2001  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Best Alt coin to invest in 2014 on: July 28, 2014, 08:23:42 AM
NEM ~ Hold.   Purchase now on NXT asset exchange.

NXT ~ short term trade.  When subsequent major features are brought in, the price can go up a few cents but will probably come back down.  August 1 is supposedly a major content release.  Buy now and profit a few days after August 1?

Ora ~ based on Kora and will probably surpass it.  Soon to hit the NXT asset exchange.  Don't buy right away, as you might be buying into a hype buy.  Wait until the prices settle.   This could possibly be the surprise coin of 2014, in that it might pop up between $10 to $20 million.

That's the first "IF".  It took a literal decade plus to get all the bugs in Java and C++ worked out, and to educate a generation of developers to program in that language.  Who is going to program in Ethereum, to bring all the "flexible stuff" you want, if nobody is versed in the language?

"If" Ethereum comes out.. what then?  Maidsafe barely grew any capitalization beyond its' IPO.  Mastercoin, which was the first grand IPO, is now a dying stagnating coin.   Ethereum is stuck being this ponzi scheme ran by a few wealthy investors that will likely just stagnate.  There's no incentive for subsequent investors to come in.

Vitalik and the Ethereum crew get nervous and/or refuse to answer questions when other 2.0 coins are mentioned.  I bet even NODE is better than Ethereum, LOL.

Ethereum being PoW / PoS hybrid (emphasis on the former) technically makes it a generation 1.5 coin in my book, even with the new 'programming language' that probably won't be put to much use until 10 years down the line.
2003  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Opinion on the US on: July 28, 2014, 06:25:32 AM
I'm old enough to remember what US manufacturing was like until the jobs were sent overseas.   The made in America was never as good as people claimed it to be.  I'm referring to those Zenith televisions that would always break!  Zenith doesn't even exist anymore.   Shocked  Now a more contemporary reminder are all those recalls in the US automobile manufacturers.

As much as people say made in China is junk - my clothes made in China haven't exploded on me yet, neither has my Ipod or the computer parts I bought over the years that came from China.  I haven't had a TV made overseas die on me yet, even though I witnessed multiple Zenith and other American brands die.   Let's face it the stuff made in East Asia is better than the stuff that was ever made in America.

Interestingly enough I was going through the history books and found out this has always been the case with American manufacturing.  Americans back in the 1860s, 1890s and the 1900s were calling for tariffs and the main argument was that American products (due to being inferior) couldn't compete with oversea products hence we needed a tariff to save our industry.

For all the argument of the WASP work ethic - it doesn't seem to have materialized much in US history outside of the armaments industry.

If the government wanted to address poor housing among the poor then they would put an end to the slum lord apartments.  Slum apartments are only slums due to the slum lord who owns them.  Don't for a moment assume all slum apartments are $50 a month, most of them are essentially market rate minus a few hundred dollars dollars (not enough to excuse the terrible conditions).

Donald Sterling was charging $800+ a month (before utilities) for his slum apartments in Los Angeles that had mold, broken pipes and no air conditioning.
2005  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Facebook's BUY button! Bitcoin's big moment is here on: July 28, 2014, 05:59:59 AM
Bitcoin has a smaller capitalization than dropbox.  Governments might like Bitcoin; as do some libetarians, but mainstreet is either hostile to Bitcoin or it'll take them years to get on board.
2006  Economy / Speculation / Re: So Who's Selling? on: July 28, 2014, 05:57:22 AM
The only time Bitcoin seems to be going up is due to speculation buying anytime there's "good news".  Like Newegg said it'ld accept Bitcoin and the Bitcoin went up by $30-40 very quickly but no way was that new users, it was existing holders buying more Bitcoin with anticipation that prices will be going up and therefore to sell at a gain.

Bitcoin needs a huge rush of capital, like back in November / December, to go up again.  Nobody knows when or if it will happen.
2007  Other / Off-topic / Re: How much time you have spent in jail on: July 28, 2014, 05:19:22 AM
That's because this website is full of Europeans.  Jail in Europe is like a gated country club by American standards.   American prison on the other hand - they shove you into a dink cell, half the inmates get cholera and your cell mate Bubba on death row hasn't seen a woman in four years.  That definitely discourages you from committing crimes!  Can't do the time then don't do the crime.

2009  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ethereum IPO reboot coming, time to get nervous about the future of crypto on: July 28, 2014, 01:02:02 AM
I don't like how they are selling Ether for BTC when there's no Ether blockchain or coins.  Lots of hype around this "platform", same goes for Storj, lots of show with little being delivered.  Right now, all these are just sleight of hand tricks to crowdfund without calling it crowdfunding.

Hey, give me a bunch of BTC because I just made a slick video about how I'm going to disrupt conventional application delivery!

Ugh...

All the current "IPO's" seem to be offering nothing but promises. Buying them is a big gamble and I almost took the risk, but decided it was placing to much trust in just a promise they would produce something great.

Same risk as any other IPO, imho.  The difference is the reward is far less.  Ethereum at $10 to $30 million starting capitalization can only go up so much unless some miracle happens.  Litecoin has been the only alternate coin so far to hit a valuation in the 300 million range.

Ethereum has too much bad PR go big.  Once people realize there's a Goldman Sachs' connection (the people responsible for the 2008 crisis) and it's a premine to make a few greedy rich people people even richer, it's over.

In contrast, there's tons of alternates out there which start at $50K to $500K capitalization and have potential to hit $50 million (100x to 1000x return on investment).

What happens if this coin surpasses Qora in capitalization?   Huh

Innovations - NEM is a one-to-one clone of Nxt, but they seek to differentiate themselves by offering vast improvements to Nxt’s framework

The details on this should be clarified.  I haven't taken an in-depth look at the code myself but I was under the impression that NEM wasn't an one-to-one clone.  The language suggests that they took NXT and just swapped out the POS for POI, which to my understanding that wasn't the case at all.  The NXT source code that was released back in early 2014 (which was of terrible quality) convinced coins like NEM and NODE to write new code.  Even the NXT developers themselves had to patch up the code tons after February.

If NEM is an "one-to-one" clone of NXT then Bitcoin is an "one-to-one" clone of eGold.

Hmmm, thought I might que in on this.

Something a little different than what's been tossed around so far Smiley

Thats by far the best one here!

Yes it's my favourite so far.
2013  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Moderated Thread - Logo Voting Has Begun[Updates & Discussion] on: July 27, 2014, 11:26:18 PM
Besides PoI and the relatively good distribution, what else makes NEM stand out? I need a better understanding to defend against naysayers.

A list in easy to understand format would be very helpful.

Who is to say we cannot use the innovative rhetoric?  There are things NEM does which is better than NXT and other 2.0 coins, never mind the 1.0 coins.  There's no trademark on being innovative and the definition is open, I've seen generation 1.5 coins use the innovative rhetoric with success.

You have to recall that there's a bigger world out there than just NXT bagholders. .

NEM as far as I know is the more secured wallet out there.  Wallet.Dat plus the Login, Password and Encryption.  This is compared to something like NXT which is a brainwallet and someone's password can be gained through bruteforcing or a keylog / virus / trojan.  There's always been huge and minor thefts in NXT.   Then 1.0 coins tend to just be the wallet.dat.  Even some generation 2.0 coins are wallet.dat
2014  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Moderated Thread - Logo Voting Has Begun[Updates & Discussion] on: July 27, 2014, 08:48:56 PM
There should be a handout created for NEM targeted for people completely new to digital currencies. It should be brochure like, easy for anyone to print out. Make it as simple as possible, explain the idea of digital currencies as a whole and then what approach NEM is taking. People involved in the swarm team could print these off and post them locally on bulletins or hand them out by hand on streets, campuses, local events.

Going further, we could put a message inside some of the brochure offering free X amount of NEM (we could include what market value this would be in $) for anyone potentially interested in getting involved with the project. We could make the brochures unique by serial numbers and have them redeem them after creating an account on the Nem forums.

Does this seem like a realistic marketing idea?

No.  Bitcoin itself is only used by a million people around the world.  Getting people to use crypto currencies is an education campaign and a simple brochure (even with measly freebies attached - which I don't like) would have a very low effectiveness rate.

I've seen the marketing strategies used by Litecoin and Dogecoin.  Back in 2013 they were spamming on large internet forums like Bodybuilding but it wasn't an education campaign "why you should use cryptos" but more like "hear about dat Bitcoin chyieet?  Well throw money at Litecoin and make $$$$"

However unethical it was for LTC / Doge people to pass off their coin as a money flipping opportunity, I don't think anyone on their forum ever writes: "hey guys, remember in 2013 when you were passing off money flipping opportunities to random people on the internet?".

Litecoin is used in Bitfinex as a financial instrument. Very big advantage. There is always a possibility that Litecoin being included in Coinbase thanks to Charlie's connection.

Hmm I wasn't referring to now.  I was there when Litecoin was only a measly $3 dollars.  Its' growth in such a short period was phenomenal.  It was largely pumped by the masses who missed out on Bitcoin's climb to $1250.

That method they used was effective in the sense that Doge was able to hit $60 million and LTC is still the Prince to BTC and I was around (albeit not registered on BTT at the time) to see its' raise.  Ironically it was those LTC money flipping threads on websites like Bodybuilding that made me lurk on Bitcointalk.

2016  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The Deathblow to Proof of Stake on: July 27, 2014, 08:34:51 PM
This discussion about NXT is irrelevant.  It used to be a stable 8 to 9 cents back in January and has yet to recover to its' former capitalization.  Subsequent development might interest a niche of tech geeks but it doesn't matter to the meat and bone investors, traders and buyers in general.

If we were talking about any other coin then more of you would be brave enough to say that NXT is a stagnating / dying coin.  For the same reasons why everyone regards Mastercoin as dying.  Maybe Mastercoin is still developing but that's just as irrelevant as NXT having continuing development.

It's not 2009 / 2010, if a coin can't maintain momentum past a couple months (which NXT couldn't) then it's a sign that a coin isn't meant to be and that it's simply not the coin wanted by the public at large.   We could dwell on should haves and could haves but NXT is NXT, you can't change something which has been out for 9 months since genesis and you can't change the public's first impression so readily.

There's already the upcoming next generation of POS and mixed-PoS which has explicitly addressed poor distribution (which was a huge factor in NXT's collapse as January / February was around the time when everyone became aware of the distribution) and all the problems associated with.  Those upcoming 2nd generation POS coins are the ones you should be buying.  Buying NXT coin right now (versus these upcoming coins) is equivalent to buying Peercoin when NXT first came out.

2017  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Moderated Thread - One Click Install Is Here[Updates & Discussion] on: July 26, 2014, 11:07:47 PM
Also, you guys need to give it a rest about UtopianFuture. Yes, he did start the project, but he's not here anymore. There are a lot of great people still here working on NEM. Focus on what they're doing and maybe even consider contributing yourselves.

And, in truth, what NEM is today is a lot different from UtopianFuture's original vision.

I also don't know why people refer to UtopianFuture as UP (UtopianFuture) instead of UF (UtopianFuture)

Maybe there's a lot of Ultimate Fighter fans on Bitcointalk?  Can't confuse people after all..
2018  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Moderated Thread - One Click Install Is Here[Updates & Discussion] on: July 26, 2014, 11:06:45 PM
Why NEM and not NXT?

 Huh

Satoshi 1.0 plus BCnext 2.0 make NEM 3.0.  NEM is silver.  Much riches.  Much wow.  To the moooon

2019  Economy / Economics / Re: Why is China Hoarding Gold? on: July 26, 2014, 10:50:33 PM
China hoarding gold?   You meant like how they were hoarding silver during the British Empire and the British responded by turning China into a nation of opium junkies?  Surely this will work better the next time!

Last I heard the CIA opium fields in Afghanistan are running at full production and they need new customers.   Wink
2020  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [NFO] Ethereum = Scam on: July 26, 2014, 08:15:41 PM
Ethereum might be the Next Big Thing in altcoins. Over 10,000,000 ETH sold during the first day, which equals to 5000 BTC.
People are crazy about this IPO, they're selling their jewellery and even cars to buy ETH!

Any proof they actually sold that much!?!

Before this thread was up and the coindesk articles came out.. they already had sold like $1 million..  I'm thinking it has to be internal buying / artificial volume.  Supposedly any BTC the founders put in they get back but keep the Ether.
