2281  Other / Meta / Re: 2013-02-02 Page views number wrong? on: February 04, 2013, 03:02:01 AM
Seems way off as other recent days are closer to 400k.

The webserver is now nginx instead of Apache.  I wonder if there are pageviews that don't hit the database and thus aren't being computed.[/quote]

Is there a way to know the real number, or if that is the real number what is the explanation. If it is wrong can it be corrected?

Really messes up the chart correlating the exchange rate compared to forum activity, eh?
2282  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Butterfly labs single SC on: February 04, 2013, 02:47:04 AM
how many bitcoins in total do you think it will generate? if you had to guess.

A guess is all that it would be because we don't know the future difficulty levels.  Future difficulty levels are dependent on cost and availability of ASIC hardware, as well as the future exchange rates.
2283  Economy / Economics / Re: Which country will be the first to use gold? on: February 04, 2013, 02:28:24 AM
1 India, since gold is already widely distributed amongst the population.

Also interesting are these plans from the RBI (India's central bank):

Quote
It wants banks to encourage products linked to accepting physical gold as deposits and investing public money in gold related products, and extend loans against gold as collateral.

Indians own about 20,000 tonnes of gold, or three times the holdings of the U.S. Federal Reserve, in jewellery, bars and coins.

Which country would use gold

From another thread:

It took decades but finally the government of Kelantan (a state in Malaysia - They have a federal system like the USA) last year listened and introduced Gold and Silver currency which is legal tender in that state. They are even paying civil servants using it.

Quote
Another Malaysian state (Perak) has now introduced its own Gold Dinar and Silver Dirham coins. Kelantan was first, in August of 2010.

In place of VIRES IN NUMERIS, they'd say 0.01 BITCOIN.[...[

I'd just make them available as roll-your-owns, with the spot on the back for a private key).

[...]
The only thing stopping me is

I'ld be more concerned about being the "issuer" of a coin marked 0.01 BTC  (where 0.01 BTC is worth about twenty cents today) which is [potentially going to be] floating around without any 0.01 BTCs on it.
2287  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info - Bitcoin Block explorer & Currency Statistics on: February 03, 2013, 06:00:51 AM
[When I try to send, I get the message: "Insufficient funds. Value needed XXX BTC. Available amount xxx BTC

Just out of curiosity, have you tried using the transaction type "Custom" instead of "Quick Send"?  That way you can select which inputs are used and you can even set the fee to 0 (or whatever value you wish).    That might help to resolve your issue.
2288  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: So how on earth am I supposed to get bitcoins in the UK? on: February 03, 2013, 05:58:13 AM
They dont sell moneypaks in UK?

No, they don't.  MoneyPak is a product for U.S. only, however in the UK is a similar product, UKash.  A UKash can be used to buy SLLs (which can be traded for BTCs) at VirWoX, or UKash can be used at Mercabit.eu, Bitcoin Nordic, and more.  The fees aren't trivial but this is one way to pay with cash, with no bank system intermediary.

2289  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Quick bitcoin purchase on: February 03, 2013, 04:03:15 AM
Are there any websites that allow you to purchase bitcoins with credit/debit cards that send the BTC the exact same day, preferably soon after purchase?

They are frequently "out of stock", but if you monitor their forum thread you can learn when they've restocked.

If there is anyone else that would be willing to sell 2 BTC for $40 via PayPal, I'll be glad to purchase ASAP.

VirWoX accepts PayPal for the purchase of Second Life Lindens (SLLs).  You can then trade those SLLs on their exchange for BTCs:

2290  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: OTC Market for Altcoins? on: February 03, 2013, 03:29:03 AM
Just to test some waters here, do we think there is a market for peer-to-peer trading like bitcoin-otc (http://bitcoin-otc.com/)? I checked their website but there is no altcoins in the 'otherthing' column, which presumably supports quite a number of currency units.

When I enter a buy order for bitcoin, paying 2% premium I might enter it as:

;;buy 1.0 BTC at "{mtgoxlast} * 1.02" USD "Can pay with PayPal, Dwolla, Serve, etc."

So there is no restriction against any other currency.  I could today enter an order to pay for litecoin with bitcoin.  The order I enter for that is:

;;buy 300 LTC at 1.0 BTC

or vice-versa:

;;buy 1.0 BTC at 300 LTC

What I'm suspecting is that you are looking for a dynamic price method, just like how "{mtgoxlast} * 1.02" will dynamically calculate the price based on "market" price.  To provide that, the Gribble bot would need to be modified to become aware of the alt-coin exchanges.  I'm not even sure how you would determine "market price", since unlike bitcoin there isn't one dominant marketplace for each alt coin, as far as I know.  You could make an appeal to get at least some exchange quotes for some alts added to gribble.   Or you could make your own bot (using the open source gribble code) and have a separate OTC channel.
2291  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Is there any client-side program of bitcoin exchange transaction? on: February 03, 2013, 02:57:25 AM
I'm not sure what you are asking.  Can you explain?
I mean a program which I can download from somewhere and installed it on my computer, then I can see from it everything related with buying and selling of bitcoins anytime on the Mt.Gox, for example...

Here's something maybe like what you are looking for.

Of course, giving any piece of software access to your trading account or wallet is a risk to consider.

Hi, everybody, what I want to know is that if there is any client-side program of bitcoin exchange transaction, just like those of the stocks?

Is this the forum equivalent of this reddit post?

2293  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: multiple transactions in a block on: February 03, 2013, 01:51:23 AM
Am I right in thinking that a bitcoin can only be used ONCE per block ?

Nope.

Both the parent and child transactions can be included in the same block.  I'm using the term "child" to refer to one which uses an output of a "parent" transaction which also has not yet been included in any prior block.

If I remember correctly, the bitcoin.org client will arrange transactions in the block so that parent's transaction occurs first and child transaction(s) occur later in the block.   I am unsure if a block that has the order reversed would have any problem getting accepted by other nodes if that isn't the case.
2294  Economy / Economics / Re: Capital Gains & Other Income on: February 03, 2013, 01:17:34 AM
So how should I deal with taxes if I did buy them on an exchange and the spent them after they gained value?

Quote
[In the U.S] currency gains of $200 or less that arise from personal transactions (not for investment or business) are not taxable.  Any currency gains in excess of $200 per transaction (per trip or per purchase) are treated as a capital gain.

Bitcoin isn't recognized as a foreign currency so there might be many arguments about how it would be treated for tax purposes, with varying methods based on tax jurisdiction.

How can I create paper wallets when offline? I tried to access the site, but it won't load, because I'm not connected to the interenet

The .html from BitAddress contains all the javascript, images, css, etc., so all you need to do is View Source -> Save As (or whatever method your browser uses to save a copy of the .html to disk) and store it to a flash drive.

Then when you boot to an offline LIveOS, just open the .html from the flash drive.

If you are using a Linux-based LiveOS, you can probably do a sha1sum and it should be identical to the sha1sum the latest (to verify that the version on the thumb drive matches the one served by BitAddress):

2296  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase not paying??? on: February 02, 2013, 06:58:20 AM
Do you guys know any other solid exchanges that promise a date and follow through with it.

From another thread:

Pick one.

Oftentimes Dwolla works well for moving funds to the exchanges (Camp BX and Mt. Gox).    A Dwolla transfer from a bank takes several business days, but then to the exchange is for the most part same day.

Sounds like you are trying to provide exchange services without sufficient operating capital (cash).  Other fixed-rate exchanges that have made it through that sucky phase have done so after raising capital so that a couple day delay in moving funds doesn't put them out of business.  They still have periods where they can't serve the entire demand, but it isn't a regular occurrance (nor nearly-fatal to them as a business when it does occur).
2297  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Create a new wallet by importing an existing wallet file on: February 02, 2013, 06:34:42 AM
Any ideas?   Huh Huh Huh

Maybe it is timing out, or perhaps it is encrypted and the import utility can't accommodate wallets that have passphrase encryption enabled.

You might instead look at trying the Desktop Sync method for blockchain.info, where it grabs the keys from the wallet from your running Bitcoin-Qt.

Or you could export the keys from Bitcoin-Qt (right from the Debug window) and import those into blockchain.info/wallet
2298  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will there ever be a service that basically is a direct deposit for Bitcoins? on: February 02, 2013, 06:30:05 AM
In the future will we see people who sign up to some service... and they send their payroll paychecks to it.. they get immediately exchanged into bitcoins?

A paycheck sent via Direct Deposit is, in the U.S., using the ACH network.  Oftentimes, an employer or payment distribution service will require that the recipient account must be in the employee's name.      So this bitcoin conversion service would need to provide and individual account number for each customer so the account could be in that person's own name.   That isn't all that difficult but the demand today is probably too low to warrant developing such a service to do that.   Additionally, though paychecks from employers are rarely reversed, that doesn't mean they are non-reversible.  So this service would need to charge a fee sufficient to accommodate fraudulent transactions where it delivered bitcoins and at a later time the funds are clawed back for whatever reason (e.g., fraud where it really wasn't a corporate payroll but someone getting a direct deposit sent through fraudulent means.)

Until that day comes that a service like this exists, a service such as Coinbase (in the U.S.) can draw funds from a bank account using the direct deposit/ACH network.   It takes a few days for the coins to be delivered but it is a way that proceeds from a paycheck can be used to buy bitcoins without having to visit a bank or ATM.

A bank account might not even be needed.  Some prepaid card providers (e.g., Western Union prepaid card and American Express prepaid cards) provide an unique account number and allow Direct Deposit/ACH debits (for loading) and credits (for drawing form the balance).   AMEX BlueBird and Green Dot Go Bank also might have this service, if I remember correctly.  So presumably you can use the card for direct deposit of pay and then have Coinbase draw from the card just as if it were a bank checking account.
2299  Economy / Services / Re: Nice, DeadMansSwitch.net now accepting bitcoin... on: February 02, 2013, 05:39:16 AM
Getting closer here I think.

Real close.

So the encrypted paper wallet(s) go to family members.  DeadMansSwitch gets the decryption key, as does the trustee.  From another thread:

I changed the colour to blue for encrypted paper wallets to provide distinction between encrypted/unencrypted paper wallets - a version in the original yellow is included in case you really like yellow, just delete 'note_encrypted.png' and rename 'note_yellow.png' in its place.

This solution (encrypted paper wallets) robably isn't ready for prime time, but give it a few weeks and that will probably become a very good method for offline / long term savings that is secure.
2300  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase not paying??? on: February 02, 2013, 05:10:28 AM
I sold about 3 bitcoins Jan 24th and was told I was going to receive BTC on Jan 29th.

Were you using the Instant account verification or had you previously done the Deposit verification method to link a bank account?

[Edit:
Dont get me wrong Ive liked Coinbase up to this point...and Im extremely disappointed.

You've successfully purchased through them before?]
