Western they get their profits from the exchange and the high fees taken on each exchange. They need to readjust their fees to avoid bankrupt, and well when people know and trust that they can send money to family ,making their money worth much more will be one hard way to wester recover the hit they got now and will keep loosing costumers slowly.

Firstly, this will not happen in the near future. But even it will happen Bitcoin still will be a better option regarding fees.

If you want to transfer $200 with WESTERN UNION the minimal fee (3 business days) would be $8.00

At present, the price of bitcoin is too volatile. For example, if you want to transfer $500, you buy the bitcoin at $500, and get 1 bitcoin. You then send 1 bitcoin to your family. When they want to cash in, the price has changed to $350. You lost $150 in the process. So application of bitcoin in remittance will only work when the price of bitcoin is more stable.

If my family in the other country knows how Bitcoin work.

Than it is easy to do and cheaper. But they don't so I do other but not wester union and it cost alot of money to send it :/.

Welcome to Bitcoin community!! Now you have a mission - teach your family and spread the word. It is our target. I'm doing this everywhere, where i can. The best is to start with family.. Year ago they was laughing because even when they seen some informations about BTC it was missing them.. Now i see that they asking me about more details.. When your family see that can save money with that, maybe will start using BTC. It is how to begin way to mainstream.. Wink

While we debate about Bitcoin versus Western Union, MoneyGram who is Western Union competitor said bitcoin will fail a week ago Roll Eyes
What do you think about it? I think they afraid bitcoin'll destroy their business

http://www.coindesk.com/moneygram-bitcoin-fail-disrupt-remittances/

Ofcourse it is just trolling. They are afraid! Not only they.. all banksters are afraid. It will be the end of business like this.. Ofcourse they can exist but like little bar with hamburgers and chips against McDonalds Wink

you just reduce your fee to 1k satoshi or lower, even right now i'm fine with 1k, transaction are confirmed as a planned, there is no need to do a 10k

Did you noticed that the fee is raising year by year?Countries are taking a bigger fee every year, soo why wouldnt happen with bitcoin it must keep alive and with network protect it otherwise would die very fast.Wester union has their costumers and some of them are using bitcoin now and saving those 3% in small ammounts would mean almost nothing now consider something like 10k usd 300 dollars is something to spend at anything for sure.

Exactly more and more get into bitcoins it would hit the mainstream for sure, and ofcourse bitcoins is best as compared to western union as western union charges heavily for their transactions where is sending via bitcoins is very cheap and time saving, So I bet bitcoiner's would never get into the door steps of western union for sending money for sure  Wink

For that we need to have a lot Bitcoin ATM's in a lot stores around the world. That makes it easy for people to cash out their Bitcoins and receive fiat in return. That's how you make Western Union useless.

If the fees are high in these atms then i don't find those useful, better maybe is buying a bitcoin debit card and use it everywhere with the same fees.

Because when you have to deal with fiat everything goes to shit. The way to go is to deal with Bitcoins only, or alt to alt transactions if anything. That's how you benefit from Bitcoin. Bitcoin will always diminish in quality of experience when you have to convert them to fiat.

This will take some time but eventually when bitcoin gets adopted globally you wouldn't need stores like that because you wouldn't need to convert your bitcoins to fiat to use them, there would be stores locally who would accept bitcoins and when that happens you'd start to use BTC as fiat and save even more on conversion fees which is what you pay when you convert BTC to fiat or vice versa.

All true, but needs some info about what's happening right now.

Sending:
If you already have bitcoin, you can use remittance sites to send bitcoin on the net almost free.
If you don't have bitcoin, you can get them by bank transfer to exchange sites, or (easier) get them from localbitcoins or mycelium traders (probably at a 5% premium over the exchange rate). These traders are all over the philippines, for example.

Receiving:
In many countries, sites like rebit.ph and coins.ph allow the sender to deposit directly for you (or you can use them by yourself to convert bitcoin to fiat for you to collect). Fiat is then obtained at the usual cash outlets (the ones that western union mostly uses in fact - not western union stores btw) at something like a 5% fee. Some of these sites even send the fiat to your door by courier (dunno what the fee is for that).

Many of these sites allow you to use bitcoin to top up your phone, pay bills etc, so there's really no need to cash your bitcoin except in emergencies.

In none of those cases does bitcoin need a brick and mortar presence.

If we compare bitcoin atm with western union then i think they are in the same level about the anonymity, both of them have your pic in their security cameras. But in generally bitcoin is better than WU
