501  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PoS vs Pow on: March 28, 2015, 04:12:19 AM
Neither, PoS in its current state needs more work and PoW is just a waste of resources.
I suspect we will see an evolution of one or both soon (tm)....

What are the areas in POS that need more work?

Almost like they're coming from all sides now, huh Daedelus?

Stay the course: "no comment".

I'm sorry, I don't follow.
502  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitshares is DEAD on: March 27, 2015, 12:37:15 AM
Our new marketing advisors have started to emphasize more testing of ads and A/B comparisons to learn what people like and don't like about our promotional materials.

I have heard enough over the past year to not take your statement at face value. If I started making a list of the overpromises and non-delivery, it would make for an utterly depressing read.

For our own sake I hope you're not bluffing this time.

It took me two conversations with Stan to realise this, so a year rly!  Glutton for punishment  Cheesy nah, it's cool though. I have a video you can play in the background that makes Stans posts really entertaining. Just let me know.
503  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Coinbase CEO: bitcoin is far ahead! Altcoins are distractions! on: March 26, 2015, 03:25:29 PM
You speak as though technical advancement has no benefit.

Are those guys who work to make engines more efficient or develop new drugs with fewer side effects than existing ones or build taller buildings safer using less materials "technical purists"?

No crypto is perfect. But standing still isn't the solution.
504  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Coinbase CEO: bitcoin is far ahead! Altcoins are distractions! on: March 26, 2015, 02:23:48 PM
Altcoins are basically useless except for demonstrating/testing out new ideas or perhaps as a fork if Bitcoin got too corrupted.
at this moment, the only use any altcoin out there has is just to put money in a few people's pockets. if you see the price change of any altcoin, you can see lots and lots of pumps and dumps which a few people are getting rich by.

Most the use of most altcoins is indeed to make money to a small number of people.

If an altcoin truly had an innovative feature, I am sure it will get adopted in Bitcoin as well.

You would never hear of it anyway, the mods ensure anything that isn't bitcoin (even good stuff like distributed computing) is swept under the rug and the forums sanitized. Add the mood music of "all altcoins are scams" and subliminal ignorance is the order of the day.

Wouldn't go that far, at least we've got an altcoin section here. There were discussions of getting rid of it completely so I think would should at least be grateful for that.

I'm still looking for a decent altcoin forum...

If Bitcoin is developing it, you're allowed to talk about it. If Bitcoin isn't developing it, but might one day, but an altcoin is  Shocked Thread will last 2min, even if no altcoin is mentioned.

I posted a thread about ternary logic in distributed computing and it got moved to "Off topic" !!  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Not even Technical discussion (I'm sure some would be interested in how Bitcoin could be adapted?) Protocol discussions are moved to altcoin, as though there is nothing that can be learned from other devs.

Innovation isn't considered a useful discussion, but you can have as many about how some guy no one outside this forum has heard of said a nice thing about Bitcoin   Cheesy

A Crypto subforum, where bitcoin and altcoin discussions could intermingle would be a huge benefit to this forum. As long as "all alts are scams", few bitcoiners will go to the altcoin section. And any thread naming an alt is relegated to altcoin so as not offend the eyes of bitcoiners. So there will always be ignorance.

505  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] NeuCoin's 40-page white paper rebuts all nothing at stake objections on: March 26, 2015, 02:02:51 PM
I think a lot of guys on Reddit still bleat about Nothing at Stake, might be worth posting there too.

Don't expect any reasoned arguments though, just PDFs of opinion of others (you know who, two attempts and still nothing concrete in his work Cheesy )

507  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Most undervalued coin? on: March 26, 2015, 08:15:56 AM
i'd have to say NXT as a platform. honestly nothing compares from what i've seen so far. every other coins is great and all but the amount of development on nxt is quite mind boggling. just install the wallet and see yourself. i know about the premine and all, but im betting on their platform than their coin.

There is no (and never has been) any mining in Nxt. The nature of POS means all coins have to be created at Genesis (this has benefits that allow Nxt to be the platform it is). Everyone had almost 2 months to sign up to Nxt (in times before terms like IPO/ICO existed and there were only ~30 coins on coinmarketcap) >> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=303898.0

Only 100 or so people did come forward and then only 73 actually bothered to claim their stake And this is the fault of Nxt how? Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Still amuses me when I see posts about Nxt's genesis  Grin
508  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: First provably safe federated Byzantine agreement protocol on: March 26, 2015, 08:07:28 AM
So the users choose who to trust. It's not centralization and it isn't resource testing, so I guess that is why you are interested. Does this open up a sybil attack angle?

I set up 1000 nodes, trade between myself, maybe even run a business. Other users look to my nodes for what is the 'right' chain. I do that for a while (12 months?) and then turn bad and double spend.

I guess you could wait until a large enough economy has built up where there are many large public bodies operating to mitigate this.

(Is this really about Economic Clustering?)
509  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Alt coins which do not use the same ECDSA as Bitcoin on: March 25, 2015, 01:01:22 PM
Nxt uses...

...elliptic curve analog of modified* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KCDSA (EC-KCDSA).

--------
* - the modification affects hardware EC-KCDSA solutions that are forced to receive a whole message instead of its digest.

... so is different from bitcoin.

510  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which Alt coins implement m-of-n signatures via P2SH? on: March 25, 2015, 12:01:19 PM
I don't know of a list but the next version on Nxt (NRS 1.5.x) will have Two-phased transactions that I think fits the bill.

Here is the post implementation spec: https://nxtforum.org/general/2-phased-transactions-post-implementation-specification/

Two-Phased Transactions

Two-Phased Transactions is multisig transactions implementation in Nxt but much more powerful.

Simplest example, Alice starts a Two-Phased transaction. In the first stage a transaction is included in a blockchain but it isn’t processed immediately and has the status of ‘pending’. For it to be processed, Bob has to complete the second phase of the transaction by approving it. This has to be done before the deadline set by Alice has elapsed.

Use cases

* Bob approving a transaction of Alice

* Shareholders voting whether to send another 1M Nxt to a marketing service or not

* Nxt whales voting on whether to pay bounty or not

* Multisig wallet protected from a hacker(think about BTER case etc)

Features

* any kind of transaction could be 2-phased

* M-of-N consensus or by-balance consensus or shareholders voting to release transaction

* possible vote threshold setting(e.g. only accounts with 1M+ Nxt or 100+ assets balance could vote)

* whitelist of voters

* blacklist of voters

* transaction could be released only prior to maxHeight

I think it is done a different way to P2SH as that is not planned to be included until version 1.7.x (roughly).

What makes you think ternary logic will have an advantage over binary?

Come-from-Beyond runs the version 15.01.01(1) you see on the peerexplorer.com world map. You should try and get some details out of him on what that one can do  Cheesy
514  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: March 25, 2015, 12:14:24 AM
I earned 4.5MM NXT and I'm still running 1.1

This isn't real?!  Angry Angry Angry

How much will you pay for 2 pizzas delivered to your house?

Haha!

So this guy mined 4.5 million NXT?  Now long did that take and what gear?  That's a lot of NXT in my opinion.  I gotta get myself some mining gear; paying dollars for Bitcoin/Crypto is painful.

He was joking, pretending he was on a fork forging all the Nxt. Then being upset about it. I think  Cheesy

You can't mine Nxt directly but a few try to run multipools that pay out in Nxt but they are having problems at the moment, I think. hashraste.org was the main one but, as I say, there are issues that need working out..
515  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: March 24, 2015, 03:31:34 PM
yup  Cheesy peerexplorer.com says there are:

NRS version number(number of instances)

 0.5.12(1), 0.6.2(1), 0.8.12(1), 0.8.3(1), 1.1.4(1), 1.1.5(1), 1.1.6(3), 1.2.5(1), 1.2.8(1), 1.3.1(1), 1.3.2(2), 1.3.3(1)

...all on forks. They'll be forging a whole load of vapour Nxt   Shocked
516  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: March 24, 2015, 03:21:05 PM
If this is you, you aren't part of the network and you are forging on your own fork.

We'll just wait until more people come to this fork and then we'll call it "main chain".  Grin

That is why it the non-fork is referred to as:

the 'real' network

and not

the real network

Cheesy
517  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: March 24, 2015, 02:41:40 PM
P.S. I was reminded of this as I was looking at peerexplorer.com and there are currently 319 nodes securing the network. Not sure this is a high but this highest I have seen it.

Edit: Actually, now I think of it, I have a vague memory of it being 320 once.. but that was in the boom times of cytpo last year  Cheesy
518  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: March 24, 2015, 02:38:23 PM
Reminder: If you are not running NRS from the series 1.4.x, you are on a fork

I know what you're thinking. You are running 1.3.1, you have earned 1000 NXT forging with just 20 NXT in your account, right? Must be a unknown bug that let's you get all the forging fees, right? Better not tell anyone while I am making more Nxt, right?  Smiley

Sorry, but you are not right. If this is you, you aren't part of the network and you are forging on your own fork. What your account is telling you is an illusion and isn't what is actually going on in the 'real' Nxt network. It is always hard to see these guys pop up on nxtforum asking why all their forging fees have 'evaporated' after they recently updated and asking how do they get them back...  Sad They evaporated as they were never part of the 'real' network. Hard lesson to swallow under those circumstances.

So... cautionary tale over  Grin Update to version 1.4.16 now, and then remember to update to Java 8 when you switch to 1.5.
519  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: coins that you can trust for long term on: March 24, 2015, 11:43:02 AM
Nxt for large and expanding core dev team (13 at last count), APIs that allow other projects to be easily built on top of the core (SuperNet, DeBuNe, Jinn, Nxt Academy etc) and a large laid back community that have their eyes firmly set on the long term  Cool And that is without going into any details of the features that are available to users and devs  Grin

Consistently top 10 coin for more than a year (if marketcap means anything) and well positioned for when the bearish sentiment evaporates. Do you own research, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
520  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: CoinMarketCap.com - Market Cap Rankings of All Cryptocurrencies! on: March 24, 2015, 10:03:04 AM
Gliss,

Seems to be a problem in the reporting of Nxt stats.

Current 24h volume is 46,107.

Click through to Nxt's markets and they don't add up: http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/nxt/#markets

24h volumes of the exchanges only comes to about 39,000. So 7000 or so 'missing'. Same with volume %, only 84% accounted for in the market stats.

Thanks
