921  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Difference between Limit and Market button on: May 15, 2021, 05:05:48 AM
Could there ever be an error when doing a limit or market order?  Example you want to buy or sell btc at around a certain price... let say current price is around 50k and you want to market sell it right now or limit order sell at say 55k.  I assume limit order is impossible... but market order possible?  Like imagine someone put an offer to buy btc at 50k but current price is 55k.  Then you accidentally put limit order to sell at 20k.  What happens here?  That buyer offering to buy at 50k can't buy your btc at 20k right?

Thing is i know with sportsbetting in an exchange, if you offer the wrong odds by accident and someone takes your odds... then i believe you are screwed because you are offering the odds.  But in exchanges for crypto, is this possible?  I heard its not in the big exchanges but if its not the big ones... then you screwing up is your fault?  Like imagine you put i want to sell one btc at 20k and someone see that offer or bot sees it, it immediately buys it?
922  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Best Second Hardware Wallet To Buy? on: May 15, 2021, 04:45:31 AM
Okay this is going to sound like a very stupid question but i need to ask.

My current nano ledger s, i have coins stored there and accounts are shown on ledger live.

If i get another nano ledger s... then restore my current nano ledger seed into the new nano ledger s... then i will have access to my coins.  But when I do this, do i even need to delete those accounts on ledger live and re-add them or that is completely unnecessary if that seed i enter is 100 percent the seed connected to it?  So one could just sent/receive with no issue just like that?

Also people say its always a good idea to get a backup hardware wallet such as another nano ledger s or x in case your current one breaks so you don't need to wait to order another one.

But when people get an extra hardware wallet for backup, does it make sense to restore the current nano ledger seed to it as well?  So if anything happens to your current nano ledger s, well now you have access to your backup hardware wallet... but not only that... you can just enter the pin to it without needing to get your seed?  Compare that to going to get your backup nano ledger s... then having to type in the seed in order to access your coins?  Do you people with an extra hardware wallet... just let it sit there in your drawer and not activate it... or do you put your seed in it?  I guess one negative is if you somehow mistake one nano s for another, then you going to put the wrong pin down right on your first try?

923  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: What do you do with the Hardware Wallet Box? on: May 15, 2021, 03:48:59 AM
What is the best way to get rid of the box?  Do you all just cut it into pieces and then toss it in different trash cans?  I guess you could do what someone said and toss some in different public trashcans when you are out in public and thats better than dumping it in your trash can?

Anyone used a paper shredder for this?  That probably would be better?

Also just thought about this.  But if you had those seed cards where you could write your seed there, those should also be destroyed right?  Its like those cards are literally labeling... hardware wallet nano ledger etc.
924  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Claiming Bitcoin SV on: May 15, 2021, 12:54:17 AM
Okay so im finally going to do this soon as i put this off for a long time.

Now, i do have access to a desktop computer so i dont have to use my main laptop to download these two programs.  Its an old windows desktop that i wiped clean a while back but not one hundred percent sure if i wiped it clean fully the right way.

Would you say better to try downloading both electrumg and electrumsv on this old desktop to claim bitcoin gold and bitcoin sv as oppose to my main laptop windows computer?  I know when i downloaded electroncash to claim my bch on my main windows laptop, there was no issue.  I immediately moved the bch to nano ledger s and never used electroncash ever since though i still have program on laptop.

Would you suggest starting with bitcoin gold first... thus electrumg?  Since the value of bitcoin gold is lower than electrumsv... then start with it in case?  Thus since bitcoin sv is worth more, don't try with it?

And i mentioned i already moved my coins from electrum already... so the electrum seed i enter... would be fine.

The other thing is this.  Where do i send the bitcoin SV when i claim it?  With bitcoin gold, i can send it to nano ledger.  The thing is on coinbase... i do see i have some tiny bit of bitcoin sv there from a fork because a while back, i had tiny bit of btc there and they gave me tiny bit of bitcoin cash and sv as fork.  But bitcoin sv isn't supported on coinbase so i can't send bitcoin sv there.  Though i see i could send my bitcoin sv from coinbase to another site.  And speaking of that... how come i don't have any bitcoin gold in my coinbase wallet?  If i had a tiny bit of btc a while back where it gave me bitcoin cash and bitcoin sv... shouldn't a tiny amount of bitcoin gold still should be there like how bitcoin sv is there?
925  Economy / Exchanges / Coinbase Accounts Hacked Threads on Reddit? on: May 14, 2021, 05:32:06 AM
So I been checking reddit lately and coinbase and everyday, there is literally multiple threads about people getting hacked.  I did read lot of these threads and most of these issues seem to be on the user's side where they make mistakes with their security.  But how often is anything on coinbase's end?  I mean everyday you see multiple threads of people saying their got their coins hacked.

In cases like these, I assume coinbase is never responsible right?  I mean let say someone had no coins in coinbase but only usd funds.  Let say they had 5 digits worth of usd.  If a hacker bought coins and then sent it to their own wallet, that means the user of the account is screwed right?  But i heard something like usd is insured by coinbase... but this is not what they mean right?  I assume that insurance is only if coinbase itself got hacked or they go down etc?

Now what about people who send their coins to coinbase vault for storage?  If that happens, do accounts still get hacked?  I heard if you keep coins there, you cant withdraw for two whole days... so wouldnt that mean if a customer got hacked, they could then contact coinbase within that time period so hacker can't withdraw during that time frame?  But the other issue is doesnt coinbase take a while to reply back to emails and thus by that, the hacker could have got into the account?
926  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Firmware Update Questions on: May 14, 2021, 05:25:03 AM
I see one of the threads here is locked so i can't post in the thread.

I was going to update to the new firmware few days ago but didn't because my internet has been down/lagging issues and im still trying to get it fixed.

1.  What happens if your internet goes out when you doing a firmware update?  Any chance it bricks?  Or does it just not go through and you can do it again?  Anyone here would even try upgrading firmware if their internet isn't stable?

2.  I have done previous firmware updates before and recall one of the earlier ones I did, i had that bootlogger mcu issue a while back.  But do things like this still happen with the firmware updates now?

3.  I recall they do ask you to confirm the identifier number is correct during this process.  Has there ever been a case of where that number wasn't displaying the same number on your nano ledger screen?

4.  What happens when you update much older firmware like 1.5 all the way to firmware 2.0?  Does it just by pass 1.6.1?  Does it increase chances of a an issue in the update?

5.  I'm curious but anyone here still using old firmware and by that i mean using firmware before 1.6.1?  I know people say you should always update to the new firmware when its available but anyone here still using old firmware but have no issues using it with ledger live?  I assume if you continue to use old firmware and continue to use ledger live... you might have synchronizing issues or things like that until you do next firmware?

927  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Two Factor Authorization on Coinbase on: May 13, 2021, 06:04:42 PM
But it then asked me to log in with my google authenticator.  That would mean i had to have used google authenticator as my two factor authorization years ago right since it asked me for that when trying to log in?
If they asked you to enter the 2FA code, it clearly means that you had enabled 2FA.

So right now i changed my two factor from sms phone number to google authenticator.  But what if i then change it back to sms phone number?  I then change it back to google authenticator.  Then i do those steps you listed with the three dot menu?  Then once i have that, i will get QR codes?
In the case you disable 2FA and enable it again, you can simply save the set-up key this time and keep it in a safe place.

Then i do those steps you listed with the three dot menu?  Then once i have that, i will get QR codes?  But i need to take picture of it as backup?  That doesn't make any sense.  So there isn't something like a coinbase key where its a long number/word similar to like binance/bittrex?
When you export your account via google authenticator application, you don't need Coinbase setup key.
The QR code can be used to backup all accounts at a same time.
Note that by using "export account" feature, You actually backup the google authenticater not your coinbase account individually. It can include all the accounts you have.

Do you always get the same qr code with your authenticator or it generates a new one each time?
If you select same account(s), you will get a same QR code.

Okay so now i just changed my two factor back to sms phone number for now.

Now when i change it back to google authenticator as my two factor authorization, i do the steps you listed.  So i have to take a picture of the QR code on ANOTHER PHONE as my backup to this phone?  Most people only have one phone and im shocked this is the way to do it.   Years ago, did coinbase do the same thing with the backing up of it?  Such as you needed to take picture of the QR code?  So they never had a recovery key like binance or bittrex?

So could one take a picture of the QR code on the same phone using right now.  Then say keep a copy of it stored in the cloud as the backup?  I can't imagine people needing another phone to take the picture of the QR code for security reasons.  Then again you taking a photo of the QR code on your current phone wouldn't make any sense since if something happens to this phone, then well you don't have that backup code.  I do have key for both binance and bittrex that i wrote down though.  So this QR code with coinbase is only with coinbase or it can show my other current QR codes with binance and bittrex?  That is confusing part because i thought coinbase was like... you write a key down and make sure you have that key in case something happens to your phone.
928  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Two Factor Authorization on Coinbase on: May 13, 2021, 05:15:51 PM
Now my question is... is there some code i need to write down in case my phone breaks or i lose my phone etc?
If you have saved the setup key (or the corresponding QR code), there is nothing to worry about. That key can be used to recover your account in future.

If you haven't saved that key, you can backup the google authenticator using the "export account" feature.

To do so,
    1. Tap on menu button (the 3-dot button) at top of the screen.
    2. Select "transfer accounts".
    3. Select "Export accounts".
    4. Check your coinbase account and any other account you wish to backup.

After doing steps above, you will get two QR codes. These QR codes can be used for accessing your account(s) in future.
Note that your phone won't allow you to get screenshot due to security reasons and you will have to use another phone to take photo from the screen.

Okay so i like to comment on this.  A long time ago, I used a phone that had google authenticator as my two factor authorization i believe.  I think i first used an sms number first and then changed it to that.  Years later on, my phone didn't work.  When i tried to log into coinbase with my username/password, it sent me a code to my phone.  I still had this phone number though even though my old phone stopped working.  But it then asked me to log in with my google authenticator.  That would mean i had to have used google authenticator as my two factor authorization years ago right since it asked me for that when trying to log in?

But I did not have that coinbase key saved.  So i didn't log in for a while until i tried a bit later on.  Coinbase was then able to unlock my account because i still had the phone number connected to my coinbase account.  Then i can log in with my username/password and it send code to my phone number each time before i can log in.  I believe if u dont have your phone number connected to account, then its much harder to access the old coinbase account right?

So right now i changed my two factor from sms phone number to google authenticator.  But what if i then change it back to sms phone number?  I then change it back to google authenticator.  Then i do those steps you listed with the three dot menu?  Then once i have that, i will get QR codes?  But i need to take picture of it as backup?  That doesn't make any sense.  So there isn't something like a coinbase key where its a long number/word similar to like binance/bittrex?

Do you always get the same qr code with your authenticator or it generates a new one each time?

Example had i saved the code from a while back with my phone, it isn't the same as the one they give me now right?
929  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: 🔷 Waves Tech - a powerful blockchain-agnostic ecosystem on: May 13, 2021, 05:05:28 PM
How long has USDN been out?   What about with the waves client?

Also, what is the cheapest way to turn whatever funds you have into usdn?  When I click on swap waves for usdn, seem to charge a 0.005 waves fee which is cheap.  But it also includes a protocol fee that is 2 percent?
So it cost around 2% or so to swap waves to usdn and vice versa?/

But if you swap say waves for usdt, it cost you 0.003 waves.  Then going from usdt to usdn, it cost you another 0.003 waves.  So if my math is correct here, you going to save basically the whole 2% or so if you do it this way... versus just trading waves for usdn and vice versa which shows nder the swap waves/usdn tab under trading?

But if you instead do the above and click on usdn... and trade waves for usdn directly... its flat 0.003 waves fee.

Can someone explain this?  So basically if you go to trading and click spot trade... then trade whatever coin you have directly for usdn, you going to pay very little fees for transaction?  Thus only 0.003 waves fee only?
930  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Two Factor Authorization on Coinbase on: May 13, 2021, 04:38:50 PM
I see the other option for two factor is security key.  What is that?  Is that typing it everytime to log in?  It shows it is secure just like authenticator.

But for google authenticator which im using now, is there some key i need to write down or something in case i dont have access to my phone anymore?
931  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Two Factor Authorization on Coinbase on: May 13, 2021, 04:37:18 PM
So i logged into coinbase and they ask me to change it from sms phone number to another forum.  I picked google google authenticator as i used it before with other sites.

Now my question is... is there some code i need to write down in case my phone breaks or i lose my phone etc?

How do i access my account if i no longer have my phone?
932  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 25th Word in Nano Ledger S on: May 12, 2021, 07:09:43 PM
Ok so this topic has now went off topic since it was about the 25th word.

So in summary, don't do this unless you are for sure you know what you are doing right?  I did read someone on reddit mention when they restored their seed... and then their seed with the 25th word, it somehow showed that account as not hidden but like another account under the regular pin and people said you must have created another account under the regular pin and not under the 25th word.

I know people say the more you complicate things, the more things can go wrong etc.  If I had an extra nano ledger s with me now, i would definitely test this..  But having one device, im concerned something can go wrong etc.
933  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 25th Word in Nano Ledger S on: May 12, 2021, 05:34:01 AM
I'm well aware of something going wrong.  Whether you forget it or something happens and lose your memory.

So that is why i thought putting seeds broken in two pieces in two separate safe deposit boxes seem to be the best method.  The only main concern is if like the government go and seize your boxes.  Then you are screwed.  I mean with a thief or bank employee... all they going to get is one seed.  They can't do anything with that.  Unless they go after your second seed.  How they going to know that especially a thief?  Now some weird and almost unlikely scenario is if that bank manager/employee finds out you have a safe deposit box at another bank... and their friend or someone they know works at that bank and then tries to get in that box.  But the odds of anything like that is almost remotely impossible.  So its like if the government seizes your things, then you are screwed.

I get what you mean with whitelisting addresses not giving you financial freedom.

Well i did notice on reddit on coinbase, tons of people everyday seem to file complaints and complain they are hacked.  I had no idea of this.  Did any of you aware of this?  Literally, theres complaints everyday of accounts getting hacked.  In those cases, all the customers are screwed right since its not coinbase fault but the customers negligence?

Well a consideration I thought was if you want to store your coins long term in exchange, you could do it with coinbase and their vaults.  That way if anything happens, i believe you have up to two days or so to do something about it because with vaults on coinbase, you can't withdraw for two days and they do more security checks etc.

934  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Update Ledger Nano S Firmware v2.0.0 on: May 12, 2021, 05:25:31 AM
I'm not going to do this, but if you were to remove the apps before you do firmware update, after the update, you obviously have to re-add the apps.  But you wouldn't have to add any accounts right?

Also did anyone here notice any issue with the firmware even after the update?  HCP mentions it went really smooth and I believe a while back when he did previous update, it reset his nano ledger s.  I read on reddit.. like the screen loading time is a bit slower and things like that.

But do you find this update to the new firmware better than the one before it?  Deciding whether to upgrade soon or not or wait but if i wait, good chance i might not be able to update the firmware in 6 months maybe since i might not have my seed with me.
935  Economy / Exchanges / Two Factor Authorization on Coinbase on: May 11, 2021, 07:09:01 AM
I have my phone number as my two factor authorization.  Always heard google authenticator or authy is best since it prevents sim swap etc.

How does one change their two factor authorization from phone number to google authenticator?  Also when you do this, they give you coinbase private key that you need to make sure you write down right in case something happens to your phone?
936  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 25th Word in Nano Ledger S on: May 11, 2021, 05:39:51 AM
Well it went from remembering just your email/cloud username/password and your password manager password.... to now remembering three different usernames and password manager password.  The passwords for those three different emails would be written down etc... but anyone who finds it... wouldn't have a clue what email its linked to.

I mean... if you have three separate emails that you used... or you create them... wouldn't you say its kind of hard to forget your email if say two of them you use you been using for years?  Hard to forget those emails don't you agree?  Of course you have to remember one new email.  But yea higher chance of data loss this way etc.

And yea... the password manager password would be same for all three though.  Yea i think this is getting more complex... but it would be more safe than the way i talk about etc.  Well that does seem good for someone who has a mobile lifestyle... you have to agree on that right?  I mean... look at those ppl who travel a lot and use crypto for everything.  Storing it in cloud would make sense since they have it anywhere they go without losing a paper... but yea online risk is very high.

Well obviously keeping it simple is the best.

But the fact is for you to say almost every single way of storing your seed... you could think of at least 5 bad things about it... makes it really tough.

I also found out about coinbase vaults recently.  You obviously are completely against this right?  For some reason i think this is very good idea because i read you could whitelist addresses etc.  And thus you dont need to ever remember your seed or write it down.

Also as long as you submit your documents, coinbase more often than not would reactivate your account.

937  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Update Ledger Nano S Firmware v2.0.0 on: May 11, 2021, 05:32:53 AM
Also are you suppose to remove the coin apps before you do the firmware update?
No.

With a hardware wallet, I plug it into an online device hooked to their own software, and all I can do is hope it does what they say. That's not "verify, don't trust" at all!
Do you verify the microcode for your CPU? or your mobo BIOS? your harddrive firmware? Have you verified all the code in your OS? Huh If you use Bitcoin Core, have you actually verified all the code in that app? What about Electrum or <insert whatever wallet you use>? Huh

Yes, I'm being facetious, but the point is that at some point in the chain you're no doubt trusting someone...

"Don't trust, verify" is nice in theory... incredibly difficult to implement 100% though.

Quote
That brings me to my main concern: even if the device can be trusted now, would it be possible for Ledger to create a firmware that broadcasts private keys? I'm hoping this is a very dumb question and it's completely impossible.
I'd hesitate to say "impossible"... because #famousLastWords... "unlikely" is probably a better description. The makers of Ledger Live are well known. They're not some "semi-anonymous" internet folks living in parts unknown.

I would think the thought of ending up in the French prison system would be enough to deter them from doing someone as stupid as that.

HCP, wasn't with the older firmware updates, we had to delete the apps first on the nano ledger before the firmware update?  I thought i remember doing that before.

I assume back then we did, but now we don't?

Also if we don't have to remove the coin apps before the firmware update, that means we don't need to add coin apps to it afterward right?  I am going to do the firmware update later today.  I did check reddit and lot of people mention they had issues with it though like ledger live etc.
938  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Storing Cryptocurrency in Coinbase Vault Vs Hardware Wallet? on: May 11, 2021, 05:25:32 AM
So I heard not only with the coinbase vault, you could also whitelist addresses.  Opinion on this?
939  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: DOGELON, AKITA & SHIB coin Speculation. HIGH RISK HIGH RETURN! on: May 11, 2021, 04:19:28 AM
So these coins just suddenly showed up on coinmarketcap.  When did shiba coin even came about?
940  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 25th Word in Nano Ledger S on: May 10, 2021, 06:12:54 PM
The extending your seed thing... i know its an advanced step but for some reason i just dont feel comfortable doing it with one device for some reason.
No one is forcing you to do it. You are the one putting unnecessary pressure on yourself to have a passphrase while you are still struggling with the basics.

Are you people storing passphrase in different location from your seed then?  Yea i know you should always write passphrase down just in case.  So its like you need to make sure this word is far away from your seed?
Yes, they have to be separate one from the other. There is no purpose in having a passphrase to prove an additional layer of security if that security can be compromised by finding both the seed and passphrase on the same paper.

But the way people say keep multiple backups, it seems like ppl say just backup your seed in multiple usb sticks encrypted etc.
No one has said or recommended that to you. But for some reason, your brain understands tips like don't store your seed online or in a digital format as keep your seed on a password manager or USB drive

But someone mentioned you could also put it in a airtight container with those gel packs to keep moisture out so thats a way to protect it.
Or even better, don't store your seed on a USB drive.

Yea human memory is bad and will fail.  I got to wonder... what percentage of ppl actually remember the password in their head?
For the love of God, how would HCP or anyone else possible know that?

I also just thought about one last idea.  I know you going to hate it because well its an online cloud solution.  But you get a brand new computer or wiped computer... download password manager.  Enter half your seed on it.  Then upload it to dropbox or gmail.  Then you do the same thing with the other half of the seed in another password manager but do this with another dropbox/gmail of yours.  Then to make it even more secure, get a passphrase and put that in a different password manager copy.  While you are doing this, make sure this device is a brand new or wiped laptop.
That's the way to do it, please do that.

The only thing is you need to make sure you never forget your three email addresses and passwords and of course your password manager password.  That isn't that bad right?
No, it's revolutionary. Why memorize just one passphrase, when you can memorize 3 email addresses and their 3 passwords + the password of your password manager.

Do you see a flaw with this though?
None, whatsoever. It's so fulfilling to see that you have adopted so much knowledge in all these years. You were just a baby when you came here, and no you are ready to take on the world.

Well if whatever method i have is working now... wouldn't you say still do it?  I had my seed stored in password manager uploaded to the cloud for many years... with no issue.  Of course anything could happen to it.  The main concern for me would be downloading malware/keylogger because if that happens, my whole laptop is compromised and anything I type in etc... is viewable to hacker.

I actually would put a passphrase now... if say I just got a nano ledger the first time or if I got replacement nano ledger.  But a concern of mine now is buying another nano ledger since well they have that ledger leak etc.  Though that shouldn't matter since i already bought a nano ledger a while back from ledger since its already in their database?  You would agree typing your passphrase in password manager as another copy would certainly be fine right?

When you say if you have passphrase, you need to make sure its separate from your seed.  By that, you mean like not in the same location such as the piece of paper next to each other?  Or you mean make sure passphrase and seed are not the in the same apartment/house?  Would you say its fine for seed in one location of house... passphrase in another location?

Well besides piece of paper, it seems almost everyone says storing it in encrypted usb stick seem to be either the second or third most popular way.  That is from looking at people responses which is why I say this.
I mean storing it in password manager and putting it in encrypted usb drive is what people mean right?  Because I do that with copy of my password manager on the usb.  However, I didn't encrypt the usb though... but password manager is encrypted.

Well I think trying to remember your seed is the most foolish thing one can do.

Well that new idea i thought about... I'm not really sure what flaws there are.  Three different emails and three different passwords with two seeds in two of the emails... and passphrase in last email and remember this is done in three different password managers.  By that, i do mean same password program though like 1password or keepass.    You write those passwords down on piece of paper to have multiple copies of it.  Then you make sure you remember three emails... and make sure you remember your password manager password.  You aren't trying to remember those three passwords as well.  And only log into those email accounts only when you going to access your seed and only do this on a machine that does not do anything else.  Thus anytime you need access to your seed... you do this and log into your three emails to get it.  Then log out.  You do not visit any sites you are not sure of.  Heck don't even visit youtube etc.  And if something happens to that computer, completely wipe it new or get a brand new computer etc.  Of course that computer would be connected to the internet as oppose to airgap.
