8061  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Mt.Gox - Resuming Dwolla’s full support for our US Customers on: August 22, 2012, 05:10:12 PM
...and for the Dwolla side?

I recall there needed to be:
ID
SSN
30 days account
Social network

Is all of this still required on the Dwolla side with MtGox?
That "social network" requirement is ridiculous. WTF am I supposed to do,  join FaceBook so I can use Dwolla? Let's start a social website called "God's Army to Resist Dwolla".    Then when filling out the form you can say "social network..." Oh, ok I have a GARD account.

8062  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: bitinstant paycard on: August 22, 2012, 04:57:24 PM
interesting. the tax situation is complicated, because you need to know your cost basis in order to know what is capital gains income... and bitinstant wouldn't have that information. I'd imagine we'll be doing our taxes ourselves.
That's a good point. If I fund an Gox account via bitinstant that alone is not taxable. If I then buy coins and they appreciate I would owe capitol gains on the rise in value. But how would bitinstant know what I paid or even if I executed a buy?

I believe this would violate the Americans with disabilities act and therefore would be illegal.
8064  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is a lot like egold. Egold was shutdown after having many HYIPs/Ponzis. on: August 22, 2012, 04:08:29 PM
i herd rumors the govt is going to shut down and seize all bitcoin servers from the owners next month!
I also heard the pyramids were built by aliens. The world is full of B.S. You should ask the fool who told you that "what servers, there are no bitcoin servers?" And how are they going to get the bitcoins back when no one even knows who owns them? Are they coming to peoples houses to look for USB sticks? Also, will we be invading other countries to get them?
Sorry bro, but I gota roll my eyes at this one. Roll Eyes
8065  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is a lot like egold. Egold was shutdown after having many HYIPs/Ponzis. on: August 22, 2012, 03:52:51 PM
Yeah, except that Bitcoin cannot be shut down because it is decentralized - big difference from eGold.
+1
That makes bitcoin nothing like eGold.
8066  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If Pirate Runs: The Danger of one entity with 500K BTC on: August 21, 2012, 06:09:23 PM
If it seems to good to be true, then it probably is. But I think it would be harder to get away with than some are saying. I suppose that some people have thousands in this scheme/investment opportunity. Knowing that bitcoiners are more tech savy than most and more self starting, it might be bad for his health to run. After all, isn't BTC the perfect choice for hiring a hit man?

But he hasn't run yet, or done anything wrong yet.
8067  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: bitinstant paycard on: August 21, 2012, 05:39:43 PM
I'm guessing a SSN/Tax ID is going to be required for AML/PATRIOT ACT bullshit.

Absolutely.  The gubment isn't gonna let anyone do electronic transactions in USD without the mark on their forehead.
Then I guess my new name for the card is "Mark Forehead."  Wink

Not to derail us, but I just wanted to thank the OP for such a well done post.
Cheers peer!
8069  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: bitinstant paycard on: August 20, 2012, 08:07:59 PM
As evidence that bitcoin is growing, I heard about this first from a non-bitcoiner.
And I want one of those first 1000 cards. Please-please-please!

8071  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If I were to run a Bitcoin scam... on: August 20, 2012, 07:37:19 PM
What you are seeing is the brutality of a real free market. Get used to market manipulation if you are going to be in the bitcoin economy. Unless you prefer government regulation?
8072  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Isn't this whole bitcoin thing just a big scammers party? on: August 20, 2012, 07:29:13 PM
everywhere I look I see scam sites, untrustworthy people, hackers and pyramid schemes running riot,

isn't this whole bitcoin thing just a trap? I don't really see why you'd want to be part of it...
Everywhere you see money you will see those things. If you look harder you will also see honest people doing good work.

8074  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BITCOIN MAGAZINE ARRIVED! on: August 20, 2012, 06:44:02 PM
I see my local B&N is one of the stores that will carry the magazine. We should try to buy all the stores out!

What for? To artificially inflate demand to force/encourage Matt/Vladimir to increase production resulting in increased cost and a total bust when the community suddenly decides to stop following this amazing plan of "buying all the stores out"?

True, but if few sell they may yank them from the shelves before finding an audience. I'm most excited about the customers who find it on the rack and say: "WTF is bitcoin?, hmm, let's see.... Woah sweet!"

8076  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Reason for current Bitcoin crash on: August 20, 2012, 06:15:53 PM
I for one love panic. I have found that the most profitable circumstances arise during a panic. New peers especially are vulnerable. They buy at $13 then they see that the price has dropped to $8 and dump their coins. Of course later that day the price has gone up to $9 and there is a lot of crying.
The best time to buy is when people are panic selling. The best time to sell is during frenzied buying, like last weeks rapid climb to $14. Those people are acting irrationally. Timing it is the trick. How high and low will she go? That is guesswork.
8077  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do you trust MtGox? on: August 20, 2012, 06:06:09 PM
I trust Mt.Gox. Then again I trust my Mom, but I would never put her in charge of all my bitwealth. As good as they are, Gox could get hacked and drained. I like to keep only my day-trading coins there and the rest are maintained as securely as a suitcase of cash.
8078  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin anonimity on: August 20, 2012, 05:58:50 PM
I think they mean "CAN be linked to IP addresses". By can I mean unless they covered their tracks.
Or perhaps the FBI is still trying to figure it all out, and not doing well.

I heard Gavin is coming out of the closet in September!

Sorry Gavin, could not resist.
