2221  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Genesis allegedlly prepares for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on: January 19, 2023, 11:12:17 AM
These are really strange laws!! Companies file bankruptcy to protect themselves!!! Well who protects users then?
Users should protect themselves by not giving custody of their own coins and stop treating centralized crypto platforms as banks because they simply aren't.

Maybe this might wake up some of the people who bleat on about Coinbase or Binance being safe because they are large exchanges. Well, DCG is huge, and currently two of its subsidiaries are on the brink of collapse.
Certain percentage probably removed their money after everything that has happened in the recent period, but majority will just continue business as usual. I know people who lost money on both Celsius and FTX and they still are still staking significant amount of money on Binance, being absolutely sure that Binance is safe and nothing will happen. When I asked them can they be really sure that same thing won't happen with Binance, they told me that even if something happens to Binance, prices will go down so much that it won't matter anyway.  Roll Eyes And those people are not newbies at all.

2222  Local / Hrvatski (Croatian) / Re: SCAM upozorenja Zbirni topic on: January 19, 2023, 08:48:16 AM

Grin

2223  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Probably Account sold (Texac) on: January 19, 2023, 07:39:18 AM
And the posts make me 100% confident about the ownership change as well as spam. Yet waiting for feedback from the community.
If you are 100% sure that account changed hands, then you should act accordingly. Upon checking him a little bit more I do agree that his behavior looks suspicious and posting style seems altered, but I will wait a little bit longer as the more he posts in English, the more obvious change of his posting style will be.
2224  Other / Archival / Re: Mass adoption: Naming my child bitcoin on: January 18, 2023, 09:49:40 PM
I'm from a country where bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are banned by the government and I think naming my child bitcoin will not be such a bad idea as it would help create awareness about bitcoin.
(Lets say for a sake of argument that this topic is not made for merit fishing purpose) Yeah it definitely makes sense to name your child Bitcoin in the country where bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general are banned. I sure hope that there are some restrictions in Nigeria when it comes to child naming since you obviously lack common sense.

You and others are seeing it as a very wrong something because Bitcoin has not made his way through. Assuming Bitcoin is widely accepted by the whole world and also seeing its value very high, will you not agree to name your child Bitcoin?
I am telling you that in the next 10yrs or so if Bitcoin is still in existence and made his way through you will hear many people bearing the name Bitcoin.
And what if in 10 years Bitcoin is still banned in Nigeria and people even start getting persecuted for it, how do you think child life will be? There are so many other way to raise awareness about Bitcoin instead making your child life more complicated than it should be.
2225  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Genesis allegedlly prepares for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on: January 18, 2023, 07:43:16 PM

Isn't Genesis that is preparing for bankruptcy? Genesis is part of Digital Currency Group (DCG) they are not related to Gemini Trust!
There is an active investigation on the two of them over unregistered securities sales but that's a different thing!

You are right, that was brainfart. I wrote Gemini in the title while thinking about Genesis (for some reason I keep confusing those two). Anyway title sorted now, thnx.
2226  Economy / Service Discussion / Genesis allegedlly prepares for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on: January 18, 2023, 07:00:03 PM
Bloomberg just reported that Genesis is preparing to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy so it seems like yet another crypto company might bite the dust. I don't think that anyone is surprised about this developement after everything that has happened lately and are probably not the last one that will go down in the near future. The only question is who will be the next.

Genesis Global Capital is laying the groundwork for a bankruptcy filing as soon as this week, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

The cryptocurrency lending unit of Digital Currency Group has been in confidential negotiations with various creditor groups amid a liquidity crunch. It has warned that it may need to file for bankruptcy if it fails to raise cash, Bloomberg previously reported.

Representatives at Genesis Global Capital didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. A representative for DCG declined to comment. Talks are ongoing and plans could change, the people added.
2227  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Start of a Bull Season on Bitcoin? Or a Trap? on: January 18, 2023, 06:38:10 PM
Have you seen the new price? It dropped hard a few hours ago as a result of some bad news about US law enforcement.
You mean that news about some surveillance program that gives law enforcement access to money transfer without court order? That doesn't seem to me like news that would affect bitcoin price that much. I think its more about small correction after bitcoin price going up 25% in the last 2 weeks that everyone expected.

Regarding whether this is a start of bull season, I don't think that we are out of the woods yet, and its too early to tell anyway. If we keep these levels for some time then we can be more optimistic but I wouldn't celebrate just yet.
2228  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2023 Oscar Awards betting and discussions on: January 18, 2023, 04:08:48 PM
after asking this question we have to see the people who voted and know their psychological background something like the choices and reasons that make these people choose a certain choice because in recent years I have seen each thing more ridiculous than the other being voted on and I am wondering who are the people who are voting?
Here it is, list of 105 members of HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) that are voting for Golden Globe. In short, those are bunch of journalists all over the world and its much different from Oscar as 80% of Academy members are Americans + there's like almost 10k of them.

About the Oscar, I see that odds (I am checking at nicerodds) on Everything Everywhere All At Once keep dropping, probably because they won 5 Critics' Choice Awards and the same thing happening with Brendan Fraser. Voting for nominees ended yesterday so now we have ton wait until 24th for the nominations.
2229  Economy / Economics / Re: Another Boom for the crypto market. on: January 18, 2023, 02:58:10 PM
It is a good news (for Binance) but I doubt that this will have any effect on the crypto market. News like this were big maybe 10 years ago but luckily not anymore. Now its just business as usual and CEX doing as much as they can do to suck up to governments to increase their reach (which is understandable).
2230  Economy / Services / Re: Want Service from Slovenia,Australia People on: January 18, 2023, 11:30:53 AM
Since you don't want "fake people", maybe you should share what is it all about, what are those tasks that people will have to do.
2231  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Probably Account sold (Texac) on: January 18, 2023, 08:09:24 AM
It made me clear it is a bough account and now spamming.
Since majority of his posts are in Russian, it would be good if someone who is a native Russian speaker checks his post history and see if there is significant change in posting style. Another thing, I don't see any change of email address and to me is unlikely that the new owner wouldn't change it as the old one could easily overtake the account.

I personally would like to see more evidence before neg tagging.

2232  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [Updated] FTX on: January 17, 2023, 10:55:06 PM
According to Coindesk, 196/535 members of congress accepted donations from FTX related people. We all knew that SBF was giving money to politicians left and right, but I don't think that anyone thought it would to this extent. Maybe that explains why they behaved like they were invincible.

More than one in three of the 535 senators and representatives in the U.S. Congress showed up to the new session with FTX baggage, having received campaign support from one of the senior executives of the fraud-ridden crypto giant.

CoinDesk has identified 196 members of the new Congress – many of whom were just sworn in last week – who took cash from Sam Bankman-Fried or other senior executives at FTX, a crypto exchange that filed for bankruptcy in Delaware in November after CoinDesk revealed unusually close ties between FTX and Alameda Research, an affiliated hedge fund. The names in Congress range from the heights of both chambers, including new Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), down to a list of recipients new to high-level politics.

2233  Economy / Economics / Re: Russian Gas ban - A problem for Europe or suicide for Russia? on: January 17, 2023, 04:25:33 PM
Well, if you claim their bill was 120eur last year and is 160eur this year I'm calling this claim bs. 160eur bill is only possible perhaps for a one-bedroom apartment in Germany. How big is their house? It's not a sea container sized house?  Grin
You might wanna read my first post again. First of all, those are the wrong numbers that you remembered, and 2nd I also mentioned the house size (they live in Baden-Württemberg state, dunno if there is any difference in gas prices depending on the part of Germany).

2234  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Ravebitc.com legit or not on: January 17, 2023, 12:07:16 PM
How do I know the site is legit? Thanks for any insights!
https://ravebitc.com/
No legit website will ever "give" you bitcoin and then ask you to deposit some of your own in order to unlock it. There is no something as free money just laying around waiting for you to pick it up, as simple as that.
2235  Other / Meta / Re: [CHARTS] Brief monthly overview of the local boards activity on: January 17, 2023, 09:49:16 AM
That's the number of active users throughout 2022, right?
Correct. Same numbers like the ones I shared yesterday but this time members were divided in groups based on the amount of posts they wrote in 2022 to get a little bit clearer picture of the local boards situation.

So does that mean that the overwhelming majority of users who posted throughout the year made less than 10 posts? I was surprised, I wasn't expecting it to be like this.
Yep, and its perfectly normal and expected. Majority of people come to forum looking for help with some problem that they have and when they get an answer, they just disappear while those that get hooked up rare. Its like that on all other forums that I visit so bitcointalk is no different than the others. I also did the same thing on some other forums; registered and then I either worte few posts and never came back, or I visit every once in a while, write a few posts and then disappear again.
2236  Economy / Economics / Re: Russian Gas ban - A problem for Europe or suicide for Russia? on: January 17, 2023, 08:47:43 AM
This is not a scary story that Smack That Ace told us, but still the situation is not very pleasant...
No increase is pleasant, but no need to spread bs while real situation can be easily checked.

I suspect the truth is somewhere in between +800% and +40EUR.  Grin Although +800% is possible in some countries too (I heard Bulgaria had some really drastic energy price rise)
Well, I would like to hear in which Europe countries gas heating for families increased by 800%. We all know that prices increased and its not pleasant at all, but its one thing for price to increase 100% which happened in some countries but completely different to get increased by 800%.

and +40EUR is possible if you use some tricks, like solar panels or a heat pump for example (something about his sister's house the poster was not aware of).
They are not using any "tricks" like solar panels (they do plan to install them as from what I could see a lot of their neighbours have roofs of their houses covered with them) but their house is pretty new (built 4 years ago) so isolation is good which can affect how much you spend on heating (and cooling). Still, even if they lived in an old house I don't think that increase would be nowhere close to 800% like that guy from the screenshot allegedly had.
2237  Other / Meta / Re: [CHARTS] Brief monthly overview of the local boards activity on: January 17, 2023, 08:23:20 AM
As per DdmrDdmr suggestion, here is the overview of the active members per local board, separated in groups by their activity (1-9 posts, 10-99 posts and 100+ posts). Initially I created 5 separate groups (two additional ones were 10-49 and 500+) but it was a total mess and you couldn't really see much. After spending few hours this is the best I could come up with, while keeping it somewhat visually pleasing and in line with rest of the charts.

It would have been much easier if it was only few local boards with not so big difference in terms of numbers, as having 18 boards with a huge difference really makes it harder to create something like this.

@fillippone looking forward seeing your implementation for Italian board.

2238  Economy / Economics / Re: Russian Gas ban - A problem for Europe or suicide for Russia? on: January 17, 2023, 07:53:42 AM
Monthly gas bills increased by 800%, from 81 euros to 651 euros per month. This is the result of EU governments declaring that they have enough gas for this winter and will never need Russian gas again. This is just one of the families in Germany, but I guess this is a well-to-do family that can spend that much money. How will the poor and working class cope with the harsh weather conditions?
Cool story bro. You live in Germany/know someone there or you believe everything you see on the internet?

I spent Christmas holidays in Germany at my sisters place and we talked exactly about the gas price issue. So, they live in a very comfy 170m2 4 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms house and last year they were paying 80 euro per month for gas and this year gas company increased it to 120 euro per month. Just to add that she relatively recently gave birth to a baby so they are keeping house really warm (even too warm for my taste, I walked around the house in a tshirt in the middle of winter) and not trying to save money by freezing their asses off.

Now go check how much an average family makes in Germany and see whether they can handle 40 euro increase per month.
2239  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It is ok to sell your Bitcoin. on: January 16, 2023, 10:24:43 PM
Do people hodl just because others are HODLing?
Some probably do and I do hope more people will follow others in that regard.

Why so people hold rather than sell and buy again when low
Because in order to actually sell high and buy low on the regular basis you have to be a good trader, and majority of people simply aren't. I tried that tactic in the past and while it worked for a couple of times due nothing but luck, in the next few times I tried that I lost big part of the previous profit so I realized that trading is not for me and I sleep much better ever since i switched to hodl mode, not obsessing over price.

What is your major reason for HODLing and how do your survive the bear market?
I suck at trading and I have no time or will to learn it. Regarding how I survive bear market its simple: I don''t have any price tracking apps on phone and I very rarely visit Coingecko/CMC.
2240  Local / Off-topic (Hrvatski) / Re: Kutak za kulturni trenutak (filmovi, serije, knjige etc) on: January 16, 2023, 10:05:15 PM

The Fabelmans

The Banshees of Insiherin

Osim filmova, gledalo se i par serija: dosta dobra humorna drama The White Lotus o dogodovstinama grupe turista i radnika u nekakvom all inclusive fancy resortu. Danas je izasla prva epizoda The Last of Us, serija koju sam dugo cekao (veliki sam fan postapokalipticnog settinga) bazirana na dosta popularnoj istoimenoj igri (koju nisam igrao).
