1. I'm afraid XRP as a currency will take some market share from Bitcoin, if Ripple becomes successful. The Ripple system is much more traceable than Bitcoin, that's why Google is interested. Most folks out there are not privacy-aware and just don't care.
2. Also, Ripple will allow Bitcoin-IOUs and thus enable fractional reserve lending with Bitcoin. It will practically extend the 21 million money supply.
It's senseless to bash on Ripple. If ripple.com fails, someone else will pick up these ideas. It's only a question of time. The market space for digital currencies has been opened, and there will be many players over time.

Können wir die "deutschen wirtschaftsnachrichten" nicht mal verbieten? Die seite ist absolut unseriös und schreibt nur mist.

In my opinion, a basket doesn't necessarily have to be an actual currency, it can be just an index.

Recycling would almost certainly be more economic and cheaper too, were it not for 3rd world (child) labor working in the mines.
Not to speak about hemp for oil and plastics, which grows like crazy and would make most of the military industrial big oil complex obsolete...

been a while since I read it, but first, he wanted Terracoins to have demurrage (Freicoin would offer that), and second, I don't remember he said anywhere it would be decentralized and P2P. He'd be fine with a centralized bureaucratic currency.

What would an Embrace, Extend, Extinguish strategy for Bitcoin look like?
Every wallet comes with extra features already.
BitPay or CoinBase let you send bitcoins to an email address (afaik). Guess that will also be a feature of the MS client then.
When you can't do the same with the free BitcoinQT, people won't understand it.

He almost certainly wants to get an impression of the popularity of Bitcoin when he's asking random people about it.
Maybe he's been asked by the establishment what he can do against Bitcoin, that's why there is this meeting, so he will probably come up with something built into Facebook (much better than those Facebook Credits of course). That way he can also hurt his Winklevii arch rivals and kill two birds with one stone.

They'll learn what Bitcoin is, they will assume you can access all bitcoins you have anywhere all the time easily (brainwallet, or even paper wallets at home, they'll say you could just phone your mom and ask her to scan one of those you left at home and send you by email), so for capital control reasons, they will want to know how many bitcoins altogether you have. And you will have to sign your statement and will be held liable if necessary.

debit-cards are much more strongly tied to an account they can track down if necessary and your identity.

...how many bitcoins you totally have. Just my guess.

Most of the "Irrationality" that bothers economists is the behaviour of crowds. Market bubbles for example.
Sure, but this evens out over time. The question is just the time frame. Bitcoin, because unregulated, may move a lot faster than other assets. Also, what happens during bubbles and bursts? Weak hands -> strong hands. Evolution and all.

We're not perfect rational efficient machines, and that is what makes us human.
I mean, what would a world of robots look like? Maybe some techno-transhumanists would disagree with me, but I would not want to live in such a world, as I feel something would be missing. Would robots paint pictures or play music?
Now with that said, I also find the irrationality in economics argument silly, because maybe some individual humans may act "irrational" at times, but the point is to identify and predict general tendencies and trends, such as that people will be more likely to buy the same product from the dealer that offers them the best price.

Bitcoin can never be instant exchange.
Who wants you to wait 2 days?

We can use price indexes like gold, silver, barrels of oil, Big Macs, whatever

You don't think that a guy with an IQ of 180 can think that far ahead and plant some false leads? LOL. He's pretty much a perfect fit in every way.
capable yes, but as said, it'd be a sacrilege... aren't you familiar with the FOSS crowd?
