1302  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / What's wrong with PPCoin's difficulty algorithm? on: February 02, 2013, 11:29:04 PM
I decided to make a quick graph of what would happen if Bitcoin used PPCoin's difficulty adjustment. The results are kind of strange, as you can see in the graph below.

The results are on a semi-log plot, with the Y axis being difficulty and the X axis being blocks. As you can see, when Bitcoin has a difficulty of 10^6 (one million) PPCoin has a difficulty of 10^10 (10 billion).

I think that's a little high. Do you think Bitcoin would be successful if it had a mining difficulty of 10 billion right now? Is this how SunnyKing will achieve his goals of a coin that nobody wants to mine?
1303  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Avalon ASIC] Batch #2 pre-Sale Thread on: February 02, 2013, 04:19:33 AM

And, because the design is modular, the modules can be replaced with more energy efficient 65nm process chips in the future.

It's not the chips which are pulling the extra power according to ngzhang's post.

I suppose it is the case fans and the TP-link router.

Avalon the 400w drag act.

Good luck overcoming the (well deserved) vanity of a successful engineer... my simulations were perfect, I tell you.
1304  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: February 02, 2013, 04:02:25 AM
If BFL isn't going to provide a mining controller, then most users will end up using a real computer, not a "Raspberry Pi." You should be more realistic.

Perhaps you should read the BFL forums more.  A lot of them are planning on using a Raspberry Pi - and why not, they only cost USD 25-35.

These toy devices are a PITA in my experience. I wish them good luck if they do not have experience with these products. Hopefully they are easier to use than a Beagleboard or similar.
1305  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: February 02, 2013, 03:54:35 AM
Did I tell you to shut up?

BFL can plug into a OpenWRT device LIKE one in AVALON. Even an Android phone would work.

Your question is does Raspberry Pi gonna have enough bandwidth as a host? Fck yes, it also shows you know crap about this.

Avalon engineered the OpenWRT solution to work effectively.

I don't know what they had to do to make that happen, but I know that you can get away with using a low computer power single purpose device if well engineered to the application.

Everyone in this thread seems to be suggesting the end consumer should slap some 5W toy device called a "Raspberry Pi" into their BFL miner. My experience tells me this is not a real solution.

What operating system and mining software should they install on it? What optimizations should they perform on the OS build to ensure the bitcoin miner is not interrupted by other processes?

If BFL isn't going to provide a mining controller, then most users will end up using a real computer, not a "Raspberry Pi." You should be more realistic.

1306  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: February 02, 2013, 03:45:08 AM
Will a "Raspberry Pi" (whatever that is) going to have the bandwidth to handle difficulty 1 mining from a 60GH/s device. I doubt it. So the power consuption for a "Raspberry Pi" is pretty irrelevant as well.

Idiot, do you know the spec of the host board of Avalon?

You should shut up now, you might learn a thing or two....

What's the point of talking about something that doesn't come with the device?

I know BFL has a thing with physically attaching unrelated consumer hardware to its mining equipment, but design does not transfer by Osmosis. If I glue an IPad to my Bitcoin miner it doesn't mean my Bitcoin miner becomes a well designed and intuitive device.

I'd like to point out that the power usage for this unit is economically irrelevant, and not really necessary for discussion.

The statistic that matters most is time -- Avalon released first, so they win. That's really all there is to it.
1309  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: February 02, 2013, 03:32:24 AM
Chip's power consumption is <6.6W/Ghs

ATX power loses(82%), DC/DC power loses(87%), Fan(5~20w), etc…

So…

Yes, but those losses and loads were part of your power budget for 400 watts, correct? Don't be like Josh-- you were expecting less than 6.6 W/GH/s. Simulating the power performance of a chip like this is a lot more difficult problem than calculating how many watts you will need for the fans. Its completely understandable the simulations were slightly off, but still on the same order.
1310  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Avalon ASIC] Batch #2 pre-Sale Thread on: February 02, 2013, 03:28:34 AM
Yifu, you really need to address the power consumption issue before Batch 2 pre-orders start.  When you said there was a "surprise" onboard, this is not what people were expecting and the fact that you didn't even inform people about it is a blow to your credibility -  I'm a bit taken aback given how honest you guys have generally been.

Its faster than they initially announced, they probably increased the clock frequency, but the power consumption is higher than simulated. Its really not that big of a surprise. Its not really a factor in the operation. The largest factor in Bitcoin mining is the breakeven point, when the money laid out matches the return of the miner. Most of this is the cost of the equipment and variable costs like electricity are very tiny with a device this fast.

And, because the design is modular, the modules can be replaced with more energy efficient 65nm process chips in the future.
1311  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [PPC] PPCoin Released! - First Long-Term Energy-Efficient Crypto-Currency on: January 29, 2013, 05:42:53 AM
Here's a question for you, how is PPCoin going to remove the centralized checkpoint sharing when difficulty target is based on the immediately preceding block? What happens to a coin that does this and has a reorg? I guess that means Freicoin can't use your difficulty adjustment algorithm. This is the reason for the 8 block delay for the filter output.

I don't know why you think deriving difficulty from preceding block(s) would cause any problem with reorganization, are you suggesting that bitcoin's block 2016*n would also have problems with reorganization? Difficulty is checked when connecting block, and it doesn't matter if you derive it from last two blocks or from last 2016 blocks.

As for Jorgeminator's difficulty chart I can't vouch for it's accuracy 100% but indeed there were several major peaks over 200ghs, because I basically check coinotron and bitparking pools pretty much every day.

Bitcoin's readjustment gets a rate using two times and uses that to adjust the difficulty within the limiter. The chain with the highest difficulty is the one selected by the reorganization. Every single block in your chain depends upon the last blocks difficulty. We can't use it because we don't have central check pointing to say which blockchain is the true one. It adjusts too often to lead to a stable network without central checkpointing.

Jorgeminator made a hash rate comparison between freicoin, terracoin and ppcoin, which I believe is reasonably accurate:
Here you go  Wink

He did this with the numbers ABE gives out, which only works for coins that use the Bitcoin difficulty adjustment. Do you think your coins hashrate was bouncing up and down like that?
1314  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL, Box of fans and Avalon trolling: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 29, 2013, 03:54:37 AM
Sorry mem, among your other mental illnesses is your ability to gauge size.  The minirig SC, which is 1.5 TH is the same size as the Avalon unit, which is 66 GH.  Actually, I think the minirig might even be smaller than the Avalon unit.  Now THAT's funny.

BFL minirig SC (1.50 TeraCFM) That is a lot of fans to fit into such a small volume. I'm not sure you have the chops.  Grin
1315  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Crazy_rabbit says TRC will succeed where LTC failed on: January 27, 2013, 06:33:52 PM
I don't get it. Is crazy_rabbit the guy that made TRC or what?

I don't really know anything about TRC other than it is the same as Bitcoin.

you're losing less.

just a highlight

I think this is appropriate. The demurrage is less when there is less mining activity. I have always wanted a currency which increases in value when economic activity is slow and decreases in value when economic activity is overheated. Hopefully it creates a self-regulating system to manage booms and busts.
1318  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: FreiCoin (FRC) discussion (was FreiCoin (FRC) for TRC, PPC, LTC or BTC) on: January 25, 2013, 01:06:29 PM
I am in the middle of a complete rework of my personal network (Including the mining rigs). I will turn my miners (about 3.5 G/Hs) to the Freicoin network as soon as everything is done.

That would be great. We only saw 7 blocks solved in the last 24 hours. At this rate it is going to take 64 days till the difficulty adjusts. Then I guess we can expect a rush again.

Well the good thing for people that hold Freicoin is this effectively greatly reduces the time value of demurrage. In a way it makes Freicoin worth more because you're losing less.
1319  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 25, 2013, 05:56:13 AM
They MUST NOT respond to the requests for source from those who get those devices with DIFFERENT (edited with code removed) source code to what they used.

hmmmm, so where can I download a full distribution of Bitcoin's debug/build/configuration/gitian/test scripts? BlueMatt's github?

I don't ask to antagonize the bitcoin developers, but to point out the wrongness of the argument that Avalon can't delete their debug/support code.

Deliberately breaking open source software by not providing all the necessary tools is a time honored tradition, especially with the professional implementation consultants who often work their way up to positions of authority in open source software projects. For an easily accessible example of this see the history of OpenERP&GnuHealth which is a good example of "open" software in action.

Ok re installed everything cleaned up old data seems its now connecting but still losing active connections. 1 min it had 8 then 3 then none and does not connect up.

Anyone got a full list of ports this uses to forward in router ?

I have 8332 and 8639 forwarded is their any others it uses or just them ?

Dont forward the RPC port (8332)

There is no need for people on the outside to connect to the remote RPC port.

Have you been able to get solo-mining work yet? If your mining software shows any hashes at all it is working.
