461  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is LocalMonero a mixer/tumbler for XMR coins? on: November 06, 2023, 09:49:53 PM
First question: Can someone trace the 0.5 XMR back to my Monero GUI Wallet?

Unlike Bitcoin, Monero keeps things private.  When you look at the Monero blockchain, the details of each transaction are hidden from view.  You cannot see the amount of coins being sent or the addresses for the wallets doing the sending.  This helps keep Monero users anonymous.

But it is not perfect anonymity.  The transaction fees and timestamps are still visible and  so if you withdraw Monero from an exchange, they can match up that withdrawal with a transaction on the blockchain using the timing and fees as clues.  They cannot follow the money after that initial transaction though, unless you transfer the coins to another centralized exchange. So Monero offers more privacy than other cryptocurrencies, but moving coins between your own wallets is better than going through exchanges if you want to stay totally anonymous.
462  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I’ve bought 100 BTC in 2011. Need help to find them for rewards. on: November 06, 2023, 08:13:59 PM

Of course, I also don't really believe that it will be possible to find these bitcoins, but just in case, I decided to ask for help from the community.

So, does your buddy even have any real evidence this 100 BTC thing is for real? Or could he just be messing with you? That is something to think about.

And even if it did happen, would it really show up on the blockchain? I kinda doubt it.  Cause if he bought the bitcoin on some exchange site, that transactions just happen internally in the exchange's system. The blockchain is only gonna record when he deposited bitcoin in or withdrew the bitcoin out  so trying to dig up some old 100 bitcoin buy is probably a dead end.

Id tell him to show you some real proof first before you go on some wild goose chase.

In 2011 I’ve bought 100+ BTC on some cryptocurrency stock exchange and now I can not remember what was the site exactly.

Are you absolutely sure that it was a real event and not just a dream? You lack any tangible evidence, so maybe it was all just a figment of your imagination?   Grin

464  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Fake Leger Live app. on: November 05, 2023, 07:11:21 PM
~
UPD. Found an article that says "The app was being used to steal people's Bitcoin by asking users to enter in their 12-24 word recovery phrase into the app."

Ok, if that is true, it means the scammer played the human stupidity card. Not surprising.

Sometimes I wonder why people buy hardware wallets in the first place…  Huh
465  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Can this be possible? on: November 05, 2023, 06:51:09 PM

so can the chat be possible?

This screenshot looks like a doodle to me, like someone was just scribbling on a price chart.  Though I guess it could be some kinda daylight savings time glitch, as another comment said.  That seems possible too.

Anyway, no way this is evidence of time travelers.  They wouldnt be so dumb to leave obvious clues that could mess up space-time continuum and  that could like destroy the whole universe even.
466  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FTX CEO Sam Bankman Fried found guilty on: November 04, 2023, 09:42:08 PM
It is a bitter victory, because in reality the damage was enormous, the cryptographic niche suffered a severe blow with this case. I don't think this is an end to this type of scams and/or crooks, but at least it is setting a good precedent, guilty.

This is certainly a high-profile case, mainly because of the large number of affected customers and the substantial amount of embezzled money. However, it is not exactly unique, and it can hardly be called a precedent. Stuff like this has happened before and will probably happen again.  It is not that new or unique really.
467  Other / Meta / Re: A small merit-sending UI tweak on: November 04, 2023, 08:15:50 PM
I also prefer Approach C. Just a placeholder text, similar to how it is now, but more error-proof.

hahaha I can understand and to be fair these are things preventing theymos from upgrading the forum or switching to Epochtalk smoothly. I think current SMF version has been changed a lot that scares even theymos to touch it. For rexample trust system would be another story.

I thought EpochTalk was meant to be a completely original platform, not just a fork of some existing open-source solution. So, these features should have been part of its core design from the start, right?

I believe it would be necessary to create and pin a thread in the beginners and help section about sending merits to assist newbies in using the merit function

You are not serious are you?
468  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: what if bitcoin becomes inferior on: November 04, 2023, 07:49:58 PM

What if someone with as much genius and passion as Satoshi is creating a system better than Bitcoin?

WTF, OP? I get you are excited about this topic and want to discuss it, but making multiple posts about the same thing is a bit much.  We like fresh ideas here, not reruns.  Dont you know how to use the forum? Its like you are stuck in a loop, repeating the same thing over and over.  Cheesy

What if the second Satoshi appears?
469  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / Re: What do you think about the decrease of Bitcoin price yesterday on: November 04, 2023, 07:30:29 PM
What decrease in price? I did not even notice. However, what I have noticed is an increase in the price of almost 30% in the last ten days or so. Welcome to the world of crypto, OP!
470  Other / Meta / Re: I raise a motion to create a board where health issues can be discussed. on: November 03, 2023, 09:29:53 PM
~
Can you imagine our forum p.h.D coming to such a board talking about biolabs and why Bitcoin is bad because it doesn't help to advance science bs? 😉

Good point.  Now that you mention it, I can see the benefits of having a separate section of the forum for discussing mental health challenges some folks here seem to be facing and  weve definitely got some characters who may need professional help - like our friend P.h.D.! But if we did add a board like that, theymos would probably need to bring on a couple of therapists instead of moderators.   Cheesy
471  Economy / Gambling / Re: Betfury will not pay the promised bounty for bugs found on: November 03, 2023, 08:25:34 PM
OP, did their bug bounty department get back to you after they asked for more details and the exact steps used to recreate the bug? Just because they havent hit you back yet doesnt automatically mean they will reject paying you for finding the bug.  They might still be reviewing your bug report. Id give them a bit more time before assuming they are gonna deny your bounty claim.  But definitely follow up if its been more than a few days with no response and dont let them ignore you if you put in the work to find a legit bug!
472  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Derivation Path on electrum on: November 03, 2023, 07:46:51 PM
Restoring your Electrum wallet on a different machine is easy. Just go with the "I already have a seed" option. In the next step, you will be able to choose the seed type: Electrum, BIP39, or SLIP39. If you stick with the default, Electrum will assume you are importing an Electrum seed.  You do not need to choose the derivation path.
473  Economy / Reputation / Re: Advertised services and participants in a paid sig campaign on: November 03, 2023, 06:56:37 PM
Honestly, I'm surprised why this thread is still open.
~

Why not keep it open? People are still voting in the poll and actively engaging in the debate and sharing their arguments and opinions. At least this thread is not censored so anyone can leave any comment they want without fear of it being deleted.

Why not ask BenCodie why his thread is still open?
474  Economy / Economics / Re: Are You Sticking to Your Plan or Has Life Made You Pause or Modify It? on: November 02, 2023, 10:36:28 PM
I do not really have some official plan or anything.  I am pretty much done with the whole traditional banking scene.  These days I mostly just use different cryptocurrencies instead of dealing with banks and  i know it probably sounds crazy, but I am all about the future of finance being decentralized and people controlling their own money without needing big institutions like banks anymore. It is not just a plan; it is a lifestyle.
475  Other / Meta / Re: I raise a motion to create a board where health issues can be discussed. on: November 02, 2023, 10:20:27 PM
For instance, in gambling, politics and society, economics, and many others, discussions have been made, and with a health board, a better understanding of our health issues can be identified immediately.

The discussions on those message boards still kinda relate to Bitcoin, even if just remotely.  I dont get how the "health issues" board relates to BitcoinTalk though.  If you  wanna talk about health things, you can do it in Off-topic where pretty much anything goes.
476  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: ASIC HOMEMADE on: November 01, 2023, 10:30:21 PM
~
Does an ASIC designed for ETC or KAS or SHA256 only do this? At the hardware level, can it not do anything less than less efficient?

ASIC is short for Application Specific Integrated Circuit.  It is basically a microchip that is custom-designed to do one specific job super efficiently and  unlike something general-purpose like an FPGA that you can reprogram for different stuff after manufacturing, an ASIC chip can only do that one thing it was originally designed for.  It is way faster and lower power and cheaper at scale since every transistor and connection is optimized for its exact purpose.  But on the flipside, the hardware is set in stone.  You would have to design a whole new custom ASIC chip from scratch if you wanted it to do something else.
477  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A Simple Reason Why Bitcoin is not Money on: November 01, 2023, 10:06:09 PM
Why is it so hard for you people to address the actual argument? If the OP is to complex for you to comprehend, if the summary is to complex, if one sentence is to complex, let me express the argument in a single word: purpose.

So, from what you are saying, it doesnt really have an actual purpose? But then why is it even a thing that exists? I dont get it - why do folks use something that doesnt have a real purpose?

Are you saying Bitcoin isnt even a real thing at all? That it is just made up numbers or something? Im lost here and  it seems to exist since people use it, but you are saying it has no purpose.  Help me wrap my head around how something can exist but not have an underlying reason for existing in the first place.  The whole concept is confusing to me.
478  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: LastPass hack - move your crypto assets to a more secure place right now! on: October 31, 2023, 09:55:06 PM
This is sad but whoever stores their crypto backups / seeds / passwords to wallets etc in an ONLINE password manage totally misunderstood tthe self-custody aspect of crypto / Bitcoin.
I still believe password managers do have some value - for throwaway logins or stuff that is just very convenient to access via some basic account. Anythign related to your identity or any real value does not belong there however.

Also, I do believe there are hardware solutions - didn't Trezor have a built-in password manager? Not sure if they continued this service, though

I believe that not all of these people had their seeds in LastPass. Some of them might have their exchange and email logins and passwords. This allowed the attackers to access their exchange accounts and withdraw money.
Currently people are holding cryptocurrencies on lending and staking platforms as well and it's enough to have access to email account to reset password on these sites and withdraw funds, since the confirmation often comes to that same email.

Also, don't underestimate people. They still fall victim to emails sent by Nigerian princes and send money to new investment platforms promoted by Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos Wink

That is my thinking too. It has been over a year since the LastPass hack happened.  There is no telling what kind of data the hackers got their hands on in that time and  id bet the farm that the database has spread all over the dark web at this point, with hundreds or maybe thousands of shady characters trying to crack it and to get into those accounts.

I bet most LastPass users probably didnt even know their info was stored in the cloud.  Your average LastPass user likely isnt tech savvy.  They installed the extension without thinking twice about where their data would go. The browser extension works in the background - and not much different than the built-in password manager.  And let us not forget that LastPass was supposed to be mega secure too.  Tons of pros said it was top of the line.  Whether thats true or not, LastPass was definitely the popular choice for managing passwords.
479  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: LastPass hack - move your crypto assets to a more secure place right now! on: October 30, 2023, 08:43:00 PM
The first thing anyone venturing into Internet related business should learn is security. By security, the issue of centralized and decentralized platforms should be taken seriously.  This hack have just proven once again that centralized platforms are not safe no matter how one view it.

I honestly wonder how someone will save sensitive information in am online platform. Anything connected to the Internet is already at risk, how much sensitive information that are willingly given to a third party.

Well, their loss is a lesson to others and I hope they recover the funds.

But it is a password manager! The main thing they are supposed to do is keep people's private stuff safe.  And LastPass was really popular and had a good reputation and tons of users and  so how could they mess up security that bad? I mean sure there are better options like that KeePassXC, but you still gotta trust whoever makes it.  I know its open source so anyone can check the code, but not everyone can do that.

To be honest, I dont even know if there is a viable alternative to a password manager, since we all deal with hundreds of different passwords almost every day.
480  Other / Meta / Re: Deleted post in a self-moderated thread. No link to the thread. on: October 30, 2023, 08:06:08 PM
It could be a great idea to have like a newsletter one a month of the most intriguing things going on in here Smiley
That'll turn into a tabloid filled with drama Tongue
~

And that would be bad because... ?

Considering the recent drama we have witnessed here, I would not mind having just a TL;DR version.  Wink
