702  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Warning]: Impersonation and spoofing of crypto related companies on Twitter on: November 16, 2023, 02:55:29 PM
This clearly shows that the scammers are always one step ahead. They impersonated someone whom everyone in Crypto trusts, so when he says to do something, they do.
Sad for those who lost nearly $50,000. Kudos to the scammer for being so innovative, creating an account with a similar name, and still not being flagged by Zachxbt himself.
The domain sounds original to be very honest like that's what it's meant to do.

The scammer could better use his/her creative skills in something more productive (not only for him I mean, because the loot was large...). I hope that those who were scammed could afford to lose that money. I wonder if the social media platform itself can be made responsible of the loss for not establishing more strict security measures.

Dears, don't hesitate and use the scissors whenever you need it. It is a practice in line with the recommendations of the forum, which makes it much easier for others to follow the conversations that you are holding, and I don't think that anyone will feel offended if you cut the dispensable parts Wink

Fivestar4everMVP, you should take a break from bitcointalk Cheesy

Nah, to be honest I think almost the same way as you do, but in terms of online vs real life (I still have a shred of sanity left, but not much).

Now that you talk about 1xbit/1xbet, taking into account their reputation here, I was surprised to see that they have ads in top crypto services like coinmarketcap or myetherwallet. I still talking about the online version, but regardless their reputation in the forum, it seems that there are still some doubts about their legitimacy or such platforms wouldn't advertise them. Or most probably these platforms are simply sold to the highest bidder.

And now you tell us that in your country they have physical locations too where people can gamble? Shocked Now you have completely surprised me. Who knows, it might be true that they are changing their modus operandi. There's no need to be shady when the legal business is good...

And also I wanted to remind you about your promise to update the original thread and adding my to the hall of Fame of the AOBT .Thanks ones again for accepting my application.

Yes, I didn't forget it Haychy Wink it is just that it will take me some time to search and change all the numbers, and last weekend I spent my little free time with the voting thing. But I'll do it asap.

Btw, I'd like to ask you a favor: when I update it, can you kindly translate and publish the Pidgin version of the OP? That way you have some entertainment until next proposal Cheesy.

I liked this platfrom it's easy to find pages, but OP said it's available in 3 languages but I seen only 2.(english is important btw)

I could not found where is the forum is on the website,
I think all the good and important features are not totally for free it have membership to use all features.
We can just read lots of useful blog posts for free.

About the available languages, I have seen that it is already translated into Spanish, although there are a few sections that are not translated yet.

I applaud OP's initiative and, if he needs help with the Spanish translation (for free), count me in. Addictions ruin lives, not only addicted's life but loved ones' too, so any help like the one provided by the announced website is appreciated.

And we are all a bit lazy from time to time, aren't we?

Definitely we are  Cheesy  I agree with what you said, those topics are very nice, especially for beginners who are looking for demystifying basic things.

That said, AoBTers, you can start thinking in the next translation proposal.

For the next one, I would like to propose a translation of another 1miau topic, which in my opinion is extremely useful: Why people should be using SegWit addresses

Thank you iwantmyhomepaidwithbtc2, segwit is an interesting topic that we haven't translated yet, and the fact that 1miau is the author is always a guarantee. I'm afraid that Buchi-88 will have to wait for a new proposal again, as suppose that it is already translated into German by the OP himself (I'll check it when we make it official).

Let's see if any AoBTer has any objection before adding it to the list, so we can start working on it.

AoBTers, I would like to suggest a new topic to translate: 1miau's Trade vs. HODL - avoid traps.

Hey Porf, please fin here the Romanian translation of this thread: Tranzacționare vs. HODL – evitați capcanele.

Added! thank you Gazeta, with this one it has been translated into 8 languages so far. Two more and we can move it to the other list.

I think that this kind of short and interesting OPs are the kind of translations that can encourage participation in the local boards, if native members engage in a conversation. I don't mean that longer and more technical topics are not valuable (good guides are very helpful not only for members but for visitors too), but shorter texts are faster to translate and easier to read. And we are all a bit lazy from time to time, aren't we?

That said, AoBTers, you can start thinking in the next translation proposal.

BTW, after a recent vote, we will be announcing some news very soon. Stay tuned Wink

We need some advice. Is it allowed according to the forum rules to ask someone else to make a local translation of a thread if a translation already exists? The problem is that the user who translated the thread into Russian did not update the informative links in the Russian-language OP, although our manager reminded him of this. Looking into the future, we would prefer to choose someone who is more outgoing.

713  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Never say your recovery seed or private key out loud! on: November 14, 2023, 06:20:36 AM
I don’t know if someone can be hypnotized to tell you their seed phrase, I believe I’ve read a topic about it on here but I can’t remember right now. I don’t think it’s a good idea to test a person’s loyalty with your seed phrase, even if the wallet is empty or the whole thing was a trick. How would you even know if the person had access to the wallet if he doesn’t move the coins in it? It’s a poor test of judgement, my friend. And adversely your actions may breed contempt in the other party.

Are you serious? To hypnotize or use of spell is the simplest way I think one can tell about their seed phrase and other things in general. With that happening I don't think there's much work to do.
Some people can go to any length to gain the trust of the one person they feel they love or feel they trust, it mustn't be that it must be with the seed phrase, the wallet can be empty too like you said but they'd monitor how thing goes after exposing it.
In some cases to make it more tempting they'd let a little amount to be in the wallet just to carry on with the test.
I too don't fancy such test, but you can't change or tell why some people go to that extent to gain trust by revealing their seed phrase.

I can remember reading here a quite famous case of a person who lost and forgot his seed and, with the help pf hypnosis he was able to remember the words, or at least that's what he was trying. It was long ago that I read it so I can't remember the detail. But, what is sure is that it wasn't "a spell" on a hodler. I'm quite skeptical about the kind of hypnosis Sexylizzy2813 is talking about, and I think that to be really effective, hypnosis must be agreed by the subject. Maybe if you talked about being manipulated in order to tell the seed... one must be really silly to do that, but don't underestimate the human stupidity: social engineering is a thing for one reason.
714  Local / Trading y especulación / Re: [Noviembre 2023|Se Avecina... el 2024: Y? on: November 14, 2023, 05:57:50 AM

715  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Lotteries and possibility vs. probability on: November 13, 2023, 03:24:00 PM

Lets put up Megamillions.

Unfortunately, many lotteries have even worse odds than the scenario just described. For example, the popular Mega Millions multi-state lottery has odds of approximately 1 in 175,711,536. That's right — 1 in almost 176 million!
https://wonderopolis.org/wonder/what-are-your-odds-of-winning-the-lottery

Imagine on how you much you would really be needing on hitting up those chances. Grin
-snip-

I think that it is interesting to remember, if you didn't read it, what was discussed before in this same thread, not about Megamillions in particular but about Euromillions, which is also a multi-state lottery. The probability to win that lottery is in the OP so it is unnecessary to repeat it, but it is not very different from the one you mention.

Well, in fact it would be one in a hundred thousands lifetimes playing hundreds of times each life.

I liked Coin_trader's example about being hit twice by a lightning. In fact, the probability of being struck by a lightning seems to be something between 0.0001%-0.0002%, so it is 143-286 times easier to be hit than winning euromillions, if my calculus is correct Cheesy

-snip-

And, BTW, even not impossible, what gives me peace of mind is to think that it is still much more probable to win the lottery than to suffer an address collision in Bitcoin's blockchain.
716  Economy / Economics / Re: Are You Sticking to Your Plan or Has Life Made You Pause or Modify It? on: November 13, 2023, 03:06:56 PM
In my case, I have a flexible plan, so I'm not sure what to answer, to be honest. On one hand, by improvising a little bit I'm modifying my long term plan but, on the other, I'm still sticking to it because I foresaw little deviations since the beginning.

I think that it is possible to have your cake and eat it too, so leaving aside the black or white formulation of the question made by the OP, I think that I'm sticking to my general plan, while pausing from time to time and making little modifications Tongue

717  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin, when to buy on: November 13, 2023, 02:56:17 PM
-snip-

In buying and investing in Bitcoin  you buy at anytime that is comfortable tomemwhen you have money, which some people will not want they keep waiting for the price to be very low up to the bottom line which at times does not come easily and it keeps on increasing which will now make you to be lossing as you wait instead of DCA at the initial

DCA seems to be the preferred method here in the forum, as I always read the advice to use it instead of buying in bulk. I can understand the reasons why they (and you) prefer it, but for some people it is better simply to buy at whatever price and hodl. Imagine that someone decides today to invest in Bitcoin, and has 5.000 USD he/she can afford to lose: doing DCA would suppose following the price and deciding the right moment to buy, but not everybody wants to keep an eye on the market, and sometimes it is simply better to make the purchase and forget about it for years. So in these cases, DCA is not the best solution.

In addition, in those jurisdictions where you have to pay taxes on Bitcoin, DCA complicates calculations and can be a little tricky too if you don't document your operations and forget the prices at which you bought.
718  Economy / Gambling / Re: Casinos not asking for KYC to register and play, but do require it to withdraw on: November 13, 2023, 06:06:38 AM
Can you just imagine how many gamblers couldn't withdraw their winnings from casinos because they couldn't pass kyc and how much money those casino have earned due to this!
To be honest, I've played on different casinos which state on their terms that they may ask for identity verification but none of them asked me to do so. I suppose I was lucky but we need to keep in mind that they may freeze our accounts at any moment and ask us to submit our documents.
You may be lucky or probably that the platform never really see the need for them to ask you for verification which is the reason they never do so. Most of the users who gets ask for KYC are those who did something against their policy or has suspicious activity.

You may also imagine how many people gamble online even though it is illegal for them to do so. With the amount of countries restricting online gambling or even gambling as a whole, people from those countries still find a way to do so which is why these gambling platforms have earned significant amount just by following through gambling regulations and policies.

I guess that big, reputable casinos don't need to take this kind of shady actions because their business model works very well with the high amount of users they have. On the contrary, I'm sire that scam casinos exists, websites that are simply a facade with beautiful UIs but with not enough users, that make money this way, using a trap.

Of course, different regulations demand different actions, and sometimes it is legit to ask for KYC after and not before depositing funds (for instance, the guy who deposits little money but wins really big, and his national laws foresee mandatory identification below some threshold). But I don't think this is the case the OP wanted to talk about. So yes, shady casinos exist, and one should always read the T&Cs before depositing, being aware that even if conditions don't say a thing they are in control of his/her coins. So better go for the best known ones which have a minimal history of complaints from users.

720  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Angry at the high fees? That's what everyone predicted the future will be like! on: November 12, 2023, 12:16:01 PM
People should already get used to this, you can’t have your cake and eat it too you know. It’s always common knowledge for bitcoin to also become fee-intensive when its price action becomes desirable, so why always complain about it? Besides, there are layer 2 solutions in place for this like the lightning network, and I don’t see people using that feature for whatever fucking reason yet they are so quick to complain about bitcoin’s high fees when solutions are laid in front of their eyes.

We can’t do anything anymore about the high fees, it’s a flaw in the system that I doubt will get fixed, what we could do instead is make use of what features are available, and perhaps see this high-fee situation as a clear-cut sign that the network is getting busy again. Not something that is inherently negative.

Every time this topic about high fees arises in the Spanish board, it surprises me that my colleagues seem to forget that LN even exists. It is really simple to use, enables instant transactions, and it is almost free. Yes, there are risks linked to that solution, but for everyday expenses it is a really useful tool that most people in my environment didn't even try, those who are knowledgeable in the matter included. Idk what is the problem with this solution's awareness, but there is a real problem with it.

For bigger transactions, it is true that I wouldn't send sats with a value of thousands of dollars through LN. But, if I had to send such big amounts, paying high fees would be the least of my problems.
