1921  Local / Altcoins (Hrvatski) / Re: Altcoin novosti on: March 03, 2023, 04:09:34 PM

1922  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin ATM Deposit Exchange Rate shocks on: March 03, 2023, 10:51:07 AM
Bitcoin depo does usually have fees in the 10% range. BUT as far as I know individual store owners can set their own rates so it may not 100% be on Bitcoin depo.
But can individual store owners set their own bitcoin price as well? I've been using BATM for years, and buying price was if not identical then very close to the market price (give or take few percent) so I am really surprised to see ~25% difference. Is that the standard in the US? Looks more like a trap that you use once and never again and I doubt that's viable business model.

Another question (since you from US): can you get a SIM card without giving your ID? I am asking because OP said it was anonymous, while  I see on bitcoindepot website that they ask for a mobile phone number so in the end buyer might be far from anonymous.
1923  Economy / Economics / Re: The impact of Russian and Ukrain war on world economy on: March 03, 2023, 10:30:55 AM
Under conditions of free trade and an open market, Russia had no chance to develop its own economy, and it is precisely the closing of borders thanks to sanctions that gives Russia a chance to become economically self-sufficient and throw off the suffocating "Parshev's noose" from its neck
We are in 21st century, not 11th and no country can make it on its own and prosper, even if its the size of Russia.

For Russia, the collapse of the USSR in the economic sense was not a tragedy, but a boon. Fool who does not understand this.
Then why Putin keeps crying about it instead of being happy that Russia got rid off dead weight, so now they can finally prosper? Funny thing, even without that dead weight an average Russian lived worse than the citizens of some of the poorest EU countries despite all the natural resources.
1924  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin ATM Deposit Exchange Rate shocks on: March 03, 2023, 09:06:09 AM
If this is how it's normally charged.. then I can't advise anyone to use ATMs to deposit bitcoin but rather buy a Bitcoin crypto card from Walmart shops.
Bitcoin ATM's have higher fees (usually in the range 5-7%, at least over here in Europe), but this is far from normal. You should have done more research of the whole matter before you suggested your cousin to use one of those in order to send you the money.

I've never used Bitcoin ATMs but it's strange if they don't give you information, exchange rate of the trade before you accept to proceed it. It is my thought only. You did those transactions and could you confirm the ATM gave you such info before trade or did not give you such?
I've used various BATM machines over years and each and every one of them mentioned the exchange rate so I am pretty sure it was the case here as well. Problem here might be that OP's cousin that did those transactions probably had no clue about bitcoin market price and cryptocurrencies in general so she had no idea how much she overpaid.

1925  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [Updated] FTX on: March 03, 2023, 07:46:56 AM
If the bullrun would have continued for another two years, who knows how many billions more they would have embezzled.
Yep. If there is any positive thing about all this mess, its that it happened sooner than later because God knows how many more people would lose their money as FTX kept growing due their aggressive marketing, no withdrawal fees and other tactics to attract as many users as possible.

In other news, FTX confirms for the first time that 8.9 billion dollars of users money is missing so if there's anyone still hoping that they will ever see their money back, think again.

A recent report from the Wall Street Journal pointed out that $8.9 billion worth of customer funds have been unaccounted for and therefore missing.

This is the first time the exchange has revealed a number pertaining to the fund deficiency. The exchange has reportedly pinned down around $2.7 billion in customer assets, relative to $11.6 billion of the balance outstanding on customer accounts. The estimated value of FTX’s assets and liabilities is based on asset prices in November 2022, when the firm filed for bankruptcy.

Alameda Research had borrowed around $9.3 billion from customer accounts before bankruptcy. Thus, the current $8.9 billion hole can be attributed to Alameda Research. FTX did not clarify if the funds were borrowed with or without customer consent. According to a financial update filed, FTX’s sister company only had around $475 million in cash in its accounts as of Jan. 31.

Thus, at this stage, it cannot be anticipated how much compensation affected customers would receive, even though the exchange has tracked down $2.7 billion. However, around $1.5 billion of that said amount includes illiquid crypto assets like FTX’s token, FTT
1926  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: investment advice? on: March 02, 2023, 04:36:50 PM
Should I put it in Trust Wallet or Binance?
Those two are some of the last places where you should keep your bitcoin because former is a closed source wallet under Binance control, while latter is exchange where you don't even have control over your own bitcoin. Not your keys, not your coins.

By far the best place to store your bitcoin is your own non-custodial wallet, preferably hardware wallet (Ledger, Trezor) if you can afford it. If not, software wallets  like Electrum will be fine, just make sure to store your seed at a safe place.
1927  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do you buy a hardware wallet from unsupported location on: March 02, 2023, 03:59:43 PM
1. Is it safe to ship the hardware wallet to my cousin in the UK and he will send it back to me in Nigeria or this is a good idea? I read that it's safer to buy from official than going to third-party store,  I don't want something malicious inserted in the hardware wallet,  waiting for my first deposit into the wallet.
I used the same logic when I bought my hardware wallet so instead buying it from a computer store in the city I live I ordered it directly from company but then unfortunatelt that Ledger data leak happened and some of my info went public. So, there are certain risks in doing it either way.

I am sure that we have Nigerian on here...
You obviously didn't know, but you guys recently got your local board so that's also a very good place to ask something specific to Nigerians, like in thia case.
1928  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: America Wants to buy Bitcoin 20% adults own it, while 29% willing to buy! on: March 02, 2023, 03:47:13 PM
If it's a professional survey which, as the op says, accounted for various factors and built up a representative set of the US society, these are great results.
Its a survey paid by Coinbase, so what are the chances that these numbers are actually legit and not skewed into what fits them the most? When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is and some thing can be applied in this case.

I wish if it was true, but I think situation would be different if so many people actually owned bitcoin.

1929  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Invest in Bitcoin by selling wife's jewelry on: March 02, 2023, 03:17:08 PM
As a matter of fact, most celebrities that you see buying and wearing very expensive jewelries, wristwatches etc. consider the jewelries as investments that they can always sell in the future should they need money. That is why they never really see buying original expensive jewelry as a waste of money.
While luxury watches can be a solid investment choice, its not the case with luxury jewelry and in 99.99% of the cases you will end up losing the money. "Problem" with luxury jewelry is that big part of the price is brand itself so when you try to resell it, you won't get even close to original value. Let me give you an example; recently while watching some series, my wife saw one of the actresses wearing a necklace that she liked very much. She googled it ofc and it turns out it costs 15k euro. Out of curiosity she checked a little bit more to see if she can find someone selling used one and she managed to find it for 7k. And that was some store selling it, meaning person who sold it to them got even less.

Selling your wife's Jewelry to invest in bitcoin is a good move before the jewelries are lost to theft.
That's a very bad argument for sale since you can lose bitcoin as well. Considering the fact that OP lost money in both Luna and FTX, I have serious doubts that he is capable of securing bitcoin properly.
1930  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Reason for the existence of Bitcoin? on: March 02, 2023, 10:22:06 AM
I want to know if SATOSHI was having in mind that what he was about creating with forever be in existence? I guess he made it for just himself  and not real for everyone but it later turns out to be viral over the world.
What would be the point of creating an alternative payment system, write whitepaper etc if no one else would use it so of course he didn't make it just for himself. If he did, Bitcoin would be way more centralized while he did what he can to keep it as decentralized as possible.

If you are asking whether he knew that Bitcoin will be such a success, I would guess that he didn't, and neither did the earliest adopters. This is what he said back in 2010

I'm sure that in 20 years there will either be very large transaction volume or no volume
1931  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin as a Mainstream payment method on: March 02, 2023, 09:15:44 AM
What does BTCitcoin needed in order to become a mainstream payment system?
The biggest obstacle I see (beside those that you already mentioned) is volatility, especially for people that are or on the minimum income. But even if bitcoin was more stable, there is another ((much bigger)) problem and that is people, as dealing with bitcoin means that you take responsibility in your own hands, and that's something majority of  people don't like/want. They prefer sense of false security by giving someone else their money so in case they forget pin of their debit card, they can just go to their bank and get another one, while we know that you can't do that with bitcoin.

After all, bitcoin doesn't even have to become mainstream payment option to be useful.
1932  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Withdrawal small amount of BTC from Binance on: March 01, 2023, 03:50:18 PM
From what I understand, OP doesn't want to withdraw bitcoin but instead he wants to cash out into fiat as he said he is "done with crypto" so all the advices about using other cryptocurrencies like Doge that have lower  withdrawal fee won't really help him.

@suprisethe I never used Binance to cash out into fiat so I am not 100% sure, but it makes sense that if you add a couple of bucks more then you should be able to cash out the whole amount but ask yourself is that really worth all that hassle as Binance might ask you to do KYC again (they tend to do that a lot as of lately).
1933  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Invest in Bitcoin by selling wife's jewelry on: March 01, 2023, 12:55:01 PM
It was only necessity that forced me to sell my wife's jewellery.
In 2022 I lost a lot on several investments, most notably $4000 worth of cryptocurrency during the Luna crash and $1500 worth of crypto during the FTX bankruptcy. So right now I don't have enough liquidity in my pocket to invest. So I am forced to sell my wife's hobby jewelry even though it is very difficult.
For me necessities are food/utility bills/rent/medicine etc and not investments in high risk assets but to each his own.

Anyway, I wish you luck and I hope that you explained your wife the risks and not just "easy 10x" part so you don't have issues down the road if for whatever reason bitcoin doesn't perform as we hope/expect it will.
1934  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Invest in Bitcoin by selling wife's jewelry on: March 01, 2023, 10:44:56 AM
First of all, its not a smart thing to share image of your wife's jewelry (some pieces stand out quite a lot) because you never know who is reading this.

Bitcoin will cross $100k after halving in 2024 ie if I invest $3000 in Bitcoin now then there is a chance of getting 10x after 2024. If I get $30000 from investing $3000, nothing can be as valuable as Bitcoin. I explained this formula to my wife at night and she was not willing to give me her jewelery at first but today she told me by herself that you can sell my jewelery and invest in Bitcoin.
There is no guarantee that bitcoin cross $100k in 2024 and if you are saying this to your wife, you are basically lying to her and I don't think that's smart thing either. Did you ever consider scenario in which bitcoin stays at these levels or even go below for the next few years, how you gonna explain this to her?

At present I am forced to sell my wife's jewelery as I have no fiat money
And who exactly is forcing you?

I seek advice from expert investors/holders/users of this forum,,,,
whether selling my wife's jewelery and investing on bitcoins makes sense?
Selling your own jewelry is another thing but asking wife to sell hers doesn't make much sense to me.  Even though I believe that it will worth much more in the future than it is now, bitcoin is still high risk investment and I wouldn't endanger relationship with my wife in case things go south, which is always a possibility.
1935  Other / Meta / Re: Unban request, I was banned for copying my own text on: March 01, 2023, 09:58:27 AM
The logos of "bestchange" were automatically placed by our developers, because in any case, it is planned to be placed in this monitoring. At the moment, we have removed the logos and will place them only after they are included in the monitoring.
Ah, the same old "blame it on developers" excuse that we heard so many time before in the past. But even if it was indeed their fault and they put it there without your approval, you didn't think that its misleading to keep that logo on your website because you simply weren't listed there as of yet?

The fact that someone else had to warn you about that says something.
1936  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Robbery that attacks Bitcoin Holders on: March 01, 2023, 09:12:46 AM
Okay, how do I know that person is a policeman or not? If you don't follow their orders, they'll punish you and if you follow, there is a chance that they are actually criminals.
Use common sense and know your rights. If they knock on your door telling you that they have info your money might be counterfeit and that you have to give them everything that you have asap, you can be pretty sure its bullshit as these things don't work that way. At least not in my country.

In that case, government should pay for every damage that victim has faced by fake policeman because if the government has the problem where some people can get police uniform, guns, police car and move in the streets, definitely this country is not doing well.
You don't need real uniforms, police cars and guns to pretend that you are police. Fake badge is usually enough and that's why these scammers usually target older people who are more gullible, easy to confuse and won't resist or make fuss.
1937  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Robbery that attacks Bitcoin Holders on: March 01, 2023, 07:56:56 AM
It looks like a fake robbery claiming if they were a policeman.
Just because someone wears a police uniform doesn't mean that he is policeman, and just because someone is policeman doesn't mean that he won't rob you. Just the other day a big group of scammers was arrested in Croatia that pretended to be police in order to trick elderly that were their main targets.
1938  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Robbery that attacks Bitcoin Holders on: March 01, 2023, 07:50:11 AM
there is no detailed explanation of how the thief could find out that the tourist has bitcoins
It wasn't a rocket science really as this guy is crypto "entrepeneur" so it was safe to assume that has some crypto. Just another proof how dangerous is to let everyone know that you are into crypto and I am susprised that we are not seeing more $5 dollar wrench attack cases like this.

Then again, he might got what he deserves as he seems like a scammer that got robbed. Karma is a bitch.

Our current hero creates channels and groups where he sells signals for making money on betting, mining, cryptocurrency, offers to buy his courses as ready-made solutions for good earnings, but by contacting Boitsov, people only lose money and nothing more.

Positioning himself as a good financial expert, the young man actively promotes various projects, charges quite expensive for his services and signals, promising a 100% result, but his clients do not get what they want and suffer significant financial losses.

Yury Boytsov cleverly organizes the draining of clients, although through his social networks he beautifully advertises the proposed work schemes, calling them a 100% path to success, but in reality this does not happen.

The scammer, in order to justify his unsuccessful projects, voices non-identical stories of success and development in various interviews, and he is also actively blacklisted and deservedly so. If Yury Boytsov is exposed in relation to the personality, then one can understand that this young swindler sells a dummy as valuable information, earns almost out of the blue, and because of him people go into the red and remain with serious debts.
1939  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Trezor phishing scam is in progress on: March 01, 2023, 07:33:36 AM
Just confused about, how the scammer finds our phone number to send SMS and calls. I just received a call several days ago with I don't understand the language from a strange phone number, but I am really sure that he make the offer for me, and I don't interesting to continue his call.
This leak doesn't have to be from Trezor, as you might have left your phone number somewhere else and they could have leaked it. It can be an exchange or maybe even from that Ledger leak from few years ago. For that reason its a good idea to get virtual phone number (that costs like few dollars) if you want to register on dodgy websites that ask for your phone number.

So how can I block phone number from outside country?
Same as any other phone number, as you have option for that inside your phone call settings.
1940  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is a good wallet I can use to store Bitcoin? on: February 28, 2023, 11:24:06 PM
I don't think you should be asking such a question here, I can see clearly your a beginner but you should have someone who introduced you to this forum and this question isn't relevant enough to create a thread
This forum is the best place to ask such questions so OP did the right thing by coming here and creating a thread.

as a beginner you shouldn't be thinking of buying bitcoin, you should know the in and out of Bitcoin before indulging in Bitcoin activities
I don't think that's true either. You definitely don't have to know everything about bitcoin in order to buy it. Some basics like how to secure store it is enough for start and that's exactly what OP came for here.
.

Because people think the best and safest are hardware wallets. But in reality, when they use a hardware wallet and are still careless, the hardware wallet can be lost and damaged. Hardware wallet security is indeed better than application wallets.
Hardware wallets are the safest option for majority of people (if not for all), but if someone says that he can't afford it at the moment, no point suggesting him that. Then again, I am sure that many think that if they don't have thousands of dollars worth of crypto that it doesn't make sense "wasting" money on HW. I had to learn that lesson the hard way as I bought mine after I lost almost everything  5 years ago.
