Thank reporting this.
I don't think there can be more red a flag sticked to Intersango than their current Bitcoinica flag.

Given the nature of the beast, I'm surprised we don't have one already. I would add to it a sub "personal computer security" for general use bitcoin. And a more enterprise level sub for web-services dealing with bitcoins transactions. I was to post this there but found no places to post it. "OAuth 2.0 and the Road to Hell" http://hueniverse.com/2012/07/oauth-2-0-and-the-road-to-hell/

I'm all for it, except the speculation sub.
The newbies forum could also benefits from an "introduce yourself" sub.
Speculation is most of the time used by traders to try moving the price by influencing others, It's almost a complete fiasco. And no, for greater effect, they will not be posting their speculation in "non-general reasoning" they'll be posting it in the main bitcoin discussion sub.

... Personally I'm staying out of this as I'm not qualified to make judgements and adequate people are already involved. Here's an extract from an article I wrote: In 1992, Stella Liebeck bought coffee at McDonalds. She spilled the hot drink on herself and later claiming injury against McDonalds because the coffee was too hot, initiated a lawsuit for $1 million. She is the poster child for frivolous litigation in the US.
What I failed to mention is that the coffee was served at over 90 degrees celsius and having suffered 3rd degree burns over 16% of her body, she spent 8 days in hospital for skin grafting and required 2 years of medical treatment. When she asked McDonalds to pay $20k to cover the remaining medical expenses which her insurance wouldn’t cover, they rebuked her with an offer of $800. During the case she offered to settle out of court with them for $20k and later $300k which they refused both times. During the case it was found there were 700 other similar court cases where McDonalds had settled out of court. Why start a thread only to say : "Personally I'm staying out of this" while it has been Intersango's status-quo for the last 2 months ? This empty statement is only adding gas to the fire. The only similarity I found with your McDonald case is that I'd like more than the price of the coffee refunded. And I'd expect that compensation to come from all negligent parties involved. PS : I have 32 page of new comments about this to go through, What make you think I'd want to read about a McDonald Coffee spill ?

I feel compelled to write, that people should be very careful about their words and actions. ... All it will take is one Bitcoin-related murder, and things will change in our community forever. ...
Good advice, the community could change in a good way too. It's sometime impressive the things peoples think getting away with. (with a legal slap on the hand)

cryptoanarchist, you really have a warped mind.
By holding such unfounded views over incidents like this, you actually help the government when they do act in an underhand way. You make it easier for people to dismiss potentially valid arguments as crackpot theories and turn people away from critical thinking. Well done if that is your intention.
Please, if you honestly want to hold the government to account for its actions focus your mind more - living in such a fantasy world plays into their hands.
+1 ,people like him hurt Bitcoin, and they don't even realize what they're doing. Sad. Crypto once again you're a FUCKING IDIOT. And anyone trying to dispel me as "angry".. Just stfu.... Watch the news, and see why this guys an idiot. FlipPro Do you have anything to say other than trowing insults and telling us to watch the news ? How many time do we have to tell you, only idiots listen to MSM news (for what it is) ?

Let's say you're the sane one here, What would be the point of it?
If they wanted to disarm the people they could just introduce more legislation without discussion, they do it all the time. If they wanted more people with guns they would create some form of home invasion.
All this sensation will do is draw up more aggressive opinion on both sides of the fence. What are these evil geniuses trying to do?
While way to early to pull the false flag card, researching this with doubts is a good thing. IMO, it would most likely be to add "real" and thus strengthening the message in the movie. Everybody seeing this movie from now on will think about the "real event". People staging these events are in for the "very" long con, If you'd understand how movies help molding mindsets for future mind control you'd be at bit more suspicious of these event. Non-existing deaths, well this is far-fetch, It could have been staged with real casualties. . We're not talking "staged" on the same level here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOvGfatjPMcPs : I hate A. Jones and so I mostly skipped at above video (a month ago), I thought "crazy".

Dude you are a fucking MORON. *HONESTLY*I wish I had the time to tell you the 1,000,000,001 reasons why.... P.S You must not be from the US for you to think this was a staged event... or not following the news properly...or just plane old fucking stupid... =\ Most likely all three. Hey calm down, There has been false flags much harder to pull up that this one ... and they succeeded. Consider yourself lucky to get viewpoints from people who don't go blindly with what the news tell you to think. 95% of US news are pure BS. Stop listening to them if you don't want to become "plane old fucking stupid". Ps : I do not care about this event in the slightest and I have yet to see how it has anything to do with bitcoins.

Lets suppose the speculation is .... tl;dr - The Pirate has a big incentive to destroy Bitcoin itself.

He's already invested into GPUMAX afaik, wouldn't he be sell it before ? ... Well whatever, I don't even know why people responded to this OP. ... a few more ignore on my list.

... Hardware Wallets
A hardware wallet is about the size of a DSL modem. It's composed of a very simple cpu/motherboard, small solid state hard drive, NIC, probably an LCD screen, and a few ports as I'll describe. It has a clean Linux install and a Bitcoin client. MSRP about $70.00.
Little Timmy tells grandma what to do:
Okay, grandma, just go to BestBuy, or this website and buy the bitcoin solid wallet (hmm i like how that sounds!). Open the package and plug it in. Connect the cable to the Internet and press the "on" button. When the light turns green it's ready to use!
On the screen you will see it says "receive address" followed by a long string of characters. Don't worry about that right now. In the package you will see two USB sticks. Take one and plug it into the USB slot. Press the top button that says "backup wallet". When the light turns green remove the USB stick, plug in the other USB stick and press the "backup wallet" button again. Put the USB sticks in two separate safe places, like a bank safe deposit box for one, and home safe for the other.
Now you're ready to use Bitcoin!
Go to WalletBit.com and sign up with an email and password. You will also have to go to Mt.Gox and sign up to buy some bitcoins, but for now I'll just send you some to get started and you can pay me later. In fact, I've already sent coins to your WalletBit account because I know your email address!
Log in to WalletBit and you'll see them there! You can pay anybody just by using their email address.
What's the SolidWallet for? Oh that's when you're ready to really get into Bitcoin and you will hold lots of them. Remember your "receive address" it showed? Well, when you do buy lots of bitcoins, like on Mt.Gox, you will send them to that address. It's easy. Then when you want to fill up your balance at WalletBit just log in there and click "Deposit Bitcoins". Unplug your computer keyboard and plug it into the back of the SolidWallet and press the "Send" button on top. Type the long address shown by WalletBit, just do it carefully and double check it. Press the "BTC amount" button on top and type the number of bitcoins you want to deposit. Press the "Send" button again. That's it! Your SolidWallet screen will show your new balance. ______...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtdWHFwmd2o&feature=player_detailpage#t=25sOMG, this is what you'll sound like to grandma ! I must have been for too long in your first scenario, I didn't understand the 2nd at all. All I can tell from it is that it's about 3 time longer in terms of words / instructions. Oh and what happen when someone steal the "Hardware Wallet" ?

Yes, this is bad for bitcoin users. They don't want the meaning of a bitcoin to change every 4 years.
replace satoshi with bitcoin so 1 satoshi = 100 000 000 bitcoin. And have all current BTC be 10 8 more. At this point I should just shut up ...

The "commonly" perceived meaning of the currency unit name “Bitcoin” does not lead itself to being widely used if it’s value compared to other currencies end up being X orders of magnitude higher.
When not used in the context of computing, the "Bit and Coin" components taken apart will commonly refer and be perceived as : “a small unit” + “with a value of no more than 1$.”
Definitions (Wikionary) :
“Bit” Something small • A small amount of something. There were bits of paper all over the floor. Does your leg still hurt? / Just a bit now. I have done my bit, I expect you to do yours.
• Specifically, a small amount of time. I'll be there in a bit, I need to take care of something first. He was here just a bit ago, but it looks like he's stepped out. “Coin” : Money in the form of a small round disk, (small nominal value of generally no more than 1$) • (money) A piece of currency, usually metallic and in the shape of a disc, but sometimes polygonal, or with a hole in the middle. • A token used in a special establishment like a casino (also called a chip).
I suggest we change the way bitcoins amounts are displayed to reflect a 1:10 split, stating with the official client, to show BTCs as multiple of 10x to be incremented at every block reward halves.
This would be a major change requiring a lots of work from the whole dev community but I think of it as an inevitable change that would have immense benefits to long term adoption of Bitcoin. If this is not to be generally accepted for 2012-2013 halve, it may be hard to explain why is hasn't always been the case. The only alternative I can think of is a 1:100 split every two 4 years cycles.
Thanks for taking the perspective of a non-computer literate person when evaluating this proposal.

... Well, maybe you didn't realize that you aren't required to keep ALL your Bitcoins on ONE wallet? You can have a myriad of security measures for as many wallets as you desire. No one in their right mind would make an offline fragmented wallet for 1 Bitcoin. One of the more amazing features of Bitcoin is, once you have created the deep savings wallet, you can safely SEND as many coins as you wish from anywhere in the world. What is the deep in "deep saving wallet" ? Do you mean "safely SEND as many coins as you wish" to it ? The opposite is not true.

... The software part I agree can make it "virtually" impossible to steal, but there always is a physical and mental part that is near impossible to secure without high costs and high inconveniences. ...
Perhaps you could elaborate on the "physical and mental part" and explain what they have to do with Bitcoin and not any other asset. You understand having a paper wallet in a vault is not convenient for spending it ? You understand this vault has a cost right ? You understand someone know how to open than vault right ? (without force) You may be unaware of it, but there are ways and drugs that will make you do anything even against your will. Who said anything about a paper wallet? Who said anything about a vault? And your examples go far beyond "hacking". You can have convenience or you can have security. With clients like Armory you can even have both. For the price of a cheap laptop and a few thumb drives you can have security that is practically impossible to break. When individually inaccessible pieces of your wallet are spread around in different physical locations, it's going to be pretty hard to "hack". If you fear drugs or torture, and would prefer death over having your Bitcoins stolen, give pieces of your wallet to random family members and tell them to keep secure regardless of any kidnapping ransoms. I stand by my statement, "I feel it's far easier and far cheaper to secure Bitcoins than any other asset I can think of." I can split the wallet to make it worthless without obtaining each piece. With physical assets, even if they are stored in a vault, once that is breached, you've lost your asset. I think I've already agreed on the secure part of software (armory), but software run on hardware and are used by brains.Anyway how convenient is it to have to remember where and recover all the piece of paper wallet are stored before spending it. That make me think, do we want people to sit on their paper wallet forever or actually use Ƀ for commerce ?
