862  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Desktop - Bitcoin client for the common users (friendly and instant) on: August 15, 2012, 03:26:58 PM
I am loving Electrum....  just need some free time to finish setting my server then there will be another Electrum server available too.
863  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info wallet on iOS - install it now! on: August 15, 2012, 03:22:43 PM
hmmm, unable to download... Might be because i have the app from Cydia too, lol.
Interesting idea... I ran into the same issue.  I removed the Cydia package and then the iOS version installed without a hitch.

(Are you annoyed enough to donate so that it will happen faster?  Wink )
Honestly i hadn't even noticed this.
865  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: [BitcoinMax.com] Paying 6.9% per week... Small accounts welcome. on: August 15, 2012, 02:48:27 PM
In any case, since Bitcoinmax is the largest PPT by far, it should ask a better treatment from Pirate IMHO.
4.9% a week is still insanely great.  I think we should be happy and not be sniveling over ~5% a week.
866  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: [BitcoinMax.com] Paying 6.9% per week... Small accounts welcome. on: August 15, 2012, 12:33:58 PM
While I agree that 7% wasn't sustainable, giving his larger passthru's the option of more interest for only withdrawing once a week would give him stability, and let people keep their higher return.  It looks like his problem was stability, if bitcoinmax can offer that, why not keep it at the current rate?  Deposits at bitcoinmax would skyrocket.

Not nessecariy... I prefer the ability to get at my coins.  Iwoulld almost certainly withdraw if that change were made.
867  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Putting your money where Pirate's mouth is. on: August 15, 2012, 12:31:47 PM
Somehow I wonder if this is what pirate does for entertainment.  Funer than craps.  Get an argument ready then gamble on what the outcome would be.
868  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info wallet on iOS - install it now! on: August 15, 2012, 12:29:03 PM
A wallet on blockchain.info is inherently insecure. You should never have anything in it you would not be willing to lose.
Putting the app on top of that adds a few potential security threats sure, but it is already an assumed distrustful environment.

Leave the real wealth in the real wallet, put a few coins in this when going out, beer fund Smiley

I thought that too!

Since the code is open, people can modify, compile and publish as an app. Or simply wait for the compiled version from Qkos Services Ltd and change it (Man-in-the-Middle).

Anyway to be sure?
That attack won't work with the app store, the signatures would fail.

As far as downloading a malicious version the same advice goes for any other bitcoin software, just make you you download it from a trusted source.  You could easily download a recompiled version of the mainline bitcoin client that was modified.  Just be vigilant.

870  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: [BitcoinMax.com] Paying 6.9% per week... Small accounts welcome. on: August 15, 2012, 12:13:34 PM
Or just be happy with the 5% a WEEK that is on offer.....

7% was never sustainable.... 5% isn't either, so be prepared for lower rates in the future
Just thought this deserved more attention.  Even pirate himself said that his business wouldn't work forever.... Be happy with what you have.
871  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Has Pirate lost his bet now? on: August 15, 2012, 12:07:07 PM
Does anyone want to make a statement? Van, nano, pirate? Smiley

It is almost like it was planned:

  • Don’t concede the wager and chance the outcome of Aug 14th.

Ah! There it is. I knew that was a plea to let him out of the bet before he lost it.

That doesn't make any sense though, at that time pirate had the opportunity to announce the changes. Why wait?

Plus, that doesn't mean all the passtrough will get lower rate Smiley
yes, most likely the pass throughs will indeed be affected.

The highest trust account listed (25k+) is listed @ 5%
875  Economy / Securities / Re: Imsaguy's PPT @ 7% on: August 14, 2012, 08:08:31 PM
Rate adjustment.
Wait, what was it before?
7%... now 5%
876  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: iPhone IOS Bitcoin wallet is here! (From Blockchain.info) on: August 14, 2012, 06:05:50 PM
I installed the app but it appears to be "watch only".  Any ideas on how to add regular functionality?
Jailbreak
877  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: raising awareness by giving away private keys on: August 14, 2012, 06:01:38 PM
I *love* this idea.  Combined with the new bitcoin bills that actually look like money (people would assign value to them just by looking) this is great.

What would be 100% better would be a site like WhatIsBtc.com that you could print on the back of the bill, think of it as an analogy for WheresGeorge.com.  The site would educate from a zero-knowledge to having setup a wallet and imported the bill, then what to do next.
878  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: [BitcoinMax.com] Paying 6.9% per week... Small accounts welcome. on: August 14, 2012, 05:56:41 PM
Those rate changes were posted back in July, originally intended to take effect August 1st.  I see nothing changed other than it got pushed back twice (once from Aug 1 -> 14, now from Aug 14 -> 20).  Back in July paybt.c confirmed that BitcoinMax would remain 6.9% though.  Interested to hear if something has changed behind the scenes though (like pirate no longer offering premium rates to the older & larger passthroughs).

No the rates were just revised lower today.
True story.  25k+ trust account are now @ 5%.

For those of you who do not live on IRC, here is an excerpt from the man himself:
Quote
[11:42:38] <hashking> Why the short notice Pirate
[11:44:47] <@pirateat40> hashking, I tried to hold off thinking the operating wallets would balance out but they haven't fast enough so Im having to hold more reserves which is eating into my profit margin.
[11:46:23] <@pirateat40> Its a stability thing, its getting harder and harder to predict when coins will come in and go out.
[11:46:49] <Chaaaang-Noi> i see
[11:46:51] <@pirateat40> So I'll have times when im holding too many coins in op wallets and move some over and then get a flood of withdraws.
[11:47:12] <Chaaaang-Noi> could you just lock it so we can only take out on mondays or someting?
[11:47:34] <@pirateat40> Yea, but i hate limiting people moving funds.
879  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BTCbuy.info - scam or legit? on: August 14, 2012, 04:17:09 PM
I think it was a legit question...

It isn't that a question was asked, it was the word choice.   Just seeing that title and nothing more, someone might assume there was a service problem where a customer wasn't getting satisfactory service to such an extent that there was the need to question if the service is even legit.  That's a huge difference from a thread with the title "Can anyone share their experience with X?"

I was looking for the same information and didn't find any active posts like the service was very active.

Probably because we see services that interact with the banking system and see so much suck, we just assume that every service must suck.  But services that operate through a website and work as advertised don't require much interaction through the forum.  They do exist.  There even is one site that occasionally posts "out of stock" followed hours later with a "restock completed" type of message simply to bump the thread.  Even with plenty of orders happening daily, there just are no customer complaints so the thread otherwise looks barren.

So, the whole point of my reply was to ask that the title be changed so that wrong words aren't associated with a service that did nothing to deserve such a negative association.  And now since that hasn't been done and there has since been a half dozen replies means the negative exposure has been shown many times more than if I had simply winced, and let it be.  Which is something that I now regret not having done.

I understand your reaction; however I had the exact same thought (possible scam) due to some red flags:
  • I had never heard of it or seen it on the forums before (as opposed to other highly known sites)
  • The posts on the site were not done by a site account but a personal account.  Is this person the owner or just a promoter?
  • There is no one thread for the service, which is pretty common here.  This was the biggest red flag for me
  • The fact that an official representative has not stopped by this thread to clarify is also concerning.

Fact is that scammers love to scam, and with BTC there is no recourse.  When red flag are thrown then it is the smart consumer that does his research.  A simple "No it is not a scam.  I am the owner and we have been operating for XYZ months, ask me any questions." would have worked a ton to clear things up.

Again I think the fact that two 100% unrelated people had the same thought (this might be a scam) is indicative of a need for some action on part of the site owners.  Blame the customer approach generally doesn't go over well.

10 BTC bounty for anyone who can finish the function below (depends on bitcoin-js) and produce a verifyMessage as well.
Can it be in coffee script?  Or is that a deal breaker?
