On the another note, Eduffield are you still planning to attend the New York conference?   Didn't quite get a clear picture on what your intention was due to some changes.
1342  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin (DarkSend) | No Premine | Runs 30% cooler than scryp on: March 09, 2014, 11:39:33 PM
DRK has two big issues that I see:

(1) Because the power draw is only 60% of scrypt, large GPU farms that mine altcoins and dump them for BTC/fiat have an incentive to target DRK. More profit even at price parity due to lower electricity costs. This will keep market supply high perpetually and hence keep the price low.

(2) The legions of unremarkable clone-coins will implement DarkSend once it's open-sourced. See how zero-talent "devs" are copy-pasting Vertcoin's anti-ASIC adaptive N algorithm.

For both (1) and (2) the solution is greater adoption. In the case of (1) it reduces these quasi-commercial dumpers to a smaller proportion of the market. In the case of (2), it allows DRK to achieve escape velocity and get to a point where a competing clone coin can't catch up due to lacking the network effect.

So I see "marketing" as crucial, even in the short-term. In any case, DarkSend should probably be kept closed-source before hitting at least Bter and BTC38 (not that I'm in any position to advise devs). Call it an extended mandatory beta or something. Tongue

I agree, well said.

Personally, I don't think DarkSend should ever be open sourced. All it will result in are a ton of junk coins implementing it, and basically a ton of coins piggybacking on the dev's code here. Yes, if adoption was greater, then perhaps it'd make sense to open source. But to me, adoption means something like being able to be used for actual purchases somewhere.

So if DarkCoin turned into Bitcoin, sure, consider open source. But that sort of adoption would take years. Instead, if it was me, perhaps a verified 3rd party could look at the code for safety types of reasons every so often, rather than just release all of the code for free.

If the code is released, I expect the coin to drop in price ... a lot.

At this point I absolutely agree.  We have no brand awareness and as my favorite saying goes... " never forsake the real for the ideal!"   DarkCoins world needs to be tightly branded and every kink work out.  It would be suicidal to release anything until this coin is burned into peoples mind as the "NAME" in crypto security.

No Cryptoanarchist worth their salt would put their privacy and security in trust of any software that was closed-source.  You just don't get the idea why opensource software is so much more secure than anything closed-source.
I couldn't agree more. Well put.

I fully agree...that opensource is the only option...once the branding of this coin and its features are close to prime time.  I cant speak for any others on here's business acumen, but from one such as I that has lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in having a couple of my own projects pilfered...its important to keep your cards closed. The Utopian view that others will be working for the common good would be naive.   Lets not forget...this is about business and its most certainly about dollars and cents!  Period. And there is nothing on any of these crypto coins...including this coin that with enough money thrown at it can not only be done better, but faster by any group of devs, no disrespect Evan, please.

Put our heads in the sand...and we don't value every portion of this "business" and guess what...someone will take care of your business for you.  In todays world...its a race against time.  I've paid dearly for this oversight in past...nearly the value of this whole coin combined.

Open source- yes
White hat and outside verification that this is secure and working - yes
Brand awareness - yes
PR - yes

All in due time...with a plan!

I'll be speaking at the Cryptocurrency Convention on Apr 9th in NewYork, detailing how DarkSend works and promoting DarkCoin. If anyone will be in NewYork at that time I'd love to meet you!

THIS is the type of "marketing" this coin needs.

Edu, can you talk any about what type of testing (beyond this community doing some DS transactions) you are doing? It's been mentioned before to try to let some "white-hat" types take a hammer to it... anything like that? To me, i'd like some sort of 3rd party endorsement on the anonymous transactions.

There were a few people that came into the forums and said that it wasn't anonymous and could break it, I'll reach out to them and see if they're up for taking a look at it.

I would contact forum folks carefully, too many trolls with their own coin agendas. I would use the upcoming conference as a way to network some connections. Put it in your talk or something that you are looking for a verified third-party to help confirm the coin's claims.

Again on the marketing stuff, you need to set an agenda for everyone to follow. I think there are way too many voices screaming marketing and what they are really doing is pushing DRK to be "just another coin". This coin will not succeed because there's a dice game.

IMO, these are the core elements that should always be addressed:

1. Why anonymity is important in cryptocurrencies. What are the shortcomings of the current cryptoworld (only in terms of BTC, I think discussing DRK w/ any other coin is counter-productive).

2. How does DRK solve the anonymity issue. To what extent are DRK transactions anonymous? This needs to put proven and put into an understandable diagram. Again, in my mind, this is the biggest priority for DarkSend. If everyone goes off into a tangent working on dice games or other alt-coin "standards" AND DarkSend ends up failing, then the coin will fail with it. I can't put it any more bluntly than that. So if everyone is focusing on shit like dice games and not figuring out how to validate the anonymity factor, all other effort is wasted.

3. If #2 is proven, how does DRK fit into the Crypto-World alongside BTC? Competitor/compliment?

4. Become a (or THE) Crypto-Anonymity spokesman. You get noticed by leading, not following. I think you can solve this by putting some effort into media outreach. The CryptoLife Blog did that nice piece about anonymity that featured some nice coverage of DRK, along with some other coins. So, you should do some basic PR outreach (this is where you could bring in someone from the community to help). Here's what I would do:

- Find someone you know and trust to handle all of your public relations effort. Announce it here and announce a basic PR plan with milestones. This would be something like:

A. Make a list of the top 5-10 crypto bloggers/journalists that have big enough voices in the community that it's worthwhile.
B. Have the marketing person conduct outreach saying that you are available to discuss crypto-anonymity, interviews about DarkSend and/or whatever you're planning on talking about at the conference.
C. If interviews are scheduled, always be there for them or respond promptly (if done via email). Journalists are notoriously self-centered and can take something like a perceived slight and turn it into a negative article.

4. Use your conference appearance to really build some new relationships that can help the coin's future.

-----

Again, I would implore you NOT to be distracted by these alt-clone marketing suggestions. This is the wrong place to put your attention. Develop the coin & conduct outreach to the media and NOT focusing on the crypto coin miners/traders.

Ahhh...a voice of reason!  Like it!   ++1
This is why its important to see some more senior peeps that have a broader perspective to chime in.  Its always important to lead...and I think organizer has some very valid points.  Like always...it comes down to a plan and a time line.
1344  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin (DarkSend) | No Premine | Runs 30% cooler than scryp on: March 09, 2014, 07:13:22 PM
Thanks bigrcanada!

As mentioned above I think we should get the mining pools involved to offer an auto-donation to get the foundation funded. I also think we should use a similar rewards structure as heavy, obviously with fewer coins since ours are and will be worth so much more!

eduffield can you put up a donation address for the Foundation and implement the donation option on your pool to that address? If you do it then other mining pool operators can follow suit, up until a fund ceiling of 200,000 DRK or so.

I think most miners would be happy to contribute, especially when it will go directly to the foundation and improving the awareness, development and value of the coin. It's in everyone's best interest!

+1

Completely agree.  We need a someone we all trust to hold the coins for the bounties.  It makes sense that eduffield be that person, seeing as he must have a lot of trust from us as we are all counting on his development of the coin.  I would step up myself except I'm having trouble with my wallet (on a mac, it keeps quitting).  If we can get a darkcoinfounation website or simply a bounty page added to http://www.darkcoin.io/ with an darkcoin address controlled by eduffield (or another trusted person) we can all start chipping in to pay for the bounties.  We can propose bounties here in this thread and/or over at https://www.darkcointalk.org/.  Let's do it! Smiley

I would also propose that we make a central portal for DarkCoin marketing and administration discussions such as www.darkcointalk.org or off the main site...and maybe move that away from here.

Started a Reddit thread that might be a good jumping off point, given the format. http://www.reddit.com/r/DRKCoin/comments/1zzfoz/thoughts_in_marketing_this_coin/

Ok...so here's the next most difficult part, we need to put someone in charge.  For being in charge we could again donate some DRK for someone to organize everything and be a go to person. Naturally that would be Evan, though I suspect he already has alot on his plate...maybe one of the other devs or someone that Evan can propose to be the central goto person in regards to creating a task list and moving us forward.  I immediately remove myself from a possible candidate at this time due to our heavy work season at our winery coming up.  Evan...thoughts?

This in my opinion is a very well thought out roll out.  We need to set up a bounty found ASAP and I'll donate the first 500 DRK to the fund to start with.  FYI I do not current own or have any holdings in HVC.

Thoughts?

They had a good marketing plan but failed to deliver on the actual coin.  HeavyCoins launch was a complete failure due to horrible developer support.  Take that same marketing with the excellent developer support that DarkCoin has and you have a winner for sure.  However, one issue would be the bounty's.  HeavyCoin was a huge premine so they had a very large quantity of coins to use for bounty's.  They also raised 170+ btc through an IPO which they can use for marketing as well.

Thanks Shojayxt.  I agree...Heavy's Coin is already showing some teething issues or they could be premining the hell out of it prior to release.  I've just set up an account with them to see how they move forward and see how the cpu only mining system is going to work out.

I don't think the proposal is to come out with the marching band just yet.  But we have some serious work to do with getting this coin out.  A foundation made up of pool owners and large coin holders and our devs would be a great starting point.  From this we could come out with a plan that we can build on.

Tongue

I'm game with that.   I've spent about an hour or so going through Heavy Coins information and marketing.  This has been done very well for a coin that does not offer what Evan is building with our coin.  None of what has been done at HVC is flashy marketing fluff.  Its straight forward, very clear and concise and to the point.  Clean, functional, informative and  a good solid base in understanding what it will take to support a "serious" crypto coin ecosystem.  Someone spent alot of time and thought as to HOW to navigate their ecosystem and what would be needed to support a serious coin contender in the sea of shit coins out there.  Hats off to their team.   Ultimately its going to take bounties being set up for rewarding peoples hard work....and that is where we need to start.  I purpose starting a Dark Coin Foundation made up of stake holders to help push this forward, quickly.  Please advise further.

Can more people please come join us at LotteryPool?  We have a weekly lottery from half the pool fees, which are only 1% so effectively 0.5% pool fees with the fun of a lottery to look forward to.

The owner has upgraded to a faster/more reliable server and I haven't seen any down time yet!  It's working smooth as silk ATM, so come join us!!!  The more people we have, the larger the lotto pool/winning and the funner it is to mine!!!!

Hi TanteStefana....I'll come over a spread some love!  I've only got 3 machines...as I'm still waiting on my 2 new 2x 290x machines to arrive....I'm going to want to see a calculator for that one of these days .

How did this coin just devalue?  Not sure if srs.

Yes its going downhill a bit but patience is virtue

Instead of them being rare at ~10 million coins, now we are going towards the full ~80 million, an 8 fold increase.

This fucking sucks for people like me who bought in the past week, thinking the coin was rarer than it is now. I don't plan on selling, it just sucks knowing I could have gotten more.

The specifications of this coin were always ~80 million, people always had this amount in mind when selling/buying, but in any case think about what it, does it matter at all if a coin has a cap of ~80 million to current price, if this coin is less than 2 months old and it needs maybe 50+ years to hit the 80M?

I did my due diligence before buying in, saw that the cap was changed, based my buy in price on that. Yes it does matter. This is all about risk. There is an appropriate price for each cap, and they aren't the same.

It had started out at 10 million, but was changed very early on, as it was going to be too limiting.  I was there when that change happened.  I'm not certain I agree that there is an appropriate price for each cap.  That would be a far to narrow of a view. Not to be insulting.  There are many MANY  factors I'm sure your aware of that create the value of a crypto coin....and as this ecosystem matures...will become far more inclusive of other factors other then just Market Cap.  In 5 to 10 years...80 million coins of a solid, well build and implemented coin will be nothing.  That would be like one coin for everyone in a small part of California.   It all comes down to where you personally see the currency in the future and what rule you believe it will play within the system as a whole and base your value on that.  IMHO.

The dumping on poloniex is just ridiculous to watch. People are selling like idiots once the buy walls dare rise above 10 for fuck's sake.

Its funny to watch for sure.  I don't even care. I've set my buy amount price...and walked away.  If your day trading this coin then I can see this being frustrating.  IMHO this doesn't matter in the long term.  Those of us that are true investors, and I'm not saying your not SlyA,  we look at our investments in quarters(1/4 of a calendar year) or in 12 month cycles. Other then for giggles and entertainment daily/weekly/monthly coin movements are not meaningful.  I personally have friends of mine that are serious DRK holders that in at the 50k+ range, which isn't a very sizable investment amount really, and everyone just roles their eyes.   This is a long hold for me and others in our group.  At least 2 to 3 years...what happens in 24, 48, 72 hour cycles is nothing but pure entertainment.  I'm sure edulffield is in the same mind frame.

One of things I don't understand is the Dozens of trades for for 0.7, 5.9, 10.0, 1.04DRK...$0.50 valued trades...is this some kind of trading strategy?  Is these actually human done trades for $0.50 trades?!?  If so...why?

I really hope c-cex has not been hacked. This would be pretty bad. I had a pretty decent amount on there, not my entire stash. Has anyone heard any recent news from them other than closed for 12-14 hours? If it is true, that they were hacked, I wouldn't keep any funds there. Ever

I think the speculation without sound facts is just that, speculation.  I think what we would need is to have our devs contact them, which I'm sure they have, and ask for some kind of clarity.  I too have drk there and am not happy about what is going on...though...it beats a buddy of mine with a 100BTC on Gox.   That sucks!  I know everyone is annoyed and that goes for me too.  Its a scary proposition these days to run an exchange site.  Your on everyone's radar screen...and everyone wants to hack into you.   Its an absolute nightmare I'm sure.  I'm not in ANY WAY sticking up for what may or may not be going on at c-cex.  At this point NON of us really knows what the hell is going on. sucks!

Holy smokes, the guys over a MintCoin have done a pretty good job on the website!  I don't have any mint coins for the record...but I can appreciate a smart and polished looking front end.  Any ideas how we can get something like that up and going....i've already offered 200drk as a donation towards that project.

Darkcoin has something mysterious about it...we should play that out...

I don't think "Dark" is about mysterious here. It is about confidence and security. Something reliable, math-confirmed. When you say "mysterious", I hear "hard to use, too complex, one more weird toy for tech-geeks".

Vertcoin (VTC)  Is an example of a clean design,  the website is smartphone friendly,  information is clear and concise, the logo is iconic in nature.  not a plug for the currency.  But it's simple yet quite professional in appearance.  I think this discussion should be held in conjunction with the dev team outside of a general forum panel.  Can someone start a forum for us to take this discussion into and actually really start addressing the core brand image development? thanks

I believe the logo must be totally simple and remarkable, that is easy to remember and reproduce somewhere else. I think the logo should be just a letter D with some high tech font and maybe 1 or 2 vertical line(s). The logo must be visible in a very small size, must be seen nice on any background. What you guys have shown is pretty good and will be useful, but not as a logo of a new currency.

I tend to agree. I'll put my money where my mouth is and offer 200DRK for something that is professional and powerful... if it's awe-inspiring 300DRK. Let's look at this from a very fresh new prospective.  Anything kitchey or gimmicky is may be appropriate for doge(eek) of cat or whatever awful plethora of crap coins that exist.  is there a reason why we are having to stick with this tacky coin shaped logo...?   Q2C has a great design and fresh(don't know that crypto just speaking about the design). IMHO this coin should embody the professional and sophistication of something that is worthy of doing my most trusted and sensitive not only personal but corporate transactions. Transactions such as buying real-estate, equipment to transferring wealth of your families estate type the next generation.

I think the logo is just fine...
If you want something more "professional and sophistication of something that is worthy of doing my most trusted and sensitive not only personal but corporate transactions. Transactions such as buying real-estate, equipment to transferring wealth of your families estate type the next generation. " You should change the name as well...(But please...Don't!)

Darkcoin has something mysterious about it...we should play that out...

I'm only providing ideas for thought from my own viewpoint. It will be the natural evolution of cryptocurrencies as the ecosystem matures.  Time may well prove me wrong... I don't claim to know all the the answers and I'm certainly not wanting to step on the dev toes.  All I can say is that  what we currently have does not reflect the image of a currency that potentially will have a market cap of 500 million to a billion dollar value in the next couple of years. again IMHO.
