the only reason why any of the altcoins exist is that bitcoin is open source with a free to use (MIT) license and also the fact that price of bitcoin went from nothing to $1200 from that day everybody is thinking about making a new coin with nothing to offer and make money from the pump and dump of it. but they forget that things never work this way.

Yeah your right this is one of the good thing why we are also have altcoins they are making a clone of bitcoin that has more features than bitcoin.. if bitcoin will be die soon we can use other altocoin for any transaction if bitcoin will die. but if it will happen i am sure that many companies will regret why they are holding bitcoin instead of other currency here online.
In this case i think its impossible that bitcoin will be die in the future. unless if internet is gone..

well, yeah. if you are going to think that way you should also think that we don't know how long anything is going to last for! the world as we know it may fall apart because of apocalypse or the financial world can collapse because of the financial crisis that everybody is speculating about and fiat likes us dollar can become worthless.

so it all comes down to the chance of any of these happening. there is a lot of potential in bitcoin so we can know to some extent how long it can last for.

The ones who think any alt can replace bitcoin would surely be a fool, it all depends on demand, look at the users database of bitcoin and then have a look at other cryptos, combine all other alts users databases and they still will be nothing in compared to bitcoin, and all other coins are being used just because of bitcoin.

Yes, especially altcoin devs, there are many scammers dec there, after dumping the premined coins or get ico funds, abandon altcoin projects, make investors poor.

That is the latest scam that have been happening a lot lately. One did it and the other will be following it. This will never stop as long as they know there is a lot of money that can be profited from it. Just look how many alt coins are there now. Tthat also makes other good alts be bad at the view of some people.

Yes....plus the altcoin world creates a lot of buzz that attracts more people to the community.  Once they're hooked, they're gonna need bitcoin to get started.  When TV programs about cryptocurrencies (like the mini-series "Start Up" on Crackle) get people curious, more people adopt bitcoin to see what all the excitement is about.

Correct, altcoin do make important role  on  increasing  bitcoins adoption since those altcoin is  dependent to bitcoin for  able to be trade which people would  definitely pass first to bitcoin  after they purchase the said altcoin then it would  be a good  publicity to bitcoin.

The altcoins are the only way for anyone of us became rich, as some people went in the past at bitcoin, sure there are amazing coins with several new things around them, but in the end you dont trade altcoins without the wish to grow your bitcoin portfolio.

Altcoins (maybe with the exception of Litecoin) have done nothing for BTC apart from ridicule it. The same rinse and repeat is just absurd and offensive.

We could do with a completely different design of coin, trying to slightly improve Bitcoin is of no use, revolutionise or stay away.

Bitcoin would easily persist and remain even if altcoins are no longer used, but the opposite is difficult IMO, Altcoins are so dependent on bitcoin in even there pricing that they need it, BTC would easily maintain itself without altcoins though.

Altcoins are just copy/clones of bitcoin and don't offer much expect ETH, XMR etc so even without altcoins existance, price of bitcoin may not be effected much.

Thank you for the good explanation. Yes indeed it is good for bitcoin economy to have a competitive altcoin but still it is getting hard to trust some alts because a lot of disaster is happening with them. I wont say bitcoin is perfect but to reach the point to where it is now will be a long time for them to catch up.
