842  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Electric Bikes runs on Lighning network on: November 04, 2018, 07:33:58 PM
Meh.

I don't think anything like this makes sense when you're thinking about how easy it easy to use this now. If we're going to have to wait years for the LN to actually be bug-free and coming to fruition then it's not going to be worth the time wasted. Bikes are already here, people use their credit cards (or cash) at kiosks to get the bikes. Why do we need Bitcoin for this sort of thing?

Makes no sense to me, and this isn't going to increase adoption. We've just introduced an alternative that isn't going to get used.

I ask the opposite, why do we need to rely so heavily on 3 parts for such a simple operation?

Cryptocurrencies could facilitate the use of products where humans interact only with machines. As is the case with these bikes, as is the case with snack machines. It could be the case of self service kiosks that are already widely used at McDonalds.

Credit cards are not perfect. In certain situations they are insecure, they require a lot of information. And they are still not universal, since many people do not have a bank account.
843  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin price determinants on: November 04, 2018, 01:33:44 PM
I believe that the value of the dollar puts more pressure on the price than the value of gold. The dollar has appreciations and devaluations in relation to other currencies and Bitcoin is traded in several places around the world. In many of these places, the traders who started trading Bitcoin came from the forex market and always observe the price of the local currency, the dollar and Bitcoin.

Wikipedia you would perhaps have to join several articles that are correlated to Bitcoin. Blockchain, cryptocurrencies etc. Something that could also be taken into account are articles written by the traditional media. TV programs, technology sites and common websites. They talk about Bitcoin for a new audience. They always start talking more when the price goes up a lot, or falls a lot. But what is the impact on price?
844  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Civil's token sale failed b/ people buy into blockchain to make money(NYtimes) on: November 04, 2018, 01:15:27 PM
Blockchain-powered network Civil's token sale failed because people buy into blockchain to make money and don't necessarily want to use it to “fix” journalism

Alas, the Blockchain Won’t Save Journalism After All

By Jonah Engel Bromwich

The Problem
The technology that undergirds cryptocurrency is complex, but because it’s been touted as the next big thing for the last several years — teenagers have Coinbase Wallets and various semi-normal people got rich quick with Bitcoin and then poor quicker — it feels as if even the less financially sophisticated of us should have wrapped our heads around the whole phenomenon.

People who are in a strong position to understand what Civil is doing — either because they are experts on blockchain technology or because they work for one of its newsrooms — have openly admitted that they don’t understand how the organization works. The rate of such statements only increased as Civil’s token sale got underway in September.

Joe Weisenthal

I know it's in vogue to say this, but I've read at least a dozen explainers/articles/videos now on Civil, and I don't get it either.

Neeraj K. Agrawal
@NeerajKA
I don’t understand how Civil works

The collective confusion might have something to do with how the Civil token (called a CVL) is meant to work.

“People who want to buy CVL tokens are token buyers, not investors,” Mr. Iles said this summer. “The consumer token is critical to us because what we are essentially doing for the person is deploying a cryptocurrency that is primarily about using it to operate a network.”

In essence, that means: Buying CVL isn’t meant to make you money.

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (which introduced blockchain technology to the world) and Ethereum are commodities — like gold, they fluctuate in value whether they are used or not. CVL tokens were designed to function as consumer items. In practice, that means that Bitcoin and Ethereum have tempted even know-nothings to make a purchase in the hopes of getting rich quick. Civil is asking people to buy in for the privilege of enthusiastically participating in running a blockchain-media platform.

Or, as Mr. Iles put it: “We even think that we are going to be able to show people that it’s more fun, it’s more rewarding, to pay for the news using CVL tokens as opposed to cash.”

But many people aren’t willing to pay normal money for journalism.

“Look, we sometimes get asked, are we too early?” Mr. Iles said. “And the answer is absolutely yes. But you only are ever going to be too early or too late.”

Fewer than three thousand people were willing to buy tokens. The sale certainly suffered from how complicated the buying process turned out to be. John Keefe, a writer at Quartz who wanted to invest in the project, described his experience in an article for Nieman Lab, “How to buy into journalism’s blockchain future (in only 44 steps).”

Catherine Tucker, an MIT economist who has paid close attention to the rise of blockchain, said that she thought Civil had a targeting issue.

“Ultimately the ideal customer is someone who knows enough about crypto to get through the token-buying test and cares enough about journalism to not mind that the token is restricted in its use,” she said. “I suspect that it is a small intersection of the population.”

Civil Media's token sale has failed
Civil Media's ambitious plans for journalism suffered a big setback this week.

I understand crypto currency & blockchain blah blah blah, but I never really understood this effort. Perhaps the reboot will be less complicated? Here's hoping for @Join_Civil & journalism!

Perhaps the biggest problem is that the project is bad. Just like the vast majority of all the latest ICOs that have been released. This can and should be compared to the beginning of the internet where many felt that the great value of a company was in their domain name, even when there was no solid company behind.

You probably used a pool, and it was probably slushpool. Try to login with an email you used at that time. Sometimes they can have details that help you remember some other place that you may have kept your keys. Or at least how much you mined. It may also be that in this old email you may have kept the keys to the wallets. They are small files and most of the time we make several copies.

I do not believe that a decentralized currency such as Bitcoin will have the potential to replace the entire monetary base of a currency like the Euro. It would be a very big change of paradoxes. Only if it were the result of an armed revolution or something like that.

Now, I see with good eyes and possibilities that they can coexist. And maybe even a new coin with Bitcoin-like features might emerge. And Bitcoin can continue to be an excellent alternative to traditional and centralized monetary policy.

I also believe that Bitcoin can be a great alternative for more fragile nations. Contributing decisively to an increase in international trade and tourism of countries with weak currencies and economies.
850  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why is Bitcoin so stable in price after a big drop? on: November 03, 2018, 10:46:14 PM
People stopped selling. What exists today are just traders filling in the Books and the coins that come in after being mined. But the volume, at various times, is very low, which opens up the possibility for short gains with Bots. But soon it is stabilized, with attempts of those who have suffered a momentary loss to make average price

The change will only occur with institutional money or with some high utilization that goes beyond speculation. Few want to use as currency since most believe that we are on a down and sell now would be a loss. Markets today are more liquid too. We have several arbitration tools that correct any distortion within minutes.

A year ago, in Brazil, we had no more than 8 exchanges. Today it is over 60. But none has a direct link with other financial instruments. I believe that this does not yet exist in the world. In the stock market, you have money in stocks but can quickly turn into another financial instrument. Most people will always feel insecure without those opens on cryptocurrencies. A little more legal and financial security will be needed to increase the real volume and break down traders who are using low volume to accumulate or to sell their Bitcoins in the best price.

Blockchain is a more universal term than cryptocurrency. It is a less translated term for local languages and much more used as a brand or definition of projects in several areas.

Can I still hold my PRL on exchanges?

I do not believe that any serious exchanges will keep the PRL wallet if the trading is kept frozen for a few months. You should immediately read the exchange announcements where you have PRL and follow their recommendations.
853  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why did not the price go up with the announcement of Tether? on: November 03, 2018, 09:25:09 PM
Tether didn't prove anything other than they have $1.8 billion in an account. There is no guarantee from the bank that the money will stay in the account for any length of time or where it came from. It could be a short term loan for all we know. There is also no guarantee that the money is not encumbered by some other financial derivative.

I have not thought about it. I do not know the legal aspects of derivatives of that jurisdiction, but that seems to me to be more of a bank matter than Tether. In the letter, the bank states that the portfolio is equivalent to such a value, but does not discriminate the formation of this portfolio.

Could this portfolio include other non-cash assets? Or maybe loans?
854  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why did not the price go up with the announcement of Tether? on: November 03, 2018, 05:49:57 PM
Because there is no relation between Tether and Bitcoin See this topic I posted a while back Tether Has No Real Impact on Bitcoin price https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5036107.msg46075593#msg46075593 (There is an academic study by a university researcher debunking the claims. It used VAR model (Vector autoregression) The study claims there is not any strong evidence between Thether and the Bitcoin's rally in 2017) People were maybe waiting for another bank that one located in The Bahamas lol .....

My question is more related to the psychological aspect. There was uncertainty and fear that the Tether could be imploded and several exchanges would encounter liquidity problems. It would be catastrophic.

Proved that dollar reserves exist, investors would have a bit more security and could invest more.

This study is very interesting, but it proves that there was no bubble and that prices had not inflated by Tether/Bitfinex. That is, this study plus the reserves in this bank, some reaction we should have observed in the market.

But. of course, this bank may not be reliable and this is the reason for price stability.
855  Economy / Trading Discussion / Why did not the price go up with the announcement of Tether? on: November 03, 2018, 05:04:35 PM
Tether has formally announced its agreement with a bank in the Bahamas 2 days ago. This bank demonstrated that Tether has all the monetary reserves necessary to backed the value of 1 dollar per token. I think there was something wrong with them, since in the last weeks they have greatly diminished the circulating tokens by burning some. But today it is proven that the dollars are insured in a bank. This was one of the biggest fears that USDT was just dust.

Would it not be right to expect the price to rise?

856  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Combine stoploss and take profit on binance. on: November 03, 2018, 06:15:18 AM
Send another email to them requesting it. Binance is still missing several tools of trade. It is far from being the best in options for trade. They are still focused on creating the best ecosystem for anyone before having more tools that are common in other exchanges.
857  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: BTC Prices Predicting Software on: November 03, 2018, 06:00:01 AM
Are you saying some software that uses graphs and indicators like RSI? Or software that collects information and forecasts the market with the use of AI?

There are several softwares in the traditional stock market. But none of them has great efficiency without the help of human professionals.

A tool that was launched this year and is highly praised is the Alpaca Forecast AI Prediction Matrix, by bloomberg. It is a revolutionary tool. But you see, it was only released this year for the traditional market. I do not think we have anything like it in the Cryptos market.
858  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: IDEX users are waiting for forced verification on: November 02, 2018, 11:54:43 PM
The advantage of IDEX platforms is that you have your funds in your wallet. But it is still a platform with owners, with a company. And, therefore, it must follow the regulations imposed by the governments. I believe we are very far from having a 100% decentralized platform. Something like this would be expensive to trade and difficult to use.

Still, DEx trading platforms have great advantages over traditional platforms where you do not have full control over your wallet.
859  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: .0023 sell every 20 seconds on Coinbase on: November 02, 2018, 11:49:49 PM
You could film this trading. Take prints. It's obvious it's a bot. That is unquestionable. But the debate over why he chooses to sell that amount every twenty seconds is quite interesting. At least for me. And if it is something continuous, that occurs for so long, it is a whale trying to prevent the price from falling more. Maybe it's a miner that needs to sell steadily the coins he mines.
I imagine there are several other bots with similar actions piling up too.
860  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [ BAT ] ANN Basic Attention Token Speculation on: November 02, 2018, 10:30:22 PM
Basic Attention Token (BAT) is launching on Coinbase Pro
Transfer BAT now to your Coinbase Pro account in advance of trading.

BAT is launching on Coinbase Pro
After 1pm PT on Friday, November 2, we will begin accepting inbound transfers of Basic Attention Token (BAT) to Coinbase Pro. We will accept deposits for at least 12 hours prior to enabling trading. Once sufficient liquidity is established, trading on the BAT/USDC order book will start. Users may convert their USD to USDC with one click within the Pro interface as described here. BAT trading will be accessible for users in most jurisdictions, but will not initially be available for residents of the state of New York.

Please also note that BAT is not yet available at Coinbase.com or in our iOS and Android apps. We will make a separate announcement when that occurs.

The Stages of the BAT Launch
In more detail, there will be four stages to the launch as outlined below. If at any point the BAT/USDC order book does not meet our assessment for a healthy and orderly market, we may keep the book in one state for a longer period of time, or suspend trading as per our Trading Rules. Any other BAT order books we launch will also go through the same stages.

We will send tweets from our Coinbase Pro Twitter account as each order book moves through the following phases:

Transfer-only. Starting at 1pm PT on Friday, November 2, customers will be able to transfer BAT into their Coinbase Pro account. Customers will not yet be able to place orders and no orders will be filled on these order books. Order books will be in transfer-only mode for at least 12 hours.
Post-only. In the second stage, customers can post limit orders but there will be no matches or completed orders. Order books will be in post-only mode for a minimum of one minute. This market state has been shortened to increase market health during launch.
Limit-only. In the third stage, limit orders will start matching but customers will not yet be able to submit market orders. Order books will be in limit-only mode for a minimum of ten minutes.
Full trading. In the final stage, full trading services will be available, including limit, market, and stop orders.
One of the most common requests we receive from customers is to be able to trade more assets on our platform. With the recent announcement of our new listing process, our customers can expect us to list most assets over time that meet our standards.

The price went up thanks to a whale buying the whole book. But we will probably have a continued purchase with more people buying. As happened with the 0x.
Next to the list XLM, Zcash and Cardano (ADA)
