Last century, when newspapers were broadsheets, the paper was folded horizontally for display. This is not done with modern tabloid papers. The top part of the front page, ie, the section above the fold, was important to attract potential readers. Obviously the headline covered the main story of the day, and was the equivalent of "click bait". I sometimes use the term to describe the initial screen display that surfer sees when he links to a site. Does anyone else use this term, and do you think it is self-explanatory? If it is misleading, what alternative term could I use?
942  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: If only we had a crypto version of Ebay that could save us the hindrance of fee on: September 26, 2020, 01:33:24 PM
I've had a couple of goes at starting auction sites, both online and in real life. The big problem is getting sellers to submit items, as they are not likely to get high prices until you have a lot of potential buyers. I used to put my own items in, and accept that they would not realise top prices, but it involves a lot of work.

My new Rag St site takes a slightly different approach. I want to introduce wholesale sellers to bulk buyers, and to use Bitcoin for international transactions.

temporary shadow banning might be an easy solution.

Well "Very Well Endowed" seems to have killed this thread. Smiley

I don;t know why people stay and continue to post if they think the forum is so bad. If a forum starts to have no value for me, then I just move on.  Bitcoin Talk seems to be changing, but it still has some great members contributing, and I am pleased to have access to their knowledge and opinions. The world of crypto is changing and expanding quite rapidly at the moment. If you aren't taking advantage of it, then you are missing out on a life changing opportunity. Discussion in this forum will help all of us establish ourselves in the new world that is emerging.

Jolly good show - keep up the quality posting. Smiley
946  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Can I charge a solar panel under cafe lighting? on: September 26, 2020, 07:30:46 AM
I've had a bit of time to experiment, and this is what I have found, and I might even read the manual a bit later to see what I have got wrong. Smiley

The indicator lights don't vary in intensity with the power supply. The problem was simply the contrast in bright sunlight ( yes, I am in England ). It fooled me a bit, as it only has one indicator status when charging. That is two lights on, and three cycling. When it is charged, all the lights are steady. This contrast the PNY bank that I am replacing, that uses the lights to indicate the state of charge. To check the current state of charge, you need to disconnect it, and tap the multi-function button, and that will tell you which of the 20% charge bands still need to be charged.

None of this helps with using cafe lighting to charge the bank though, and I'll need to do some further research to determine if this is possible. I've installed Tiny Web Gallery on Rag St, and I'll take some pictures a bit later to clarify the charging options. I've got another couple of small solar panels, and I will see if any of those will generate a charge. Of course another alternative is to use a cafe that has power sockets available for customers.

I'm intelligent enough to realise that making a full quote immmediately after a post .would make me look stupid
I'm also intelligent enough to put you on ignore

I get so tired of all the crap about people only being here for the signature earnings. For me the social interaction, educational discussions and threads, and the possibility of making business contacts are more important. I'm a domainer, so I use my signature sometimes to help with some project of mine - hence the stuff about Rag St. It would be a loss to me if I could use my signature space for various things as the mood takes me, I don't care if some helpful member uses his sig to earn a bit as a result of making helpful posts, but I do find it annoying when somebody with a minimal command of English makes meaningless posts, in an attempt to gain rank. They then whinge about everybody having the right to ponce off the forum to earn a few pence.

Maybe signatures should be banned for all those below full member level. Smiley

Well it looks as if the answer in "no" for this charger. I collected the battery bank a short while ago, and I plugged it into the can charger, and that works well. When I arrived back at Asda, the sun was quite bright, so I tried it in the car park. I thought it was broken, as I coyldn't see the charging LEDs. On closer inspection, I noticed that they were blue under a smoked cover, and there wasn't much contrast in the sunlight. I'm quite pleased with it so far, as it does more than my bead bank. It does have a wireless charger, but I don't have anything to use that.

One thing that I didn't like was a prize card in the box. It was a scratch card, and I could claim a prize if I gave it a 5 star rating on Amazon. The prizes were £10, £15, and £20, and, of course, I won the £20 prize. I claim this via email, but there is no code relating to the card or the prize. I guess everybody wins the £20 prize. This explains why it has so many 5 star ratings. Based on my initial impressions, I would probably have given it 5 stars anyway, but I will claim the prize.

Congrats and i gave you 10 merits, because I always seem to be late to the party.

Maybe you highlight another difference in your post. I don't use discord, but then I was never much good at gaming. I'm much more interested in investment and banking. My belief is that we want more fund managers and bankers here, and not so many gamers ( unless thery are bankers of course ).

I don't see any scam alerts on threads that I open, and I try to avoid the flaming and name calling. Of course there is a lot of old information here. Members who are new to Bitcoin need to read the basics, and that is probably going to be old information. Fortunately we have many knowledgeable members ( the old timers) who are able to update the basic concepts, and to provide help and advice.

In the world of crypto currencies, it seems that anyone who joined more than a month ago is an old timer. The first cryptographs are claimed to be the Egyptian hieroglyphs from 4,000 years ago, but I don'r really think of them as cryptographs. Possibly the origins of cryptography lie in the cyphering machines of the 1930s. Gaining a good basic understanding of the emerging world will give you a massive advantage, and Bitcoin Talk can help you to gain this understanding.

Wild salmon is healthier and tastier than farmed salmon. There is a good reason for this - it is because the wild salmon has to fight against the current. This makes it stronger, and ensures the survival of the fittest. The problem that Bitcoin Talk may have is an unwillingness of many members to fight against the current to get to the spawning grounds. The solution is for some of us to rebuild the spawning grounds, and thus attract and encourage the virile crypto enthusiasts.

Not all westerners are lard arses. Tge vaccinations and pharmaceuticals taken by parents and given to kids can cause a range of problems. It isn;t just insulin resistance, which I suspect is more related to diet. You see some people with stunted growth, and also many hyperactive bean poles. I agree that "normal" seems to be a declining characteristic though.
954  Other / Off-topic / Re: ADVICE: Build your own PC after the quarantine on: September 25, 2020, 08:16:32 AM
It isn't always true that you save money by building your own. Many retail outlets offer Windows based machines with a load of trial software pre-installed. The retailer gets paid for that, and this extra money can allow him to sell the machine at below the cost of the components. If you reformat the HDD, and install Linux, you can get an efficient machine at a bargain price.
955  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Can I charge a solar panel under cafe lighting? on: September 25, 2020, 08:10:09 AM
I've read up a bit on this, and it seems that the wavelength of the light is important, as well as its intensity. The type of solar panel makes a difference as well. I bought the battery bank for conventional use, but the fact that it has a solar panel is a bonus. Obviously it will be handy if I am using my mobile on the beach, but I have a card reader associated with my internet banking, and that has a small solar panel to provide power. I use that almost exclusive under room lights.

I should get delivery of the new battery bank today, so maybe I'll review it here.

I bought a bluetooth keyboard to use with my phone. It's geat for typing replies, but you still have the problem of the small screen.
957  Other / Serious discussion / Can I charge a solar panel under cafe lighting? on: September 24, 2020, 04:20:47 PM
The back up power bank for my mobile has just packed up, and I have bought a replacement on Amazon. It has 3 ways ro recharge itself. and one is a solar panel. It has just occurred to me that this could work under the light in a cafe. If this is possible, what would be the best lights to recharge it.
958  Other / Meta / Re: Should we post for members or guests? on: September 24, 2020, 04:01:53 PM
Well here is a surprising development that has come from my posting. It is from the used clothing thread for my Rag St thread. It seems there is a possibility that the site could arrange for hand made clothing made in an under developed country could be exported and sold in a developed country, and payment could be made in Bitcoin. I think that is a great idea, and could help a village economy. I just wonder if I will be able to put a deal like that together, and what problems I will have with customs etc.
959  Economy / Economics / Re: UK’s economy will lose a good amount of money if football clubs shut. on: September 24, 2020, 11:54:53 AM
The whole Covid business is a load of bollocks. Opening the clubs would mean that they have to admit they have been wrong, and they have wasted enormous amounts of our money over this not very dangerous virus. They have to continue promoting this panicdemic to allow them to implement forced vaccinations, and to get rid of smaller businesses.
960  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The second hand clothes market is booming. on: September 24, 2020, 11:45:19 AM
I'm grateful for all of the positive comments about Rag St. It started out as an idea to utilise a domain name to match a few local sellers with potential clothing sources. It looks as if there is a much broader possibility. It is very early days for the forum, and I will have to consider how it can be expanded into a global contact service. Obviously my interest in Bitcoin will be useful, as Bitcoin overcomes the problems associated with payments.

I need to associate an image galley with the SMF software, and unfortunately Coppermine doesn't work with my installed version. Coppermine is the CMS offered in the package library/ I use Piwigo for some other sites, but I don't think that is suitable. I'll have a look through Softaculous and see if there is something in there.

I'll have a word with a few people to see if anyone wants to sell hand made clothing in England. Now may not be a good time, as Covid has shut down a lot of smaller shops, and we are coming to the end of the car boot season.
