601  Other / Meta / Re: What is the function of the "Merit" score? on: January 25, 2018, 04:15:07 AM
People will demand merit for airdrops. Merit for tokens, merit for btc.
You can ban those people. Good riddance.
602  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 04:09:05 AM
I don't think many users will waste their time clicking on +Merit and waste few seconds of their life just to give someone some merits.
I waste my time reporting spam and bullshit to the moderators, over and over again.
Now I can be constructive and reward good posts instead of punishing bad ones.
I would say that is an improvement.

a. A person can give only smerits to max 5 members per day .
This limits my ability as a source. I want to spread the sMerit I have (200ish right now), but with that, I couldn't right now.
I would be limited to give many sMerit to a few people, rather than giving a few sMerit to many people (eg 10 to 20 newbies to help them rank up).
603  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: Neues Forum Ranking System / Merit System - Was denkt ihr? on: January 25, 2018, 04:05:29 AM

604  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 03:55:46 AM
I've been thinking, what if your quality post is good and on point but still nobody merit you because they dont give a sht for the merit system or they're lazy to do so. So the conclusion is they will be stuck at their current rank?
Then theymos has made a bad job at selecting merit sources. If you're a source and you dont participate, you do not deserve being one (you dont benefit from being one either).

If the merit system gave stars next to a user's name, with visible icons, and did NOT cost merit to be given merit, then this might work better.
It does not cost merit to give merit. It costs sMerit, which is something different. Read the OP again.
If you still dont understand read this:

You have Merits, those you cannot send.
You also have sMerits, those you can only send, they have no other purpose.

When someone gives Merit to you they lose sMerit of the amount transfered and you gain Merit as well as sMerit (which in case you can send again).

Example: Should I send 10 Merit to you for a post, my sMerit would decrease by 10.
Your Merit would increase by 10 and your sMerit would increase by 5.

Merits are exclusively earned, but the sMerit part you also get keeps the circulation flowing.

(Ignoring merit sources here, for the sake of making an easy example.)

A lot of confusion about Merit and sMerit, maybe that's not the best name for them?
605  Other / Meta / Re: Will the selling merit be a new problem? on: January 25, 2018, 03:50:34 AM
I'll tag them. (Or whatever future method is available for marking spammers)
If theymos is willing, smas could be transformed into something with a global (forum-wide) impact, rather than the currently limited one.
I dont think anyone currently involved with SMAS would object.

606  Other / Archival / Re: sMerit Review on: January 25, 2018, 03:39:40 AM
I would suggest to switch to a self moderated thread and delete suggestions once you have reviewed them. That way, your attempt to reward quality posts doesnt end up being a spam thread itself.
Also, lock the thread when you have used up your sMerit.

I do like the idea of an general "discover my post" thread. However this should be limited to linking good post (If you see it being spammed with links to shitpost, lock and stop reviewing).

(Might be better placed in Meta than services, youre not offering a service, you aren't looking for a reward, you are participating in the forum via using mechanics given by the forum)
607  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 03:34:17 AM
Solution as per me -
2.  please assign a team or give this smerit task to some senior+active members of this forum so that they can distribute it to everyone ..
This is already in place, we call them merit sources, read the OP.
608  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 03:29:29 AM
It seems to be hard to get merits from others. I think it is simply because users should keep merits for themselves in order to be ranked up. Quite hard to get rewarded merits, I guess.
You didnt understand. When someone gives you Merit, they lose sMerit, which is only used to be sent to others and has no purpose besides that.
Hoarding my sMerit doesnt give me any benefit. Likewise, I dont lose any of my Merit (defining my rank) when sending Merit to others, as sMerit are used for that.

If so, what if selling/ buying merits, how to prevent this?
Banhammer to the face.

I respectfully disagree with the first part. Someone who is a week away from becoming a legendary member, for example, will now have to compete for the same 500 Merit points as someone who just became a hero member, in order to reach the legendary member status.
I did start with 500 Cry
609  Other / Meta / Re: Will the selling merit be a new problem? on: January 25, 2018, 03:20:42 AM
Is the selling of trust a problem right now?
the trust maybe not necessary if people didn't want to trade.
Trust is unlimited, I can give out 100 positive trust ratings today, and not lose anything (maybe my credibility, people would stop caring about my ratings, if I just spam them, but you get the idea).

sMerit is limited. I have a responsibility with it. I can use my sMerit to reward good posts, incentive good behaviour with that (publicly shown) reward and help make this forum a better place by increasing the post quality.
Or I can sell it (likely be banned for doing so), incentive spam and contribute to the already very evident problematic of shitposting.

I cant do both, as I have limited ressources. I have to decide, and if I care about this place, this is an easy decision.
610  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 03:10:49 AM
Who can send Merit , anyone or higher rank people?
I think that anyone that has Merit points can send it.
No, you need sMerit to send. Merit cant be transfered, it is forever tied to your account.
(First reply, explanation for tl;dr persons: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.msg28856606#msg28856606)

Sure, and they have big motivation give it to some newbie and do not sell it for someone who pay, especially in our local tear.
Sadly, I am not allowed to sell any of my sMerit and source merit.

But to those who are a week or less to rank up, the timing is bad. Me for example, I'm 5 days short of becoming a full member,
I got the default 10 merit because of my rank, now I need 90 more to rank up, that's the rock bottom.
I'm at 966 activity, well in the upper part of the window for legendary.
I got 500 merit, people with less activity than me got 1000 merit because they hit legendary by chance, sooner than I did.
500 merit. not 10, not 90, 500.

Is the selling of trust a problem right now?
612  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 02:51:42 AM
But I never get merit (yes I wanna higher rank) from forum participants
This system was introduced 4 hours ago. I believe the majority of users on this forum "never" got Merit. This is fresh off the shelf, as new as it could be.
Give it some time, keep writing good posts in the future, and you will get your Merit.

hero is more advantageous to negotiate and give merits to each other for boosting accounts.
The people with the most sMerit right now are legendaries.
They have no incentive to "boost" or "negoiate", as they already have reached the highest possible rank, their Merit has no influence, no matter how much they collect.
Thus they can give out Merit solely on a basis of post quality, and dont have to account for the rank of the user who wrote a post they reward with Merit.

Just thought of another one; if a post has merit and is then deleted, are those issued merits lost?
We can quickly test that, delete your post, I gave you merit.

I don't know if this is an intended consequence, but it would seem that this excludes almost any non-English speaker from higher ranks. Am I incorrect to see this as a little bit unfortunate?
While we communicate in English, this isnt the only language we might speak. I just gave out some Merit in my local section.
I would suspect theymos also has placed some merit sources in the local sections (eg the mods of those sections) to avoid this problematic.
613  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: Inoffizielle Bitcointalk.org Regeln/Richtlinien/FAQ on: January 25, 2018, 02:40:16 AM

614  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 02:33:47 AM
First, I think theymos should clarify whether it is against the forum rules to 'sell' merit or not. It should be.
For me (and other sources), it is. My merit page reads
"You are a merit source. The next XXX merit you spend will come from your source rather than your sMerit balance. Merit spent from your source will come back in 30 days. Unused source merit is wasted. It is not allowed for merit sources to sell their merit."
As sources are the only permanent holder of sMerit (they regain their limit every 30 days), this generally disallows the sale of Merit on a long term perspective.

Why not make Merit and sMerit crypto tokens?
Because this isnt ERC20talk.org

We dont have trust and negtrust tokens either. And that's fine.

BTW, I wonder if the merit will reduce when give to other people
First reply, explanation for those that cant be bothered to read and understand the full OP.

You have Merits, those you cannot send.

Is it allowed to ask for Merits?
For example, I created a long post which I think is of quality and then at the end of my post I say please merit me if you think I am helpful etc. etc... Just like a youtuber asking for likes & subscribers at the end of their video.
This would likely decrease your chances to get merit.
Similar to how it is currently allowed to ask for trust, but people generally frown upon it, and many dont leave trust if asked for.
617  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 02:04:42 AM
I do not understand why it was impossible to start the day after the rank change? On my example - I had 5 days left, but now I need at least three more months
I have 966 activity and actmyname has 952. He is legendary and I am hero. He has 1000 merit, I had to start with 500.
Life is unfair, I know. But at least your taxes are free.
618  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 01:47:14 AM
But here is some suggestion that I will place. I would say making smerit limited to some extent to be sent to one user would be great. Something like max 10 can be sent to  one person.
Currently I think making no limit can be abused easily. Let's say someone has required activity to rank up but not required merit and one with enough smerit can send him but in return he would like to receive some BTC.
Read up, there is a limit.
50 Merit per user in a 30 day window.

Now the question is who can send smerit that much? Say for example negative accounts (I would say locking smerit once one is handed negative would be great) or someone who is not interested in using forum anymore.
You only have a limited amount of sMerit. And newbies start with 0 right now, we are in the privileged position to start with free sMerit due to having higher ranks at the time the system was introduced.
619  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 01:44:06 AM
I have checked a lot of topics in the Bitcoin Discussion and Altcoins Discussion sections, but I didn't noticed any merits received there, although there are  merits received in this topic for "thank you" posts... So this is how the high-quality posts should look like? Unfortunately I can't agree.
It's the first day, this is new to all of us. Give it some time.
Some people are testing right now, simply trying to find out how it works, how to use it (on a mechanical level).
Give it some time, let the dust settle, everyone get used to the system, and then we can judge on how the system is used. Not now.
620  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: January 25, 2018, 01:34:44 AM
3. Going a bit further in time and we have 35 forum members getting 100 sMerit each a month, a total of 3500.
Might be more or less, theymos knows that better.
That's enough for 14 Hero members to level up a month.....if they would get all the points
I think the amount of merit sources is supposed to increase over time.
Theymos has added a set of "initial" sources, and the OP suggests he is searching for more members who would fit and be willing to assume this position.
If we have more sources (and all of them are actively giving out their monthly source merit), we'll have a higher addition to the sMerit supply,
thus higher second level (0.5 of what the sources give out each month), and so on.

Actually I have been legendary for a few weeks already now. Strange you see my rank as hero.
edit; I see my rank as hero as well now, I ranked down?
I saw you as legendary just a few moments ago when I visited your profile after the post by ecuamobi.
Now you're a hero both besides posts and in your profile. I guess this is an error that should/will be fixed (soon).

- Those users who generate 'sm'. They are in different language groups? Or their concentration in the English sector?
I'm not an english native speaker, so yes. There are several (at least two) languages represented with merit sources.
