4801  Other / Meta / Re: Widget with current crypto prices embedded in the forum? on: January 07, 2020, 12:59:13 PM
I just closed a tab that I opened to check the price of bitcoin and it was not a hassle at all. There are so many projects which are in the works and this is not a necessity.

Also, people are on the forum for different reasons, and some may not be interested in the market prices of cryptocurrency at a certain time but want to join discussions on the forum.
If this is ever to be implemented, I would suggest it is limited to the (bitcoin) speculation board for bitcoin prices and (altcoin) speculation board for altcoin prices.
4802  Other / Meta / Re: From reading your old posts how have you changed since arriving here? on: January 06, 2020, 08:06:10 PM
I would also say I've been fairly consistent looking at my previous posts. I had already developed an objective and a posting guideline. My interests may have changed a little over time, but it doesn't reflect much in my posting habit.

have wound up frosty and elitist.
It's much too early to decide whether I'll develop this mindset as well. Maybe I'll check back in a couple of years.
4803  Economy / Economics / Re: Blockchain Usage In Mainstream Examples on: January 06, 2020, 06:48:21 PM
I've also been quite interested in the development of a project called RAPID, or Real-Time Application for Portable Interactive Devices, by Booz Allen and the FDA, which is designed to be used during pandemics and other public health emergencies to improve data sharing between hospitals.

This looks very interesting, and I'm going off thinking about its possible applications in my countries health care system. I used to keep my eye on a couple of projects, but these were all ICOs and the emphasis was more on profit, so a couple of them have fizzled out while the rest are yet to take off.

I was also looking into the possible applications of the blockchain technology into (real-time) advertising, can not recall the websites now, also not sure if the projects are still active. Would update this reply when I do some research.
4804  Other / Meta / Re: Does this tread really deserve the attention it has got? on: January 06, 2020, 06:14:39 PM
Smerits distribution can be debated on but it is not really an issue the forum wants for focus on (from a couple of replies theymos has given regarding the issue) except the user is a source.
If every 'weird' transaction is to be scrutinized it could discourage some from sending them out to avoid getting backlash for it.

I tend to be stringent with my merit distribution, cause I usually only have a few merits on my hands and like to keep a few till I can earn some more, but I see nothing wrong in giving a huge chunk at a time, as far as it's not a trade, in which case the user(s) would run out very quickly, as the redistribution can only go a few cycles. And while clear cases of merit abuse might not get you a red trust as it's impossible to prove, it could get you on the ignore list of a couple of sources, further reducing their chances of ranking up further.

In my opinion, it's a system that regulates itself.

...P.S. OP, I think you need to fix this:
Maybe it's a local slang but I can't remember ever seeing it before...
Thanks for pointing that out LTU_btc, I already updated the OP.
@Pmalek, it was an error, but a couple of errors on bitcointalk has been turned to community slangs, maybe we could add it.

OP totally forgot about Flags...
I can confirm that I didn't forget about trust flags, I created a guiding thread in it a few days after it's implementation; here - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5156835.msg51544945#msg51544945
However, it's a new system I was particular about the trust feedbacks which has been in place for a number of years and needs to be reviewed periodically as much can change over that time.

4808  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: January 04, 2020, 05:30:20 PM
Should we call them a super ultra invincible liverpool?
They are living in the dream!
If they can, they would have earned the title of best premier league team of all time, and would be in of the best ever sides in the world.

So many FA cup fixtures already played today, EPL sides Burnley and Norwich won the the same score line (4: 2). The Manchester clubs would be in action very soon, it looks to be an easy fix urge for City who nonetheless names a very strong side.
Wolves welcome the Red devils. Man Utd are desperate to win a trophy this season and the domestic cups are their best bets. I predict a draw, would probably place a bet for both teams to score.
4809  Economy / Economics / Re: What is safe asset? And If USA dollar weakining what is Next Fiat? on: January 04, 2020, 01:58:40 PM
Hard to say but maybe a portfolio that includes the US dollar, Euro, gold, silver, Bitcoin, and mutual funds. Plus a few other altcoins. I think the wisest thing to do is diversify.
As a possible global currency which can be used by the majority of nations I did not see any of the commodity currencies or digital currencies you listed being an option.
Bitcoin could be used as a global reserve currency but not in the nearest future and no nation would trust their reserves on any current alternative currency.

The Chinese Yen should surely be included in your portfolio as they boost of one of the strongest economies in the world. Gold is a good alternative now, but not for the long term, in my opinion
4810  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: when search engine ok? on: January 04, 2020, 06:52:40 AM
I don't know why it is not functioning these past few days but here's an alternative.
Theymos responded to a similar inquiry some days ago with a general reply:
The index is being rebuilt. It's taking a little longer than I remembered from last year: it might actually be tomorrow or the next day before it's done...
The process is most certainly still being worked on as it's still down, so, for now, the forum Google search option is the alternative (it's actually my most preferred of the two options). Probable check back at the end of today.
4811  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Gap between two posts on: January 03, 2020, 08:33:39 PM
You do not get banned or red-tagged for posting quickly. Different account ranks have posting limitations set by the forum automatically, and you can't post faster than your specific rank permission. The higher your forum rank the lower the posting waiting time.

This feature was added to reduce spamming, AFAIK, cool down time also exists in making reports, meriting posts and also making searches. You can't run around the feature, just follow ethical rules of posting and engage constructively.
4812  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: January 03, 2020, 03:45:13 PM
if they stopped by Manchester city later in April then Liverpool can only tie the arsenal invincible record.

Arsenal was tagged 'invincibles' not just cause they went 49 games without losing a match, but because they 'won a league title' without losing a match. Liverpool can equal the record but would have to win a league title undefeated to have an invincible season. They are more than capable of doing it, although, I do not think it's going to happen for a couple of reasons;

They are the defending UCL champions and are likely to go far in the competition, possibly all the way to the final, with the points gap between them and the chasing pack they are likely to win the title before the final day of the season. In the event that this happens, they will prioritize having a fresh squad for UCL games over going unbeaten all season, hence resting a number of key players. If they do go invincible all season, that would be quite an impressive feat in the modern game.
4813  Economy / Economics / Re: Say Goodbye to Banking as We Know It on: January 02, 2020, 06:49:54 PM
In my opinion Bitcoin would always have an edge over this Chinese digital currency, and any other currency which is going to be launched. Apart from it's decentralization, Bitcoin is also borderless, hence, I can transfer money from anywhere in my country to anyone in the world and at anytime. If different countries create their own blockchain, which would take a while, it would take a longer while to connect the entire nations through a general (centralized) currency,
Also, fiat currencies can be digitalized, but that doesn't make it a 'crypto' currency, it doesn't offer anonymity and would just be another form of mobile banking.

On this news: It would not have much effect on the global cryptocurrency economy, as it's merely speculation at this point.

4815  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread (EPL) on: January 01, 2020, 06:46:53 AM
let's see who the winner tonight, [my prediction]

- Brighton & Hove Albion vs Chelsea > chelsea
- Burnley vs Aston Villa > Burnley
- Newcastle United vs Leicester City > Leicester
 - Southampton vs Tottenham Hotspur > Southampton
- Watford vs Wolverhampton Wanderers > Watford
- Manchester City vs Everton > MU
- Norwich City vs Cyrstal Palace > Norwich
- West Ham United vs Bournemouth > West ham

I will go with both teams to score in the Brighton-Chelsea fixture, in not very confident in a Chelsea victory, wouldn't be surprised if they drew or lost. I more or less agree with all the other bets, except the West Ham prediction. Moyes would be managing West Ham for the first time since his recent appointment, and there's lots of work to be done to revive the team. Under Manuel Pellegrini, they picked up an average of one point per game, and that's regulation standard. I go with a draw.

You left out the final fixture of the day, Arsenal vs Manchester United. Arsenal has one of the worst runs against the top six and Man U is on the opposite end of the stick, they seem to come alive against top oppositions. It would be interesting how Arteta approaches the game after the sit back tactic failed against Chelsea.
4816  Other / Meta / Re: What effect would this forum vanishing have on your life? on: December 31, 2019, 11:48:36 PM
Firstly, I would have a lot of free time drop on my laps and would probably struggle to fill that initially. As an example, I have not been very active during the festive season and I sometimes feel the urge to check in on the forum.

If the forum does vanish, I would pay more attention to my blog and probably, take up one or two more online courses as I'll have to time to. However, it would not be the same without bitcointalk.org, It would be a pain looking up price speculations through Reddit or some other medium.

Another perspective I just thought of is; what would be the state of the forum be if bitcoin disappeared, i.e, became valueless? Of course, these would be a mass exit, but if you do stay what would you do here?

Thanks for the corrections, I was trying to keep it as simple as possible but used the wrong words in some instances. Op edited.

I guess you must do some works in the thread. BOLD the sub-heading

4818  Other / Beginners & Help / Seed phrases, Private/Public keys, xpriv and xpub on: December 30, 2019, 11:00:34 PM
I made a thread recently How best to secure your Private Keys and/or Seed phrase and in it I briefly discussed; private keys, public keys and master public keys. Turned out I had so many misconceptions about these concepts  I did a little research to try and correct some of those misconceptions.

The concepts include:
1) Seed Phrase
2) Private Keys
3) Master Private Keys
4) Public keys
5) Master Public Keys

Introduction:
All of the above theories are related to wallets and asset security. They are also interdependent in specific wallet types like HD Wallets

- Seed Phrases: This is also commonly called; recovery phrase, recovery seed, mnemonic phrase etcetera. A Seed phrase is a collection of 12, 18, 24 words that are used to back up a wallet address. The words are generated using BIP 39 standard from a collection of 2048 words.
A degree of randomness (entropy) is used to secure the phrase and it approximately has the same strength as a private key. * this applies to a 12 word seed phrase: 2048^12 = 2^132 and the phrase would have 132 bits of security, but as the words are not entirely randomly chosen it's actual security level is 128 bits, corresponding to private key level. Any higher number of word combination has a higher level of security.

Code:
          red yellow green purple orange
Indigo violet brown pink grey white blue
A seed phrase can be used to generate all the key pairs of a deterministic wallet and can be used to recover a wallet software in case of loss.

- The words used in a seed phrase can be accurately identified from the first four letters of the word,

"The wordlist can contain native characters, but they must be encoded in UTF-8 using Normalization Form Compatibility Decomposition (NFKD)"

Master extended private key/public key: This can be represented by the acronym; xpriv and xpub respectively. They can be derived from the seed phrase, however, they do not serve the same purpose. A master extended private key is used it generates multiple private keys, however, it can not be used to sign an address. Xpriv is also used to generate the xpub (master extended private key), which in turn generates all the public addresses in the bitcoin wallet. It is used (on its own) to create a "watch only" however, it can not be used to send bitcoin from a wallet. Combined with anyone's private key of an address, it can be used to generate all the other private keys of all related public addresses.

Private keys: This is a 256-bit number, it is a collection of alphanumeric characters *depending on the encoding. They are used to spend bitcoins in a wallet and also to sign a transaction. They are generated from the xpriv and in turn used to derive the public keys. This process can not, however, be reversed, i.e, public keys can not generate the private keys.
- Private keys should never be shared with anyone.
- They should be kept in a secured place and safely backed up.

Public keys: This is derived from the private keys multiplied by the curve generator. The sequence can not be reverse engineered, i.e, public keys cannot be used to generate private keys. It is used only for receiving funds and is displayed publicly whenever a transaction is made

As mentioned earlier all these features of an HD wallet are connected, this is the hierarchical system
*Seed phrase can generate the xpriv and all other key pairs of the wallet
*The Master extended private key can generate all private keys
*The Master extended public key can generate all public keys. Xpub + any private key (nP) can be used to generate all private keys of the other addresses.
*The private key generates the public key associated with it. 1 private key = 1 public key
*The public key can not be reversed to derive the private key. It is kept public and hence the algorithm does not support it generating any key/phrase to ensure security.
4819  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: electrum - watch only - how to use? on: December 30, 2019, 10:29:29 PM
...

A watch-only wallet uses only the xpub (master extended public key) which only controls the public keys of that address. This is used only to receive bitcoins, the private keys are the requirements to send.

Why does a 'watch only' wallet not disable receiving bitcoins? In this case, the wallet does not technically exist, the blockchain only recognizes transactions and not wallets, so unless a wallet can be involved in a transaction it can not be registered on the blockchain. As mentioned earlier, it's used so you can not 'spend from that particular address, so there's no need to disable receiving funds
