781  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Are asic miners really as effective as heaters for the winter? on: August 27, 2014, 02:45:28 AM
While they can provide heat, miners have 4 drawbacks:
1) usually no on/off switch
2) not child or pet friendly usually
3) not as cheap as natural gas in some areas for heating
4) Most importantly - hot PCBs and components give off VOCs that pollute the air - these are known carcinogens.  1 miner running 24/7 probably is no worse than new carpet.  Having a farm running in a house with no fresh air could cause permanent detrimental health effects.
4) can be solved by an air purifer if you are concerned about VOCs.

Home air purifiers will not filter out the dangerous VOCs.  They can ionize and capture free ionized elemental particles - they will not filter out VOCs.  You would need a scrubber like those found in respirators or activated filters.

The only solution to this is constantly bringing in clean outside air.  The self contained oil based space heaters don't emit much outside of their metal housing.
782  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Latest miners? What are you using? What's good? What to stay away from? on: August 26, 2014, 07:38:55 PM
I got a call from cointerra today basically because I was one of the suckers that preordered from them last year. He first asked me how my miners were running and I told him I had to sell them all 5 of them three months ago because they were a huge POS. They consumed 50% more power and ran 50% slower than promised. They were very unreliable and super noisy.
So he went on to try to sell 5 more of them for ~$3700 per unit. They said they run at 2TH now and consume 2600watts...I said 2600 watts!?!?!? are you kidding me? I told him no way and check out the bitmaintech antminers. much better deal.

You can buy 6TH worth of antminers for the price of one Cointerra 2TH ($3700 plus shipping =~$4000) and it will use less power/per gh and run cooler and more reliable and quieter. Basically 3x the hashpower for the same price.

They must be taking a page from BFL playbook.  Several of us previous BFL customers got calls from a call center letting us know about about a 20% discount when they had finished their 65nm backlog.  I told the rep about how horrible the entire ordeal was - he asked if I would be interested in placing an order.... then silence for 30 seconds  Shocked

Sorry - is BFL ButterFly Labs?  How are they doing these days anyway regarding miners?

Yes BFL is Butterfly Labs.  Guess the company is doing pretty well since nobody is in prison.  The customers on the other hand...$4600 for a miner that will earn 0.44BTC over it's lifetime assuming free electricity...

HDD will always be cheaper then SSD, so no. HDD is here to stay...

Is that like punch cards will always be cheaper than magnetic storage tapes?

Is that like storage tapes will always be cheaper than magnetic disks?

Banned for abbreviating the word signature with sig.
786  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Safest wallet on: August 26, 2014, 08:05:39 AM
under your definition it is not a wallet. You don't have private keys.
Cool.  Back to the topic at hand then.

what's interesting though, is that coinbase calls itself a digital wallet.
Those lying bastards!  Well that is just my personal terminology to express the distinction.  I wish it was widely accepted but it is not.  However, it is the very first distinction I explain to any noob I meet.  It is actually very eye opening to some of them and gets them to thinking about the difference between having cash in their pocket and loaning their money to a bank.

Haha laughed my ass off at that first remark. Well technically it is a wallet, but they are in control of your keys and they never show them to you.  It's not an exchange either since you can't place orders for trading.  It would be closest to an online account with eTrade or CapitolOne where Coinbase is the custodian for your coins.

Having said that it is safeest for people who would be prone to forget their password since you could find other ways to prove your identity to Coinbase.  If you can commit a decent password to memory or are willing to use a paper wallet or hard wallet like Trezor that would be a better option.
787  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need help buying small amount of bitcoin on: August 26, 2014, 07:58:59 AM
Why not try buy from the Currency Exchange subforum here? You can often find people wiling to sell for market rate with no fees. What payment options are you willing to/can use? Also, what website are you trying to order from?

Probably because with $40 any kind of wire, bank transfer, or other bank payment would incur too many fees.  Paypal would put the seller at risk of a chargeback.
788  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which is the best project to start? gambing, faucet, dice, casino etc? on: August 26, 2014, 07:51:48 AM
What you do is hang out here for hours at a time and get involved with trades and buying things.  Sooner or later you'll want something or a service, realize that nobody has established one to your liking and there's your business.
789  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Am I infected by Trojan Miner ? on: August 26, 2014, 07:49:42 AM
I ran a netstat on my machine and found a certain connection with a foreign address...

pool-108-51-140-90:14905

Does anyone know what is this ? Is it a mining pool where I am connected ?

Check your CPU usage, it should be really high like 60% and above if someone is mining on your computer..

Who would even still try and mine bitcoins with others CPU's.

People who have an automated script to go an infect multiple machines.  They don't need to manually control your machine, they can controls herds of machines - BOTNET.

Although botnets could probably make more money doing something other than mining.
790  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 11 Planes were taken by rebels in Libya, potentiel terrorist attacks incoming on: August 26, 2014, 07:43:15 AM
there are so many airplane hijacking in the world, such as MH370 malaysia airplane, but there is no progress about it, who is the hijacker (terrorist or the other) we do not know, about 11 planes were taken by rebels in libya, we don't know about it's a terrorist action or not, maybe another country has involved to this terrorist action, hopefully this is just a local crime ...

Do you know something the rest of don't are you just guessing like CNN with it's 1001 hypotheses?
791  Other / Politics & Society / Re: A Terrorist Horror, Then Golf: Incongruity Fuels Obama Critics on: August 26, 2014, 07:38:57 AM
There is much too much going on in both the world and in the US in order for it to be appropriate for him to be going on vacation. It would be one thing if he was simply trying to get away from Washington to get a change of scenery, but the fact that he is spending hours away from any kind of work is very troubling. I think he has already made up his mind as to what he is going to do with his foreign policy and that is nothing.

I have many issues with this POTUS, but vacation is not one of them.  People jumped on Bush playing golf.  Very few people can imagine how stressful work like that can be.  Clearly it has aged him.  The media is harping on the wrong things.

I spent a lot of my youth cramming for classes and tests. In med school I had some tests that were given 3 hours after the lecture.  During my internship on night float I found myself crying due to constant sleep deprived state and feeling alone - and I have never cried watching a movie or TV.  It just wears you down and the body can't cope.  The man is probably woken up in the middle of the night every night for something.

He said what he had to say.  I didn't look at the speech.

If the media wants to be critical of him they should focus on why his crowning achievement of ACA is such a failure.
Yes I agree that the president deserves to go on vacation every once and a while but he shouldn't be doing it in times of crisis. Obama going on vacation now is very similar to as if Bush had gone on vacation right after 9/11 or right before the Iraq war started. There are several crisis going on in our country and around the world that need his immediate attention. Once these are taken care of and/or are somewhat under control then he can go on vacation.

Look at my past history of posts that I've made about Obama.  On here and other forums I mock the man.  He is a Jr Senator with no real world employment who managed to work his way into the White House thanks to a smooth media campaign, his race and some help from people in the right places (Kennedys).

Is he short sighted - yes.  Does he understand small business - no.  Is he any better than Republicans at reigning in crony capitalism - he's worse.  Is he at least honest with his ineptitude like Carter - no, he thinks he's God with his executive orders.

But he is the POTUS.  One man getting beheaded and the middle east going up in flames is nothing new.  How many people died in VA hospitals that day in a sadder way than the journalist - probably many.  How many people died in gang violence that day - probably many.  These are all chronic conditions but the media only wants to exploit the acute and sadly some of the posts are harping on him not shedding a tear.  It's never the right time for a president to party.  To the parents of the journalist I could understand them being disgusted.

Being in a position where I have coded people and pronounced more than 10 people dead in an hour before and still gone home and watched a movie - I will cut the POTUS some slack.  Sometimes you just need to clear the brain no matter how much you care.  That's my opinion.

I thought his behavior after Benghazi was more sacrilegious. He also missed Major General Harold Greene's funeral and made no comment on it but he had to comment on Robin Williams.  Clearly this president was not cut from the same cloth as our armed forces.
792  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Julian Assange Announces Plan to Leave Ecuadorian Embassy 'Soon' on: August 26, 2014, 07:17:47 AM
Whatever health issues he has ,he is responsible for. He has allegedly leaked important classified information. If he is extradited back to the USA he will be given due process. He has chosen not to have his date in court. Therefore, he has to accept the consequences of his actions which has resulted in his poor health. The USA is not barbaric he would not be shot on the spot. Ask the terrorists that have been incarcerated . No sympathy just a fair trial is all he deserves.

You don't pay much attention to what's really going on around the world do you? The reason the UK police supposedly wanted him was because of rape allegations in Sweden, same reason the Swedish police want him and depending on who you listen to it's either a serious crime that women are out to get him for or the Americans made it up to try and get him held in Sweden so they could get more time to extradite him.

Also, the USA not barbaric? You still have the fucking death penalty and even on this board there are still people who seem to think that's okay.

You don't get out much do you.  Let's try a country like Singapore.  Burma.  Belize.  China.  Russia.  Mexico.

USA looks like a Sandals vacation resort compared to most anywhere else in the world.
793  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why "Good Cops" Stay Silent: The Persecution of Officer Adam Basford on: August 26, 2014, 07:11:16 AM
So not only are Central Americans invading North America, so is their police force.  What is this crap!?!

If this kind of crap happened in medicine we would have Senators crawling through the hospital throwing subpoenas left and right.

Guess law enforcement needs some clean up.
794  Other / Politics & Society / Re: IRS claims it has LOST two years' worth of emails from former official Lerner on: August 26, 2014, 07:04:48 AM

Judicial Watch Says DOJ Attorney Told Them Lerner Emails Do Exist…

A Justice Department official admitted that former IRS official Lois Lerner’s apparently missing emails actually exist on a backup server, but the government doesn’t plan to retrieve them.

“A Department of Justice attorney told a Judicial Watch attorney on Friday that it turns out the federal government backs up all computer records in case something terrible happens in Washington and there’s a catastrophe, so the government can continue operating,” Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton told Fox News’ Shannon Bream.

But it would be too hard to go get lois lerner’s emails from that backup system,” Fitton continued, paraphrasing the DOJ official.

Standard government line.  We went through this elaborate setup to make backups but now find it inconvenient to have to retrieve them.

Government makes watchdog committees that file reports on government waste - only to have said reports piled in a room and nobody bothers reading them and they have to spend money storing them.

Well at least it's better - it went from sheer statistical impossibility to general government malaise.
795  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Seasonic X-1250 PSU for S3 mining on: August 26, 2014, 06:59:33 AM
The Seasonic will easily run 2 and could even handle 3 if not overclocked.

Seasonic pretty much OEMs for 1/2 the big name brands (Antec, Coolermaster, EVGA) - not sure where you're getting the deceptive FUD from.
796  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Multiple S1 Setup - FiOS - Assigning IPs? on: August 26, 2014, 05:57:27 AM
It might be a good idea to assign them a static IP and put it a little bit higher than the normal range so you don't get any conflicts that could lead to miner downtime.
797  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S1 Running Half-Speed - Powered by single CX750M on: August 26, 2014, 05:54:51 AM
What do you mean it is running 1/2 speed?  It's only doing 220GH/s?

Look here and make sure you fed it power to both boards and not just one board:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=725161.0

Log into the miner and check and see if both boards are working under miner status tab, look down at the bottom right where it says ASIC Status - it should be all "o" and no "x"s.
798  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: *** GHash.IO mining pool official page *** on: August 26, 2014, 05:42:08 AM
Wow the fees are getting so high for the cloud hashing it's almost as if I need to dump my account because the 3% referral hashrate is actually eating into my owned hardware income.

How in the world can you justify maintenance fees costing more than the earned income?
799  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] Various PCIe 6-Pin & 8-pin cables, Adaptors on: August 26, 2014, 03:01:08 AM
I have a bunch of new & used cabling, adaptors, PSUs and such that's I'm going to be listing over the next few days.  I live in the Los Angeles area (use 90701 as ref zip).  I can ship but I don't really have any shipping discount as I don't have a merchant account.  All new items are unused, all used items should be assumed to have been mined with unless otherwise stated and everything is working like new unless explicitly stated as dead or as-is.

(4) NEW Gigabyte OEM (2) 4-pin molex to 8-pin PCIe convertors.  PN 12CF1-1PW013-11R.  These came with my R9 290s.  18AWG - decent cable and crimps - $3.99 each
(36) NEW Sapphire OEM 4-pin molex to 6-pin PCIe convertors.  PN 146-00699-0000F.  These came with various sapphire cards from 6950 to 7970s. 18AWG - very good cables - still using about 100 of them on my farm and not a single problem - $2.99 each
(16) NEW ASUS/MSI OEM (2) 4-pin molex to 6-pin PCI convertors. These came with various cards again. 18AWG - seem pretty beefy for 18AWG and pull from 2 molex connectors but haven't used them myself - $2.99 each
800  Other / Off-topic / Re: Ask TF thread on: August 25, 2014, 10:19:37 PM
Why would anyone buy a tainted account like his? Granted its a VIP account, I think but with so many negative trust it really isn't worth much, if anything. My coin is that its the real TF, it may not be, but it makes no sense that it wouldn't be..

He's become a celebrity in the Bitcoin world everyone knows of him and thats why is account would be valuable. his account probably would of sold for 20 Bitcoin +++

By that measure Pirate's account would be about:

820,000/4000 * 20BTC = 4100 BTC.  Pirate could sell his account to somebody and use the funds to pay back all of TF's loses.  Scary how that number works out almost exactly  Shocked
