1181  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [STORIES] How did you find Bitcoin? on: April 08, 2014, 06:15:20 AM
I first saw bitcoin in 2010 on 4chan I quickly dismissed.

Then I saw this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwNfBgwbqng and I start playing with it. (This is when I respected Admir and Gavin)

How they have changed...

He can't be this dumb? The trust system is broken but this will do nothing to the profiles, since all those people leaving trust are not in the default or anyone's trust since most are new accounts. So basically just a lot of red which most people don't even read if they don't have a reason too.

1185  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Overstock.com TV commercial advertises bitcoin! on: April 07, 2014, 05:52:43 PM
This has been published like 10000x but it is so small doesn't make a different no one is paying that much attention to it.

I don't think that it is in any way insignificant. Bitcoin has received a lot of negative publicity due to Gox. We should thank Overstock for giving us good PR, during these testing times.

It is, it doesn't promote bitcoin at all, maybe 0.01% will even google bitcoin but if you think that is driving people to bitcoin I have a bridge to sell you.

Overstock does nothing for us but gives us a bit of validation. Which is something we still need from a lot of other sources. When I am on this forum I forget the amount of work we still need to do to get acceptance. I was on a bootstrap startup forum the other day, they pretty much laughed me off the forum because I talked about bitcoins. This proves we need a lot more work on validation and getting it from higher sources, overstock is a very tiny source.

well lets see here, 150,000,000/0.01%= 15,000

I doubt 150 million have seen the ad. I would say about 100 people or less have taken to googling what bitcoins are from that ad.

Not yet, and you're one good psychic, your job must be to analyze commercial ads for a living to know how many people google things they see on TV.

No it an estimation TV is a dying medium, people 50+ don't really use google and people 30 and below don't watch much tv. So people 30-40 and are the target demo, and even then if you have to hope they have a phone or tablet to google it right their otherwise they will not even remember it.

... you must be joking.. right?
Considering the average time spent watching tv every day is 5 hours.. And the fact that this commercial will be ran more than once. Your math is wrong.

Here is some maths for you.

Specifically, says Nielsen, here’s the average weekly usage for ascending age groups:

2-11: 24 hours, 16 minutes.

12-17: 20 hours, 41 minutes.

18-24: 22 hours, 27 minutes.

25-34: 27 hours, 36 minutes.

35-49: 33 hours, 40 minutes.

50-64: 43 hours, 56 minutes.

65-plus: 50 hours, 34 minutes.

Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/average-american-watches-5-hours-tv-day-article-1.1711954#ixzz2yDvtV3gd

And the Nielsen is inaccurate due to the fact that they use "statistical sampling". This is shown to skew real data by large margins.

Could the Bitcoin Foundation (or anyone with a good reputation) start a donation to create a short tv ad? Would this be beneficial or are we still too early in the experiment?

If I knew how I would and throw in some.

1190  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoinwallet.com Announce on: April 07, 2014, 05:40:14 AM
@gweedo Thanks for taking the time to check out the site.  The issue of trust is a challenge obviously.  We feel like we've gone beyond the current state of bitcoin custodian sites from a transparency standpoint but you can never remove enough needed trust from the system.  Our proof of solvency, which is available for each logged in account by clicking the green leaf icon, is open source as published by olalonde on github.

Publishing the source code for our entire site isn't out of the question, but we want to get through our initial bursts of traffic and make the necessary adjustments as efficiently as we can.  The interest and demand for the site has far exceeded our expectations.  Just two unexpected articles on domain name industry sites produced a response that was encouraging and surprising.  Our real press coverage doesn't start until Tuesday/Wednesday.

Don't confuse transparency with a trustless service. You are very transparent, giving us your history and your real name, there is no issue there. Transparency is great for a web 2.0 startups, but this is bitcoin, and transparency means nothing. We have anonymous people running companies that are multi-million startups. The issue is when a person using your service is locked into your service. If you used multi-sig, I would never have to worry that one day you would run off with my funds, that you are holding. I can be 100% sure that no matter what day, time, if your service is up or down, I have completely 100% control over the funds. This can easily be implemented on your site and just take a day of testing. This would eliminate your hot wallet system and even if you were hacked no one would be able to steal anything.

Also you should have done more research and made this an exchange not just some id to address type. With this multi-sig, you would be the first mover in this area, forcing companies like bit-pay and coinbase to take notice and hopefully implement it.
1191  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Is Moolah.io a ponzi-scheme? on: April 07, 2014, 04:38:02 AM
It is so easy to build a trustless wallet now of days, it is sad that people have to trust anyone with coins that they just want them to hold.
1192  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoinwallet.com Announce on: April 07, 2014, 02:33:06 AM
You should have used multi-sig for the wallets but I guess not so I can't recommend this to anyone. I still don't get why someone paid $250K and made this with bitcoinwallet.com such a good domain yet a horrible service.

Edit: you made a graph that shows your solvency? How do we trust the code? I know you are an internet entrepreneur, but bitcoin is a different beast, send me your skype I gladly sit down with you and tell you how to make this a trustless service. It may cost you some bitcoins due to my time is not cheap.
1193  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looking for more data sources on: April 07, 2014, 01:40:44 AM
1) What info is secured from bitcoins and bitcoin trades? (Things like, how many transactions there were on a given day, the number o active wallets, amount of bitcoin transationed, the continent in which these transactions were made...)

You probably want to look at days destroyed it is a way of calculating a good estimated volume of bitcoins a day in transactions. You really can't get a good number on how many wallets but if I had guess I would say about 5 million people use bitcoin today.
1194  Economy / Digital goods / Re: Selling Bitcoin.ceo on: April 06, 2014, 09:15:48 PM
$100 for the domain, on the condition that namecheap allows transfer of that domain (I don't know if they support .ceo). I will also pick and pay any escrow fees.

Ask to pay in bitcoins you get a date, you help a charity and you spread bitcoins!

P.S. Don't tell me to do this as I have the money, yet I have a beautiful gf... she wouldn't like me going on dates.
1196  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Open Bitcoin Store: Free bitcoin online stores on: April 06, 2014, 05:13:16 PM
Is this project still live?  Discussion seems to have ended abruptly both here and at reddit, and I can't get any of the links to load.

Really sounds like a wonderful idea.

I am going to guess not since Andreas is now Chief Security Officer at blockchain.info.
1197  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Question to bitcoin startups? on: April 06, 2014, 03:19:13 AM
What is a good accounting software preferable for the web and free?

My excel spreadsheet isn't working that great now that money is coming in and going out all day long. Probably due to transaction malleability (this was a joke). But no I need it to do both bitcoins how much I spend and income also I need that same data in USD.

Wish their was a stronger speaker that could have handled this. Also I would rather someone not associated with a company or the foundation. Sad this was a huge thing and kinda a let down. Just my opinion.
1199  Economy / Services / [LF] Logo Designer on: April 05, 2014, 08:22:30 PM
I want a logo for a new startup. I willing pay about $50 in bitcoins or another option would be a lifetime credit on the site as the designer with a link to any *site of yours/way of contacting you.

People that choose the second option will be also screen ahead of anyone who wants the 1st option.

PM me with the option you choose in the subject and some of your work.

*It has to be your site, can't be just a random internet site.

Why does the name of this service remind me of a proposal Mike Hearn floated last year in the Bitcoin Foundation forums?

No it was worst it was a proposal by mt gox to make their address special to miners. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Green_address
