just upgraded firmware to ckolivas latest version:  http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/avalon/20130627/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory.bin

despite multiple restarts, reboots, hard reboots i still don't get hashing

any suggestions?:

Did you un-check the box that said "keep settings"?

no, i was told to keep it checked Sad

that's what the wiki says to do too.

I'd suggest you try reflashing with "keep settings" UN-checked. This will reset your machine to defaults so you will have to set your password, network settings, turn off the WIFI, etc... just like you did when you first received your machine.

Yes,

If you are teacher and showing kids about cryptocurrencies.

Even build one with them K1 Nano's.

It would probably fly over most people's heads, let alone children..

We will see in September when we introduce it to our class of 13 year olds. I bet you are wrong.

I'd be very interested to see the contrast between the average South-East Asia classroom and the average North America classroom...

In my experience and observation, NA school system in general is less about learning and more about popularity and social status.

Sample conversation with a typical NA 13 year old:
Teacher: ... and this is a bitcoin miner. It performs millions of calculations every second to...
Student: (interrupts) Will it update my Facebook?
Teacher: ?? Well, no, but it has the potential to completely revolutionize ...
Student: (interrupts again) Useless.

How long is it taking for peoples units to be delivered from 1st scan?

in my case, first scan was monday june 24 @16:06 local time Beijing

delivered was tuesday june 25 @ 16:28 mountain standard time, north america

this was DHL
2085  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official Avalon Technical Support Thread on: June 30, 2013, 09:11:52 AM
what options are you using?

right now, my options are --quiet --avalon-temp 0 --avalon-cutoff 45  ... fans are reporting 3840 rpm (not actually that loud, unless you're a sissy  Tongue ) --- temp 1 is at 22 and temp 2 and 3 are at 37 (AC pointing directly at the intake)

Well, the -71 errors were something like:
Code:
[29560.890000] ftdi_sio ttyUSB0: failed to get modem status: -71
[29560.900000] usb 1-1: clear tt 1 (8090) error -71
And the updated cgminer code bypasses the ftdi_sio driver entirely now since it uses direct USB, so there is one less potential point of failure (but of course that doesn't make it a fix for all potential USB issues!)

whatever you did, it worked like magic!
Code:
Elapsed        MHSav     FoundBlocks    Getworks   Accepted  Rejected   HW   Utility   Discarded   Stale
8h 56m 11s   81655.25    0              1094         10024       26    8566  18.69       2108         0

Thanks again CK!

I'm not an expert at anything. It's Saturday night after the bar and I might be drunk. I might not even understand what I'm writing and I have no data to back up my thoughts, but here they are anyways..

My feeling is that we are approaching a massive sell-off in all markets. Cash will be king, for a while. Perhaps bitcoin will be a form of cash during this time, perhaps not.

For a short time, there will be some incredible opportunities to buy certain commodities, companies, or properties, at extremely low prices as people are forced to sell almost everything they own simply to feed their families.

The problem I see happening is that people will expect a recovery, a return to 'normal'. I don't think most people realize that what we have been experiencing over the last 30+ years; what most people think is 'normal' is simply massive inflation and debt accumulation and this is not sustainable.

This party is going to end. The music will stop. All that will be left is the scrambling for chairs.

<snip>
It constantly restarted, due to the dreaded -71 errors.
</snip>
Thanks for the workaround, good to know there is a way to bypass the TP-Link.

just a note about these -71 errors, I was getting the same thing (see   https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=156323.msg2611536#msg2611536  )

ckolivas' new firmware 0627 seems to have fixed this somehow, I've been over 5 hours now without a restart, no more -71 errors, running at 345 mhz - average speed reported 81660 - pool (bitminter) has been guesstimating my speed between 70 and 90+ so it seems to be working quite well,

just wanted to note this in case anyone else is having constant restarts due to -71 errors.

Order #29xx made on February 18, 2013. Order status: completed.

What is the transaction number when you paid?

Date: February 18, 2013 06:28:35 PM

I think Avalon ships according to the transaction number.

just for you (since I've noticed not many have been providing this info) here's mine.

I received mine a few days ago, I expect/hope you will get yours soon!

*NOTE* one thing I noticed and really worried about when I placed my order was that I neglected to add a fee, and I remember my transaction took a very long time to get into the blockchain. (over an hour for my first confirmation)  -- as you can imagine this was quite nerve wracking at the time and I have second guessed myself ever since... but it appears as though it had no effect on the shipping queue. In my case at least, it appears that I was placed in the queue as soon as I hit the button, not when the payment cleared.

Take heart, and may your avalon arrive soon and hash fast like a cheetah! (*side note, most batch 2's can hit 345 MHz no problem, so if you were expecting 66 GH/s you may be pleased to be surprised with 75+ sustained*)

2089  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official Avalon Technical Support Thread on: June 29, 2013, 06:25:11 PM
F1 fuse is not on the board! So much for that little chance of fixing the problem.
Flashing to 05-19 firmware has made it impossible to log on. I can see Lucy for half a second about 1 of 10 attempts to login.
Before, I could login about 50% of the times, but now not even once and I've been trying for over half hour!

I'm going to try different psu in a few days. All stores are closed now for the weekend.

If new psu won't help, then I will have to send it back to China. Really not looking forward to that.... imagine how long it will take to get another unit....  Undecided

...and I will also try Con's donation pool settings  Smiley

Hi Humax, just to clarify. I understand you have 2 avalons (I'm assuming both are the black model with the F1 fuse removed) -- one works fine right out of the box, and the other was restarting all the time? please let me know if I'm wrong in my assumptions.

I have seen the Lucy stuff when trying to connect on the previous IP address after the device defaulted back to 192.168.0.100

One thing to check, turn the device on, try to ping the original address as well as the default address and see if you get a response.. if you do get a response from some address, unpulg the avalon and try to ping that same address, if you still get a response, you may have a network conflict.

-edit- to be certain if this is the case, connect to the device with a laptop via a crossover cable and try to ping or connect...

(*my apologies if this is too basic and you've already tried*)
2090  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official Avalon Technical Support Thread on: June 29, 2013, 04:39:04 PM
I've just tried to re-flash the 0627 firmware with "keep-settings" disabled - turned off the WIFI (removed the interface in the GUI) and I tried running with Con's donation pool settings (maybe there's something wrong with the way I set up my pools?) -- he deserves it anyways. -- been running half an hour now, got my fingers crossed!

:UPDATE: running over an hour now, Humax's comment below gave me the idea to try turning system log to "warning" to remove the news.info logs, didn't work, maybe needs reboot to apply?
--- new update, just restarted again, right after I added my bitminter pool... I'm going to try to run it to ozcoin with similar settings to what Con was using and see how that goes  Huh
Thank you very much. I definitely saw a spike in my donation hashrate for that hour, so it should be mining fine for you now.

No, seriously, THANK YOU!

I mimicked the settings you had in the defaults (including the 56 LSD setting on my ozcoin account) and it's been almost 2 hours without a restart *and I have set to 300 now (was on 282 while trying to troubleshoot)

On another note, is it possible to change the way balancing works? For example, if you could set 3 or 4 different pools, set it to balance, and then set an arbitrary limit to one or more of those pools... this would allow me to send 1 or 2 GH/s your way, while still mining at 25-30 or so on my own pools...

Just a suggestion   Grin
2091  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: June 29, 2013, 04:28:44 PM
just finished upgrading one the same as i have the other 2, when i power it back on all looks fine, but it never connects to cgminer and the green light indicator just stays on.......

any ideas?

USB!
Cable is unpluged or loose

And connect all cables as advised - mandatory

they are all connected...... something bad has happened though!

I tried flashing firmware and now it is just stuck on the flashing firmware screen!

if you unchecked the "keep settings" box, your device network settings will be back to default. try to connect on 192.168.0.100 and see if it responds
2092  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: June 29, 2013, 04:25:07 PM
Better to connect all the cables and use separate for each pci-e connector. This way the load to each one will be less - you're going to draw 600+ W from PSU, do i need to tell you more?

I also replaced PSU to AX860 in my batch 1 unit.

And connect all cables as advised - mandatory

Hi invader, and loshia, thanks for your insight. I just wanted to verify that bolded part above.. Do you mean that I should connect to all 3 PCIe connectors on the power distribution board?

My batch 2 miner came with 850W PSU and was only connected to 2 of the connectors on the PDB. I have since upgraded the PSU and I have an extra PCIe connector that I could connect to that board.

Should I do this? Have you tried it? Does it make any difference either way?

Thanks.
2093  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official Avalon Technical Support Thread on: June 29, 2013, 01:14:38 PM
Thank you both SolarSilver and HELP.org!

Unfortunately, still not very clear what causes the problem. It stops after a few minutes, then it starts hashing again. Hickups all the time....

After wrestling with this "problem unit" I decided to work on my second unit. Just in a few minutes with the same settings, it works just fine!
So 1 Avalon is working as it should and this one is giving me trouble. Orange led goes on and off in few minutes interval. Working unit just the green led lighting up.

Maybe Yifu has been mining to aggressively with this unit and it's like my old dad now........... Undecided

This sounds the same as the problem I'm having (Feb 18 order batch 2, just got it a few days ago) -- anyways let me know if you're seeing similar symptoms..

Symptoms: CGminer restarts intermittently (sometimes will last more than an hour, but usually restarts after 20 minutes or so)

What I've tried: Disable WIFI, disable NTP, opened the case and checked all connectors, replace PSU, replace router, update firmware with 2013.06.27 - (keep settings)

*after updating the firmware, it was ok for a little more than 2 hours before I went to bed, but then I checked this morning and it had re-started within the last 20 minutes  Angry

system logs:
-- this is what I was seeing with the original firmware (0519) - pages and pages of this:
Code:
[29560.890000] ftdi_sio ttyUSB0: failed to get modem status: -71
[29560.900000] usb 1-1: clear tt 1 (8090) error -71
[29560.910000] ftdi_sio ttyUSB0: failed to get modem status: -71
[29560.920000] usb 1-1: clear tt 1 (8090) error -71
[29560.920000] ftdi_sio ttyUSB0: failed to get modem status: -71
[29560.930000] usb 1-1: clear tt 1 (8090) error -71
[29561.050000] ftdi_sio ttyUSB0: failed to get modem status: -71
[29561.050000] usb 1-1: clear tt 1 (8090) error -71
^^ I don't know what that means, but it made me think to try replacing the router (it was quite old anyways) -- but it still re-starts all the time.

-- now I don't get that message anymore but I do get a ton of this..
Code:
Sat Jun 29 06:42:01 2013 news.info crond[596]: crond: USER root pid 2082 cmd /usr/bin/cgminer-monitor
Sat Jun 29 06:44:01 2013 news.info crond[596]: crond: USER root pid 2105 cmd /usr/bin/cgminer-monitor

Sat Jun 29 06:50:01 2013 news.info crond[596]: crond: USER root pid 2132 cmd /usr/bin/cgminer-monitor
^^ that just goes on and on, I'm not sure if that's normal or not.

--- update, ozcoin mining on port 80 was doing fine, tested bitminter on port 5050 and it's been over 2 hours ok. Starting to wonder if my ISP is limiting or watching port 3333 somehow as every time I try to mine on that port cgminer reboots after a short time... dunno, could be anything
2094  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL SC Singles running smoothly. ~59 GH/s each at 278 watts each on: June 29, 2013, 12:13:26 AM
thank you for this TWMZ. I have been searching for some real power numbers for the singles.

now to extrapolate to a little single (if these ever get shipped) I would assume little more than half, probably 150W each is a generous estimate.

I'm guessing you run each single from a dedicated PCIe cable. What are the connectors like on the ASIC end? is it 2*6 pin connectors? or 1*8 and 1*6 -- or 2*8?

Do you expect one would be able to run 2 little singles from one PCIe cable?
2095  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: June 28, 2013, 04:00:55 AM
Its just the stock PSU on the batch 2 units and some of the batch 1s (though most batch 1s use 650 I believe).

Worth mentioning I blew up a 750 Watt stock PSU today running at 362 Mhz in a 3 module unit. I wouldn't recommend running 4 modules with an 860 watt based on this.

what brand psu?
what does it say for 12V rail? how many amps ?

---------------------
All batch 2 PSU are NOT the same, mine came with this ... so I'm curious, what exactly was the make and model of your PSU? Was it single rail? how many amps rated?
2096  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: June 28, 2013, 03:18:43 AM
Anyone still getting constant restarts? Mine is batch 2, shipped June 24... I turned up the minimum difficulty to 64 (btcguild) but it still restarts every hour or so, sometimes only lasts 20 minutes between restarts...

It has not yet frozen or required hard boot, Firmware I think was 0519?? I can't remember exactly. it was set to 300 by default, I tried 282, no change. I haven't flashed it yet, I'm leery of flashing firmware to a device that's restarting randomly before I open it up and check connections and such...

Now it's apart and I'm connecting a 1200W silverstone (single 100A 12v rail) to take that out of the equation, but when I opened it up, it had a 850W Enermax with a single 70A rail, it's chinese (model ENM850EWT-S RG)  ... That's about the point I decided to ask for help, because in ten years of building computers I have never once had an Enermax PSU be the problem.  Huh

Connectors look solid, nothing loose inside, I'm going to put it back together and see what happens. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (first time ASIC here)

Don't use the WiFi -- use ethernet only. problem fixed

First thing I did, when I was setting the static IP, was disable the wifi... I only turned it off in the web interface, do I need to unplug it or something?

______________________
*EDIT* I just noticed, there is an additional pci-e connector on the power distribution board, it was not connected, (the original PSU had only 2 PCI connectors) -- I'm assuming that this is for 4 module operation, but would it hurt to connect this as well? might this help with overclocking the modules?

I have my tracking number but it does not appear in dhl tracking system :/
Poland speaking here Wink
I would open a ticket (with avalon) and ask if they made a typo in your notification email. Ask them to verify that you have the proper tracking number.

As long as your address is correct you should be receiving your avalon within a couple days. (mine arrived less than 6 hours after receiving the email notice, but I live in a shipping hub of my country)
2099  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: June 27, 2013, 12:13:00 AM
thinking of upgrading my PSU. just want to verify that 1000W will be enough to power 4 modules? (assuming that either Avalon will start selling upgrade modules or clones will become available eventually)

Also, I'm looking at getting seasonic 1050XM -- anyone have any real-life experience or opinions of this PSU?
2100  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon batch [2] countdown! on: June 26, 2013, 11:58:12 PM
Has anyone examined if there is a pattern of countries being shipped to first?  Perhaps it is logistically easier for customs paperwork or other hassles to ship all orders going to one country first, then the next, etc.  I have no idea if this is the case, but just throwing that out there.

This sounds reasonable to me, I imagine it would be much easier to ship say, 50 units all to 1 country than trying to ship to 20 different countries at once.

Also likely much cheaper.
