Meantime it looks like we hit 6k. I was listening to Bloomberg yesterday and they were saying shorts were very high with Bitcoin. When will we see them all implode?

easiest overclocks (well aside from the bios stuff from the pentium II on up) was the jumpers on the 486. just pick 25,33 or 40, then select the multiplier via jumper and see if it booted. cant remember if my 386 could do that. before that there was the clock crystal replacement on the IBM AT. never tried it on mine though.

dont remember what the cpus were that you just added more L2 cache via stuffing chips in empty sockets on the mobo. 386 im guessing.
Those were 386's. You could use an 82385 cache controller chip to add L2 cache to them, but it still only ran at the backside clock speed (up to 50mhz). 486's had on-die cache that could run faster and didn't run into DMA slowdown issues like the 386.

Somewhere around here I have my Mountain accelerator board: It was an 8 bit board that plugged into an 8086 with a ribbon cable that replaced the CPU. On the board was a 12mhz 80286 CPU with 256k of 16 bit cache. What was insane was that since it plugged into the CPU and 8 bit bus, device access was at 8 bit speeds (2 clocks per word) which still made it slow as dirt.

Ah the good old days....

Hm. Things are looking pretty good this week.
1844  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 03, 2019, 10:52:49 AM
Interesting. So what is the "real" price then? Stamp?
1845  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 03, 2019, 03:25:57 AM
The spread on Bitfinex is fucking retarded.

What an utter shit exchange.
Remember when this happened to Gox?

Since we're deciphering code anyway... can I ask if anyone knows what this is?

-.. . ..-. .. -. .- - . .-.. -.--  ..-. .-. . . -- .- ... --- -.
It's not the Shrine or the regular masons, nor is it IooF. I don't think it's KoC either. I have seen that before, for some reason firefighter secret society comes to mind.

I'll have to look into this one.

Capitalism just works.

Here is the obvious answer to censorship:

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/30/youtube-algorithm-changes-negatively-impact-google-ad-revenue.html

What opponents of capitalism don't understand is that it is essentially a global voting mechanism. It's the closest we have ever gotten to democracy.
Voting with our dollars, that's the only real vote indeed. Which means politics is not where effective voting happens today. Mostly.
So Youtube killed a whole bunch of socks, and is making less money as a result.

Little like saying that my government is making less money because they are not using civil forfeiture anymore (like they would do that).

Can't say I'd get worked up over either. Socks should make socktube and get all that ad revenue there.

Except that people don't want to view socks, so they use fraud to hijack youtube (and make YT money).

Hm.....

Suppose it was transparent and properly compensated as opposed to the way it was now, e.g. if depositors were paid proper interest for their deposits used in fractional reserve schemes, would you still see it that way?

If yes, why?
Sure. Because it would be transparent and properly audit-able. However it would never be used: People who ran scams with opaque systems would offer higher rates of interest and it would be priced out.

See "Bad money drives out good".

Quote
The way I see it is that banks used to be necessary but not much longer will be, especially as Bitcoin establishes a status as an appreciating currency. As such I expect different banks running different schemes to attract clients, such as paying out profits made from fractional reserve trades.

They are inherently instruments of fraud, and are highly profitable because of said fraud followed by bailouts. The CDO issue of the 2000's is a perfect example of how everyone wants to do this because you make a lot of money with the risk going to the suckers.

I expect banks to drop.... go away. That is why I will not work for one.
1849  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 01, 2019, 10:44:38 PM
Fractional reserve has been working for banks for hundreds of years now, don't see why it can't for Finex. Even knowing what we know now people still hold their money there, it would take 75% of people to withdraw now for them to go belly up and it doesn't look like we're close to that happening, in fact they'd probably be "safe" running at 50% fractional reserve.
You have hit the nail on the head Darue: FR has been working for *BANKS* for hundreds of years, usually to the detriment of people who put their money in these banks then find it gone when the usual fraud followed by bank run happens. Or when banks/govt inflate the currency, meaning people who do not sotre their money chits in banks find it worth less and less over time.

Bitcoin is supposed to be immune to this: You can't commit fraud with it because if you say you have a bitcoin it's easy to prove and if you can't prove it you don't have one. With dollars it's easy to fudge the numbers because there are few objective ways to verify the amount. Same with our beautiful "tethers" and other private blockchains (which is why private blockchain offers no more security than a good old fashioned database plus logs: If you can fuck with the database and logs you can fuck with the private blockchain). This is why I like bitcoins. And this is why I think they will have a problem in today's commerce world: Since you can't inflate them (12.5 every 10 minutes, even God can't change that) and since they are easy to prove or disprove you need some sort of intermediary that you can fuck with to cheat people.

Enter Tether! Once private companies can convince you to exchange your non-fuckable bitcoins for easily fuckable tether you can have the "promises" be worth what they truly are. Remember, our current AG has said that he ain't prosecuting people for lying, so why not lie and say it's 100% backed, then "backed by things" then when called out get a "well, it's 74% backed by stable instruments".

Bullshit: You're just stealing people's money, like banks have done for centuries. Welcome to the club, pal.

The preceding has been a certified Lightfoot batshit rant. Contents may have settled during shipment.

That's the problem with fiat, you're really not in control of it. Even if they did have customers best interest (and i do believe that to be the case, who would you kill the golden goose?) they had to work with banks to transfer a lot of fiat, and they have little control over that process. Best they can do is diversify and play whack a mole with banks freezing their accounts. It was obvious from the start i just can't believe that market didn't correctly price that risk in. In any case, look at it this way, they just had an audit and are confirmed to have 74% of their funds, which is much more than i thought they did.
Tether: Private chain with only 26% lies. That we know of.

It's just funny to watch in action. Fraud that used to take 100 years to expose can take place in a year or so. I need more popcorn.
1852  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 30, 2019, 10:45:16 PM
So Tether, the 100% backed by fiat 100% stable coin that no one can mine because it's SPECIAL is really only 74% backed by assets.

https://www.coindesk.com/tether-lawyer-confirms-stablecoin-74-percent-backed-by-cash-and-equivalents

Man what is it with people? Everyone falls for the infinite temptation of fractional-reserve banking. Everyone seems to just say the best intentions but really be full of 100% USDA horseshit.

Bitcoin is simply not going to succeed because you can't commit fraud with it. If you have a bitcoin you have a bitcoin. If you don't have a bitcoin you simply can't say you have a bitcoin.

Sad that the only thing which will work in this world is fraud.
I'm surprised to see how many people thought the tether folks wouldn't be fuck heads. No way did I expect them to not attempt to invest tether USD and profit off it while no one is aware.
Of course they would. The statement "This time it's different" was told to me when I walked from a dot.com in 2000. It has the same validity as "I won't cum in your mouth".....

I trust bitcoin for some weird reason. It's why I accept payment for work in it, and why I value it. Not for stupid shit like dollars, but because the idea behind it is a good one: "No, I actually will not cum in your mouth and here is the proof".

If it's a deeper problem then a bad/loose connector (which I doubt unless it's failing boot) then oof. I'd have to think if I have the balls to do SMd repair on something that high-stakes....

A fellow microsolderer? Respect.

"You can never use too much flux."
Flux is nice, air tools are wonderful, and a good pre-heater is God in a box. Yes, I have done a fair amount of surface mount and through hole repairs, including a fair bit of bitcoin miner repairs. These days I'm working on other things as mining repair is not too profitable.

Keeps me out of trouble :-)

Well I left him/her/it a quick comment; if it's booting up properly but doesn't talk it's possible there is some crap in the USB socket that's blocking the tx/rx lines. Bit of isopropyl alcohol should clear it.

So Bitfinex has been playing games with tether. Kind of like a bank.

You know, I turned down a fucking executive job at a bank because I don't believe in them anymore. They create money with a wave of the hand, and you can't create bitcoin with a wave of your hand.

But it sure seems like you can create tether with a wave of your hand..... Fuck banks, and fuck that.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled panic.....

I don't know anything about opiates (don't care for addictive substances or anything that you could die from), but what LSD does is create new neurons as well as new connections between neurons (which is why some experience synesthesia under the influence).
It's pretty much what happens when you learn new things and also why it's so powerful in treating depression by breaking up bad habits (or thought patterns) through the creation of new ones.

This can go out of control if you take retarded amounts in retarded environments and situations, but responsibly (low dose, no mental issues, physically and mentally healthy, not on medication, no combination with other drugs etc.) this isn't just harmless but can also be a very useful tool

One time I used small doses to study and the results were pretty remarkable. You can go much deeper than you ever could hope to in a sober state, although it's very easy to "overdose" in the sense that you'd be too busy staring at random stuff and going off on tangents instead of focusing on your task.
That's kind of my point: LSD and such have the ability to change a lot more than mood or mere behaviors. It has the ability to literally rewire your brain at the hardware/microcode level and change who you are. I know this because I have diaries and baselines before and after from many years ago. Real change, radical change. The kind of change that can cure an alcoholic, that kind of change.

Which can be done for good, but our brains run pop up blockers and malware software for a reason: To keep crap from getting embedded in our minds. LSD goes right around that stuff, and can lay your brain open to anyone with access. That's dangerous as fuck.

5MEO-DMT is similar stuff in some ways, but doesn't seem to have the time to rewrite the hardware.

That said, I can't believe another **ERROR*** no it just turns out Bitfinex is in a pissing match with SEC.
1858  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 26, 2019, 01:44:35 AM
Shit happens, but some folks are just begging for it. I'm sure a normal dose of, say, L, couldn't do that to a normal guy.
Depends. Most drugs affect the application layer of what makes you.... you. They make small changes that go away when rebooted. Pot and alcohol fall in this category.

A few affect the operating system that the thing called "you" runs on. They make more substantive changes in how you act and change a number of things that make you you. Good opiates fall in this category.

LSD and such twiddle around with your firmware or in some cases your microcode. They can change who you *are*, and can rewrite the thing your mental operating system runs on. Use with care.

Price is going higher. Are we close to hitting the $6000 next month? Any guesses?
This is just a return to 6502, where we will be stuck again forever.....
