2301  Other / Meta / Re: What one change would you like to see in bitcointalk in 2023 on: January 08, 2023, 10:53:17 AM
Ofcourse we can get it from their merit counts but if there is another rank with 2500 merits or 5000 merits criteria which will give the recognition for their contribution and also differentiate from 1K members, anyway I don't think theymos is interested in adding ranks but I just expressed what I would like to see.
I sure hope theymos doesn't consider adding more ranks. So many people take this forum way too seriously (just remember those silly self-congratulatory topics that are thankfully not so popular anymore) and adding more ranks will just create extra craziness in that regard.

In my opinion a new topic should be introduced in bitcointalk in 2023 . A basic topic should be introduced for newbies. Who want to increase their rank in bitcointalk. So beginners don't face much trouble and the topic will make newbies basic strong .
Everything needed (for the start) for an average Newbie is already in the pinned messages in Beginners & Help board. Problem is that many totally ignore those which can get them into trouble (mainly not realizing forum's stance of plagiarism).
2302  Other / Meta / Re: Request: New Local Board for Pakistan (Urdu) on: January 08, 2023, 10:06:57 AM
And we are still waiting the management, which will announce or even will explain the criteria to get local board. We hope and wait until we get.
I wouldn't count on getting a specific criteria to get a local board because I don't think that Nigerians got it either, and if you think about it its even better not to have it as it may get abused. The most important thing is to keep being active in both your local topic and your request to get one and eventually you will get your own local board. Just don't get disheartened if it doesn't happen in the next few months because as we noticed, this procedure may take some time.
2303  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2023 Oscar Awards betting and discussions on: January 07, 2023, 05:30:30 PM
I agree that it's basically decided beforehand, and to be fair Hopkins won because Hopkins was better, Boseman was only posed to win because he, unfortunately, passed away, but nobody thought he deserved it that year, without his tragic death, he would not be even discussed at all, some people just assumed Boseman would win because of the situation but that had nothing to do with it and Hopkins won as imagined.
Of course he wouldn't be even close to favorite if he didn't die (probably wouldn't even get nominated) but bookies were so sure in his win that they gave measly ~1.08 (not even worth the bet) while odds on Hopkins winning were ~7. Just because someone was clearly better (like Hopkins was and it was obvious to everyone who watched The Father and that other superhero movie) doesn't mean that it will win an Oscar as history is full of undeserved winners, unfortunately.

2304  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2023 Oscar Awards betting and discussions on: January 07, 2023, 04:58:16 PM
Oscars are not really a wagering thing if you ask me, maybe I am wrong but isn't it basically decided already. Like unless something shocking happens, the fabelsmans should win it, spielberg should get the director and Cate Blanchett for the female and Brandon Fraser for the male. Those four categories are basically locked already and nobody is expecting anything else. Could it be ever possible to get shocked with some different result?
In some categories there are obvious favorites, but big surprises are still possible. Few years ago Chadwick Boseman was a huge favorite (mainly because he died prior the ceremony) but in the end Anthony Hopkins won the award (well deserved win I must add) so I wouldn't say that betting doesn't make sense. After all, there are many categories without a clear favorite which makes it more interesting and worth betting.

So, you could definitely gamble on these four, and will come out in profit unless something very unexpected happens. Oscars are rarely unexpected, people know who will get it.
If you are so sure that its an easy money, wage a bigger amount and let's see how it goes.  Wink Problem is, when you have clear favorites, odds tend to be way too small so sometimes its not even worth it to bet because of bad risk to reward ratio.
2305  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Can you give a clean Chit to Binance after Knowing This... on: January 07, 2023, 04:46:40 PM
Binance has stand the test of time and to let you know, you can not just shake them much as they have a strong base in which they rely on.
Contrary to popular (ignorant) belief, Binance has been around for only 5 years (for some reason people think that they have been around much longer) so its way too early to say that they stand the test of time. If they are still around in 10 years without major hacks/problems then we can talk about it.

Binance has built a niche for itself and so therefore has always  been a threat to others.
And what is that niche, because Binance meddles in almost everything crypto related.

I am not a fan of centralised exchanges but to be frank, CEX has really played a good role in Crypto accessibility in the world and binance which happens to be the biggest CEX has played a major role too.
CEX definitely played their tole in making crypto more popular, but we also shouldn't close our eyes before obvious problems and Dangers of Binance monopoly.

2306  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2023 Oscar Awards betting and discussions on: January 07, 2023, 09:37:39 AM
At least the films are well categorized, so it is a little less difficult to choose the best ones, as the organization already places in each category the best judges who have more affinity and taste for the category they are judging.
Voting is usually direct. The Academy has about 6 to 7 thousand voting members and each one of them can only vote in the area of their specialty.
I just wanna further explain this is true only for nomination process, in which editors nominate editors, cinematographers nominate fellow cinematographers etc. For an actual Oscar awards, all members can vote in all categories, no matter the branches. And yeah, Academy now has more than 10k members.

Obviously, for best film, best actor, and others where it is not possible to have this clear separation, it gets a little more complicated and this is perhaps the reason for so much controversy in which "average" films end up being nominated instead of others that most of the public might consider to be better.
This is true only for the Best Picture in for which every Academy member can nominate its favorite, while only members of actor branch nominate actors for all 4 categories.

All judges organize a ranking of what their favorite movies are, they don't just choose, but several and put their preference from the first to the last.
The film that occupies the first place in more than 50% of the lists is declared the winner, but if none of them manages to be at the top of the rank of at least half of the voters, a system of exclusion of the least voted appears as an alternative tiebreaker.
This is correct, only the Best Picture has preferential voting. Some will say that it is more fair, but I personally don't like this system as it causes the most "agreeable" movie to win instead those that actually take some risk.
2307  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why I dont worry too much about using closed source wallet on: January 07, 2023, 09:05:27 AM
This is just ignorance compared web app like FTX to online wallet they work on different technology.
What matters is that behind both of are people and they can have malicious intent that might cause you lose your money and if we don't lack something in crypto, that's those kind of people.

Problem with a closed-source wallet is that no one outside of the company that made it can check the code, making sure that there are no hidden surprises waiting to be exploited unlike the open source one that are regularly checked by community.

2308  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why I dont worry too much about using closed source wallet on: January 07, 2023, 08:35:29 AM
The reason I dont worry too much of it and dont bother to put there.
Is because the chances of getting hacked by the company or other is extremely low.
Tell that to millions of people that lost money in FTX and Celsius. In the end, why take extra chance for losing your money when there are alternative open-source solutions on the market.

1 company cant empty 10 million wallets so fast.
You think that those kind of things are done manually, one by one in order to give enough time to others to withdraw their money? If company performs exit scam, you probably won't have time to do anything and will only realize when its too late.
2309  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do people store their cryptocurrency on exchanges? on: January 06, 2023, 10:22:05 PM
Okay put 100000 Doge you own on an exchange.

Set 3 sale points

33,333 at 29 cents
33,333 at 49 cents
33,333 at 69 cents

set it and forget it.
How much Doge would you have now if you did that on FTX?  Cheesy

I know some people that are doing exactly that on Binance, and they are not newbies or anything of that sort. Unlike 99% of the people, they fully understand the risk so if Binance goes down they won't blame CZ/US government/whoever but instead only themselves.
2310  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What advice can you give to newbie here? on: January 06, 2023, 10:10:17 PM

Thank you for this! This will help especially the newbies like me. We really make sure that our post is good quality content so that the forum also can grow more effective and efficient to learners about cryptocurrency.
Newbies like you? Buddy, you are a Full Member registered 5 years ago, you are hardly a Newbie. Or maybe you actually wanted to write this with one of your alt accounts but you forgot to switch it?   Grin

@OP others already shared you some good advice, but I would like to add one more: don't pretend to know more than you do as that can get you into trouble (plagiarism=getting banned). Asking the right question can be more valuable to this forum that creating a topic with some generic advice, like many new members do around here.
2311  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [Updated] FTX on: January 06, 2023, 09:33:38 PM
He will be fined and he will be freed. His mother's connections with those politicians in Democtratic party will make certain of this because if he is charged guilty, there are important people in FTX that might also be implicated.
That was my initial thought as well, but after those two pleaded guilty I don't think that there's any chance of him getting away with fine only. I mean, both Caroline Ellison and that Yang guy pleaded guilty for some serious stuff (money laundering conspiracy, wire fraud, securities fraud etc) and probably involved him in all of that.

I don't expect him spending many years in prison either, but I don't think that he will walk away from it as easy as you may think. Don't be so pessimistic.  Wink
2312  Economy / Reputation / Re: Did NicNacCoin account get sold or hack? on: January 06, 2023, 05:48:49 PM
this is completely hacked or bought account (+++)
I don't see much evidence of that tbh.

If there is any offense or mistake due to this account being project related and password change then I apologize to all forum members for that mistake.
There is nothing wrong with either of those things. Password & email change and/or change in posting styles are a common red flags when it comes to account that changed hands or were hacked(which is again not forbidden but highly discouraged), hence this topic.

2313  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Plagiarized Whitepaper - THERMOFINANCE.COM on: January 06, 2023, 05:27:38 PM
They have started the bounty thread again by a new account Gusfall
An amateur hour. They obviously know nothing about this forum thinking that they will avoid getting tagged if they used new account. Anyway, I tagged him and it would be a good idea to flag him as well.
I see that some high ranking accounts joined signature campaign. I guess I'll have to send PMs again, to warn them of the consequen ces of their actions.

edit: flagged him as well in order to warn the newbies joining that campaign https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;flag=3078

2314  Local / Hrvatski (Croatian) / Re: SCAM upozorenja Zbirni topic on: January 06, 2023, 04:10:55 PM

2315  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it advisable to memorize seed phrase? on: January 06, 2023, 09:51:43 AM
I believe we must have seen or heard about fire outbreaks, where buildings are completely erased by fire. Imagine if the owner or occupant of such a building has some Bitcoin assets, and has his/her phone, tablet, laptop and the seed phrase piece of paper in the building and everything was lost to fire.
The way I am dealing with a problem of a a seed phrase being destroyed by fire is that I stored a copy of my seed phrase with another family member who I absolutely trust. Another good way to make sure that seed is not destroyed by fire is metal plate with engraved seed phrase.

Can seed phrase be memorized? It's advisable to memorize seed phrase?
Of course it can be memorized if you put some effort into it, but I would never rely solely on my own memory for something as important as seed phrase. Beside the obvious dangers of simply forgetting about it, there is always a possibility of some head injury/illness that can affect your memory permanently.
2316  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Possible Exit Scam - Advantage Blockchain on: January 06, 2023, 09:34:58 AM
The Team is compiled of contract employees, which I do not believe represent Advantage, as they are not full time employees so they are not public for their safety.
Who then exactly represents Advantage? Since you claim to be a registered company in Canada, why not revealing who exactly is behind your company, your previous experience and competence? And please don't use "satoshi was also anonymous" argument since he didn't ask anyone to invest anything, unlike many similar business that ask people to invest money while wanting to stay anon and then use that ridiculous excuse.

2. Discord was raided by 'shillers' looking for Work. As stated before the goal is to help so many stuck around as I replied to most of them with helpful suggestions or paid them for various services to help.
This would make sense if you got few dozens new users, but getting 400 members in a few days looking for work is far fetched.
2317  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2023 Oscar Awards betting and discussions on: January 06, 2023, 09:13:02 AM
I am not quite certain why Ke Huy Wuan is the very big favorite. I speculate this will change after the Golden Globe awards and the official announcement for nominations.
Looking at those odds, I don't understand either. At the moment, it is a bad bad and for me personally at least two actors were better in their roles (Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan for Banshees a The only thing I can think of why everyone is pushing "Everything Everywhere All at Once" is because it has certain amount of wokeness, and we know that Academia loves these kind of things. Anyway, 1.36 on him is not worth the risk, looks like this year I will go for surprises and not the favorites.

Kerry Condon - The Banshees of Inisherin Wins - 2.50
This wouldn't be a bad bet imho, she did a good job there.
2318  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do people store their cryptocurrency on exchanges? on: January 06, 2023, 08:47:39 AM
I am in the process of purchasing a Ledger Nano offline wallet and it got me thinking about why people store their digital assets on crypto exchanges.
Some to get measly return via staking, some simply due ignorance, thinking that exchanges are sort of banks and that they funds are "safu", some are simply too afraid to hold their own coins and would rather put that responsibility in someone else's hands. Neither of these reasons make any sense, but that's people.

What would happen if Binance got hacked tomorrow and lost the majority of its cryptocurrency? Would they be able to reimburse customers or would they become insolvent?
Since their "safu" fund is allegedly 1 billion and Binance is in control of tens of billions of dollars, you can imagine what would happen and whether they would be able to reimburse everyone.

I asked my close group of friends how many store their assets on exchanges and only 1 out of 6 uses an offline wallet.
In the early days bitcoin attracted mostly people who were heavily into privacy, freedom, believed in "be your own bank" thing, but majority of bitcoiners nowadays don't really care about any of those things exepct numbers going up, so this example of yours doesn't surprise me one bit.

They store because they want higher exchange rates in future.
And how exactly you get "higher exchange rates" by storing your crypto on the exchange? Exchanges are for trading (exchanging) currencies, not for storing.
2319  Other / Meta / Re: Report plagiarism (copy/paste) here. Mods: please give temp or permban as needed on: January 05, 2023, 10:03:55 PM
For example, in six minutes he/she managed to write five posts in totally different topics, and that is really an ''amazingly'' fast result.
Well, if you wrote 38 (out of which 12 were new topics) posts today like he did, you also would have to be very fast and not waste your time to actually think about the answer Cheesy

This guy has been pooping all over the forum for the last couple of days, I think that he could use a temporary ban to chill.
2320  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 25th Seed Phrase on: January 05, 2023, 05:33:47 PM
Also there are some DEX that let user buy and sell bitcoin for fiat P2P like Bisq. I believe a 200BTC can be easily cash out nowadays due to the P2P offered by DEX.
Given the Bisq low volume, it would take you a long time to cash out 200 bitcoin that way. But I agree, cashing out 200 bitcoin at this day and age is not that hard if you know where to look, and people that managed to hack him are surely not some noobs.

years back first generation hardware wallets were just USB devices that when plugged in, opened a webbrowser with the interface being a webpage(facepalm) . so soo soo many flaws back then
Oh damn, I had no idea that it used to be like that in the early days. Just a thought of typing my seed into some web browser app or whatever it was makes me very uncomfortable. I got my Ledger Nano S back in the late 2017 (after I lost almost everything I had) and wouldn't go back on any other type of cold storage.

although has this been the first time he lost large amounts of Bitcoin?
My guess is yes, because if he was hacked before, he would be way more careful than he was. Btw not saying that he was careless, but he would probably be extra careful it it has already happened in the past.
