221  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Can Bitcoin save a nation that owes a lot of money / Debt on: March 03, 2024, 06:35:25 AM
Usually Bitcoin price doesn't really rise when you want and as much as you'd like (although now, fueled by ETF, the rules may change).
However, buying Bitcoin costs money, so the country may have to get into more debt and also the money will be locked in bitcoins, not fueling the economy.

But from what I know, El Salvador has pretty much done the same: bought bitcoins, although their economy looks bad. And obviously, IMF was far from happy.
This for us, bitcoiners, may look like a fun fact, but if the country needs more money afterwards, the standard banks borrowing more will not give that.
So it may be more than tricky to solve this just by buying some bitcoins. Plus it depends on luck and also how fast they'd move. Because buying near ATH is another problem.

The COPA vs CSW trial is something I don't consider as any news, since the truth is crystal clear

The truth was crystal clear from the beginning, but the fact nobody stepped up for real has allowed CSW bully a lot of honest people simply for being honest and bitcoin supporters.
The current trial, apart of being quite a show, it should (I hope!) mark the end all that mess.

Is the halving good in Bitcoin?  What is the main benefit of it?

It becomes more expensive (2x) to mine Bitcoin (one gets half of the amount for same effort and electricity). And as the miners tend to be the ones selling the bigger amounts of bitcoin (to support their business' expenses, for example), it translates sooner or later into an increase of the price.

Many consider the price of Bitcoin as made of 2 components: the price of mining it and the speculation related extra. I agree to them. This being said, on the long term the ETF may be the one that could reduce the volatility. But that will happen only after some rounds of competition in accumulation (i.e. possibly even wilder volatility for the first 4-years cycle).
But I am no expert, I just express my logic and expectations. I may be right, or I may be wrong. Time will tell.

PS. In the "what's new", it's not just the ETF and halving. I would add as kind of news the ordinals (kind of NFT on Bitcoin blockchain) and COPA vs CSW trial.

The question is: can we check the restoration words on Ledger Live or, if we've lost them, do we have to send them to another wallet and write down the new words?
I assure you that there are many more distracted people than you think... Not to mention forgetfulness, moving house, unexpected destruction, etc. etc. etc.

If you can check that on Ledger Live, maybe Ledger could also get those words. It would be incredibly unsafe!
Checking on the actual device - let's say it's okay - but leaving the device is a very bad idea.

And if you lose your seed you can still create a second wallet and send your coins there. Of course, it's advised you create the second wallet in a safe environment (possibly another HW!).
However, it's an unnecessary headache imho. Keeping physical seed in a good place is the easy approach. (If you forget where, that can cause a couple of hours of panic, but in most cases you will find it).
226  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Seeds Bitcoin on: March 02, 2024, 01:22:53 PM
I don't know if it counts, it has happened for me with an altcoin (Monero), many years ago. I've put the seed words somewhere safe (heh, not sure why, since the amount were not that much) and after a couple of months I've forgot where that was.
I've found it eventually, but I don't remember if that was in the same day or not.

The more interesting part is that I still own a small amount and, since I don't actually use them and I don't have them in an active wallet, the risk to get in the same situation again is actually quite real.

But with Bitcoin? Nope!
227  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Seed and hardware wallets on: March 02, 2024, 07:05:41 AM
I haven't tried every wallet on the market. According to my latest tests, you can't check your seed with the ledger, for example, but you can with a bitbox. (handy if you've lost the words, for example, but have access to your wallet and want to write them down somewhere). It seems to me that being able to review restoration words is very important for a beginner, as you don't always have the right reflexes at first. What do you think? This information (whether or not recovery words can be accessed) is never found in wallet descriptions. (unless I'm mistaken)

I think that this "lack of a feature" can be seen as an extra security measure. The first thing that comes into my mind is what if somebody has multiple wallets, based on the same seed and very few standard English words. While, if knowing the PIN, only one can be emptied, with this "feature" and a dictionary based attack, all the wallets can be emptied.
But maybe I am thinking too far and was just seen as an unnecessary feature, since people should properly save their seed words somewhere else.

PS. Mersi de anunt.

Visit

It's a very nice feature. I always had a weakness for custom, better looking QR codes.

I will add a request though. @dzungmobile has a very valid point. Never trust any website. And my request is to add a step to your tutorial:
Scan the resulted QR yourself and make sure it contains the data you expect.

just we can not find the problem if for all other users it works fine, unless somebody will cooperate with our support and show his issue. Maybe you are using bad proxy or something.. maybe old browser with turned off javascript..  Maybe cloudflare blocks your ip.. It could be anything. just for all modern browser and internet our website works fine.

Latest browser, javascript on, but also some extensions (Decentraleyes, ClearURLs). No proxy. I don't know how to check about cloudflare, but since clouflare leaves me be on bitcointalk I'd say I'm fine.

Ok, and then how do you get the money out of your wallet? Just click on the "send" option and enter my exchange address and then withdraw?

Yes, one option is to send some coins to exchange, exchange there back to fiat and withdraw you your bank.
Or you can get a Bitcoin card - a VISA or Mastercard debit-like card that you can top up with bitcoin and spend in shops like any other card (of course, it's recommended to not keep that much bitcoin on such cards, the hardware wallet is much safer)
233  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do we even need bitcoin mixers? on: February 24, 2024, 09:10:41 PM
I think we need to have as much tools as possible to achieve better privacy with bitcoin transactions.

Completely agreed.

Whoever keeps millions on a centralized exchange is an idiot, period.
All big traders are holding coins on centralized exchanges, and if you didn't notice Coinbase exchange is custodian for most Bitcoin ETF's so far  Tongue
https://blockworks.co/bitcoin-etf

 Cheesy Cheesy
Coinbase is probably acting already like a bank. And businesses keep billions at banks. I hope that Coinbase are not idiots and have those coins in cold storage and also insured.

Of course, examplens is also 99% correct. Most exchanges cannot be trusted (I would not trust Coinbase either, but that's me). For us, here on Bitcointalk, self custody is the best option. For the big companies there's no difference they keep their wealth in a bank or at Coinbase.
234  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: PayWithUs - Virtual cards - NO KYC. Pay with Crypto. on: February 24, 2024, 09:02:08 PM
We already got hundreds users  from whole world. So probably issue in your side. You can text to @paywithusnet to find out what is going on in your side

No offense, but 99.9% of the websites that interest me work perfectly.
Imho it's in your interest to find out what odd scripts, cookies or applications try to embed in your website and adjust/fix, else you will lose potential customers with same "issue on their side".
235  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gary Gensler: "Bitcoin is not that decentralized" on: February 24, 2024, 08:55:50 PM
And allow me to be a bit mean: maybe he confused it with Ethereum.
I'm pretty sure that he knows exactly what he's doing and saying, he's just saying stuff in his own interest, that is the difference.

Indeed, his confusion is almost certainly intentional and possibly just faked, so he can confuse others.
I completely agree that his statement is in line with his interest, not with the reality. I've said it many times that we should never trust personalities' declarations.

Is your website down because I can't access it due to slow loading of your landing page.

I'm curious to try your service. By the way do you have a trustpilot reviews or social media accounts?

Nope! Its up and running. you can text to our support to telegram @paywithusnet to check what is going on in your side.

In certain configurations (or countries??) it's simply not working.
I stated that from start. It's still the same for me.

It show an empty (blue-ish) page with only the live chat icon bottom-right. And this no matter ublock origin is on or off.
237  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help with bitcoin storage on: February 24, 2024, 08:36:11 PM
1. Make an account at a *very* reputable exchange, maybe even in your country. Do a bit of research on which are reputable, what are the fiat transfer fees to exchange, what are the withdrawal fees from the exchange. Keep in mind that you may have to give your ID.

2. Start buying Bitcoin, but keep for now the coins at the exchange.

3. Do some research and buy a hardware wallet (HW). There are plenty to choose from, but you have to research and/or ask around to find out which on you'd prefer. After you receive it learn to use it (you can probably use with Electrum or maybe with its own software; it depends on your preference too), reset it a couple of times, then at some point write down (pen and paper, nothing online) a seed, copy/paste the first address, reset the HW again and this time restore from seed and check if the address is the same. Now you're good. That seed you'll keep very safe and offline. Safer than even your hardware wallet. An advice I've read is to keep it in multiple geographically separated locations.

4. From now on you can withdraw the coins from exchange to address(es) generated by your HW.

Keep in mind that withdrawal fees from exchanges are big and you may want to not withdraw too often.
Of course, if you do care a lot of your privacy, then you'll buy your HW first and learn to use DEX instead of the exchanges that ask for ID. But that may be a different learning curve.

PS. Afaik Metamask is about altcoins. If you only want Bitcoin I think that you can safely ignore it.
238  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A lot has changed in 10 years! on: February 24, 2024, 07:59:05 PM
Welcome back!
It's interesting that you've been gone for 10 years and my bitcointalk account is just celebrating its 10 years anniversary  Cheesy

Should I just sweep them and start again?

I'm not sure what is the logic behind this, but imho it's wrong.
If you have those addresses' private keys you are most probably still just fine.

And if you were in bitcoin so many years ago I hope that you know enough about computers to make yourself a Tails USB, start it up without internet (and no persistency!), open Electrum from there, enter your private key and see if the address it shows is the one you expect. Of course, this is only if you want to check for your peace of mind. And this will mean that the address(es) is/are fine and you don't have to sweep, which would mean fees (and since Multibit is out of order for so many years you cannot use it for sending coins away anyway, so you have to make your wallet off private key anyways first).

The things are more complicated mostly because if nowadays you are just a tad careless about your private keys you may end up with your coins gone forever.

So... what I would like to know is, what is the easiest way (if any) to continue to top up my kids 1BTC wallets without losing half to fees?

I would first make sure the old wallets are still OK (see above) and fund the same addresses.
Just you'll have to be careful on when and where you buy those coins and what amounts you withdraw, since on-chain fees are high some of the days (it's getting somewhat better now), but exchanges' withdrawal fees are awfully high. There maybe others can help suggesting where it's better to buy from and withdraw nowadays.
239  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Please stop blaming "the government" for lack of Bitcoin mass payment adoption on: February 24, 2024, 07:34:25 PM

While you are missing the fact that fiat money means central bank IOUs, usually endorsed by governments, hence they will prefer that (for inflation, for example) so no conspiracy needed, you have a valid point on slow confirmation and high costs (although I think that you've exaggerated "a bit" the fee, these days 2$ was enough, but I know the fees were much higher + some do overpay greatly).

Indeed, Bitcoin is not suitable yet for paying on chain at the grocery store of for coffee. On LN that goes well, but LN (or alternatives, who knows) need to make a leap out of their infancy yet.

Sadly, I fear that at the point we can pay for everything with Bitcoin, we will only get to own some satoshis, because others who don't care about current small problem, will hoard it and will use it as reserve currency.
What I mean is that you're right, but you should consider getting over this and still support bitcoin and stack sats.
240  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Paying using bitcoin on: February 24, 2024, 05:12:54 PM
Can you tell me how I can use my bitcoin in a shop that accepts bitcoin

Any shop, no matter it's online or physical, will accept bitcoin in the same way, since bitcoin is always online.

So if you don't want to use your phone, you can use a laptop for example, simply in the way you would do from home.
Just you'll need internet. And connecting to others' WiFi can be risky. So you may still need a phone for enabling mobile hotspot for your laptop...
Or, since your Ledger keeps your funds safe anyway, keep a partition/OS only for this kind of tasks, use your laptop with WiFi and reinstall it often.
