Hello suchmoon, its this the total number of merits given to OP? or in the whole thread?, just a bit confusing in my part because I don't have this kind of extension.

It shows the sum of all Merit points awarded to all posts within a given thread. Here's the BPIP extension thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5224821.0
482  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: How can we make more people use Bitcoin? on: December 12, 2020, 08:45:49 AM
If you want to increase Bitcoin's users base, start with educating who could benefit from it the most, i.e. people living in countries with high inflation, capital controls or those in need of better tools for regulatory arbitrage or tax footprint minimization.
483  Other / Meta / Re: How to hide boring topics? on: December 12, 2020, 06:59:24 AM
Ignore the worst offenders or, not quite what you're looking for, but you could start using the watchlist if you haven't already. Junk posts in Serious discussion/Ivory Tower should be deleted more often if you report them than in other sections.
484  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are there governments that are utilizing the technology of Blockchain & Bitcoin? on: December 11, 2020, 11:59:10 PM
Most of the time it's going to be 'blockchain' or similar tools that a government has decided to use, not really Bitcoin itself, unless unofficially, e.g. to evade sanctions and the like. It's more common for public universities to be involved in some way and then it's usually going to be academic research into Bitcoin/blockchain/DLTs rather than using it for themselves.

It's hard to find many governments at higher levels actually deciding to put blockchain/DLTs into use (not just small trial runs), R3 has a link suggesting they have at least two government customers:

https://www.r3.com/customers/govtech/

But I couldn't anything similar (governments being clients) on the site of their main competitor, Hyperledger.

The reasons are obvious, there's accountability involved when spending public money, bureaucratic inertia, and most blockchain solutions are solutions searching for problems to solve. More focus when selling DLT tech could be given to scenarios where blockchains make the most sense, i.e. where different participants don't trust one another, anything involving international trade, relations, etc.

According to a Consensys link above we'll probably see more use in the coming future.

edit: Exonym (BitFury's product) has three gov stories on their website: https://exonum.com/stories/index

The one with Georgia's land registry using blockchains seems like it's one of the major government users of blockchains.

486  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcoin betting on the 2020 US Presidential Election | Trump vs Biden on: December 11, 2020, 08:58:01 PM
It's no skin off of my nose when the bookies payout on the POTUS wager, but I'm wondering if there was any disclaimers made by any of the gambling sites to say they wouldn't payout until the 20th of January which is when it looks like some sites are wait for to ensure they get their payouts right.

Most of them are covered by their Terms of Service or FAQ stating they have the final say or something similar. As long as they don't stall with paying out past the inauguration date no one is going to reasonably say that they're scamming.

(and do these sites assert they have funds on hand to actually pay out the wagers one way or the other?)??

Sites where only players bet among themselves shouldn't have any issues paying out.
487  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcoin betting on the 2020 US Presidential Election | Trump vs Biden on: December 10, 2020, 05:30:27 AM
I believe that none of the gambling sites have any solid reason to delay the payment, after December 14.

At BetMoose, for example, they have paid out some and withheld payments for other bets, in some cases even extending the outcome determination date until January 7th, it depends on the bet's stated decision logic. While annoying, in the eyes of a business it's probably better to annoy some bettors rather than risk that one in a million chance of Trump somehow 'winning', especially with how much money there is on some propositions.

Otwórz link z wywiadami, kliknij 'all' i Ctrl + F najczęściej powtarzające się nicki z wątku głosowania.
489  Economy / Reputation / Re: (Discussion) Best Bitcointalk Interview on: December 10, 2020, 02:44:57 AM
Sounds good and I would have supported the idea at the start of the contest.
But changing the rules in the middle of the contest may not be OK for all the participants or for the sponsor, so a discussion with them (sponsor and the current top5?) may be needed before the idea gets more traction.
Else it could get confusing.

Yes, at this point it's probably too late, I wish I had found about this thread earlier, maybe it would have been received differently. On the other hand more than half the time allotted to place a vote has already passed and the number of votes hasn't even reached half the number of published interviews, so that could be a good argument with restarting or extending the vote. Eh, either way, it's still a cool initiative.

To think of it, maybe the voting topic would be seeing more views if it was in Meta? Although with the monetary rewards it's where it should be.

And my thoughts on this vote and how it could be improved (reply there if you disagree with me):

491  Economy / Reputation / Re: (Discussion) Best Bitcointalk Interview on: December 06, 2020, 11:33:39 PM
Since there's more than one person who can win anything, I would have preferred to have some sort of ranked or even cardinal voting. There are more interesting interviews than just one, but looking at this thread so far, there's going to be a pretty big gap in terms of votes between individual places. There might even be multiple users taking the 3rd place.
492  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: FOR NEWBIES, wallets to choose from and analysis by Veriphi on: December 06, 2020, 08:07:43 PM
Do you have any recommendations for where to get help with 3rd party wallet issues, such as when Bitcoinwallet.com holds your bitcoin hostage and refuses to approve the KYC (Know Your Customer) verification process after providing accurate information and high resolution images of ID? I would like to file a complaint if they do not approve me this fourth time. I am really starting to think they are just holding my bitcoin hostage because they know I am trying to transfer it out of their possession.

Post on reddit, twitter and related channels hoping they notice but it's the first time I'm hearing of this custodial wallet so it might be a scam.
493  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do you cover your paperwallet? on: December 05, 2020, 08:22:03 AM
I don't really see the point of a physical copy. It's vulnerable and a hassle to store. You can store the same information properly encrypted on multiple micro SD cards. No one will ever know what's on there and they're much smaller. Just make sure you have plenty of them as they're not very durable.

Steel is pretty resilient, typical house fires don't reach temperatures high enough to melt steel (~1400 deg. C).  I'd be a little concerned with relying on only one type of medium as a BTC wallet backup, especially one of questionable data permanence.
494  Other / Meta / Re: Forum advertising DeFi totally-not-scams on: December 05, 2020, 03:08:40 AM
Really!  What is the criteria to see that option?   I've always been able to see it, but I like new sites to scam bust.  Smiley

Users with the following ranks can disable ads: Hero Member, Legendary, Donator, VIP, as well as moderators.

edit: this info is also provided in each ad slot auction thread:

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Nine of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post. Hero/Legendary members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators have the ability to disable ads; these people don't increase the impression stats for your ads.
495  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2020-12-03 BusinessInsider.com - Shark Tank investo Bitcoin needs ETF, volatile on: December 05, 2020, 02:56:37 AM
This is already a classic and shabby story about someone who doesn't really believe in crypto, but if there was an instrument that would allow him to buy in the morning and sell in the evening without any worries about fees, transactions and security - then crypto would be very interesting asset. But that's the way big investors think, they don't necessarily understand or love something they make a profit on, but they want that investment to have a very easy entry and exit point.

That's true for most people who got involved with Bitcoin in the past 7-8 years.

The proof in favor of this is precisely in the fact that O'Leary talks about "the top 7 cryptocurrencies" because that way the profit would be much higher than if only BTC was traded. So there is no doubt that they want to invest, but they need something like an ETF and even more regulation, and it is only a matter of time before that happens.

Only during a major bull run and if you get lucky picking the right altcoins. Most of the time it's better to just stick to BTC, especially if one doesn't have the time or energy to follow what's going on with altcoins.

It is interesting to read (if you haven't already) what Andreas Antonopolous and our admin theymos think of the BTC ETF.

I remember that thread and can see that I've upvoted some comments there, but the video is down.
496  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: December 04, 2020, 11:58:58 PM
ive been moving 2-5 bitcoins a day, everyday, minus obviously a few days off for holidays and shit for almost 3 years, have been using chipmixer for about last 9 months with that daily volume so I know. it wasn't a "theory" perse it was more of a demonstration of how any narrative can be created as a response to chipmixer for asking why, I was purely responding to him specifically, that any narrative can be formed.

kcool thx, again I'm never using them, but you guys can feel free to. any other good ways to mix coins now that I can't trust them to use them?

Are you sure there isn't any malware on your device(s) that you used for interacting with chipmixer.com? Moving hundreds of bitcoins per year it's possible that you could also have been targeted.
497  Other / Meta / Re: Forum advertising DeFi totally-not-scams on: December 04, 2020, 11:56:32 PM
The link ("Advertise here") is right there under the banner, which is a logical place for it. So one click away if you're already in a thread, or two clicks if you're on the main page and need to click a thread first.

Not straightforward enough if I keep getting inquiries about advertising.

But whether the forum could use more banners is another story... I would imagine more users would start using the "Disable ads" option so it might defeat the purpose.

Most users don't have that option and it could always be taken away.

I think people would miss that one as well. The reason I suggest top is it's far more prominent at the top and will probably be the first thing you see. Theymos seems to be fairly against more advertising though, but I think a banner ad at the top would be less intrusive or annoying than signatures which the forum receives nothing monetarily from.

That's exactly why I suggested a banner at the bottom of the page. I don't think signatures are going away seeing theymos' past posts on this topic.

Yeah, same. Auctions is probably one of the last places someone would go to. I know a few of us have received requests to buy sticked threads/promoted posts as well.

Yes, I get that too equally often.

EDIT: two minutes after making this post and I get a message about paid topic pinning.  Cheesy
498  Other / Meta / Re: Forum advertising DeFi totally-not-scams on: December 04, 2020, 03:35:12 AM
I'm sure you can find someone on staff who would be willing to verify adverts. As I've said before, I don't think we should get rid of as slots completely. At the worst measure you could just refuse bids from any companies that you're possibly unsure of or are even remotely questionable, but this would still seem extreme to me.

With how most cryptocurrency investments and investment vehicles work, the most a Staff member can do is make sure someone won't succeed in buying an ad for a blatant scam. Pretty much everything falls under the 'remotely questionable' label at the very least.

I still think you should consider putting a more prominent banner advert at the top of a couple of the more popular sub boards, especially the Gambling Section. It's seemingly mostly gambling sites that bid on the auctions anyway and it's usually from reputable casinos so there's not much issue with them. I'm sure that banner would attract a premium price as many casinos seem to quite obviously want to target their audience there (and we see this with their signature campaigns where they often require x amount if posts in the gambling section or pay more for ones in there). You could even maybe sell it for a fixed price or issue them for longer periods of time like monthly, quarterly or bi-annually or something so you didn't have to waste too much time on them.

Yeah, the forum is definitely under-monetized; wouldn't hurt to have at least a single banner at the bottom of a page, feels less intrusive than at the top.

A lot of the time the ad slots do go for quite cheap, but the slot isn't very prominent in my opinion, hence why most probably prefer signature campaigns. I've actually even had numerous people over the years enquire why we don't have ads. They probably just blend in as another signature to most.

I've had numerous people ask me how to advertise on bitcointalk at all in the first place. Four clicks are required before a user finds themselves on the topic of the current ad slot auction, and that's if they know where to look in the first place.

You forgot to add a link to the article: https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/news/shark-tank-investor-kevin-oleary-says-he-would-buy-a-crypto-etf-2020-12-1029859503

I wonder which other six cryptocurrencies he has in mind. Not so eay to come up with that many non-scams.
500  Economy / Reputation / Re: Cheating translator and incompetent manager on: December 04, 2020, 02:16:21 AM
Back in 2015, automated translations were nothing like they are now, and text translated by these tools alone, with no human intervention, often rendered a poor result, which may have been both unintelligible, and misleading with regards to the original content intent.
Fast forwarding to end of 2020, I personally find Google Translate to be pretty accurate (with obvious counter-examples we can all easily draw up), to the point that it is likely better than an average person who wants to translate a text, and possibly not up to the standards of a professional translator (although they may find aid in such tools as an initial baseline).

It depends on the languages that are translated, most translations look decidedly better than five years ago, especially from English and into English when major European languages are involved, but the mistranslations when they appear, and appear they will, can still be jarring, the more 'exotic' a language from an Anglophone perspective, the worse it gets.

The way to be sure that it's an automatic translation is with the technical terms. Translation tools are not yet efficient for this.
The example that makes me laugh the most and the most edifying is for the 'mining pools' that Google translates as 'mining swimming pools' in french. Here, I am sure that the translator hasn't understood anything of what he has translated, so I delete it.

Same with Polish. Some things are easier to translate, some are more difficult, but parts related to mining, mining pools, staking or wallets are where it's often the easiest to spot the spammer.
