2421  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Avalon 6 Vs Antminer S7, which one you will choose? on: October 29, 2015, 05:36:05 PM
hmmm... interesting thread.

Sorry, i don't mean to angrily bash your product even before it came out. I understand that production costs are productions costs and you want to avoid selling at a loss like SP did with the SP20.

I'm just struggling to understand the pricing scheme.

Miner manufactures just sell the rigs at the highest price which can make most of the money.

In China, a fair price for this stage of instock rigs (~0.25-0.3W/Ghs) is ~ 2200RMB/Ths, it's about 345$/Ths. exclude of shipping. By this price, you can sell as many as you want of them. So...

ng

QUESTION  can this be down clocked and under volted like the 4.1?

downclock: certainly

voltage: this is a string design...

I see, thanks for your replies, it does make sense, since in the end, it does not matter what is profitable to me, its about whats profitable for others. Thus it make sense for the miners to be so expensive if in China they can be bought out easily at 345$/TH/s.

For your second replies, you seem to mean it is not very prone to being undervolted because it is a string design. However it is possible to down volt the S5 by using 9-11v PSU's.

Is it simply not supported by the chips?

In China, I think most of the buyers now have nearly free electricity. So they can have profit much easier. I think this is why mining rigs' price are higher than you guys think.

About under voltage, the marking of "11.8-12.2V" means this miner will have a 3.65T (+- 10%) of the performance, we test it under this voltage. You can run it under a 11V PSU, and will get a better efficiency performance but slower speed. The hardware and software is fully support this case. but I think the lowest voltage is ~10V.

ng

Thanks for the reply. Such mean of undervolting is going to be of great interest for certain people.

It means that when your hardware will be "obsolete" in the future, when new gen miners do under 0.1J-0.14/GH, it will be possible to continue using the Avalon6 for some while longer at good profitability.

Therefore your Avalon6 gain a bit more value in the eyes of the "min/maxers" of Bitcoin mining. Smiley

2423  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is mining dead ? on: October 29, 2015, 05:17:23 PM
If there is no mining then there will not exist bitcoin, right?
I think that mining will not get dead as soon as new hardware are in the market.
When July comes then we will see how many devices will die because of no profit.

As long as BTC live, mining will never be dead "dead". When people say "damnit mining is dead" they are talking about themselves, in their conditions. Mining is not dead for people with better conditions than that person and that will remain true as long as Bitcoin lives.

Its a definite fact because if something very bad happen and BTC lose 70% of its value, mining will "die" for many, but it will normalize on 30% of its remaining value after the difficulty drop.

That's the point if there is no mining i think that bitcoin will disappear.
Mining itself will continue and i think that the new technology hardware will make it easier.
At least more profitable than the old mining rigs which for now and from July will not worth using them.

New technology doesn't help mining, it just make previous generations obsolete. Mining will ever end, and can never kill Bitcoin, it is the other way around. As long as BTC hold value, there will be mining. Because as long as BTC has value, mining has value.

As long as there is value, people will do it.

Its just a matter of perspective. For instance last months before the BTC raise, people were complaining/sadly saying they already were nearly breaking even by mining with a S5.

Meanwhile for many, it is still profitable to mine with S3 or even S1 or perhaps even worse ASICs.

Mining keeps being unprofitable for the most, but there is some that can be able to roi on the next months and keep the miner active, when bitcoin reach above values, sure there is new miners and solo miners still trying to mine btc as they can afford it.

Yup! That is why bitcoin is going up $300 ATM, this is a sign that mining is still alive and it is great that when I hear mining enthusiast and changing their thoughts about mining Grin

And this is HUGE for miners I was profitable at 230.... so I was not hurting to bad during then.  Bring it up to 300 a coin... and I'm doing and feeling pretty good right now.

Mining is far from dead.   I think it's a pretty good period for it during this change.

Yep, my only regret right now is, it has gotten harder to get good deals since people that were on the verge of selling their S5's are mostly keeping them for the time being.
Still some deals are about but many aren't pressed to sell unless they need room for better miners, right now.

It is a good time to be a miner right now.

There is a flip side to it though.  It means the miners you currently have will do better at keeping value with BTC prices going up.   Which having them worth something someday when I sell and switch miners which is nice bump in ROI's.

But for some one trying to acquire miners yes it would suck for sure.

Indeed, at 230 i was considering getting rid of my S1 one way or another, as the theoretical costs vs profitability was almost nullifying one another. However now they became profitable again, and thus i'm considering retiring my Zeus X3 first instead, since Scrypt has been going down the drain steadily since the LTC halving.

It look like i will be solely mining BTC from now on.

Holy crap check out coinbase were over 310 per btc. What a jump since 230... wow its looking like one good day.

Who would have guessed this?

Its really surprising, i wasnt expecting a 35% raise in BTC price so quick, meanwhile the difficulty is not really increasing by much, which is *very* surprising considering that this would bring back profitability with S5's and maybe even S3's for many user for the meantime.
2428  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How many confirmations to be sure about a transaction? on: October 29, 2015, 04:44:44 PM
Hello,
how many confirmations should a Bitcoin transaction have in order to be sure that the transaction could not be resolved?

Many exchanges use 6 confirmations to be sure that it is not a duplicate transaction. However there are other services that only use 3 and other only use 1 confirmation. But to be sure I guess you'll need 6

Even 1 conformation also accepted in some services. It's solely dependent on how much risk you're ready to take. I believe waiting for 3 confirmation are moderate policy for both the parties.

When i buy games or stuff online, it typically go through instantly, but if you end up scamming them, you're the one in trouble since they have your personal information. I understand for anonymous services, waiting for confirmation is an absolute must, however.
Most don't actually require valid information, you can easily just input a fake information and most would just accept it. It isn't a must for most sites, in physical stores, waiting for confirmations is rarely seen.

In that case, i assume they are dealing with something like Coinbase which i assume cover them in case of a double spending attack?

However the website that i use and give the good immediately, previously obtained my personal information. I guess one way or another they are protected. For instance if its physical product, the transaction will most likely have been confirmed by the time the packaging is ready to be shipped. If its virtual good, like a game on steam, then the code could be perhaps invalidated.
2429  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Circle Debit Card Vs Bank Account Withdraw on: October 29, 2015, 04:31:41 PM
But aren't there zero fees with circle?

The other thing is the BTC selling rate higher on circle or coinbase?  Thus even if coinbase has a 1 percent fee, it could be cheaper if they buy btc from you at a higher price?

okay so apparently you could have your circle account in either usd or bitcoin.  First off, do almost all of you keep it in bitcoin as oppose to usd?  Because it automatically converted it for me when i did a 0.02 btc transfer from electrum to circle.

So let say i transfer 250 dollars worth of btc from electrum to circle.  I then withdraw it to my bank account.  I will receive 250 dollars in few days.  However if i keep my balance in btc... let say i send 250 dollars worth of btc to my circle wallet.  It will show the amt of btc worth 250 on it.  However few days later... let say the amt of the btc is worth 230 for example.  Now let say i want to withdraw it to my bank account.  Is the moment i press withdraw to my bank of america... it will show the usd amount?  Thus no matter what matters in few days with btc fluctuations, it has no effect on me since it counts the moment i click request withdraw?

However, im curious if most of you here who use circle keep it in usd or bitcoin currency.  Im guessing almost all of you change it to bitcoin?  Surprised usd is the default.

Because unless its changed and is completely different in the USA, interact is one way, unless a refund is issued. So its okay for buying, but not for selling.
There has not been a real downside for an interact purchase so far, so you can buy instantly and sell over usually 1 day.

I use Coinbase however, the fees are way better here.

fees are less with circle or coinbase?

The fees are better with Coinbase, by far. Maybe there was an additional fees with Circle because i was in Canada, but anyways, Coinbase is something like 1%+0.7$ depending on if you buy or sell Bitcoin, take or add liquidity. A bit confusing but anyways, its cheap and sending money back to your back account take only like a day.

Best thing i have so far, especially since the Coinbase BTC value is a bit higher than some exchange, it cover the fee and beyond.

Yes that would be the case if it was true, the exchange right isint exactly tied to one or the other, its possible to get an better exchange rate at Circle, and at another point in time, get a better deal on Coinbase.

The thing is, maybe it was just for Canadian but the fee was 4%~ on Circle. If you,re in the US and there are no fee, then you would be better going with Circle, yes.

What is your price for the S5?

^

I'd do 260USD shipped to Canada for one. I'm not sure what shipping costs look like from the Europe, but if its not too costly, maybe we can work out a deal from this starting point. Let me know.
2431  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Avalon 6 Vs Antminer S7, which one you will choose? on: October 29, 2015, 04:05:32 PM
I don't think any of these companies price their products properly. Why? Cause people used to buy them for 10k+ no questions asked. Now? Everyone is buying out or trying to milk it.

Avalon6 is overpriced. Won't doubt it if the S7 lite price makes people think twice, too.

People accept the 4month ROI. It's easy to price everything accordingly.

Their target market are people with established and profitable rigs looking to upgrade in bulk not people trying to buy one for fun or hobbyist who view this as a lottery attempt. You're better off taking your cash to the actual lottery unless you're shelling out at least 5k.

Although i agree with your statement on the prices.  Those that bought the miners with btc suffer with the rise in prise.. those that bought with usd are laughing all the way to the bank.(that is the nature and risk of mining) Hell i bought 30 s1 when btc was 650 only to watch it drop all way down to 300 making the s1 not profitable.. had i not mined solo and found 7 blocks they would prolly never roi considering i bought them with cash.  With regards to the lottery, if you live in my state your gonna be surprised when its time to go cash in that ticket. Roll Eyes  http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-lottery-lawsuit-met-20150909-story.html  this was the cap at 25k article  and since our lovely govt cant ever get there shit together they have now a month later moved that down to 600$ (yet they continue to sell tickets like nothing is wrong!)  http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-lottery-delayed-payouts-met-20151014-story.html   what i find alarming is they are now expecting the small business to fork over the winnings for the smaller tickets and then those businesses will then have to fight illinois for the back payments.. Could put some small stores in a bind. Not like they give a shit.. but anyway thought id share this:)

Best Regards
d57heinz

Lol yuuuup. Its crazy.

And then people try to sell used equipment for more than original retail. Probably because they bought in bitcoin and can't keep up. Smh...

If the S7 lite is priced at 1k? Sign me up for 5-10 of those babies. That will kill the Avalon and I'm damn certain antminer will still make bank off us. Make it a black Friday sale if they wanna charge 1500 for it cause it's just a little better and people will buy it.

If not? Maybe a Avalon group buy. Negotiate that 900-1k price in a bulk order.

Yeah i do not really understand the pricing scheme. But if you look at Ebay, apparently people are still buying crap, like S1 or USB or old 3J/GH stuff at 0.30$/GH. I'm not sure if its because there's so many desperate/unknowledgeable gamblers that buy all they can find or what...

But other than that, i don't see why people would be buying the Avalon6 at 1300$, the S7 has better efficiency and cheaper $/GH.

And indeed if the S7 lite is indeed a 2 bladed S7, then unless Bitmain crank up the price like crazy, it will leave the Avalon6 in the dust.
2432  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Help: Solo mining with Avalon 4.2 Suite on: October 29, 2015, 03:52:47 PM
Just for test purposes i want to try to run miner in solo.

Well I have both TP-Link and Raspberry controllers. Never tried raspberry but TP runs CGminer and mines in pool quite fine for a good time.

I browsed this forum and lots of other articles, still i could not find any noob guide how to solo mine.

What do i need? Do i need a running PC or whatever? Im just trying to understand how it works.

THANK YOU and sorry if there are any threads on this which i could not find.

You could run the setup yourself or you could just mine in a Solo Pool. There are a few benefits, some that might even prove to be more profitable to you in the case you do find a block.

You'll get better block propagation if you find it, and also you get a hashrate report and share being submitted, showing you that your miners are working correctly.

I would recommend you check out ck's solo pool.

I am just outside Albany NY, not sure if you travel the 87 much, but I have 8 x s3+, 1 S4 and several S5's. Given shipping costs, maybe pickup is the way to go.

Let me know

Hello, i don't have a car ^_^". I'm tapped out in funds at the moment, but i will be looking to buy more S5's in the future. I may have to remove S3 and maybe S4 from my buying list, i only have 800watts of power free on my power grid for mining, so after that its replacing older gear, and replacing older gear with slightly less older gear is probably not going to be enough.

If the price is right i would buy a working S5 from anywhere. If you have a concrete offer for 1 or 2-3 S5, i'd be interested to hear it, however it will take me a bit of time to replenish my funds.

The next thing i'm picking up will be a single S5 blade, as soon as i can find one at a good price. So i was going to let this thread rest for a bit until i have budget again.

OK, thats fine. I have the hardware listed other places also so lets check back in a while when your ready and I'll see what I have left at that point.

I am now looking to pickup some deal. If you (or anyone else for that matter) have S3's already in Canada, shipping them here might be doable.

Also interested in S4, S4+, S5, S5+. The S5 at least, would probably not be an issue if shipped from the US. Not sure about the shipping cost for an S4, it might not be doable. From outside Canada.

I am close to Ottawa, if local drop off is a possibility.
2434  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: What's the best (cheapest) website to buy bitcoin in Canada on: October 29, 2015, 03:38:11 PM

I've used Coinbase quite a bit more since the last time i mentioned them in this thread. Still no problem, took less than 24 hours to receive money in my bank account both times and the fee was close to 1%, though Coinbase's BTC price is a few % over BTC-e so it was basically free to do the transfer.

I might try buying a bit of BTC with interact this weekend.

Looks like Black Friday may come early this year for us..  Let the "Price War" begin!
As long as it's the least expensive and quietest I will buy it.  My luck that won't be the
trait of just one miner.

I was just discussing that with another user in PM. I think the problem is that Avalon doesn't really go into "Price wars" they seem to instead sell at a certain price and hold it, to recoup their costs.

Its possible that Bitmain will release a S7 lite at a price to undermine the value of the Avalon6, however i am not sure Avalon will try to keep up, since Bitmain would undoubtedly win either way.
2437  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will the Banking Industry kill Bitcoin and keep the Blockchain? on: October 28, 2015, 09:48:57 PM
The banking industry can't do nothing about Bitcoin. Think about it. If Bitcoin "died" (will not happen) then cryptocurrency dies too. Crypto = Bitcoin. It's like that. Everyone associates Bitcoin with cryptocurrency. If Bitcoin fails, the whole crypto industry fails. If Bitcoin does good, the whole crypto industry benefits from it.

How does that have anything to do with the Bank being unable to attack Bitcoin? There are a few ways to kill Bitcoin. They could simply brute force their way by getting a huge amount of PH and then doing "51%" attacks.

And considering the size of Bitcoin right now, it would be pretty cheap compared to the trillions of USD they could lose over time to BTC.

I'm not quite sure if the banks want to ride it out by including BTC in their schemes, but if BTC does succeed, Banks and Governments are going to have a hell of a problem dealing with it, even if they outlaw it or tax the fuck out of it.

Hello,

For the first time i moved now from blockchain.info to some offline wallet bitcoincore.

I have a few questions now,

1) i did encrypt my wallet using some password so itīs safe right?

2) i did a backup but have only 1 file called wallet.dat (is this all i need as backup)

1)If you did not expose the private key before encrypting (Usually safe if you do it offline on a clean computer). Or get your encryption password keylogged. Then yes.

2)Yes. Try restoring it on another computer to get the hang of it.
