1101  Other / MultiBit / Re: MultiBit on: July 16, 2012, 04:27:11 PM
In short:

- wallet file on truecrypt drive
- dismount truecrypt drive
- multibit = b0rked

I think that is to be expected... didn't TC warn you about open files?
1102  Economy / Gambling / Re: SatoshiDICE.com - The World's Most Popular Bitcoin Game on: July 16, 2012, 02:06:10 PM
OK The matter of the 17btc has been resolved with one simple chat on IRC with Magicaltux, I must say he really is very efficient and easy to deal with, I only wish there were like 100 of him dealing with customer support requests.

So my high reccomendations go out to MTGOX for dealing with the matter.

He said the problem was that support can only see and manage the deposit address associated with GOX accounts not the other receiving address and thats why they could not help.

Yup... that is what I thought:
Probably a tier 1 support tech that doesn't have the tools to see it, but still.

I am glad they handled it so well for you.  Web 2.0 baby!  If that was VISA then your money would have never been returned and you just would have written it off because that would have been less frustrating than dealing with their support.

+1 for GOX on this one I have to say.  (Also not too bad to almost double your money huh;)
1103  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: New RetroShare Bitcoin Forum on: July 16, 2012, 01:55:46 PM
Since posting my block I've switched ISPs.  I no longer have a public IP address.  I share my IP address with a bunch of other customers of my ISP, so I guess you'll never see me online.
They do NATing on your WAN side? That sucks!

If it is important to you I would recommend AirVPN, they take BTC and seem rock solid and they do port forwarding!
1104  Economy / Gambling / Re: SatoshiDICE.com - The World's Most Popular Bitcoin Game on: July 16, 2012, 01:54:41 PM
So seriously if MtGox don't return the 17 BTC, they should get a scammer tag like Bulanula has coz they've done the same thing as him - accepted coins by accident but not returned them.
Oh the laughter....
Mt.Gox.. Return that 17btc...
It would be worth the PR cost to return them..... as dooglus pointed out they did indeed get them back.

Probably a tier 1 support tech that doesn't have the tools to see it, but still.
1105  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dear Bitcoinica Hacker on: July 16, 2012, 01:46:31 PM
Yes, after the linode hack, they were completely stupid to leave any significant amount funds in there. 0 sympathy.
So are people fools for continuing to use Mt. Gox after they were hacked? Or do we decide who is a fool retroactively?

Directly after the hack? Absolutely. They'd still be fools to leave any significant sum in there (signifigant meaning you can't afford to lose it) or any amount for a long period of time. Mtgox has at least gone a year without a catastrophe on this level and I'd say the same there. Bitconica on the surface was drastically more sketchy and appealed to greedy fools but yeah, don't leave shit you can't afford to lose in other peoples' hands, be that mtgox or anyone else. What's so difficult about that?
So you keep all of your cash under your pillow then?  What about when you go out to eat?  Are you a greedy fool if someone breaks into your house because you didn't take it with you, but it would have been 'oh poor shock' if you got mugged while going to lunch?
1106  Economy / Services / Re: [ANNOUNCE] TORwallet - anonymous mixing wallet service on: July 16, 2012, 01:40:16 PM
The way in which the operator of TORwallet has partially compromised his identity confirms for me this entire approach is wrong; it's a mistake to trust a third party to protect your anonymity.  Even when the owners of a mixing service have the best intentions they can make mistakes and if they can be located they can be threatened.

I don't know enough about cryptography to say how (or if) it can be accomplished but mixing coins needs to be done in a way in such a way that it's not necessary to trust the mixing service.

If your security/anonymity needs are that high, Bitcoin may not be the right thing for you. You always leave a trail while aquiring bitcoin. Your IP will always be there at some point (if you don't trust TOR). The closest thing would be mining over TOR or something like this.
In short, Bitcoin is well known to be pseudonymous, so you might instead use a centrally managed system (only one instance to trust) or better yet, some offline commodity (where you trust your partner). No free lunch once you become paranoid enough ;-)

I still say TORWallet comes close to the most trustworthy tumbler, in terms of anonymity (not in terms of "noone runs away with your coins" necessarily though). Which doesnt say you shouldn't cascade several services and tumblers.

Ente

This is not always true... there are ways to take precautions if one so desires.  There is a reason BTC is used on the black market.
1107  Economy / Collectibles / Re: How would you like to design a bitcoin banknote? on: July 16, 2012, 01:36:01 PM

I understand the reason for the curve... however I think it distracts from the bill and makes it look un-tidy.
1108  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] NASTY - Free Electricity, GPUMAX.com, Free ASIC Upgrade! on: July 16, 2012, 03:58:00 AM
In an effort to get dividends for this operation rolling as soon as possible, I have come to an agreement to purchase 1 BFL Single from forum user kibblesnbits.  This single should be shipped out tomorrow and dividends will begin being paid shortly after receipt of the device.

Is there an escrow being used?

Due to my reputation, kibblesnbits has agreed to send the Single to be tested and confirmed as working normally prior to receiving payment.
Even better
1109  Economy / Collectibles / Re: How would you like to design a bitcoin banknote? on: July 16, 2012, 03:38:38 AM
I vote for pirateat40 for the portrait
1110  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Personal contribution of 5,000 BTC to affected Bitcoinica customers on: July 16, 2012, 12:15:32 AM
I will also refund back the bitcoins that I have received when I get my 100% refund from bitcoinica.
So..... Never?
1111  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: [BitcoinMax.com] Paying 6.9% per week... Small accounts welcome. on: July 16, 2012, 12:13:44 AM
+1 Had an account for a couple weeks now.  Great service.  Reliable and clean website... which Google apparently thinks is in Malay... Hopefully this'll be good for a couple laughs.

Use normal browser then. Google Chrome is idiot-resistant.
Chrome rocks!
1112  Economy / Collectibles / Re: How would you like to design a bitcoin banknote? on: July 16, 2012, 12:11:12 AM
but I do feel we could go for a little bit more depth and really revel in the mathematical roots of Bitcoin Smiley.
Just add to the requirements that in addition to decimal the numbers should be printed in tonal. Then Luke-Jr will do all your work for free and will contribute to the bounty.
I need the story that goes with this.
1113  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should a bitcoinica clone be put online ? on: July 15, 2012, 12:41:24 PM
You are one of a handful of people I would trust with non-trivial amounts of Bitcoin.  Cannot quite remALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD
FTFY
^^^^ This.

Second:  why not explore a GLBSE company?  Allow people to buy in plus that way there is an easy way to motion and what not. We would need to agree here how many shares you would get for the work you have already done and the hosting and whatnot.  I am also a rails guy, but not sure what time I would be able to commit to yet.

What about the algorithm being public? Would this affect profitability?
1114  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info - Bitcoin Block explorer & Currency Statistics on: July 15, 2012, 12:29:31 PM
do you charge 1.5% on anonymous receive addresses as well?

Yes, I should clarify that.

Bonus currently active. However the increase of the output depth has made it much pickier about what addresses qualify, it is likely that if you send through any funds that have already passed through the mixer in 48 hours they will not qualify (a ~0.0002 BTC miners fee will be charged).

 well, shit.
tried it out for fun with 700 btc
down 10.5btc now.
any chance to be refunded since the fee wasn't advertised?

Why would you use such a large amount?!?
1115  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Shedding a little light on: July 15, 2012, 04:08:31 AM
You’re not suggesting that someone in the Bitcoin community could be doing something inappropriate are you? That can’t be right because this place isn’t controlled and regulated by those nasty governments. It’s controlled by the good people of the earth. LOL
Money's most powerful ability is to allow bad people to continue doing bad things at the expense of those who do not have it.
1116  Economy / Collectibles / Re: How would you like to design a bitcoin banknote? on: July 15, 2012, 04:07:42 AM
Would be awesome! Maybe something to give a new born and then allow them to watch the amount of BTC and the value of the BTC grow in value over time. And then on their 18th birthday they are presented with either the private key or the pass phrase to unlock the encrypted private key that is on the same certificate. Hell if they can crack it and withdraw early I think they are entitled to early withdraw Smiley

What a great idea for my son!
1117  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Personal contribution of 5,000 BTC to affected Bitcoinica customers on: July 15, 2012, 04:07:00 AM
I gave you fair warning Zhou Tong, I am going to enjoy very much what will happen to you very soon. You can officially consider me as your
enemy and I will make sure justice is served. I would hire personal security if I was you.

Maria. <3

Why threaten or blame ZT?  He is the only one who has not acted like a d-bag in this whole debacle.

It's Maria.  She likes people to believe that she's rich as fuck and powerful (she once claimed that she helped Satoshi launch Bitcoin).  She's perfectly happy to "help" her people in Venezuela by gouging them on the price of pre-paid cards, though.  She knows she can't intimidate the other Bitcoinica players and thinks that she can bullshit and intimidate Zhou due to his youth.

Well then won't she have all those pre-mined blocks?  Grin
1118  Economy / Collectibles / Re: How would you like to design a bitcoin banknote? on: July 15, 2012, 02:26:08 AM
ok then. maybe I am not looking for a Bearer Bond. More like a SECURE bond?

That is the great thing about these... we are not locked into any one persons interpretation of what they should be.

Maybe you want an letter sized bond to frame or show off or whatever that has the public key, but a credit-card sized serial-numbered matched private key store.... all do-able!

I had thought a similar thing.  Only I was thinking more along the lines of letter sized bonds but with the 'cool Hollywood look' for cold storage or private transfer of significant funds (personal gifts, etc)

Yes, you mean like this?  I could put this in my safe with important documents, and people would realize it has value.

[img:https://dl.dropbox.com/u/52611567/btc-bond.png[/img]

WOW. That's just... sexy! Wink

Damn sexy! But the private key is still in plain site so if the vault or what ever got broken into got stolen and someone DID know what bitcoin was, they would be able to redeam it right away.

Isn't that the point of a bearer bond? The bearer has the monies?

However it does pose an interesting delemia: if you are showing some with a careful picture they could empty the value.
