921  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anyone following the ebola outbreak? on: August 02, 2014, 07:07:34 AM
I hope governments take this seriously. All people coming from this infected areas shall be mandatory quarantine for 30 days. If this disease will spread to a big cities in America or Europe. This is very catastrophic given mortality rate of this disease. And this virus has a very big chance to mutate to become airborne like the bubonic plague.

I see Ebola has already claimed it's first victim - your mind.

1) It does not have a very big chance to mutate.  Where are you getting this from. Do you even know what classification of pathogen it is?
2) Bubonic Plague is now spread via airborne transmission rather than rodent/tick vector?

Feel free to comment on how bad it is, but don't spout off facts that are anything but  Roll Eyes

Before you go yelling at the OP did you consider you made a mistake?  Try deleting the wallet.bin file and having the wallet resync and see if it finds the coins.  If you didn't include a fee then the coins never got send on the chain.

Yep, that's the one I'm talking about on Ozcoin.  11.79 times difficulty.  A lot of users ran away from Ozcoin when that happened because of the hack and another nasty block a day earlier.  People will do irrational things out of fear sometimes (as if you can escape bad luck).

if Deepbit had an 18x block, that would be pretty darn painful.  It's before my time (2011).
924  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: IS GHASH.IO Cheating Miners? Paying LESS THAN 50% of expected? on: August 02, 2014, 06:16:56 AM
It's called variance, and you cannot escape it - no matter which pool you run to.

Ghash has had bad luck for the last 2-3 days (look at the 3 and 4 hour blocks).  On top of that the network speed has grown but ghash hasn't, so it's share of the network went down.

No pool is able to avoid variance.  Use CGminer to load balance your shares across multiple pools and decrease your variance further.
925  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: New to Bitcoin need rig for college (don't pay electricity fee) on: August 02, 2014, 06:09:50 AM
The heat and noise issue can vary from roommate to roommate. My freshman year, I ran two gaming machines 24/7 and my roommate didn't mind at all, minus his requests for me to turn the LEDs off at night. However, the power consumption can become an issue. Running those two desktops as well as an assortment of other electronics, I tripped the breaker for room several times, requiring me to call maintenance to reset it every time. The following year, I lived in a on-campus house (actual house and not dorm) and did not have any problems running any extent of power.

For those saying we are stealing....I don't think its stealing if we are being charged $60K+ a year, especially when housing is overpriced, to use an additional few hundred dollars of power....the quote of a poor college student LOL

It's not stealing if you're running 1 unit since many students use their PCs and other equipment to fund their income as a student.  Students who do makeup and  spa-work in their dorm use hairdryers and lights.  People who run a website use the bandwidth and electricity.

The problem arises if you plug in 5, 10, 15 miners and are pretty much there to make an income rather than learn - then you are violating the housing agreements.

This is all irrelevant to a roomate who will put things in your bed if he/she is unhappy with you...check your toothbrush before putting it in your mouth.
926  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining still worth it? Should I get in now? Here is my situation. on: August 02, 2014, 06:05:50 AM
Since BTC price is sub $600 and your electricity rates are above $0.10 I would suggest buying BTC at this point.  Even the S3 would be very borderline profit if not negative.  You can always use the purchased BTC to buy miners later if another miner comes out at a good pricepoint, but for you the electricity is an issue.
927  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: A1 miner is it good on: August 02, 2014, 06:02:37 AM
Not really a good deal considering you can buy 2 new Antminer S3 miners for 1.25BTC which is about $700 and they will do about 900GH/s but they will only use 700W (you need to supply a PSU).  Since they use less power they will be more profitable if you have more expensive electricity.  I think the calculator assume $0.10/KWH - is that your rate?

929  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you really earn more money because you went to college? on: August 02, 2014, 05:35:04 AM
Back of the napkin math -
Start working 2000 hrs/yr @ 16 years old taking home $30k (assuming no taxes since with credit/deductions you can go +/-). By age 36 you make 20x$30k = $600k (skipping interest).

If you do a cardiology fellowship after medschool/residency you will have worked for 6 years making $35k/yr (salaried resident so no minimum wage bonus for you) which let's say for the sake of argument would cover your student loans (not if you went private but we'll average it out with state schools). You'll make $200k/yr take home those 3 years leading up to age 36.

So by 36 the min wage adult and the cardiologist are even. Except the min wager could have a house almost paid off (possibly might even be working on house #2). Oh and the practitioner has also studied/worked about 2.5x as many hours as the min wager.

If the med school bound idiot (yes, now he is an idiot if he goes to medical school) changes to work 2 full time min wage jobs making $15/hr (assuming work is available) from age 16 he'll almost always be ahead by age 40, and if he invested wisely will have an insurmountable lead on any physician.

I bring up $15/hr since Seattle recently decided to bump up the minimum wage to that.  San Diego is considering $13/hr.

That would be great and all, but the min wage is not even close to $15/hr for most of the states.

A more accurate min wage would be $7.25(Which is what most 16 year olds will get)  So that means they will bring  home roughly 10k a year after taxes.  So with nothing after 20 years the min wage will have 200k which is a lot more accurate.

Granted, that isn't usually the case people don't sit at min wage for 20 years, they move up through the ladder and get a better job.

Students are pretty much getting screwed along with the minimum wage being way to low in order for people to pay their debts.

While numerically there may be several states that don't pay $10/hr, most urban states (where the majority of the population of the US resides) is paying well above $8.50.  CA will be $10 minimum statewide in 5 months.  The urban cities pay much higher since cost of living is higher (hence why you see $13 and $15 minimum living wages popping up).

If you do happen to live in one of those places where the minimum is $7.25 it's even easier to buy a house.  My wife live in KY for 3 years and bought a large house for $80K - same house would have cost $500K here in CA.  So even though the wage might be 1/2 as much, housing is insanely cheaper.  Electricity, heating gas and water are cheaper there too.  Only things like gasoline tend to run the same price around the country.

Either way my point is minimum wage can result in a nice nest egg if people discipline themselves like professionals going through 12 years of schooling.

Girls are a scarce product in China, pretty girls like this one, maybe as scarce as diamonds.

I agree she could be way better rewarded outside the sports, but its her choice

Scarce as Diamonds? Ummm, there are a lot of diamonds in the world.
Hell, maybe you meant to say as scarce as women in China with nice teeth. Now thats scarce  Grin

Here it goes.  Hell, you meant to say as scarce as women in England with nice teeth.  Oh I love me some Keira Knightley.

Well the kid can keep trying out the volleyball gig and if it doesn't lead to Olympic fame there's always modeling.
932  Other / Off-topic / Re: How often do you change a new phone? on: August 02, 2014, 05:17:22 AM
i buy used phones 1 or 2 generations behind.. but i'm happy with my galaxy s3, so i'll hold on to that phone for at least 1 more year. the new tech doesn't really bring much improvements, so that's the point?

Same here.  I have an s3 and it suits all my needs except I would like a bigger screen.  So I'll probably end up getting a new Note 5 and gifting my S3 to family.  I should have got the Note II back then...

Why do all those things have to be in Russia?

Why does everything have to happen in America?* Smiley

*In reference to close to all scifi movie plots.

I'm pretty sure Chupacabra and Godzilla are not American - otherwise they would be much fatter and would watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians instead of terrorizing.

So what you start doing is make a secret bank account - maybe a joint one with a friend you really trust and have that friend be primary on the account.  Put all your extra cash you have laying around in there.  Then start selling all HIS things - first sell the things you know he doesn't like and doesn't use.  He probably won't notice that.  Then you sell the small stuff he likes and keep going until the expensive things are up for sale - all the while hiding the money.  When it comes times he'll divorce you and you won't get hit with the liability/causality.

Don't get mad, get even - you're doing it for your kid.
935  Other / Off-topic / Re: For how much money would you touch/lick another person's genitals? on: August 02, 2014, 05:05:53 AM
1-4 - $86 (going Medicare rate)

5-8 - no way in hell.

When I was a medical student and intern I had to rectals on every patient I admitted to hospital even if they came in for something like heart attack.  let me tell you some people have very nasty hygiene.  I'm over it now and can keep my lunch down even with the smell of death in the room, but I'm so happy I rarely do rectals and pretty much never do pelvic exams.
936  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why do the bonds between humans and dogs/cats seem so much stronger? on: August 02, 2014, 05:01:12 AM
Humans domesticated wolves that became dogs... and dogs have learned to rely on humans and use us as much as we use them.  Some cats run in pride while other are solo predators, so cats may seem more aloof.

938  Other / Off-topic / Re: 5 weeks in a coma, is there a "realistic" chance of recovery? on: August 02, 2014, 04:56:39 AM
The coma is the human body's way to heal with traumatic injury.  Unfortunately sometimes the sensors in the brain don't go off when healing has reached a plateua and the brain just sits in a locked in state.

Unfortunately during this time the body will atrophy and the organs will age at an accelerated rate.  It's possible she might wake up again, but if after 5 weeks she had not the chance is quite low - it doesn't decrease/increase with time - only thing that changes is the peripheral body will atrophy.

940  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What service can send an email when a bitcoin payment received? on: August 02, 2014, 04:36:08 AM
I believe Coinbase will also send you an email if you receive coins.  You can send a money request from you Coinbase account and when you get the BTC it will give you a deposit notification.
