Anyone watching the New York Open?

Steve Johnson beat  Sandgren 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(3). We all remember who Sandgren is, the guy that Federer beat from a come from behind win. They went into a tie break, but Johnson mostly controlled it. I guess that Sandgren was still feeling the pain on that Federer lost and probably seeing another ghost during his match against Johnson specially in the tie break.
Sandgren T is currently on his highes rank and his record is not bad at all as he was very good in Australian open but Federer's expereince thrash him this is still hurting him as he lost very badly even leading by 2 - 1 in first 3 sets and fourth set break his all temperment after losing on tie breaker now he can bounce back but take some time.

That is what I'm trying to say, he is really good, however, his defeat against Federer may have put a dent on his spirit and it was like a repeat again against Steve Johnson in this tournament. So it might take some time before he can overcome it mentally.

Jason Jung upset Anderson, the champion in 2018.  He will be facing Norrie, another tough match for him, Norrie beat wild card Brian Shi.
Now after few hours we are going to have some exciting matches Seppi A Vs Johnson S this is going to be Johnson as he is in good touch and Seppi is not good as he was some time ago
In Rotterdam  Evans D Vs Khachanov K its going to be good match but Khachanov is very good and exciting player he can handle Evans very good Medvedev and Rublev both have also easy matches but we can expect some good matches in next round.

i see Khachanov and Medvedev few more rounds in this tournament, but Rublev will face Medvedev as early as third round, so will not make far

I agree, I think that when he was in control against Federer and then losing it has taken a lot out of him mentally. We see this all the time in sports and it can take time before he can recover and sometimes they never recover from this so it will be interesting to see how he goes in future tournaments this year.

Raonic (2) was defeated Kwon. I was rooting for Raonic to win the match because I thought that he made a comeback after winning the second set in a tie break. But Kwon can't be denied, he fought back in the 3rd winning, 6-4.

Tomorrow will be interested as top seed J. Isner will be facing another good player in Johnson.

The first QF has been set up, Humbert (4) vs (6) Kecmanović.

Its looking like its going to be another year like last year in Men's tennis when it comes to these smaller tournaments as the top players don't really seem interested at playing at their best in these tournaments so I'm expecting to see a lot of upsets against the top players and lower ranked players win these tournaments just like we saw last year. That's why I never bet in these tournaments as the top players seem to lose more times then win against low ranked players.

Exactly, specially in the top 5 seed, it looks like they always take a pass on this kind of smaller tournaments and let others play. It's not that they are not interested, maybe they just want others to win this tournaments and taking the needed rest.

It will be Edmund vs Seppi in the finals on Monday. Seppi defeated Jung and then Edwin won against Kecmanović.

It was an easy match for Kyle Edmund as he blasted Seppi, 7-5, 6-1.

He won the eight of the last nine games, so it was really deserving to see Edmund in winning another trophy. It was not an easy road to the finals for Seppi though, it was a baseline match and rallies and Seppi somewhat was pressured and Edmund easily capitalised on it.

Being from Belgium, I have followed her comeback more closely, but I still can't understand why she wants to come back. While she has some talent, it will be very difficult to win tournaments as there are nowadys a lot more young talents. Sometimes, I think she only is coming back for the money, as she has signed already a television deal...
Edit: she lost the match against Muguruza in 2 sets, she is not yet in prime condition  Wink

Yes, she lost, but second set went to tie-break, where she had her chances, but was a bit rusty. Being out of competition for so long, always makes you lack in sharpness in tough situations. But I still think she played pretty well and would have beaten a lot of girls inside Top100 today. Playing Muguruza, who seems to gain some form again, was a bit unlucky.

The top athletes never lose their passion for the sports. Clijsters retired pretty early, so her body is maybe more like someone in her early 30's (leaving the pregnancies aside here). Afaik she was still playing some exhibiitions and/or charity matches in the last years, so you can see that she never hung her racket up. Those girls often want to have children as well, so it's not easy to time everything properly for them. They have enough money for the rest of their life and they don't want to be old mothers. So you often see WTA players around 30 getting pregnant (Vesnina, Minella, Shvedova come to my mind) and halting their career or even call it a career.

Life on tour isn't easy. Those that hate it, just accept it as part of the game. Those that don't bother with being on the road for 40 weeks a year and living in hotels all the time, being jet-lagged frequently, are more likely to come back after pregnancy. Dementieva for example retired the same age as Clijsters, since she wanted to have kids. She never liked the tour life and thus never came back, just enjoying family life. Clijsters seems ok with going through all the hassle again and I don't think she does it for the money. I guess she has enough money and if not, she could always work as TV commentator or something like that.

We are seeing players playing well into their late 30's early 40's now days so this doesn't surprise me however being out of the game for so long might see her struggle to perform at her best. It may take a few months before we see her compete at her best. She can make the top 100 as she has the talent to do so however not sure if it will be this year, maybe next year if she continues on.

After 8 years still its not bad comeback as she fight hard for second set and lost on tie breaker I watch at the end feel she can do some good in coming years if she is going to stay here again for 2 or 3 years because its never been easy for any player specially woman to comeback and fight like this lets watch how she react in next matches in coming days now Muguruza is also very expereinced and done good job against former no 1.

No doubt that Kyle could win this match in my book. I never look at the odds though and most probably he is the favourite here.

I agree that Seppi had to go thru a lot reaching the finals. And we see lots of players their body taking a toll and when they are on the finals, their energy is gone.

Wow, I still remember those days, with the women version of the big 3 or big 5. Her, Henin, Williams sisters, Hingis. So it's good to see her back, but I think she still needs more time though. Of course those elite players still have it, they just need to find the groove again.

Maybe we need to understand why she is on a comeback, any speculations as to why?

Until now no speculation why she came back but its very good as now she is 36 and still playing very good she can reach in some rank as Muguruza take some tough time to beat her even now she is very highly ranked player its could be very good to watch her in next few matches as she can do any surprise or no.

Maybe we need to understand why she is on a comeback, any speculations as to why?

This is what she says:

Quote
“While there is a lot of work ahead of me in the next four months, my biggest motivation is the personal challenge involved – both physically and mentally, I want to test myself again.”

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/sep/12/kim-clijsters-comes-out-of-tennis-retirement-for-a-second-time

So she is very competitive and wanted to prove that she can do it at her age. This is not her first time to make a comeback, she did in 2012 and won so she have wait it takes and begin another quest for tennis glory.

How long will she last? it would be very interesting if he could compete with Serena at the French Open.

Well this is her first match in eight years, and Muguruza is a runner-up in this years AO so it's a difficult match for Clijsters in her comeback trail.

Five double faults, but she level the game 4-4 in the second set and then saved two break points to push the second set to a tie-break. But it was not enough as Muguruza won 8-6.

Its always going to be hard for anyone coming back after a long time out of the game and to come up against like you said the runner-up of the AO makes its even more difficult. Like I mention she does have the talent and can break into the top 100 but its going to take time as in the Women's draw there is a lot of great players and all very competitive so for me I can't see her winning any grand slams but she can win a small tournament or two.

I can promote your project on X to my 100k+ followers for a reasonable price. Just DM me for prices.

Muguruza is 26 years old and Clijsters is 36 and when she left tennis 8 years back Muguruza enters in and reached no 1 rank now 16 which is still not bad and Clijsters is playing first match after 8 years big difference but as she played in second set we can expect some good from her as she can give shock to any top ranked player.

She used to be an elite athlete, you can see it in the second set. She still has that mentality but coming back after 8 long years and facing a young player who just came short of the championship in Australia, it will be really difficult for Kim Clijsters. She needs more time and she needs to win at least to get her confidence back.
