Bitcoin is better than western union, its faster, more secure, you don't need to fill lot of documentation id. Western Union also has a very high fee. If you use it to pay a product that you bought in another country it can be that the fee is higher than the product price.
The only problem that bitcoin has against western union or other companies its that people that use it normaly don't use bitcoins in his daily basics or haven't a bitcoin atm near to cash it.

The only plus of Wester Union is that you got your money in a standard you can spend right away, for anything without need of conversion or using exchanges. You can't buy everything directly for bitcoin yet.

The rates quoted at OP are for US, which is lower than most other countries
I've used WU before during business trips to some countries in Africa and Middle East, the rates were quite outrageous  Angry and some of those countries were amongst the poorest ones

Until Bitcoin can be redeemed at countless thousands of street corners around the globe, it most definitely isn't better than WU. It is in concept, and even more so if there wasn't any need to convert it, but it remains a theoretical advantage for now.

Agreed, for many developed countries there are things like Local Bitcoins, ATMs, btc debit cards and so on.
for the developing ones this is still lacking but I've noticed an ever increasing interest by local businessmen who are starting to see the advantages of bitcoin, hopefully that will translate into more practical usage of btc in those places soon

Bitcoin may become better than Western Union for money transfer.
There are reasons why Western Union is still around. We will have to see how Western Union adapts to the changed environment once Bitcoin usage becomes more widespread.

There are reasons why Western Union is still around. We will have to see how Western Union adapts to the changed environment once Bitcoin usage becomes more widespread.

Western Union can either choose to assimilate Bitcoin or fight it if it begins cutting into the remittance business too heavily. If you could use Western Union like a Bitcoin ATM both Western Union and Bitcoin could be mutually beneficial. That would be difficult in places like New York, but half the exchanges simply refuse to do business with New York residents, and Western Union could do the same.

you should not ignore the difficulties to exchange bitcoin back to fiat in most of the countries in the current world (even in the western countries), and the bigger is the amount and the bigger are the problems

I think it's quite irrational to compare between western union and bitcoin, bitcoin better in most aspect than western union such as transaction time, fees, transaction limit & other else.
Western union still win in few aspect because they send fiat which can be used anywhere.

When bitcoin is commonly used by many people, western union & it's friends will dead

Yes. Bitcoin is much better and more convenient by all means when we comparing it to Western Union. Bitcoin is border-less. You can send and receive everywhere in the world with very less transaction fees. Bitcoin will replace Western Union kind of physical money transfer services as well Paypal kind of internet services too.

Guys don't even get me started on Western Union. I mean banks are something, but these guys are worse than banks, governments and drug dealers together with their insane fees.
Yes. This is what I somewhat also think. WU is very evil, especially when it comes to fees. It doesn't even make sense to use it unless you're really out of options. Luckily with Bitcoin and the start of the cryptocurrency revolution the industry is shifting. WU either needs to adapt or stay behind. High fees should be a think of the past.

why you should exchange bitcoin to fiat, bitcoin was not meant for that as a final target, it was meant to be used directly, which will help the buyers sustaining the market, because no more dumping will put a pressure on them

It is ridiculous Western Union still exist, they were most expencive 15 years ago and they are still now. Why people don't open eyes and use other ways to send money worldwide? They really dont care, for huge fees?

Convenience. It may cost like a mofo but there really aren't too many other options in certain scenarios.

Western union is definitely much worst than Bitcoin with the fees but in terms of acceptance rate, WU still wins. WU allows the transfer of fiat directly which doesn't require the user to exchange it to fiat before using it. As of now, the adoption rate is still very low for Bitcoin. It can be solved by using a company to send but it would require trust on that company.

Bitcoin has a lot of advantages compared to any other processors. Be it Western union and any other else. Bitcoin fee is cheap, it's fast and hasle free. I will not be surprised if there will be another thread saying bitcoin is better than any. LOL. Cheesy

Nowadays people need paper money to buy basic things, if there is no atm to redem it, could be a new oportunity for westernunion or another company to offer bitcoins to cash conversion. They will earn an high fee for the conversion but it has to be lower than using its money transfer services.

come on guys, be realistic!

myself i've been stuck with no cash and lots of btc in a big european city considered "bitcoin-friendly" and i was unable to do shit! (except some coffee and some bad sandwitch).

if i want to send BTC to my family in Vietnam, what are they going to do with it? of course they need to exchange it to local fiat (and that's super hard) because they don't give a shit of the-purpose-of-bitcoin, they just want to buy food and stuff like that

Western Union at best is a major ripoff.

Used them a couple of times as there was no other way to send funds quickly but since getting involved with bitcoin I've never been back to WU and doubt I ever will.

I've had the same experience with Western Union, used it couple of times too. Unfortunately I can't say I will not use it anymore because if you go to a place where there is no localbitcoins you are bound to use the service of Western Union in some cases.

you don't have a bank account in vietnam? paypal? you can sell bitcoin for paypal with coinamal pretty, easy just open an account, there is no need of id or something like that

or use circle, i don't fin it hard at all to exchange it for fiat, if you're really forced to do so
