15501  Economy / Economics / Re: What is bitcoin for? on: February 03, 2014, 12:56:21 PM
OK, I've been in the bitcoin game for a year now.  Mining and trading.  But I've only made one commercial transaction - to pay for a VPN.  It seems to me that the vast majority of BTC are just being bought and held for speculation.

So, apart from speculation, what are people using BTC for now and what sort of transactions will it be used for in the future?

Well it's a decentralised currency, so hopefully it'll be used as a medium of exchange for anything you wish to purchase. People are holding it because they're treating it as an investment and figure that it'll grow in value with more mainstream adoption. I'm holding mine in the hope that I'll be able to get a lot more in the future than I can now, but I'm very much looking forward to hopefully be able to spend it on whatever I want.
15502  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why are BTC prices not moving ? on: February 03, 2014, 12:47:38 PM
Of late BTC prices seem to have just been stuck ... why is it not moving up or down like earlier ?

Isn't a steady price what we want? A wildly fluctuating price is counter-productive to BTC as a currency. However, I'm sure the price will change on the back of some good/bad news. Patience is all that's needed here.

Well yea we want some stability but not for sooo long .. im sure everybody remembers the daily fluctuations we used to have ... now it just feels like ages have past (relatively in the crypto world) without much of a movement in prices.

Why do we not want stability? If you want to use it as a currency then this is great.
15503  Economy / Speculation / Re: '100 BTC ATMs land in Australia' on: February 03, 2014, 12:39:17 PM
100 ...lolz

Talk about a bit of an exagerration

If i can read through the lines we are talking about 2

1 Melbourne
1 Sydney

I saw another article that mentioned 100 too. Where have they got that number from? Thought it sounded a bit extreme.
15504  Economy / Economics / Re: "Blue-Chip"-Coins on: February 03, 2014, 12:35:17 PM
Hey there!

Well, so two weeks ago I was sure that I'd daytrade my 0,01 BTC-Investment into the kind of money, that would put the Treasure of the King under the Mountain to shame. I'm getting there, but it might take actually longer then I expected. I'm at 0,1 BTC now. Mainly because I've bought 0,1 BTC after I've lost the 0,01 BTC the Second I hit that Buy-Button for TIPS and MOON at their very hights.

Now I've come to think that a more longterm approach could be wiser.

What coins are here to stay? I've heard good things about Peercoin, Quarkcoin and Earthcoin. Where can I put my money into, without the worth of the coin jumping around like crazy?

Heard good things from who? Users on here who hold lots of those particular coins? Nobody can tell you what coins are here to say, you're best just looking at the evidence yourself and making your own mind up, but the biggest bet in the longterm would probably just be to stick with BTC.

15506  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TigerDirect made $500,000 in Bitcoin on: February 03, 2014, 12:18:23 PM

once the miners spend their coins, i don't think you will see these numbers sustain themselves.

There will be a big drop-off in Bitcoin sales after the initial hype dies down, but all we need is for the sales to steadily continue as all businesses benefit greatly from the free advertisement they get just by being associated with Bitcoin. Hopefully bigger businesses will soon take note.
15507  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-02-03] 100 Bitcoin ATMs coming to Australia on: February 03, 2014, 12:13:31 PM
That's a lot of the machines. Have they actually sold the ATMs to companies or are they operating them themselves? Articles doesn't say.
15508  Other / Meta / Re: It's Time For Theymos To Kill The Alt Section on: February 03, 2014, 12:03:47 PM
It pretty funny that the heavy traffic is stuffed into one subforum and the management refuses to create sub forums or a system of organizing the information. Bitcointalk.org OWES the community to ban altcoin discussion here and let someone else take over and do it right. As it was stated before in this thread, the resources and interest are not here to support altcoins the way they need to be supported.

I'm sure the alt-coin community will re-organise itself somewhere else eventually, but I agree it probably would be better being all or nothing. If we can have subforums for mining and a marketplace then I don't see the harm in having a giveaway section too, but doesn’t look like the powers that be will change their mind on this regardless.

you have 84 activity and almost 5000 posts. thats fucking ridiculous.

Nearly all of them Pointless.

That's another reason why something needs to be done about those paid sigs, especially if they pay per postcount. It encourages senseless spamming and reduces the quality of this forum.

Can you please explain how nearly all of my posts are pointless? The only pointless spam here is you posting about something that is off-topic and baseless.
15509  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Crypto Sex Toys - 3k+ Products! - Top brands on Sale! on: February 03, 2014, 11:58:04 AM
How does this go? Much thanks to DOGE for the massive traffic spike, such hits.....anyway's thanks for the reddit posts was awesome!

Has Doge been delisted now?

Nope, it is back today, sometimes I need to temporarily take coins off for a variety of reasons, BTC-e is the main exchange I use and I try to keep those coins live as a priority. The reason DOGE came down (along with the cryptsy alts) was to do with the BTC / China FUD and price fluctuations alongside low volume weekends, I wanted to see how far BTC will fall (if at all) and how it will affect the alt prices before I set the coins live again.  This is to offset the risk from a pattern of major price drops resulting in high alt sales volume, I don't like to cancel orders so I tend to de-list the coin for a few days until the values have settled or I can see how the market is trending.

You are also correct that DOGE has been an excellent performer for sales and community support, only trailing BTC and LTC, and I plan to have the coin in a new more mainstream store opening this week, while I dont quite 'get' the coin I intend to make it a permanent fixture.

Ah ok. I noticed SXC was gone also which I thought was weird removing that one, but thanks for the explanation. And nobody other than its users get Doge haha.
15510  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Beginner Goals? on: February 03, 2014, 11:54:53 AM
Hi,
I am new to bitcointalk and I am looking to start helping additional development on-top of the bitcoin/litecoin protocols.  This is my goal in the next 3-6 months. What is your goals as a new beginner?  And how did you hear about BitcoinTalk originally?

Welcome, my goal is to own more bitcoin.  Smiley

Mine too  Grin. But also to spread the word and benefits of Bitcoin. I would love to be able to spend coins on whatever I want as a long term goal, but obviously that's out of my hands.
15511  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: how beneficial is buying mining hardwares, need some advice on: February 03, 2014, 11:53:28 AM
If you can afford to spend that much on mining gear then go for it, but I'd advise against mining BTC altogether now and just mine an alt that you can trade for BTC and make your money that way.

I also recommend using linux / ubuntu. I'm no computer whiz and ubuntu is just as easy as windows, except much safer. You can always keep your windows operating system and just pop in a usb or CD to boot up linux to deal with your Bitcoins.

Where did you learn to run it along side windows like that?   And i assume any ubuntu disk from ebay is fine?

The software is free. Don't pay for them. And you just pop the usb or disc in and run from there. No installing necessary and you're free to keep on using windows.
15513  Economy / Goods / Re: Lightbulbs? (and a small intro) on: February 03, 2014, 11:50:09 AM
I read something about selling lightbulbs.  Being new to the bitcoin scene, and being aware of the scams (there are scams everywhere, so I expected it)  it is sometimes hard to tell how legit some of these posts are.

Someone is selling empty water bottles apparently.... that had to have been a joke, which I assumed, and is where I read something about lightbulbs being worth something... which was clearly a troll.

I'm talking about the incandescent lightbulb ban.

The guy selling waterbottles is joking. Yes, there are lots of scams, but if you use escrow you should be fine.
15514  Economy / Goods / Re: Lightbulbs? (and a small intro) on: February 03, 2014, 11:23:52 AM
What ban are you talking about?

Just use escrow and I'm sure you'll build up trust overtime. Can't imagine there's much of a market for lightbulbs here though  Cheesy.

15515  Economy / Goods / Re: Northern Outdoor Cannabis Seeds on: February 03, 2014, 11:19:44 AM
250+ seeds for $200 is a pretty good deal.

bitcoin for drugs...isn't this why the feds are all over this currency?

Only if you believe the propaganda.

He's only selling seeds and that's not illegal in many places.
I'm really surprised by the stuff that gets sold on this forum.

Why are you surprised?

The Dyatlov Pass Incident
I think it's way underrated, it's not really scary but it keep you on your toes at all the time. Worth at least an 8 in my opinion.
I don't like movies where people have no common sense. Don't want to spoil the movie for others, but let's say you go on an expedition with friends and find something misterious like hidden bunker. Why the hell would you try to enter alone without telling the rest and with no proper equipment or communication devices.
Same with typical horror or thriller when someone chases you and wants to kill you, there's a struggle, and he falls, you don't run away screaming. You hit him until he passes out or at least take his weapon with you and run.

Horror movies aren't really based in reality. It's the same with haunted house movies. Would you really stay in a house if you're being terrorised by a demon and being thrown against walls and shit?
15518  Other / Off-topic / Re: Silkroad 2.0 on: February 03, 2014, 10:50:22 AM
Will be taken down in a few months again USA gets more and more BTC... Smiley Bit safer now though.

Good point. These marketplaces need to start using altcoins more. We don't want the feds owning 20% of all bitcoins.

Plus nobody wants to spend their Bitcoins haha.
15519  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: "You already posted that" "Your last post was less than 360 seconds ago" on: February 03, 2014, 10:40:54 AM
Yeah this pretty much does my head in. It even counts for pms so you cant even have a damn conversation with someone without clock watching!

It is annoying but these time-limits go down the more activity you get, so it quickly becomes unnoticeable.
15520  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Overstock CEO Reveals He Now Holds Millions in Bitcoin on: February 03, 2014, 10:39:49 AM
That's interesting. Glad he decided to hold on to some. I wonder if he bought the Bitcoins elsewhere or did he take them out of the companies stash?
