I would imagine she would indeed be granted a wild card to any tournament at this stage
but I think that window of opportunity will only last so long. She will need to get fit again
and get competitive to climb the rankings to where her level should be, for certain top 20.

Yea she has had some fairly what I imagine are painful and annoying surgeries on wrists
and ankles but isnt the first so with the right team she should be recovered now and building.

Yeah, I hope she will find a good coach eventually.

Some news on Nick Kyrgios. Unfortunately the Aussie is to miss the AO this year. He said he feels exhausted, in pain and would like to finish his career:

"I'm tired. I have had three surgeries now. I'm only 28 years old, I always wanted to have a family and not be in pain. When I get up, I can't walk without pain. It's a tough gig," he said.

He also shared that he actually considered a suicide back in 2019. Such a pity this guy is so talented he could easily be TOP10 ATP.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/67700860

Oh definitely he had the potential to be a top 10 player and possibly even a grand slam winner.

As we talked here before about Nick that he has been too volatile and his emotions were
not under control, he was entertaining both talent wise and court personality wise.

Injuries are a massive drawback in an individual sport, we have seen it recently with Rafa,
Raducanu and Nick. These top athletes play on the edge of being at the top of their abilities
and having an injury.

Rafa at least had a spectacular career despite his injuries. Mostly thanks to his indestructible will, drive and passion.

Speaking about injuries, Bianca Andreescu has already announced she is missing AO this year. She is still being troubled by injuries (ankles?). Another player to possibly skip AO is Milos Raonic. The Canadian has already cancelled his participation in all tournaments before AO (Australia & NZ).

Yeah, Kyrgios is a weird one. I won't miss him, was never a fan of his theatrics.

A really good player when everything is going his way, but definitely not super talented like the media wanted us to believe.
In this lousy period of tennis, I think he never actually breached into top 10 overall.

It's his behavior that brought him most of his fame, his tennis was below par most of the time.

Ah Milos, thats sad to hear, he only made his comeback this year 2023. I liked Milos, he
was a cool customer and did very well around 2016/2017 and was a top 10 player back then.

Cant believe he is actually 32 so yea his playing days are numbered if he hasnt decided to
retire altogether.

He was touted as having a lot of potential but yea you are right, maybe he actually
didnt and masked that with his behavior on court, it was like he was creating a distraction
particularly when things were unraveling for him - very annoying to watch from
memory actually

He has the talent, however, is out of the court behavior and theatrics really did a lot of damage on his career. If he has only the mentally of the great players he could really be in the top 5 during his prime years.

But he wasted it, and we all know that even if you have the talent, if you don't know how to bring the best of you and motivate yourself to be the best version of you, talent is not enough. And Nick is the classic example, and see he is should still be in the prime years at 28, but it seems that he will no longer play in the tournament as his body and mind is already giving up.

You are right, its not just about talent, although it is probably the most important aspect
of a tennis players career.

Fitness is obviously up there with talent. To have optimum fitness it is necessary to have the
correct diet and routine.

Mentality - I would say that this is sometimes under estimated but is unbelievably important
and is a skill in itself.

All three are in balance with each other and without one an optimal performance wont be
achieved on a regular basis

He is probably when of the biggest talents of the last years and if he can keep his focus and is in a good state of mind, he can do great things (remember Wimbledon of last year). I think working with a mental health coach could do wonders for him, but the question is if he will ever take that step.

At this stage in his career he isnt going to take that step of hiring a mental coach, look at what serveria
posted earlier, he is in pain, tired and feels like ending his career.

While he is going to miss the AO in 2024, We might see him later in the year but wouldnt be surprised
by anything TBH.

We will have plenty to talk about come the new season kicking off we wont have time to talk about Nick!
We have all these young players in the top 10, Djokovic still in great form, Rafa making a comeback.

Actually is was shown pretty detailed in Netflix documentary "Break Point" how Kyrgios feels and why he can't perform better. He needs a very special approach with a limited number of training sessions (something like 3-4 times weekly). If he goes above this limit, he starts to feel depressed and can't enjoy tennis anymore. The same with tournaments - if he plays too frequently his quality of play falls drastically. So it's not that easy.

I would say he is probably the only player who feels that way or has that approach.

Over say the last 2 years for example I would have the impression that he doesnt overall
enjoy his tennis. I'm basing this purely on his on court antics and general "bad behaviour",
or is it that he gets a kick out of acting like that and "going against the grain" to make a point
that tennis doesnt have to be so serious all the time or something like that?

I think he's a great actor and loves putting on a show. Despite this, 2022 was the best year in his career until now. He managed to reach Wimbledon final, won a title in Washington and, if I'm not mistaken, they also won AO doubles with Kokkinakis.

Anyways, if anyone here following World Tennis League, yesterday was a pleasure to watch this doubles match between a Russian duo Mirra Andreeva/Andrei Rublev vs the Polish pair Swiatek/Hurkacz. Swiatek/Hurkacz of team Hawks defeated Andreeva/Rublev of team Eagles : 6-2

So many big names playing there, nice way to watch quality tennis while anticipating AO!

Interesting, will watch that documentary. Everybody is different and needs a different approach but there are more sporters like him that mentally struggle. Look at Ronnie O'Sullivan, he is the greatest snooker player of all time, but also struggled a lot during his career. He hired a mental coach and is right now still winning big tournaments even though he is 48 years old.

Been following a dramatic final of the World Tennis League today. Team Eagles defeated team Kites after Sofia Kenin surprisingly beat Aryna Sabalenka 6:4. Kenin showed probably her best tennis this year. The drama for Kites didn't end there - Paula Badosa and Sabalenka lost their doubles match against Mirra Andreeva/Kenin duo after leading 5:2 and Andreeva's second serve had been called out. Eagles challenged the call and it turned out the serve was in. Eagle girls proceeded by winning 5 games in a row and winning the match 7:5. In the final match of the day Rublev lost against Grigor Dimitrov but the writing was on the wall - team Eagles (Medvedev, Rublev, Kenin, Andreeva) won the title!  Cool

Merry Christmas to you too serveria.com!

Yea I did see that this tournament was on, its more of an exhibition event though, its an
independent tournament and probably a bit more light hearted than a full blown ATP/WTA
event. They are certainly not doing it for the monetary reward either...

The Eagles took home AED1 million ($272,305), while the Kites bagged AED500,000.

Sure, for such stars like Medvedev and Rublev a prize of $272,305/4 is peanuts but for Andreeva for example it's a great chance to take on the biggest WTA/ATP stars and a very nice experience. So, she's definitely a winner here.

Everyone is probably looking forward to the comeback of the year 2024 when Rafael Nadal steps onto the Australien Open court. I was trying to find out which tournament he will play in preparation of the Australian Open. Does anyone know what his first games will be? I think people around the world will watch those games with a little bit of skepticism, hoping that he doesn't have to give up or something. That fear that he has to step back during the tournament even when he wins his games until the quarterfinals or something is also there. But it would be great to see a fully healthy Nadal in 2024 and have him compete with Djokovic like in good old times.

I think his first tournament will be the ATP tournament in Brisbane end December- beginning January. It will be good to have him back on the tenniscourts, but I don't think he will get back to his old level. He is already 37 years and we saw the same with Federer when he tried to come back from his injury. Would be great if he could win another grandslam but will be very difficult.

I didn't check the draw and/or order of play but I've heard that Nadal is going to play on December 31st! I wasn't able to find the draw online so it's not clear yet whom he is going to play in R1 but it's clear that it won't be Matteo Berrettini. The Italian has withdrawn from Brisbane International due to foot injury.

I have only found reports from the month of October. There it is reported that Rafael Nadal will not play at the United Cup in Australia. But I have not found anything more recent.
In any case, the tennis world is looking forward to see him playing again. And everyone hopes that he can play for a long time.

Ok yes, you are right, here it is: "Nadal Announces He Will Return In Brisbane"

I am sure he has done everything possible to be fit enough to endure an entire tournament. Because this is what I am most afraid of, he wins his games but has to quit because of again another injury.

Djokovic is now smelling the opportunity as there is only Alcaraz who can stop him from time to time, but other than that there is hardly anyone with a realistic chance to beat Djokovic. If he stays in shape, who knows how many Grand Slam titles he can still add.
