521  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What if the internet permanently shuts down on: October 15, 2023, 04:57:19 PM
It'll seem as if we've suddenly gone back to the stone age, if these where to happen.

No, we would not go back to the stone age! There were still (depending on where you live) Bronze Age, Iron Age, Medieval period, Post-Medieval period, Industrial/Modern Age... So, you could argue that we might regress to the Industrial/Modern Age, but that would not be accurate either because the knowledge would still be around. Just because something suddenly stops working does not mean we cannot rebuild it. Think of it this way, if electric cars suddenly stopped working, would that mean humans never invented the wheel?

I'll focus on finance, so I'm thinking what will happen to the bitcoin inside wallets, what will happen to every fiat currency in bank accounts, if everything erases as a result of internet total breakdown?

If the internet were to stop working globally, Bitcoin would still exist on the Blockchain in individual nodes. The nodes would temporarily lose the ability to chat with each other, but theyd still have all the data stored up. The devs would have to find a new way to establish communication again, and it doesnt necessarily have to be over the internet. As for the banks, it would be more complicated because we do not know their internal organization. Nevertheless, the databases would still be stored on the servers, but they could not make no transactions or nothing.

Who do we hold responsible? I know that the internet technology is manmade, therefore it can not be hundred percent immune to faults and external attacks. And what if there is that less than one chance of it being faulty or compromised, what if that less than one  chance happens,? what will be the fate of the world that mainly depends on it to get things done? I'm no tech guru or a prophet of doom, but this are my thoughts and fears on the matter, although I sincerely hope that I'm very wrong on these thoughts.

I'd love to be enlightened better on why it can be impossible that the internet can never be permanently shutdown, having in mind the shortcomings that I've mentioned?

What shortcomings? Well the internet is not perfect, but it is designed to be pretty resilient. Theres a crap ton of experts and smart folks out there working to keep it running. and even if there are hiccups here and there, they usually find a way to keep things going.
522  Economy / Reputation / Re: Murat Scammed 62k Metropoly token on: October 15, 2023, 01:51:46 PM
Especially since this is not the first such case, as I understand it.
You mean his getting tokens and not sending to bounty hunters or saying that tokens were escrowed while they actually weren't? Or both?

No, I meant in the sense that this is not the first case of complaints about Murat's unprofessionalism in running bounty campaigns. Badly worded.

For example, there was this case when he deleted all participants from the signature campaign after 6 weeks of promotion.  I do not recall following the case back then, and I only came across it now. But surprisingly, none of the DT members took any action, and Murat did not provide any explanation in that thread either. Imagine what would happen if that was a campaign in the Services board!

His response on TG was: "There is less than 3 legit participants and we decided to cancel the signature campaign"  Huh

Then there was the case between him and bitbollo, when he left a retaliatory negative trust just because someone dared to question his managerial abilities.

Planning to sell the token is a wrong decision. You do not decide the fate of the tokens that are not yours.

Calculate the percentage of taken from the given tokens. Ask the hunters to send the gas fees. Whoever will send the fees, give them their tokens. You need to be more active in threads like this to understand and receive suggestions from forum members.

Exactly! The token sale should not have been his decision. As for gas fees, Murat never mentioned that it was an issue. Perhaps this was agreed upon as part of the deal between him and Metropoly.
523  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Seedphrase security - Pros and Cons of offline storage on: October 14, 2023, 09:58:56 PM
Forgot to mention, I am adding an additional layer of security to my password manager setup through the use of hidden wallet passphrases.

A passphrase is any word and/or number combination you make up yourself. As long as your passphrase is stored only in your head it will be impossible for anyone to know what it is.
This is also known as a 25th word (or 13th word if using 12 word seed).

Even if someone steals your seedphrase they will not be able to access (or even see) the funds stored in your hidden wallet(s) without knowing the passphrase.

Great, so you are aware of the passphrase? In that case, your seed phrase remains secure even in physical form, and your concerns about potential theft or accidental discovery are no longer relevant.

But think about this. Storing your wallet seed online or on a device hooked up to the internet opens it up to way more security risks than keeping that seed phrase offline and physical, right? I mean, even with a passphrase for extra protection there is still a chance someone could hack into your wallet if they have the computing power, which there is definitely no shortage of these days.  It really depends how complex your passphrase is and the encryption the password manager uses.  But if you go old school and keep that seed phrase offline? The chances of it getting swiped drop big time cause theres just not as many people who could get their hands on it.

Just saying, it is something to think about if you want to keep your funds truly safe and  there is tradeoffs either way - convenience versus security.
524  Economy / Reputation / Re: Murat Scammed 62k Metropoly token on: October 14, 2023, 09:16:48 PM
I hear what you are saying, Rikafip.  Bounty hunters also responsible amd have their own their part in how busted altcoin bounty campaigns are nowadays.  But seems to me Murat messed up here. Sure, he has status as a high-ranking member with serious trust points.  If this was some noob without no rep, their profile would be red already. Especially since this is not the first such case, as I understand it.

Technically speaking, this even deserves a Type 2 Flag, since he violated the implied agreement. Least thats how I get it.

@Murat care to explain escrow situation?

He was active again today, but he is not really taking it seriously enough to provide an explanation.
525  Other / Meta / Re: Should there be sub forums under Scam Accusations? on: October 14, 2023, 08:31:14 PM
The scam accusation section is enough to report scammers in my opinion it's better to add the scam accusation at the gambling section so that whomever that wants to visit any casino or gambling site can easily finds it there and then be very cautious of the one to get started with. There are some users who doesn't discover the accusations or regularly visit there to know what casinos that has good reputation to gamble on. Additional subforum can either makes it complicated whereby there may be some section where they won't visit at all, just the above user said of the investigation board I can't remember when last I have posted there or even posted there before. Although is a nice idea anyway.

Didn't think about that.
Possibly a separate board about gambling scam accusations under gambling and all the others in a generic scam board since it does look like 75%+ of the scam complaints are about casinos.

Separating the gambling accusations from the rest of the scam accusations seems like a pretty good idea to me.  I was not around back when the board was first created, but looking at some of those old topics it definitely seems like it started off being a place for people to call out scams happening between members here on the forum.  But over time, especially once we got that whole Gambling section and tons of crypto casinos popped up everywhere it kinda shifted to be all about shady stuff those casinos are up to.  But not everybody here cares about gambling stuff.  So cleaning up the scam accusations board to just be for non-gambling scams could make things easier to follow for most folks.

Plus it will keep things more focused instead of having accusations about like a million different things all jumbled together.
526  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: You are also like them? on: October 14, 2023, 07:48:25 PM
Haha, yeah those YouTube experts crack me up too.  I wouldnt put any money on what they say either.  But not all technical analysis is like that.  There are some skilled analysts out there who actually know their stuff and dont just spout nonsense.  You just gotta dig through the goofballs to find the real deal.  Easier said than done I know... Like trying to find a diamond in a mountain of rocks.  Most of the rocks are just rocks. . .

I dont have the patience for it myself.  But for some folks sifting through all those predictions and charts is half the fun.  To each their own I guess.  Me, I just hope I can find an analyst or two I can actually trust, otherwise I would just be throwing darts blindfolded.
527  Other / Off-topic / Re: Youtube alternative supports BTC donations - FreeTube on: October 13, 2023, 09:59:57 PM
I got a frequent notification recently that the ad blocker is against the Youtube ToS thus preventing me from watching videos.
Which adblocker are you using? I am asking because I haven't seen that notification yet and I am naturally using adblocker because without them its bascially impossible to watch YouTube anymore.

I use the AdblockPlus addon on the Chrome browser, and recently, a warning popup appears before every video view. I have the Stands addon installed on another computer but have not tested if the warning appears there as well.

Since I read recently that YouTube plans do disable all addblockers and that they won't work for that purpose anymore, I will probably give this FreeTube a chance. My main problem with it (and the reason i haven't tried it so far) is that you have to install an app in order to use it, instead just having a browser version.

You can check out the Ividius project. It is an open-source alternative front-end to YouTube. There are many instances available for free use, both on the clearnet and on the Tor network: https://docs.invidious.io/instances/ Although, For those who want full privacy, I suggest the self-hosted version.
528  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: 500.casino csgo500.com $1,500 was confiscated for no reason on: October 13, 2023, 09:00:13 PM
I suggest moving this topic in the Gambling or Scam Accusations board if you want to see any responses to this. Also, 500.casino has an official thread on the forum, so dropping a message there could help you get more exposure.

530  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Low cost but effective solutions to gambling addiction on: October 13, 2023, 08:45:47 PM
I totally get that therapy can be helpful for dealing with gambling addiction.  But it can also be expensive for a lot of people. Although I guess gambling costs money too, so if you are willing to drop cash at the casino, you could probably swing some therapy sessions if you really wanted to.
Another option might be looking into support groups.  There is a bunch online and in-person for gambling addiction and Im sure you could find something that works.

Really though what matters most is sticking with it and being ready to change, whatever path you take.  You gotta keep at it if you really want your life back.  Thats the key.
531  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Possible fraud on: October 13, 2023, 08:16:18 PM
Hello I started to trade with cryptocurrencies recently and I read a lot about possible scams. I heard about KuCoin that is legitimate cryptocurrency exchange, but recently I got a link ~ and I'm not sure whether is genuine or a fraud.

You should be a little more careful when sharing links publicly, especially to suspicious sites that could potentially be involved in phishing or host various types of malware. Best to obfuscate it or enclose it in [ code ] tags to prevent accidental clicking.

As for the mentioned website, my anti-virus software has flagged it as infected with a malware, so I strongly recommend avoiding it.

532  Economy / Reputation / Re: Murat Scammed 62k Metropoly token on: October 12, 2023, 11:15:57 PM
Why would the bounty manager state escrow at the beginning and then change it later. Originally when the thread was created it was showing escrowed:
I was about to ask Stalker22 where he saw that part about bounty been escrowed as I couldn't find any traces of it in the bounty thread. Is it possible to see when exactly he changed the title? It is one thing if it was changed right after bounty campaign started and another if it was changed months later.
That will be difficult to know with certainty. Murat posted on 24th December 2022 with [Bounty] Metropoly.io Social Media Campaign [$100k Tokens] [ESCROWED] but the next post in that thread was a different member on 11th May 2023 with [Bounty] Metropoly.io Social Media Campaign [$100k Tokens]
~

Yes, exactly! This means that Murat changed the topic title sometime between December 24, 2022, and May 11, 2023, but definitely after he said the campaign was over on December 24.

And this is what he posted to his followers in the Tokensfund.io TG group last year:

https://t.me/Tokensfund_io/21447

If he enticed bounty participants with a misleading promise about escrowed funds, it implies that he deceived them and shares some responsibility for them not getting paid for their efforts. An even bigger problem is that he had some tokens available in escrow, but for some reason, he chose not to distribute them to the bounty participants. Those tokens are currently worthless, but as Rikafip pointed out, at some point, they were valued at tens of thousands of dollars, which is not an insignificant sum.

From my perspective, a major factor contributing to the mess in the altcoins bounty arena is the lack of responsibility and professionalism among bounty managers who neglect their essential due diligence. This seems to be just one example of that.

All this is evidence that merit system do not work and is useless.

The merit system was introduced to put the brakes on shitposters moving up the ranks on here.  It was never meant to be some kind of fact-checking mechanism.

Take you for instance - before we had merits, you would  probably be on your way to Sr Member already by now!  so I would say the merit system is working just how it should.

Anyway, how much merit did that post even get from the higher-ranked members? None!
534  Economy / Reputation / Re: Murat Scammed 62k Metropoly token on: October 10, 2023, 07:59:03 PM
I  a few times in the past.

1. It's not worth it to send $2 to each person.

2. I plan to sell the tokens at a reasonable price and distribute everyone.

There is no other option because the team is not responding after raising a good chunk of money.

Thanks @Little Mouse

Where did you answer? I did not see any updates in the bounty thread. Your last post:

campaign ended, calculation is ongoing.

What was the token value after the campaign ended? Why not distribute the tokens then?

Who do you plan to sell them to now that they hold no value? And is that really your decision to make?

And why did you lie in the bounty campaign that the funds were escrowed ($100k)?
535  Other / Off-topic / Re: Youtube alternative supports BTC donations - FreeTube on: October 09, 2023, 09:44:32 PM
That sounds awesome! It is super annoying when sites get clogged with ads and tracking stuff.  FreeTube sounds like a great choice, especially since they focus on privacy and  open source.

I am definitely gonna check out their GitHub! Thanks, @dkbit98!

Any thoughts ?

All private keys should be stored entirely offline. What is the point of geographically distributing keys if they are kept online? The Internet does not respect borders or geographical distances.

Store it offline on my iPhone? Your iPhone is not an offline device. It is safer to use hardware wallets or dedicated offline storage devices.
537  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Will my private key be seen by everyone on the network? on: October 09, 2023, 02:33:24 PM
So when verifying the transaction using your private key will the private key be known or seen by others on the network? If so then is it not risky letting others know our private keys.

The private key should remain secret and you should never share it with anyone.  That is an important part for safety of your cryptocurrency.

What you give out to people is your public address, which is derived from your private key and  when you use your private key to sign transaction on the blockchain, it lets the network know that you signed it with your private key without you having to show the actual private key to anyone.  That is a core thing of how asymmetric encryption works that makes cryptocurrency secure.

So remember, keep that private key private and dont show it to anybody no matter what.

And also in a case where the owner loses his/her private key and is unable to verify the transaction what will happen to the coins. Are they gone forever? Or is there a way to recover the private key.

The private key is not used to verify, but to cryptographically sign transactions. Without a private key, you will no longer be able to sign transactions, therefore you will not be able to spend coins from your address.

Hello everyone,
~

Hey there! Welcome to bicointalk.org. This forum is just like other ones with people using it daily without issue.  Makes me wonder why you think you need special help getting started.

Why not take a little exploration journey on your own? But yeah, ask away if you really got questions!
539  Other / Meta / Re: Does deleting our own posts harms our acccount ? on: October 08, 2023, 04:59:09 PM
Anyhow I want to know that if we delete our posts ourselves, does it have a bad effect on our account and can we still get tagged or something or it is completely normal ?

Deleting some old posts likely won't get you tagged. But if you erase a ton of stuff you posted, people might wonder why and the internet never forgets. Things you put out there are hard to take back completely.  Here on this forum, we have at least two archives keeping copies of posts even if you delete them from your profile. So once you hit publish, you cannot really hide it after that.
540  Other / Meta / Re: Should Merit-Sources use feelings when giving out Merit? on: October 07, 2023, 09:13:19 PM
Merit-sources are supposed to look at the quality of a post, not who wrote it.  The whole point of merit is to reward good post that helps the community, even if it comes from someone you do not like.  but let us be real, we all have our preferences and can be hard to be totally fair and unbiased.
I mean there arent any hard rules here. Some merit-sources try harder than others to stay objective.  The important thing is using merit to recognize people who are making this place better, not just your buddies.  Easier said than done though.  We are only human.  Wink
