If they are anything like the police I know in England, they are just like other people- perhaps more jaded and cynical (London Met or other city police), but the real problem is when you collectivize a service with no accountability (or extremely limited) you create a honeypot for traumatized and abusive individuals with a penchant for all manner of vices, violence and corruption, which make up a relatively small portion of the staff.
782  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is France Experiencing Blowback from Muslims? on: January 12, 2015, 04:58:35 PM
Could be blowback- or a clever manipulation of fanatics by people that want to divide the west and alienate moderate muslims.
783  Economy / Speculation / Re: Surprise Factor Analysis on: January 12, 2015, 12:05:05 PM
So, I too stare daily at the pretty green and red lines at bitcoinwisdom.
I have no idea what to make of them, and I see them analysed in so many different ways that I won't even try another.

But what I recently realised, reading this forum, is that the most consistent thing I hear, from many users, is "bitcoin always surprises us all".

Thus this poll: what would surprise you if it happened in 2015?
You can choose multiple options, and let me know if you want me to add any.

My personal opinion: in 2014 I was supper sure there would be a big rise by the end of summer. Boo at ridiculous past me. This year, I feel quite confident that we'll have a generally flat market.
Let's see if I get booed at my myself in 2016.

Cheers Smiley

Heh, I read through the options and I can't find one that surprises me. The only one that would come close is the slow rise. Bitcoin has too much FOMO to have a slow rise. A little bit of rise will trigger a cascade effect and everyone thinks they're missing the train. I guess the two higher prices would be a little surprise because I'm thinking the next bull run may get $5k MAYBE, but that may take a year and a half or so after a bottom is found. But ultimately, Bitcoin never ceases to amaze, and it will do the same for years to come.

Just from speaking with friends about bitcoin (who invested on my advice, but did not sell on my advice), the average joe has been burned pretty bad- think silver stackers *20... I would be surprised for them to enter the market once more. Maybe we are heading for a choppy down market for a year or two before any major uptrend?
784  Economy / Speculation / Re: BitPay laid off nine employees yesterday. on: January 12, 2015, 11:24:44 AM

The cynic in me hopes that is actually their business model, meaning that once they run out of VC funds they get to blow up in true Bitcoin Enterprise fashion.

Ad thus balance is restored!

Disciplined army? Repetitive posting is as tiresome no matter what your leaning, bull or bear.
786  Economy / Speculation / Re: If you are waiting for the "desperation phase" to buy like in 2011 consider this on: January 10, 2015, 11:06:29 PM
They're dead now, but sure a lot of people got wiped out. Bitcoin is not tulip bulbs though. why not whack out a south sea chart to mix it up a bit?
Dotcom bubble, the South Sea bubble, the housing bubble...

Whatever floats your boat.

Thing is, I don't believe there was ever any dispute that there were bubbles or that we are In a bear market. The next few months will really be an indicator of how much interest is left. we aren't going to zero.

788  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitstamp rapid sell/buy coming? on: January 09, 2015, 11:54:33 PM
I thought I would panic buy at first, and then I changed my mind. Bitcoin is still in a bear market and we still don't know if Stamp is liquid anyway. The price will swing too wildly to really predict, so I'll sit on my fiat and wait a bit to see. Bitcoin didn't hit the moon on paypal news, so I don't see why for most traders their money NOT having been lost is a reason to go to the moon.

This ^. I'll stay in fiat until the air clears and a solid direction or stability is found.
789  Economy / Speculation / Re: Ross (Dread Pirate Roberts) Ulbricht Trial Set for Jan 13 (Tues) on: January 09, 2015, 11:50:51 PM
If I could be, I'd be handing out fliers at the court house. I'll just have to settle with donating to his legal expenses.

I do not think that the 'law' will be kind to him.
790  Economy / Speculation / Re: Ross (Dread Pirate Roberts) Ulbricht Trial Set for Jan 13 (Tues) on: January 09, 2015, 07:23:36 AM
Seems good well this might get some highlighting but right now the focus is all on Stamp
So this might just get put off the main radar for a while.

It's a shame. I would say it's more important than an exchange suspending operations.
791  Economy / Speculation / Re: I'm All In - Sold My House! on: January 08, 2015, 07:43:39 AM
It would be sweet if he come back again and inform us on what he did with those bitcoins.

I would like to know as well.

Looks like he was active a few months back, would suggest that he's still around at least lurking. Why not send him a PM?
792  Economy / Speculation / Re: hodling or holding? on: January 08, 2015, 07:41:59 AM
What's the story with this one?  Is there a story?

I think it all started with this thread..

and it's becoming quite famous

Haha thanks for sharing that I've never read the OP of that thread.
793  Economy / Speculation / Re: hodling or holding? on: January 08, 2015, 07:26:00 AM
I'm guessing it's just a quirk that caught on. Like cutting your 'loose'. I actually find that funnier because it sounds silly when read out loud.
794  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin/USD Trade Thread by Professional on: January 07, 2015, 09:08:19 PM
I appreciate you taking the time to post your trades, but evens a single sentence explaining your rationale would put greater weight behind your predictions.
795  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin crashes through $300 floor on: January 07, 2015, 08:59:34 PM
Not clear how real this is. Many traders have assets stuck on Bitstamp and are out of the market for now.

Agree. This rally seems premature.
796  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitstamp's stolen BTC on the move on: January 07, 2015, 07:06:47 PM
I don't believe that marking coins is a good idea, just interesting to think about since most people crave reassurance and security.

that RFID chip stuff is crazy.
797  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitstamp's stolen BTC on the move on: January 07, 2015, 05:11:37 PM
Let's hope they will dump in btc-e  and all my bids  get filled. Or maybe bitstamp, have orders there too.  Grin

I doubt they will sell the coins on the same exchange they stole them from.   Wink

This does present an interesting point though- for example would an exchange have claim to the stolen funds after some time has passed and the coin has (legitimately) changed hands many times after the thief dumped them. I suppose not, as that could destroy confidence.

Are we moving closer to white/grey/black market coins?
798  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitstamp's stolen BTC on the move on: January 07, 2015, 11:03:31 AM
This will be interesting. If these coins go to an exchange (that accepts them), well that's obviously not good for their rep.
799  Economy / Collectibles / Re: ◯ PRICE DROP!! :) Pure .999 Silver Coins!- 'Goxxed For The Last Time'◯ on: January 07, 2015, 07:15:47 AM
Now sold out of silver gox coins Smiley Pop me a message if you are interested in any from the next run of coins I'll be ordering.. I think off the top of my head the numbers are 35+

I have a limited amount of plated accessible if anyone is interested (due to moving).

I just checked this thread and saw the price of the silver plated coins in the OP. The solid silver is one of the coins that have been on my To-Buy list for a minute now (along with one of your UNO bars), but at the moment I have to double-down on saving for a second bundle-of-joy to be joining our little family in April!  However, I can afford to spend £5 worth of BTC for one of the silver plated (+ Intl. shipping to US), and I'm itching to buy a new coin!

Please let me know if you still have one of the plated you could sell, and if so please shoot me a PM with a Bitcoin address & quote for £5 equivalent. It will be promptly paid and shipping details will be provided!

I'm sure the plated version still looks beautiful, and it will be a nice stand-in/reminder for myself to get the solid version ASAP.

Thanks!

Hi snarl! First off congratulations! I'll pop you a PM today about the coin Smiley
800  Economy / Speculation / Re: History repeates 2011 right now? on: January 06, 2015, 10:14:48 PM
Interesting, but I'm not entirely convinced of the correlation. BTC was in a very different position in so many ways back in 2011.
