761  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: CoinGator on: May 24, 2013, 05:22:10 AM
yet they aren't catching as much crap as you guys are giving this company.

They're catching *more* crap. Please see the "Scam Accusations" threads about how BitInstant is failing to be, well, instant. As for them using Paypal, I was up against that the first day they announced it.

It's not like there is a "chargeback all transactions as fraudulent" button their company can just push and instantly get their money back. Think Paypal is really this dumb to think that these transactions are all fraud on the 1000s of users' end? Also, their account is no way going to be receiving any decent amount of cash without going through a pretty thorough check with paypal at some point. If they're going to scam (will be using fake information?), they will be shut down within receiving over $10k or sooner.
You're either a scammer trying to spread FUD, or you've never used Paypal extensively as a payments provider like I have.

Also, the 6 month timeline for a chargeback is only if the payment was made from a credit card.  This is because paypal is at the mercy of the credit card companies with longer chargeback times. These guys will have to be paying from their paypal balance which only has a 45 day window for chargebacks.  Given the amount of time they have already been operating, I would bet they don't intend on scamming.
I've personally proven this wrong numerous times, it's well documented that people have called the solutions technicians directly and had their funds reversed as late as 12 months after.

Now this the more likely scenario and I agree with almost all of it except the part where you say user's accounts also get limited.
Paypal's TOS has been the subject of numerous threads here on the forums with the same outcome for everyone. They do not allow the trading of currencies. Trading is both selling and buying. Both accounts get limited. Stop spreading FUD.

And for the record, in 2008 I started making $1000s of dollars monthly on eBay/Paypal.  My account was in good standing and was all the sudden "limited" by Paypal with no warnging. However, I submitted all the documents they requested: Photo ID & bank account statement (notarized by bank manager), copy of DBA certification from my state, and my business EIN number.  My account was unfrozen days later; now over 5 years and $150k later, I have had no issues (this includes selling bitcoins).
If you're so sure of yourself, what is your paypal email? We'll call Paypal, tell them you're selling a digital currency, and see what happens to your account after that. (Pro-tip: The exact same thing that happens to each and every personal and business account who has violated their TOS and tried it over the past 3 years regardless of verifications, documents, etc)

That being said, the only people at risk here I think is the company itself if it doesn't tread carefully with Paypal...

I repeat, you're either a scammer spreading FUD or you're just ignorant to the reality of Paypal. Paypal is a scam enabler and the people running "CoinGator" do not deserve anyone's trust.
762  Other / Off-topic / Re: I was offered $550 to say that "Ripple is a Scam." on: May 24, 2013, 05:05:43 AM
Okay so that confirms what every troll in this thread had attempted to mislead away from. The next question is, why would anyone (including TradeFortress) waste multiples of 5 BTC just to put up anti Ripple propaganda?

Someone should find out just how much they have spent to date (forum advertisements, ripplescam domain and hosting, paying accounts, etc) to try and make Ripple look bad. Usually people don't go to such lengths without some kind of personal motives. I'm sure we all appreciate when people come together to warn each other of potential scams, but we can probably all also agree that this is a bit suspiciously over the top (considering Ripple's developers are respected members of the community).

BTC0.055 for i3lome

matt do you want a BTC0.01 consolation prize

i3lome stated his intentions and then delivered with additional information

I'm actually wondering about a site I saw in the newbies forum and whether it's a scam or not (newbiejail.org). Instead of paying me, try out that site with the 0.01BTC and do us all a favor of seeing if it's a scam or not Cheesy

ok so i should make an account to try that?

I guess so!

Message "piuk" here on the forums.

767  Economy / Lending / Re: 0.2 Btc Loan on: May 23, 2013, 10:37:59 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if it ends poorly. The borrower was gambling with money he admits to having needed to pay others. Doesn't seem like an issue of trust as much as just an issue of common sense.
768  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The ASIC device scams are getting a little fancier. on: May 23, 2013, 10:19:00 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if this was set up by Ed Trice.
769  Economy / Economics / Re: Billionaires hate Bitcoin. on: May 23, 2013, 09:04:55 PM
"Billionaires hate bitcoin"

  • What kind of billionaire? One that become rich from his cup ramen noodle factory? I doubt he gives a shit about the emergence of new internet currencies. More likely, he'd be thrilled to hear of another currency being available to nerds that eat his ramen. More money for him.
  • If the assertion was that "Billionaires would hate bitcoin", if they thoroughly understood it, then I guess I could somewhat agree in select cases. As it stands though, I don't think most billionaires have ever heard of bitcoin. They don't seem the type to worry much about things which market caps are less than their holdings.
770  Economy / Gambling / Re: mem's BITCOIN GAMBLING LIST on: May 23, 2013, 08:55:18 PM
I personally dislike forum run lotteries due to the inherent risk, but Im happy to list it as Pending and monitor it while its run (which I try to do with all lottery sites and event betting sites).

Is there really any extra risk when a game doesn't have a website?

SatoshiDice could easily operate without a website.  All they need is the blockchain and somewhere to publish their addresses.  A forum thread could work for that.  I don't think a web presence really reduces risk at all.  Pirate had a website.  So did BitcoinMax.

If the operator decides to run off with people's bets, having a website isn't going to stop him.

It's an interesting point and I guess you could say it simply reduces exposure, nothing more, nothing less.
771  Other / Off-topic / Re: Thinking about starting a business in bitcoin? on: May 23, 2013, 08:50:40 PM
On one hand, you could say that you don't "look for creativity", you either have it or you don't, but that seems a little bit elitists. Many good ideas do just come to people, but I suspect it's not without influence. Bitcoin has given many people some good ideas, and they had to come looking for bitcoin.
772  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [Resolved] Caution about OKPay [Turns out they're probably fine] on: May 23, 2013, 08:48:33 PM
I also sent a message to "OKPAY" to respond to this thread (since the title is now that of inquiry instead of slander). I think it is always healthy to have evidence here on the forums of a money service business' legitimacy. Can't hurt anything.
773  Other / Off-topic / Re: I was offered $550 to say that "Ripple is a Scam." on: May 23, 2013, 08:42:18 PM
I saw TradeFortress posting before trying to contact people who had posts on the first page of the ripple thread.

Is he actually denying this?

I don't think he has made any significant comments, just "BULLSHIT" and that he didn't contact GoWest directly (something that was never claimed by anyone ever).

Either:

A) someone is spreading propaganda against Ripple for their own benefit; (who and why?)
B) there is a conspiracy to frame TradeFortresss (who and why?)

It's fascinating to see all the whiteknighting posts completely missing this point.
774  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Mattew N. Wright still passing off a scam in the past as just a "prank" on: May 23, 2013, 08:36:31 PM
If you accept the fact that people trusted in him, regardless of his underlaying intent and he failed to follow through with what he said he would do then I completely agree, untrustworthy is an appropriate tag

The problem with a general "untrustworthy" tag is that it's highly subjective. There are many who trust me immensely, and for good reason (it benefits them to do so). They may not trust me for making public bets with millions of dollars I don't have, but people trust me with funds, business decisions and management on a daily basis. If the tag were "untrustworthy with public bets" (aka deadbeat) then it might even be more appropriate, except then it wouldn't make sense when I have settled with the last better. The way I see it, this topic is something to be discussed *after* I've finished settling with everyone. At that point, I highly doubt even Theymos himself could sufficiently argue a need for any tag.

Prank or not, scam or not, he has made great progress resolving the issue - whatever you choose to call it:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=140654.msg1497432#msg1497432

In the long run that is all that really matters.  People make mistakes, they pay for their mistakes, they learn and grow - I know I have.

I hadn't seen this thread before. Apologies if my previous post came off as condemning you (it really wasn't meant to).

I remember the first time I came across your posts from when I first joined. They were so raw with youth and people wouldn't give you a chance.

I left the forums for about a year and came back to the whole Pirate debacle.

I imagine there's been plenty of time for personal growth since those early posts and it's humbling to see you're still working hard to build a community and that you're doing your best to correct a mistake.

All the best Smiley

I appreciate that. Something people may not know is how badly it hurt seeing my own friends (people like Erik Voorhees) turn against me publicly. It was a real turning point for me when my own friends couldn't handle my behavior. It forced me to look at myself and whom I was really hurting.

Although I appreciate the hypothesis presented for consideration, I know what I am and what I am not. I can most certainly live with a few people in the world thinking poorly of me on a forum for my past mistakes and even the occasional dramatic accusation. The way I see it, all I need to do is make sure in the future I don't let myself into situations against where such accusations can ever be considered "founded" and I suppose I'll be fine.

775  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info - Bitcoin Block explorer & Currency Statistics on: May 23, 2013, 06:40:48 PM
Yeah as elaborated in asicminer thread it is most likely just troll that wanted to move price a bit down. Its all based on some reddit post of user with 1 post

scroll up a few posts and you'll see that piuk, the owner of blockchain.info is the one making the post, silly.
776  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin will go Viral on: May 23, 2013, 06:21:59 PM
Exactly. Bitcoin will have an easier time becoming "viral" through middlee man services that let you interact with the coins when you want but don't require it (like BitPay).
777  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Mattew N. Wright still passing off a scam in the past as just a "prank" on: May 23, 2013, 05:11:36 PM
"Surely matthew would have taken the money if he had won"
"There is no way he wasn't serious because no one would have gone to such lengths to troll"

Everytime I read opinions like these it just reminds me how scattered and poorly I've presented myself the last two years (anyone who knows me knows to what lengths I used to go to do something funny or mess with people). I'm quite happy I'm not suffering from that problem as badly these days and I accept that the owners of windows I broke will always think what they want, but my integrity is not up for bargaining.

What I'm doing now is basically settling that I crossed a line when I fooled others whom I thought were ignorant at the time (I was a bit manic). The several bitcoiners who lived with me can attest to the constant laughing and making fun of super serious old men who thought they'd win millions of dollars from a forum bet. It wasn't the right way to handle those people. Looking back, I'm ashamed I didn't take the high road. I'm more ashamed I put myself into a situation where others could so easily start threads questioning my integrity and not be immediately laughed at.

Life is hardly over though, and I'm happy to be given a chance to make things right for everyone who was involved. As for people who weren't involved, my advice would be to stop putting people in situations that require so much trust in the first place. That's the only lesson that matters for you.
778  Economy / Services / Re: [0.05BTC] Find me a world record on: May 23, 2013, 12:12:05 PM
There is no record. Good luck on your attempt!

Called it!
779  Other / Off-topic / Re: I was offered $550 to say that "Ripple is a Scam." on: May 23, 2013, 12:06:57 PM
GoWest made the accusation. My post tells you what that accusation would mean. I'm open to suggestions on better ways to word it, but it is what it is.
780  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Caution OKPay appears to be a scam. on: May 23, 2013, 08:48:30 AM
I refuse to disuss anything withyou until you change the thread title. Until then, comments from me will only popularize your slander. "OKPAY is doing something I don't understand" would be more accurate.
