1181  Economy / Marketplace / Re: coinexchanger.com is now the 2nd exchange with the most BTC Liquidity on: March 03, 2012, 03:35:23 AM
You are really claiming that you are the 2nd most liquid exchange, when your bid/ask spreads are currently $0.90?  Do you know what liquidity means?

Nefario, this was directed at CoinExchanger.  I have confidence that Intersango is in fact the 2nd largest exchange.

Embarrassed ooops, thought that was at me.

No, I'm claiming the largest exchange for both Euro & GBP, and second largest USD exchange in terms of volume.

Spreads on Intersango are actually smaller than they seem as there are plenty of trading bots that pick up new orders within their range.
1183  Economy / Marketplace / Re: GLBSE and the Linode security breaches on: March 03, 2012, 01:37:03 AM
Not being affected by any given security breach does not necessarily indicate your service is secure.

It seems like you are taking advantage of others' misfortune to plug your own brand.  Not the way I want the services I use to promote themselves.

Come on nef, you are better than this.

Not really, this was an announcement letting GLBSE users know that we were not effected. A lot of services were hit by this, and if we had used Linode it might also have been us.

In terms of security, GLBSE by it's very design is considerably more secure than a traditional web-app. It's just a pain in the ass to use and develop for.

Mathew has pointed out a number of details about coinexchanger, which are great, thank you for that Mathew.

One error I would like to point out about this post is that coinexchanger is not the second largest exchange.

Actually that honor goes to Intersango, the second largest USD exchange after MtGox, largest Euro and GBP exchange.

I should point out that I'm the community manager for Intersango.

1185  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Exchange service, Bitcoins and Paypal on: March 03, 2012, 12:14:44 AM
The problem is chargebacks, paypal, credit cards etc. can be charged back by the customer, that is after they've made a purchase using paypal or their credit card they can just call up their company and say it wasn't them or even they changed their mind.

The result is that the paypal/creditcard customer get their money back, the merchant loses the money AND the goods, and probably also face a fine of some kind.

Once bitcoins are sent, they're gone, no charge back (merchants love this), accepting payment for bitcoins with paypal or creditcards is likely going to result in the vendor losing their bitcoin and their other money.

What happens is scammers use stolen creditcards or paypal accounts to buy the coins (which are then theirs), and the real owner of the card or paypal account cancels the payment.

Never accept paypal or creditcard for bitcoin.

If you want to buy bitcoins, use a bitcoin exchange. Right now the easiest and cheapest to use is Intersango, they have Euro, GBP, and USD bank accounts that you can transfer directly into relatively cheap and quickly.

Will we be having fewer sql database lockups in the new version?

0 is the expected number of DB lockups in the new version.

Just an update on where I'm currently at, the demo site will be updated in a couple of hours, hacking away, wired up to my eyeballs on Rockstar XDurance(think RedBull but strong, bigger can, and cheaper).
1187  Economy / Goods / Re: I want to buy what you can make! on: March 02, 2012, 09:04:20 PM
Im not sure on the legality, but I make my own wines and hard ciders. The Cider is a little strong (35 proof) and I have made some wonderful vinegar by accident a few times too.

You could start up a bitcoin based p2p wine ... network, you could call it "The Grape Vine"  Tongue
1188  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: GLBSE 2.0 open for testing on: March 02, 2012, 07:36:06 PM
Actually what I meant was all the bugs found thus far are still there, and don't need to be tested for (I've not fixed them, but been adding needed features).

We can re-test them sure but the result is they're already going to be there.
1189  Economy / Speculation / Re: Good news: Zhoutong will buy 40k bitcoins to return to his client on: March 02, 2012, 02:59:02 PM
The most likely action the thief will take will be to use the coins on SilkRoad. They don't need to cash out on any of the normal exchange.

Right now they're worth less than a clean bitcoin but still have value, and will be traded into oblivion in the black markets until they eventually seep out into the general economy.
1190  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looking for exchanger seems hard on: March 02, 2012, 02:55:48 PM
OP's best choice is to use Intersango or CryptoExchange. MtGox is biggest for USD but you have to do an international wire transfer which is quite expensive, as the amount isn't large I would recommend someone with an account based in the US.

With Intersango you can also trade bitcoin for GBP, EUR and PLN if you want to play the markets after getting bitcoin.

I'm the community manager for Intersango.

GLBSE is a bitcoin related project. -- edit- moved to bitcoin discussion.
1192  Economy / Marketplace / GLBSE and the Linode security breaches on: March 02, 2012, 02:26:29 AM
I would like to inform users and customers of GLBSE that we are not effected by the recent security breaches of Linode and those services that use them.

We don't use Linode, and take considerable measures to keep our customers bitcoin safe.

The vast majority of bitcoin entrusted with GLBSE is kept in a secure, backed up, offline wallet. We don't run hot wallets with large balances, and since the very beginning of GLBSE security has been our #1 concern.

1193  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoinica Warning: Please do not re-use any old Bitcoin deposit addresses on: March 02, 2012, 02:13:48 AM
This doesn't make sense, why would you have a hot wallet with 10K BTC? Why would it ONLY be stored on a Linode VPS?

Hadn't bitcoinica gone all quiet for some time before this happened?

I think this is just a handy way to release some old bad news.

Certain functionality is needed, IPO's haven't been done yet, etc.
1195  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Speaking at TEDx on: March 01, 2012, 04:23:34 PM
I was just after getting off the phone with the organisers, the videos will be available on the TED website in about 2 weeks.

He tells me that my talk went ok, guess I'm my own worse critic.

I've got a few notes of the Leeds Ludos, I didn't want to spend them, they look too nice, I'll get a pic of them up later today.

So this isnt the TED that I goto in Long Beach, correct?

BTW: I had an hour long talk about bitcoin with the head of the company in charge of filming the TED talks in LB. Was VERY interested and I am setting up a demo for early next week to show him and a few select others the glory that is bitcoin.

I'm fine in front of a couple of people, I can talk until I'm dizzy, and the same if it's a group of Chinese students. On front of that group my mind just went blank.

Right now I don't think there is a video up, in maybe a day or so.
