721  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie checklist: how to DYOR (and recognize scams from miles away)? on: September 05, 2020, 12:50:41 PM
A good list of steps to follow, but you did not teach beginners how to do the research, it is easy to say to verify the team, but it is difficult to determine whether the team is scam or real, except by using some techniques, so it is better to add how newbie can search by himself.

[Guide] Prevent scam!!! Some useful tools for find scam / fake ICO team

You can also add a few things to research about word plagiarism, intellectual property, website template theft, and promises that look good to be believed.

I was hoping to make a nice mix between DYOR and scam prevention, but somewhere along the way, the thread bled to death, although I thought I wrote it in an understandable and accessible way Smiley if people remain indeed interested, I'd be more than willing to re-edit it further.

Thx for the great tips.

edit: will work on edit from OP, whilst trying to keep it as short and accessible as possible
722  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can i make $100 in Bitcoin under 1 month if i start with $10 on: September 05, 2020, 12:45:46 PM
Hey everyone, I am newbie about bitcoin. I want to know Can i make $100 in Bitcoin under 1 month if i start with $10.

It seems like you're a newbie about everything. Seriously, I take my hat off for all these people who replied politely above my post.

Do you really think one could make 100.000$ out of 10.000$ in under a month with BTC? That's exactly the same as what you're actually asking. There's only one way and that's by gambling, but that condition's really not exclusively reserved for bitcoin.

My advice to you, is to not even start trading.
723  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Politicians exempt from being spied on on: September 05, 2020, 12:17:09 PM
THE BEST PART? Politicians exempt themselves from this law (Is this country really a democracy? This was not voted by the people lol)

Don't worry, no matter how many exemptions these politicians are voting for themselves for, they will be spied on anyway, or who do they think they are kidding.
724  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie checklist: how to DYOR (and recognize scams from miles away)? on: September 05, 2020, 12:00:20 PM
2020 DeFi scams are 2017-2018 ICO scams all over again... Time for a small edit and make-over of the original post. The basic message has hardly been changed at all, since the scamming methods haven't changed either.

Be aware that some people have expressed serious doubts about ALL DeFi projects, so keep your eyes peeled whenever you consider investing your hard-earned money in any of these projects.
725  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: URL and Hyperlink! on: September 05, 2020, 10:30:43 AM
Also, try to type the URL manually every time you need to access a website containing sensitive information.

I seem to remember a scam from a few years ago and I think it concerned myetherwallet.com, where the small "L" was replaced by a capital "i" - not 100% sure about the domain, but the example is the same anyway:

MyEtherWallet
and
MyEtherWaIIet are NOT the same.

In certain font styles, l and I look exactly the same, just like 0 and O etc.
726  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Earn Cryptocurrency on: September 05, 2020, 09:43:35 AM

Ask yourself this: what is the best method to earn stable $5/day in fiat money?

Now, whatever your answer may be, exactly the same thing goes for crypto currency.
727  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Legit trading courses on: September 05, 2020, 09:29:46 AM
You might want to check out www.babypips.com, intended for Forex trading (like Urban Forex mentioned above) but the principle remains the same. Free courses, info on analytics etc.

Was recommended to me by dbt1033 a few years ago on this forum. Have fun!
728  Other / Meta / Re: Legendaries need love as well. on: September 04, 2020, 06:03:25 PM
(...) I suspect that most members discredit the personal research that I have done into various health issues.

I for one do agree with a lot of your personal points of view concerning the Covid hype. It's just that I don't see any reason why I would come to the Bitcointalk forum to discuss other stuff except for crypto stuff. I see the Serious and Ivory boards also as boards where crypto stuff can be debated with people who at least try to read the whole thread and do not spam or post one-liners. It's why I post my judicial topics in there, otherwise they are spammed to off-topicness within hours. I do not see these boards as "Off-Topic for high leveled members" and I think some of the subjects you post about in Serious and Ivory are imho off-topic. Do not be offended plz, because "off-topic" is in no way synonymous of "low-quality", and I'd never claim for a second that your posts are of low quality. It's just that they are not about crypto directly (but maybe they are indirectly).

Anyway, congratz with your impressive Merit level - and if you're in lack of love with 2000+ Merits, then how do I (and others) have to feel about having "only" 400+ Merit? Cool. I'm quite sure that you're getting all the love you need. Wink Let people disagree with you from time to time. You won't be receiving Merits for certain points of view, but at least you'll keep the debating flame burning, and that's what this forum is all about.

(...) I think the price of Bitcoin is much better than what it is now.

I had no idea Heidegger and Jean-Paul Sartre were members of this forum, but this quote has kept me wandering and wondering for days now.
730  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ethereum Fees on: September 02, 2020, 08:20:32 AM
The fees to send ETH are minimum $5 in fees ... is it going to change back to "normal"?
Who dictates how much fees are charged?

If ETH is claimed to be decentralized where are those high fees coming from if not from a centralized party?!

OP, in the meantime there have been several threads on this subject, but they are in the Altcoin Discussion, which is where this thread should go, too.

I suppose you (or the mods) will move this thread, so FYI, here are some of the threads to get you your answer:

and this one:

Something I hadn't seen before: this guy posts in English but his post titles are translated (the other titles before and after his posts are not). Some badly configured translation bot? Very strange.

732  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The cost of transferring money on the Ethereum network is too high on: August 31, 2020, 12:55:38 PM
That is what happens when something gets popular, it is not as high as few weeks ago for example, you want to know why? Because ethereum got popular and the transaction costs went up super high and after a while that hype died down and now it is still higher than it used to be but lower than what it was a couple weeks ago. Do not really worry that it happened, be happy that it happens.

Because when that happens it means that there are tons of people exchanging ethereum, there are actually sooooo many people doing that it actually causes the blockchain to be clogged and you need to pay a ton more in order to get your transaction passed. That means there are people who like it and use it, that is what we want right? We want the whole world to use it, so blockchain being clogged is a popularity thing and we should be happy about it.

This is certainly not the first thread about this issue, and the big question is of course: how will you get "the whole world to use it" if you have to pay huge fees?

Basic conditions for users who are not interested in the whole blockchain behind-the-scenes story are simply: 1. is it faster than my bank? 2. is it cheaper than my bank?

It used to be faster and cheaper, but times have clearly changed (for certain coins like ETH, I mean).

I'm not saying that's a good or a bad thing (which is not the point here), but it does mean the whole world will not become more enthusiastic to use it in the current circumstances.

-snip-

Had I been a presidential candidate, surely I'd have begged you on my knees to become my VP running mate. Grin

edit: my most shocking findings from the first 20-so pages were that 1. staying on-topic was actually a rule mentioned in OP and 2. most charts, pictures, memes and so on, have disappeared for eternity's "Image Proxy: Invalid Image"...

Another important question: why do I feel as if I'm in the Ivory Tower?

Quality of discussion today has been terrific. We're allowed to veer off topic roughly speaking if there's consensus on the new topic.

Seems to me that friends1980 has been diverted from his original mission in this here thread, which was supposed to be reading the whole thread and reporting his various findings back to us on a periodic basis.

Get back to your duties, friends1980!!!!!!!    Angry Angry Angry Angry    Tongue Tongue

Got me Cheesy but eerrrm, looks like you don't read everything either, since I posted about my "mission" weeks ago already Wink

I got off to eat something about 2 hours ago, and now that I'm back, about 22 posts were added already. How the hell am I supposed to read the whole thing? Can we start a fund to provide my financial support during my reading of the complete WO? (and by the way, there was an even older WO before this one, if I'm not mistaken, so make that 2 funds)
735  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: August 30, 2020, 06:16:57 PM
enjoy myself for, say, 5-10 years, then retreat to a simpler lifestyle (after 70-75, if no LEE occurs).

Probably a good decision, but I suppose you have good insurance or social security, because what if you need extra medical treatment after 70-75 and have no private money left?

Another important question: why do I feel as if I'm in the Ivory Tower?
736  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: August 30, 2020, 05:11:26 PM
A few simple rules everyone should be doing: Don't spend more than you earn, save or invest the difference, avoid debt.

That is pretty much the only rule you need to follow to be rich. It does not really matter how much you earn. If you spend more than you earn, then you will never be rich. If you save some and try to implement you will sooner or latter see results.

Also, you need very little to be happy.

And be careful, cuz new property creates new costs: Taxes for cars and houses. Room for shoes and clothes. Electricity for smartphones and TVs. And so on.

This is where the brilliant BTC comes in. You buy it and you don't even pay banks or taxes (in theory).
737  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Cryptopia Judge: "1. Crypto is property 2. Even w/o keys, crypto remains yours" on: August 30, 2020, 04:02:49 PM
Oh! Had forgotten this kiwi attempt to fly lol.

The yank 'legal' system is meanwhile getting there https://decrypt.co/39574/not-your-keys-not-your-coins-enshrined-in-us-case-law-says-lawyer

albeit about forks not hacks, but it is a start.

I think forks are a bit of a special case, because it's a completely separate entity that decides to give assets to crypto hodlers. It creates all kinds of problems, not just legal ones. An exchange has a cold wallet for exemple, where you want it to have a significant amount of assets, in a secure way. Each time there is a fork/airdrop like that, it would need to risk that cold wallet's keys to be able to access the new coins.

@V8s: thanks for that information. I had not heard about this case and it's indeed damned interesting.

@aesma: I completely agree.

I've checked the information in the article and also double-checked the tweet to which it refers. "Not your keys, not your coins" is what the tweet says, but is not what the judgment says. "Not your keys, not your forked coins" is what the judgment says.

Doesn't mean I necessarily agree with Coinbase's policy, but that's irrelevant to the discussion. It opens a lot of new discussions ideas and legal issues.

I'll try and find a copy of the judgment and read it completely and try to analyze it. I'll keep you posted.

[For that, I'll probably open an other thread, though, as I'd like to reserve this thread for the (still on-going) Cryptopia bankruptcy procedure.]
738  Other / Meta / Re: Report plagiarism (copy/paste) here. Mods: please give temp or permban as needed on: August 30, 2020, 03:38:27 PM

A clear case of a bannable offense.

Here's a link to LoyceV's archive in case he subsequently changes the post:
https://loyce.club/archive/posts/5509/55093174.html

Guy doesn't post for 2 years, suddenly comes back a week ago, posting only shit and spam, and then even has the guts to open a thread, wondering why he doesn't get any Merit (which someone actually merited Huh). Finally plagiarizing. It doesn't get more flagrant than this.
739  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Bounties (Altcoins) / Re: 🔴[DeFi BOUNTY 125,000 DFINANCE COINS]🔴[Dfinance.co]Your Ideas Worth Money 💰 on: August 30, 2020, 03:13:13 PM
Are you sure about this, OP? If so, maybe it's time you started reporting "your" spammers, and kick them out of your campaign, because it looks like there's quite a few of them on your campaign list...
Can you give us some examples? Wink Did you try to use "report to moderator" function?

I STAND CORRECTED.

I've checked every single profile on the spreadsheet, and apart from 4-5 low quality posters (but nothing to be shocked about), I didn't find any bad boys.

Looks like a few people, like SomeJasonGuy and Subbir are wearing the signature without actually being accepted in the campaign (am I right, bounty manager?). Which explains my confusion. I suppose they're doing this pro deo. Roll Eyes Tongue I did not expect them to wear the sig without being mentioned in the spreadsheet.

So I do hope that this campaign manager will accept my apologies.

I don't report campaign spam anymore - at least, I do, but I don't spend hours cleaning up complete threads and profiles anymore. I've got almost 3000 reports now and I'm tired of members and mods having to do other people's dirty work. Some campaign managers simply spit in your face if you send them PM warning them for spammers.
