2821  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why it's so hard to rank-up? on: October 09, 2022, 09:46:53 AM
I'm still very new here and recently I saw a one line post with 4 merits from 3 different people. And let's be human please and admit that that alone is a major discouraging factor in the forum as getting 4 merits from a one line post and you, after taking out your time, maybe after a stressful day at work to make a post that seemed quality to you, only to see that it has no single appreciation, that most times isn't fair.
If anything, that should encourage you that getting merit ain't that hard and that you don't have to write bloated wall of text in order for someone to see your post as quality/helpful.

and you, after taking out your time, maybe after a stressful day at work to make a post that seemed quality to you, only to see that it has no single appreciation, that most times isn't fair.
Just because you think that your own post is quality or helpful, doesn't mean that others do the same. One of the problems in this forum  is that members regurgitate what's already been said a couple of times before in the same topic, so naturally their chances of getting merit for that are slim to none.

2822  Other / Meta / Re: Report plagiarism (copy/paste) here. Mods: please give temp or permban as needed on: October 09, 2022, 08:22:07 AM
Member LagOutLoud copied gmaxwell's topic word for word, for whatever reason (probably merit fishing). I am copying just a small portion of the text and that should be enough to nuke him since he is a brand new member with this being his first post.

As many are aware, the infamous faketoshi scammer Craig Wright has been on a campaign to use harassment, intimidation, barratry, and fraud to attempt to steal some 1.1M coins that belong to Satoshi and others.

In furtherance of this scheme his company just published code for directing the seizure of third party coins in the BSV blockchain. BSV is a scammy bitcoin knockoff that is proprietary software controlled exclusive by Wright and his agents. Users of BSV are only permitted to run the software he approves so they're able to foist their coin stealing code onto their users which would be impossible for legitimate cryptocurrencies.

2823  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What Happens to Our Bitcoin and Other Assets If We Die? on: October 08, 2022, 08:15:05 PM
Aren't you afraid of adding a second point of failure (for instance from a $5 wrench attack)? You're the first point of failure, and if you make a terrible mistake, you lose your coins and have only yourself to blame. But giving someone else the same access is a huge risk, even if they don't take your coins on purpose.
I think that risk of giving someone else the access heavily depends on the person you choose. In my case I would even say that it is safer with that person than it is with me as he lives in a rural part of country, and is ex-military who is very cautious and security oriented because of the job he did. On the other hand, if you give it to someone that is close to you and who you can trust not to steal from you but is not really cautious and doesn't care about safety, then you are asking for trouble.
2824  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [ANN] Bitcointalk Bitcoin Pumpkin Carving Contest on: October 08, 2022, 07:55:19 PM
Does that most recognized list update still to this day ?
Yeah those BPIP lists are updated constantly.

Anyone else have any suggestions for how to set up the vote ?
As @SFR10 said, you have to limit the voters in some way because if you go with a simple poll, someone will try to abuse it with bunch of brand new accounts. If there is any chance that something can be abused around here, it will be.

My suggestion is to make people vote by simply writing the name of the contestant they think it was the best, limit it to at least Full Member & above and eventually certain amount of merit earned.

These statistics are also not easy to do and take some work. So it is normal to take some time.
And of course, if more important works come up, this one is left behind.
Nah its not that much work (takes me maybe 4-5 hours overall) as majority is done by the others, its more slacking than anything else that stops me from publishing these overviews in a more reasonable time frame.

Today I saved the first images of my monthly roundup!
@rikafip! The slaking competition has officially started...again!
That means I am leading as I haven't started with anything yet. I planned though to spend today's afternoon chilling at my PC, watch some football and at the same time work on the charts but unfortunately wife had different plans (as usual Tongue) how we should spend the day, so it is postponed for tomorrow.
2826  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I helped my dad bought some Bitcoin last night on: October 08, 2022, 03:40:41 PM
He wanted to buy using his credit card, but I rather have him buy through me instead to save fees since I can transfer USDT to his account immediately on Binance without fees and convert it into Bitcoin. So yeah now my dad has some Bitcoin in his Binance account.
Congrats to your dad, its a very good time to buy bitcoin for the first time.

One thing I don't understand though is how come you sent him USDT to Binance so he can buy it from there, instead sending your father bitcoin directly to his own non-custodial wallet. This way he would save some money when he decides to move bitcoin from Binance  (which he should do as soon as possible) and he would learn the proper way to store bitcoin.
2827  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Pumpkin Carving Contest on: October 08, 2022, 07:19:30 AM
Picked up my pumpkins today  Smiley
Damn those are nice looking pumpkins and ideal for carving (from my limited experience with pumpkin carving, shape&look matters a lot). For some reason those type of pumpkins are kinda hard to find in my country as we don't really have tradition of pumpkin carving, but I'll do my best and if I find a couple of suitable ones, I will certainly join.

If my carving skill sucks, I believe I can try some digital drawing.
Imho, since this is bitcoin pumpkin carving contest only submissions with an actual carved pumpkin should count (OP mentioned that you could add drawing to that) otherwise this contest will be drowned in drawings, gifs, animations etc. But lets see what OP has to say about it.
2828  Other / Meta / Re: @Mods - Bitcoin Pumpkin carving contest on: October 08, 2022, 07:09:55 AM
Thanks for the heads up, as I am one of those that don't usually visit collectibles board and would certainly missed the announcement. Since I have some previous experience with bitcoin-themed pumpkin carving and had much fun doing it, I might join the contest (here is the entry that I made a couple of years ago for that 10th anniversary art contest).

Anyway, kudos for the initiative.
2829  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Binance Smart Chain Halted Due To Potential Hack on: October 07, 2022, 09:23:33 PM
All other shitcoin blockchains are not decentralized and they had a bunch of down times, especially solana is known for this, and people still use them  Roll Eyes
I can't believe that I saw some people in this forum praising CZ and Binance for quickly stopping their blockchain...
Thing is that an average crypto "enthusiast" doesn't really care about decentralization, "be your bank" thing & similar stuff, and those people are huge majority. As a matter of fact, I think that people even prefer to have someone over their head who can halt the blockchain and sort similar exploits, which is confirmed by people applauding BSC people how they handled the situation.

Nothing strange when you know that he and his buddies are holding most of the coin supply, and nobody can sell anything when network is not working.
You said it yourself, you saw people applauding how CZ handled the situation, and that's the opinion of vast majority of people so that's another reason why price hasn't moved much. As a matter of fact, in the last 24 hours BTC went down more than BNB (2% vs 0.8%) and that says a lot.

2830  Other / Archival / Re: [BIG LIST] Crypto Debit Cards on: October 07, 2022, 08:45:44 PM
Despite having no administrative or processing fees [FTX Card Benefits], it doesn't seem to offer a cashback reward to its users.
In that case I wish them good luck as they will have a hard time getting people on board. Unless their ATM limits are much higher than of competition, but looking at how it is in US, it doesn't look significantly better. Competition is a good thing though for us customers so the more the merrier.

AFAICS, there's no difference between the two with regard to that matter [I believe the author of that article was referring to how the majority of other providers usually do it].
Then I guess its just some PR bullshit, to make them look better than competition.
2831  Other / Archival / Re: [BIG LIST] Crypto Debit Cards on: October 07, 2022, 03:06:00 PM
As expected, FTX is expanding their business and after US, they plan to release debit card in ~40 countries, focusing this time on Europe, Asia and Latin America. Since I am pretty satisfied with my Binance card and I really don't want to do KYC on another exchange, I think I will skip this one. Will be interesting though to see the perks & fees as they would have to be really good to get people move away from competition.

As mentioned earlier, the debit cards would be launched in about 40 countries. It was noted that both the parties involved were focusing on Latin America, Asia, and Europe. The cards will instantly connect to a user’s FTX crypto account and are already accessible in the United States.

One thing I don't understand from that article is this part : "Unlink other debit cards, this one would allow customers to make purchases without having to move their cryptocurrencies from the exchange". I mean, how is that different from my Binance Visa card as I also don't have to move crypto from exchange. Or I misunderstood that sentence.
2832  Other / Meta / Re: [CHARTS] Brief monthly overview of the local boards activity on: October 07, 2022, 02:44:23 PM
Calm down, it's only the 6th. Until the end of the month there's still a little to go.  Tongue
Thing is, I am so slow when making these overviews that it usually takes me a week or two to finish it. I start strong, but then I get sidetracked with something and eventually forget about it. So its crucial I start early if I want to have it finished in a reasonable time frame.

When this morning I saw @ddmrddmr update, I thought: “ Now, I am officially late with my update. Maybe also Rikafip feels the same way!”.
Since today is the first day I could have published this overview, I still don't think that we are late. Days of me publishing overviews few hours after @DdmrDdmr updated merit dashboard are long gone. Cry

I even really wanted to update my thread after DdmrDdmr updated the merit dashboard data last Friday, but apparently it was the end of the month (September) where I'm sure the data must be incomplete especially about the sender and recipient of merit.
Yep, if you did it last Friday you would miss the merit data for that whole day so its better to wait one more week.
2833  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Binance Smart Chain Hacked For An Estimate Of 100 million dollars on: October 07, 2022, 10:14:08 AM
Then who lost the funds all funds lost by the binance or someone from outside of the Binance? It seems something suspicious. And if loss of funds of users then binance will never take responsibility.
According to Binance, its not that hacker took someone else's money, but instead BSC was exploited and attacker created bunch of BNB out of thin air. Then again, if someone can do that you should ask yourself how much is your BNB actually worth and should you even have any.

I would not be surprised if a rollback or (if that's possible) an alternate chain will be made leaving out the transaction(s) related to the hack.
This is what BSC people said on the matter, no mention of rollback.

What happens next?  There will be on-chain governance votes to determine the following four actions for the common good of BNB:

What to do with the hacked funds, freeze or not to freeze?
Whether to use BNB Auto-Burn to cover the remaining hacked funds, or not?
A Whitehat program for future bugs found, $1M for each significant bug found.
A Bounty for catching hackers, up to 10% of the recovered funds.

The BSC validator voting function for general opinions will be switched on in the next few days via an upgrade of BNB Beacon Chain.
2834  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Crypto lender Celsius mulls possible restructuring amid financial woes on: October 07, 2022, 09:39:51 AM
And that document could be accessed at https://ia601401.us.archive.org/28/items/celsius/celsius.pdf. It has 277M size with total 14532 pages, which means you might have performance problem when opening that PDF file. I only spend few minute, but i saw coin transaction ranging to few cents to almost 1 million USD. I expect analytic company already parse this PDF as additional marketing data.
That list of Celsius users is definitely legit. I checked it earlier today and I managed to find a couple of my friends that I know have money stuck in Celsius. Even though addresses have been redacted, it sucks big time to find yourself on that list and I definitely wouldn't like to be in their spot. And it proves once again dangers of doing KYCs all over the place as you never know who and how its going to be leaked.
2835  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Binance Smart Chain Hacked For An Estimate Of 100 million dollars on: October 07, 2022, 07:29:00 AM
very surprising this happened to the Binance smart chain.
Why surprising? It has happened before to other popular altcoins before, so it was just a matter of time to happen with BSC as well. I just hope people will take it as a warning that BSC is not the best blockchain to keep your money on, but knowing how people tend to have short memory I doubt that will happen and soon this will be forgotten.

but it looks like Binance has also announced that all funds are safe.
Of course they announced the funds are safe, I wouldn't expect them to say anything else.
2836  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Binance Smart Chain Halted Due To Potential Hack on: October 07, 2022, 07:04:05 AM
Don't worry, your funds are SAFU. Cheesy

That part of the CZ tweet about "asking all validators to temporarily suspend BSC" reminded me of the meme that perfectly explains BSC and how decentralized it actually is.

2837  Economy / Economics / Re: The whole tipping culture in western countries is unfair and totally wrong! on: October 06, 2022, 02:30:10 PM
I do agree that people from some western countries are overdoing it (at least compared to us in Europe) and its not fair that some don't get tips (like for example people that work in McDonald's) but to simply put, you gotta be good with the people that bring you food! At least that's how I look at it, but maybe that's because food is very high on my priority list lol and I eat at the restaurant at least few times per week.

Some professions in Western countries have simply attached to them an additional way of earning through tips, so although it is somewhat understandable to me that a man who is in a good mood and celebrating something in a restaurant or cafe rewards the waiter with a tip (because it is not an easy job as some think), when it comes to delivery or barbershops/hairdressing salons, tips don't really fit in there.
Don't know about you, but in 99% of the cases I tip both my barber and delivery guys (extra bonus if weather is shitty), even though I try not to order if weather is bad (like heavy rain).

However, with more and more digital payments, I think that the situation is changing and that tips will slowly become a thing of the past - because if you pay by card, then you pay the exact amount for the service, and the waiter or delivery person will have to accept that times have changed and not expect a tip.
Technology is adapting to that as well and in some apps (for example Wolt) you can simply chose the tip if you are paying with card. Whether delivery guys actually get the tip is another question and for that reason I am always paying with cash so I can be sure that they get the tip.

Maybe it's like that in the country where you live, but here where I live, every delivery person has an official pizzeria/fast food vehicle and a normal salary.
We live in the same country (AFAIK) and both me and all my friends usually tip delivery guys (unless they fuck up which is rare) so I wouldn't say that is uncommon around here, even before Wolt/Glovo and all the other 3rd party services that are popular now.
2838  Other / Meta / Re: [CHARTS] Brief monthly overview of the local boards activity on: October 06, 2022, 02:02:19 PM
Shamm already mentioned one - the lack of good local posts that are under merited.
To be precise, he mentioned lack of threads, not posts so maybe he misunderstood the rules. But let's say for a moment that he meant posts - in that case Philippines board doesn't even need a merit source, which I seriously doubt given their measly merit/post ratio. I mean, even "Off Topic" board has higher 12 month merit/post ratio than them (0.1 vs 0.07).

The applicant might not get a lot of support from the Bitcointalk community or they will get "fake support" by those who haven't even checked the posts in question because many people won't bother translating foreign language posts to check whether or not they deserve merits.
I honestly didn't notice lack of support for local board merit source status as long as applicant is somewhat reputable and active.

Edit: activity in this topic reminded me that I should start work on the monthly overview if I want it to be finished by the end of the month.  Grin
2839  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New to the forum on: October 06, 2022, 10:55:11 AM
Do i get it right saying that a copper membership will enable posting pictures but anyway i need to take part in at least 30 posts? To get the points?
So my next steps are a membership and a proper engagement into discussions?Smiley
While copper membership can give you few perks that are not available for newbie rank, there's no real need to buy one as you can engage in discussions and write posts normally with a regular newbie account. For me personally, it only makes sense to get one if you plan to advertise your business here, or if you plan to offer some services.
2840  Other / Meta / Re: Report plagiarism (copy/paste) here. Mods: please give temp or permban as needed on: October 06, 2022, 10:48:14 AM
Most of the topics posted by that user are actually low-value copy pasted topics,
Yep, I noticed him few days ago and not only that he is making low value topics, he also looks like one of those fake newbies that sole purpose is to leech of this forum. In the end, what to expect from a member whose first post in this forum is altcoin bounty application.

and it is even more strange that he has already managed to collect 12 merits for his contribution to the forum - I have nothing against supporting beginners, but meriting their c/p posts is the wrong way of motivation.
Bar for a merit worthy posts keeps getting lower as number of new users keep decreasing, which leads to this situation where even a shiposter can earn decent amount of merit in a short time.
