yeah some of us want to use Darkcoin in the real world and not just for ordering mail order russian brides on TOR  Kiss

well said!  I've offered to be the first brick and mortar business to accept DRK!  Wink

Yeah I tried! I suppose at least a week before a hard fork is needed beyond this stage of the coin. We were so limber a few weeks ago!

Sounds like a good plan Smiley  Lets hope no more security holes happen (though those that happened came from outside YOUR code - my perfect Evan [I'm getting creepy now aren't I?  LOL])  Oh boy, I better rein in my sense of humor....

wow WOOOOOWWWW!  That just got a little freaky!  some good DARK humor tho... Roll Eyes

Anyone notice we're on the first page of r/Bitcoin right now?

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/

Good and everything but I've expected something more mature from r/bitcoin (IDK why).

"A" person keeps attacking the coins idea which you defend / answer, "A" person keeps silent, no approval and "B" person attacks/questions another part which you answer, rinse and repeat with the whole ABC.

Also they keep questioning why this is different from coinjoin and/or trolling us with accusations on fake accounts.

I just expected something more from fellow crypto ppl....

 sad but true!

LOL at the irony of that post hitting the front page. I really like the answer to the master node question, I had no idea what the answer was.

All hail our hero, FT_clox_metoo.

Some of those comments in that thread are really cringey, though. Gotta really control myself to not feed that trolls

Yup...I was like..."what the hell?!?"  But your right why bother...if we were worried about it and trying to pump the hell out of it...then sure I'd be in there barking up a storm.  Its not even worth it!  .....complacency breeds ignorance.

Already darkcoin forks popping up, if darkcoin wants to be a success there has to be more innovation ^^.

That comment was a joke...right?!?  Just checking...if you're being serious... Grin

Hi Evan, we should include a link on the website for the DarkCoin reddit...

Also...which is the  better cpu miner right now...1.2c or the 1.3? tnx

Where did sell ever come out of my mouth? Weather I have or haven't, all I am asking is a question that should be answered dumbass.

wooo wooo!!! gents...lets keep it civil.  Evan will certainly be letting you know whats up.  There where 3 devs...Evan as the main, Kyle and Ape back when I first started here as I understood.

I'm not angry, I'm just making an explicit comment towards the typical "SELL" response when a legitimate question comes up. Either a positive remark, or sell.

Sometimes one can't help themselves...myself included.  I've been with this coin since it was first rolled out....so I get to see lots o silly comments.  So I get frustrated too.  That being said...there is I guess there is never really silly questions.  I'd be super stressed if things weren't on the up and up with the devs.

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to understand this stratum exploit better, and something is confusing me.

The lowest difficulty is defined by the biggest target. So if we look at the nBits of the genesis block, we then convert to hex (from the compact representation) to get the diff 1 targets.

In BTC, genesis.nBits    = 0x1d00ffff;

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Difficulty suggests we convert to a hex representation like:

so the hex target is
0x00ffff * 2**(8*(0x1d - 3))
or
0000 0000 ffff 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000

Which matches https://github.com/Crypto-Expert/stratum-mining/blob/master/lib/template_registry.py where for sha256

diff1 = 0x00000000ffff0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Now looking at a scrypt coin, eg LTC:

0x1e0ffff0 is the genesis block nbits

so the hex target is

0x0ffff0 * 2**(8*(0x1e - 3))
or
0000 0fff f000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000

Which doesn't match stratum-mining

 if settings.COINDAEMON_ALGO == 'scrypt' or 'scrypt-jane':
            diff1 = 0x0000ffff00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

ie. the stratum-mining code has 4 leading zeros in the 64 byte hex representation of the target, wheras I get 5 leading zeros when doing the conversion from the compact to the full hex representation of the max difficulty.

I'm sure stratum-mining must be correct  - where am I going wrong?

Something just flew over my head at super sonic speed, what was that?   Shocked

ROTFLMAO!!!!! hahahaha...my thoughts exactly...what the hell just happened there.  Wink  I'm  a biz guy...I'll leave this chat to those that know wtf is going on.  Wink
1330  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | No Premine | 50% cooler/50% less wattage than scryp on: March 13, 2014, 07:01:03 AM
The kgw exploit is real.

The problem is that the software will accept blocks that are timestamped earlier than previous blocks, (for good reasons) up to the median timestamp of the previous 11.

Kgw counts these as very fast blocks and adjusts the difficulty up by its 20% maximum.  Once.   But you can use that once to roll the timestamp back after five blocks that are long enough to drive the difficulty 20%lower each.

So the exploit is to start mining your own block chain, time stamping several blocks into the future far enough to get the maximum downward adjustment of difficulty each time.  Then jump backwards in time getting the maximum upward difficulty once.  Rinse, repeat,  and your chain gets ridiculous low difficulty and you mine a whole lot of blocks while advancing your timestamp not much further than the main chain.

When the time in the main block chain catches up, you release your own chain and force a reorganization, which allocates to you all the coins mined for the last umpty ump blocks.

I'm in the process of rewriting KGW for our purposes. I've spend a few hours thoroughly going through the code and I think I can come up with a better implementation that doesn't have these kind of problems. DarkGravity?  Grin

Evan... That's epic!  DarkGravity!  Nice!

Don't forget, people, that we have a wonderful forum where you can ask questions in an organized fashion.  Subjects can be kept under their own headers, and information can be easily searched, instead of like here where it could be anywhere in 420 + pages.  Please come join us on https://www.darkcointalk.org !

OMG Shameless Plug!

Also chris200x9 and myself are holding a contest for the most active member on the forum. Where the winner will recieve 100 drk.  Shocked

Link here.
https://www.darkcointalk.org/threads/100-drk-active-member-lottery.24/#post-212

If I win...I'll donate it!!!  lets start moving of the darkcointalk.org,   Evan...whats your thoughts on that?  do we want to make that our "official" forum?  Do we have an official forum?  (other then this lol)

First draft of Darkcoin bounties

These are subject to change. Please suggest more and give me your feedback.

A quick explanation of how this will work: The "base bounty amount" is not the final bounty, it's a relative figure to make calculations easier. The base figure is adjusted depending on the actual donations we've received in the fundraiser. The "adjusted bounty amount" is what will actually be paid out.

TL/DR: Donate more, and all the bounties will go up!

*** PLEASE NOTE: Translation bounties will apply only to the new website, which is not yet launched! Expect it to be launched within a couple weeks. ***

PM me your submissions with some kind of proof that it's your work. Some of these bounties are first-in-gets-paid, and some will go into a pool where the best will be judged to receive the bounty (these are marked as such below).

To be honest, I'm a little ticked that this started out as "Bounty pool for marketing and branding" and now it's just "Darkcoin bounties" including bug reports etc.  I'm fine with that for now, if that's what the funds are most needed for at this point.

But at some point, we need a REAL marketing pool, and it shouldn't be just spent on these incremental increases in value.  It should be spent on something AWESOME.  Marketing is an art, you don't just pay out a couple hundred bucks to make a slightly better website or translate to an additional language.  At least, that's not ultimately the best use of funds when you're ready for mass adoption.  Right now, this thread has ~171,000 page views.  That's great for now.  A liberal estimate means maybe 200,000 people have heard of Darkcoin.  All it takes is one good marketing play... one single thing that stands out, and you get over 10 million people that have now heard about your coin.  Doge has no technical use whatsoever and is far less interesting than DRK, but a brilliant marketing idea like donating $30k to the jamaiican bobsled team generates over 10 million views.  We need to find our own crazy marketing idea.  I'm not sure what exactly that is, but something that fits DRK and will get 10 million views based just on one single marketing effort.  This doesn't have to cost much, but it will take a decent chunk of any marketing pool and be worth way more than the sum of all of these incremental updates.  It could be something like a billboard.  You can rent out a billboard for a month that displays digital ads in a high traffic area along the freeway for under $1000/month.  This probably isn't the best fit for DRK, but someone has to get creative and figure out what that is.

I'd be willing to donate 5 to 10x my previous contribution to a marketing pool with a real marketing idea like this.

It’s not in the list of bounties but I think it’s essential we have the following as soon as possible to attract the interest of the media (I’m a journalist so I feel confident about this!)

1.   A considerable mailing list of journalists/newspapers/blogs, especially ones that have run features/news on Bitcoin in the past
2.   A suite of professional press releases (this should be an ongoing project with press releases sent at every milestone)
3.   One of the first releases should include a story about someone buying something anonymously with DRK. Most of the general news coverage about Bitcoin these days is either about security breaches at exchanges or merchants beginning to accept BTC/someone buying something unusual with BTC. We probably want the latter at the moment, with a focus on how the buyer was able to purchase anonymously

Sorry about harping on about media but I really want to see DRK succeed! I wrote an early draft media release which could be updated for the first release (http://pastebin.com/HjrXLCfg) and made a start at the mailing list (http://pastebin.com/DMWjmqG2)

Cool....I'm donating another 25 DRK!!! Holy crap....I'm donate happy these days!!!! LOL

PS: Can LimLims update us as to what our fund is at?  I want to donate more....

Criticisms:

Your media outreach is a bit unrealistic and it's not helpful to just list the "big boys" and say an article. You want real media outreach. Include the big boys, but you can't expect any of those to take notice of DRK at this point. Your bounty should be way more specific:

1. Compile a list of "influencial" cryptocurrency bloggers to conduct outreach to (approx 10-20 to start). This list needs to include contact information and be approved before outreach begins.

2. Write (and get approved) an outreach letter/email. This should be short and concise introducing the currency, the developer and providing the person you are contacting an incentive to reply back (i.e. the developer is making himself available for an interview, online Q&A sessions).

3. Nominate a single (or no more than a few people) to conduct the outreach. Bounties in the wild will just lead to mass confusion with no one "officially" representing the project. Trust me, if random people just start spamming "WRITE AN ARTICLE ABOUT DRK" with no real connection to the coin, nothing will happen.

You need to set into place some sort of review & approval process if you want to be professional about this. Set up a real process to conduct outreach If the team is inexperienced have them start with the smaller journalists to do trial runs.

The Security Bounties Are Very Vague
If you are really going to control this, you need to really understand the importance of the testing/QA and final endorsement of the security community to this coin.

Again, random, small bounties for bugs isn't the right approach. You need to get someone in place who can do the research to find a notable third-party, respected party in the world of security and crypto to audit the security and the goal being some sort of endorsement at the end of the process. Right now, these are bug-fixes.

This is the most important part of your list and all other stuff needs to be secondary. Again, if this coin can't deliver on the anonymous stuff, all other efforts are in vein. Getting reviewed by/endorsed by someone notable is what you are striving for.

Thank you, this is excellent critcism. Unfortunately I have a day job and only so much time to coordinate these bounties and write up detailed conditions for security testing. Hmm, maybe I can make a bounty for that...

So on that note: who wants to help define these bounties in more detail, answer queries & validate submissions? I could definitely use the help.

Well PM me if you ever want input, i too have RL job but I do want this to succeed. I think it's one of the very few coins out that has a chance of making something out of itself.

I think you just need to really learn how to prioritize things and focus on the right things to help the coin succeed. This can be done with a simple yes/no question on whether the item is a key factor for success. Many of those items aren't, at this phase, imo.

Look at the hype something like Ethereum gets. It's from technical discussions, whether through articles, white papers and most important conferences.

One item you should amend to the list is a travel fund, if the dev is into it, to get him to go to (and speak at) conferences. Get noticed and many of those other pieces (like media attention and legit parties willing to audit/test the code) fall into place.

It seems to me that both of you seem to have a grasp on this.  I'll try to be more of a resource....once I'm  caught up with our renos at the  winery.  PM me if you need anything specific.  Sorry LimLims for the delay in response.  I'll keep donating DRK... another 50 DRK right now. Wink

Official fundraiser for Darkcoin marketing & branding

Since Darkcoin was 0% premined, we will be doing this the old fashioned way, with a fundraiser. Many people in the community have expressed an interest in pushing our marketing effort along. We wanted to make sure the time was right, while Evan sorted out the kinks in the Darksend code. But we are nearly ready to show Darkcoin and Darksend to the world, so let's get this moving.

I will release a list of bounties for marketing & branding in the next day or so when I have a bit of spare time. For now, you may donate to the official fundraising wallet (anonymously if you like!). You can also PM me with your donation details and I'll keep some accounting, if only for the sake of making sure your donation is accounted for and spent appropriately.

As always, you are a fantastic community and we appreciate your support!

Hi Evan...is this an official fundraiser wallet authorized by you and Ape?  Not questioning LimLims...just want to have an official OK and green light from our devs that this approved by them as the approved wallet address.  If this wallet is...can we have the official wallet address listed on the website and at the beginning of this forum thread so that no one can alter this wallet address and have the funds go to someones private wallet.  Thanks.

Yes, I am way too busy to do it myself. However, I put LimLims incharge of management of the project awhile back.

thanks...must have missed that! Wink

OK...Please Let's end this discussion once and for all.  Evan has said that DarkCoin will be open sourced... once Darksend is out of beta. The plan is to be open sourced.  I'm am very certain that Mr. Eduffield is aware that this is and will be an on going evolution with many more features to be added with time.  I for one am quite confident that Evan and Ape have taken the time to consider the route they wish for this coin. it would far more productive if we could come up with a wish list of additional features that people would think as cutting edge.
