by decentralization.

1435  Economy / Speculation / Re: RALLY! on: January 16, 2012, 08:16:35 AM
I'm cautiously optimistic.. just shy of short term bullish.

Judging by some of the Good Wife episode reviews and comments outside of this forum - It seems to me that the 'bitcoin' aspect of the story is going to be to many, just some quirky sideline. Most fans of the show will be far more interested in the ongoing story arcs.

I still thought it was great publicity for bitcoin - just to get the word out there and in the back of people's minds.

(not sure if it got any higher - it says the peak was 5hrs ago)

‘Good Wife’ Watch: Jason Biggs, Jim Cramer and Bitcoin Get in on the Action

Mike Hale
2012-01-16

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/16/good-wife-watch-jason-biggs-jim-cramer-and-bitcoin-get-in-on-the-action/

It was a curious choice for “The Good Wife”: an episode built around an obscure digital currency called Bitcoin that many of the show’s viewers probably assumed was fictional. (If any Bitcoin evangelists find their way to this post, they can abuse me for calling the virtual money system, which went online in 2009, “obscure.”)

Perhaps this reviewer's perspective is how many regular viewers of The Good Wife will perceive the bitcoin aspect of the story.

"... this incredibly uninteresting case..."

Susan Toepfer is Entertainment/Features Editor of More magazine, but judging by this quote, perhaps fashion is more her thing than storylines.

Wow.. the part about bitcoin being 'incorporated' was a bit weird, but it was entertaining and way better than I thought it would be!

1439  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in tv show -The Good Wife - Episode 3.13 - Finding Mr. Bitcoin on: January 15, 2012, 02:05:20 AM
If this article ( http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/13/the-good-wife-graham-phillips_n_1200021.html ) is anything to go by, it looks like regular watchers of the show will be more engrossed by the ongoing soap-opera story arcs and ignore the 'bitcoin' stuff as mere filler.

1440  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vending machine on: January 14, 2012, 12:23:19 PM
If you want to trade in BTC without being connected to blockchain and announced transactions, you will have a tough time to think it up working.

For example, one could pay by giving an address with given amount and private code for that address, but still, the vending machine must check if it is still in the blockchain and ASAP transfer that money out of that address.

Everything will be connected. Soon or later.
Ahhhhh Thats what i missed, The sending of fake coins, DOY!

It could just use a low bandwidth connection to the vending machine operator's private server systems which do the actual blockchain checking.
These servers could even issue the payment addresses to the machine so that the private keys never need to be stored on the vending machine or even travel to/from it.
