Where would you say has invested in Knowledge? I would assume that it is less to do with government and more to do with *access* (at least in my experience)

But it is the duty of the government to make knowledge and education more accessible to the citizens, isn't it? Perhaps the UK government can improve the level of computer knowledge by sending in teachers from the posh localities to the schools and colleges in the poorer regions?

I am from one of the "poorer regions" and only have the level of knowledge because I was lucky enough to have access when young (family in telecoms) coupled with reasonable intelligence, which at my age had absolutely nothing to do with state education despite my schools being reasonably equipped. This combined with encouragement from my family members is the part of the reason I was able to 'better myself' socially.

My point is that you can lead a horse to water. About 5% (generous estimation) of my students have the motivation, innate intelligence and family support making them more likely to be significantly above average. I would not class myself as much above average.

But I agree the duty (at least ostensibly) taken upon itself by the state is to increase levels of knowledge even if it does so haphazardly. There are some initiatives, like Raspberry Pi, but I believe this was from the private sector worrying about state education's lack of real computer education and Britain becoming even less competitive. I mention this as the state education is far behind even in the UK.

Still a resource based economy, not a knowledge based. Resource based economics will plummet in relative value in the Knowledge Age.

Then you will have to admit that most of the Latin American nations (Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru.etc) are resource based economies. Other sectors such as IT / Banking / Services will never get big there.

Knowledge based economies need huge investment in education and encouragement from the government. These nations don't bother much about it.

Where would you say has invested in Knowledge? I would assume that it is less to do with government and more to do with *access* (at least in my experience), I have experience in education and the poorer parts of the UK lack access (at home) and get some education but usually lack the personal initiative to make use of the facilities as the level they are taught at is extremely low level.

To be clear I am referencing very basic levels of technological literacy as it concerns the (young) public.

Seems most teenagers get how to use social media, but lack fundamental understanding of computers.

This is great news for all the winners.
1544  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin adoption slowing; Coinbase + Bitpay is enough to make Bitcoin a fiat on: April 11, 2014, 01:09:04 AM
Some great points on using debasement to fund the network instead of tx fees. Always seemed strange to me to just assume that fees are the best way to go.

At what point do we start talking about legal action? I guess we need to ID him first?

You should gather what info you have on him, but not sure what legal action would be successful here.

I think legal action is realistic as long as you have the information, I'm sure coinroll would love someone else to do their job for them.

Yeah, but what do you have other than an email address? Will law enforcement even be interested in or do anything about theft of bitcoins?

If there is only an email address then I do not know how anyone could proceed without the assistance of law enforcement or perhaps some super hackers. And for 100BTC? I doubt anything will be done.

Besides I don't think anything will happen. If anything could have been done someone would have stepped forward already and there has been radio silence as far as I know.
1546  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: MTGOX <-> BTC BID/ASK on: April 03, 2014, 02:09:24 PM
What I think is going to happen: gox is somehow going to get the funds, maybe a majority through "finding" bitcoins. Then you will be able to withdraw cash and bitcoin from the website. Am I too optimistic?  Grin

I think a little... I think we are looking at getting *something* back. I think that the fiat claims may be safer, as to the BTC... We are probably talking single digit percentages of claimed amounts. This is just based on a guess though.
1547  Economy / Investor-based games / Re: btc-arbs.com - Daily ROI (0.01-10%) Update: Registration issues + deposits on: April 03, 2014, 01:28:29 PM
I'm out for now.  Too many weird things recently.  If they prove their legitimacy, I'll get back in, but now they're just too sketchy for me.  I might look into bitcoin-trader.biz (they do arbitrage too, and are significantly more trustworthy) when the price of bitcoin goes back up.

bitcointrader.biz demands a great deal more trust as once you deposit you can't pull out for 120 days.   To me that makes it much more likely to be a scam.

So because they demand more trust, they're less likely to be a scam? Wait, or, more likely? I'm confused.

No ... Turning over your money for 120 days requires a lot more trust and leaves them a lot more room to just take off at some point.   Anyway I looked at the bitcointrader.biz several times, but personal it feels more like a scam to me than btc-arbs.com does and that is saying a lot.

Have to strongly disagree with you on this one - I've played traditional HYIPs (aka ponzis) for years and btc-arbs definitely has a much higher chance of being a straight up ponzi than Bitcoin Trader. Why?

1) Bitcoin Trader started off as invite only and to this day they do not advertise on any of the HYIP-related forums. Btc Arbs on the other hand advertises on the biggest HYIP blog of them all - MNO:

http://money-news-online.com/blog/2014/02/18/18022014-btcarbs-review-daily-news-hyip-industry/

You will notice even the reviewer on MNO says not to listen to the statements about doing BTC arbitrage as it is commonplace in the HYIP industry to pretend to conduct some real business activity (forex trading is often used).

A true HYIP/Ponzi requires constant money coming in - Btc Arbs is clearly more reliant on new funds coming in than Bitcoin Trader.

In fact, there has been talk that Bitcoin Trader will eventually have to stop new deposits (as arbitrage trading has limitations as to how much money you can realistically move around).

2) Bitcoin Trader has posted losing (i.e. negative return) days. I don't believe Btc Arbs has ever posted a losing day.

3) Mining. The fact that Bitcoin Trader is also involved in mining adds to their legitimacy and provides a safety net of sorts as they have other sources of income (i.e. not only reliant on new money coming in).

4) Fiat conversion. Another safety net for Bitcoin Trader. You make a deposit and it is calculated in USD. Your returns are in USD. This provides stability. Btc Arbs is only dealing in BTC, so they are susceptible to the wild price fluctuations of BTC. For example, say you deposited a large amount of BTC a few weeks back. If they convert it now to supply fiat to their trading activities, they would be getting a considerable amount less would they not?

5) The owner of Bitcoin Trader does not hide his identity and if you have a 20k or greater deposit you can actually meet with him in person and discuss other opportunities with him. The odds are high that he is a legitimate Bitcoin entrepreneur, while nothing is known at all about BTC Arbs' owner.

I spent a good deal of time researching both of these programs and I ended up going with Bitcoin Trader only. I check this thread periodically to see if any new info has surfaced that increases the chances of Btc Arbs being legit as I would love to diversify and put some money with them as well. As of now, I don't feel confident in doing so.

Hope this helps anyone who is considering these two programs. If anyone does decide to join Bitcoin Trader, please use my referral link:

https://bitcoin-trader.biz/?ref=lbritish

Great info, thanks for that.

Not if the UK has the planned EU referendum we won't Tongue

Even if we do, do you really think the public has that much of a spine? I'm sure that people are somewhat sceptical but I really can't see anything happening even if we do hold a vote.

And on the tiny chance we do leave, will the vindictive political backlash of the EU cause us to go running back? It would surely put pressure on whichever party is currently in power.

I can't see any good situation occurring from this. There's too much short term pain from leaving.

And as to "favourite" political party. We all know it will be more of the same. I guess I enjoy the ones that make me smile and occassionally speak a nugget of truth.

My guess would be that it's up to Coinroll, who so far (to my knowledge) seem uninterested in resolving this. But maybe they've been making investigations of their own. Though I'm sure some people in the forum are aware of John's identity. I'm not really sure why there isn't more of a response to this.

The address still has the coin in, I'm sure more people than myself is watching it.

My guess is John has been incapacitated or has had some hardware problem. Though his popping up and paying Theymos then disappearing again is massively suspicious. Perhaps we'll never know.

Thank you bigtimespaghetti.

Btw it seems that Istvan is still interested in mining and he has a new BMW Smiley:

Oh dear. Well I still haven't heard back, my wedding is this weekend so I will not be able to concentrate on this for another couple of weeks.

My sincere apologies guys. I will follow this up as I have been though.

Yeah, there are good people too. Theymos, if you need someone else to hold those coins, ... ... Smiley

I think, more than anything, John K does not have the intention of just disappearing. Something has happened to him, and unfortunately we don't know what.

Didn't he disappear for a couple of months before he returned? (only to disappear again).

Exactly, it's all very strange.
1555  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [POLL] Would you support a Litecoin [LTC] to X11 algorithm hardfork? on: April 01, 2014, 09:42:42 AM
What exactly would prevent the new algo from having an ASIC developed for it? Surely it's impractical to fork every time ASICs come on to the scene?

I'm all for forking, and people starting projects to work on but I think keeping the name will cause confusion and hurt Litecoin rather than help it.

"Maco and I have been talking to a company that can make physical 42 silver rounds. They have a minimum order so we may arrange a group buy. I will update you as we get more information."

anymore info on this preorder? very interested.

I was planning on creating a copper/brass or silver round based on 42. If Hendos does not take off, I'll be sure to continue with my plans.

bigtime, I would remove your wallet address and private msg that info to hendo instead because bitcointalk mods not like that very much

nice update 42 team

Thanks DianaLime.

We need to get the developers to be more active quickly.
Look at the price action!!
Some non-mineable coins rise ridiculously fast while DMD is down a ton.

When was the last word from the devs? I honestly can't remember.

Messaged Hendo and Maco, but haven't heard back. I thought they were back online after moving?

I'm not in a hurry, so I can go a long time without the devs.  They were silent before.  I would keep listening for tx42.  He had progressed on a new algorithm for the 42.  Also, tx42 had discussed a "community fork" of the 42 when the devs had been absent before.

Worst case: we take over the 42.

My plan: be patient.

I messaged as I wanted to promote 42 with some products. A fork certainly seems like a good idea, especially with scrypt ASICs. Must say it's a bit of a let down- that's a lot of effort to go to for a massive pump and dump don't you think?
